an imminent threat to life. a warning from cal fire as homes are destroyed and thousands are evacuated. wildfires continue to rage all across the bay area. for some, a truly terrifying experience as they desperately race to escape those flames. good afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> we have more than a dozen fires raging in every bay area county except san francisco. cal fire has grouped them by region. to the north you have the lnu lightning complex fire. in the east bay, is scu lightning complex fire and the czu august fire. gafr newsom says the crews have left crews stretched and strained to the limit. the governor says we have seen more fires this year than in all of last year. now, cal fire said there are more than 60 fires that started during lightning strikes this being. you can see where just some of those fires are across the

state. we have team coverage across the bay area. fires are flaring and evacuations are underway as we speak. one of the most destructionive fireses is in sonoma county. 50 structures there have been damaged so far. abc7 news reporter laura anthony live in vacaville with more on the situation. laura? >> reporter: well, hi. i can tell you from what we've seen, that number will go much higher. this house behind me in the english hills area, a very recent casualty. this home started burning right about 2:00. a beautiful two-story home on top of a hill. we can see it go up. the roof was on fire. and within less than two hours, really, this is all that's left of it. this is a harrowing night for the folks who live in this neighborhood. we're in northwest vacaville. i'm told by the neighbors around 3:30 in the morning, they

started to get the calls via loud speaker. the warning that there was an imminent threat to their lives. >> we had a go list dug up last night, fortunately. we grabbed everything and hit the cars. >> and we met man at one of the road blocks. he was very concerned with his house. you heard him say he was only able to get out, and he his wife, with a moment's notice. he was concerned about the fire coming over the hills to solano county. as you heard him say, unfortunately, he was only given a few minutes to leave. they knew they were in trouble when they saw the original glow come over the hills. he told us that he thought he was in pretty good shape because he was able to run his sprinklers. they had their sprinklers on throughout the evening just in case the fire came over here. and he said everything was going, what he thought was

pretty well, until the power went off and the power went off, many are on a well system. so once the power went off, they didn't have any way to pump water to their homes. so this home behind me, at least one of what we believe to be dozens of homes that have burned here. laura nth a. >> before you go, how smoky is it there? is it to the point where it really bothers you when you breathe? i see you don't have a mask on. >> reporter: i've got it. it is very smoky, larry. you have to figure out what side of the wind you're on, the smoke is blowing. it is quite thick. a lot of particles in the air and i know this morning in the bay area, a lot of particles. as you can imagine, a lot more up here.smoky, we have not seen any air attack on this fire, at least in this area. it is just too smoky for them to

see what they're doing or they have to get too low to see what they're doing. we did see one helicopter earlier this afternoon. that one looked like one of those surveying the area. >> all right, thank you. please stay safe up there. cal fire has been evacuating for the hennessey fire throughout the day. we want to show you the areas affected by that fire. we are showing in red where the mandatory evacuation orders are in effect. i'm told we don't have a ma'am at the moment. le areas of napa and sonoma counties including parts of 128 along with highway 116. all areas south of the russian river and partouy west of healedsburg. >> the napa county sheriff's office is reminding everyone why evacuating is so critical. they shared this dramatic video on twitter. sergeant thompson captured the scene yesterday. you can see flames blocking off the road and engulfing the

hillside. the sheriff's office included a quick three-word reminder. stop, think, evacuate. with several wildfires burning out of control today in sonoma, crews have a lot to tackle. the fires are burning in the western part of the county near the russian river. cornell is live in guerneville with the very latest. >> reporter: the winds are really picking up here in downtown guerneville. i have to tell you, all eyes are on the mountain right behind me. check it out. it is full of smoke and flames. this fire now known as the wall bridge fire has burned 1,500 acres. it is 0% contained at this hour. the county says about 13,000 people living in this area have been told to evacuate. many say they are not leaving yet. >> well, our plan is we have the car packed. our little bag is packed and everything. >> reporter: karina was told to leave her home tuesday night as the wall bridge fire slowly

moved toward guerneville. many people did leave. much ofas an empty ghost town. but she's staying put until she gets word from the fire chief himself. >> so it's like, he told me, if you see fire, then i guess we'll go. but that's what a lot of people are doing who live here. >> reporter: that fire was clearly visible only miles from guerneville. this ridge exploding in flames as the fire marched on. the fire was creeping to sweet water springs road. we found this cal foyer crew making a stand, pushing back the flames. so much dry brush burning within seconds. these firefighters were going door to door doing checks, making sure people evacuated. firefighters clearly stretched to the limit. >> we need the weather to cum. the high temperatures and the winds. >> we're here at the fair grounds. >> evacuees came to the fair

grounds in santa rosa by 10:00 a.m., there were a dozen horses and the two goats and lots of chickens. >> we got all the animals loaded up. we stayed in the truck with the animals overnight and bringing them in here. to be stalled and cared for. >> lots of people are helping out lots of folks with animals, et cetera, tonight. we're back tonight. cal fire says this fire is expected to grow consider when i. there's another fire burning west here. i think 1,500 acres. 0% contained. several evacuation points have been established in bodega bay at west side park and healdsburg at memorial beach. we are told covid protocols are in place at all those locations. live where the situation continues to change here. we will keep you posted.

abc7 news. >> thank you. check this out. this is called a thermal map from nasa and the national weather service showing the major run the hennessey fire made from napa county toward winters and vacaville. the brown area represents the last 12 hours alone. this thing has just exploded in size. as we get to spencer christian roms really at conditions i starting to blow. >> it is. it has been breezy all day. it looks like the gusts are increasing a bit which is not good news. let's look at current conditions smear some of these fires. we'll start near north bay where it is 99 degrees, the relative humidity only 14%. the wind gusting to 17 miles per hour. over near the hennessey st. helena, 96 degrees. the humidity is in the teens, dangerously low. now let's go to the fire near la

honda. it is 95 degrees. the relative humidity only 16%. wind gusts at 10 miles an hour. and of course these gusts are variable. they go get higher or lower. and there is a chance that we can get higher. as you see across the entire region, we have a breezy pattern. wind gusts to 21 miles an hour. surface wind feeds, 15 to 20 miles an hour and we have high fire danger. the red flag warning in effect for solano fire until 9:00 tomorrow tomorrow morning and lake county, until 9:00 tomorrow morning. we're till in high fire danger situation. i'll have the full forecast a little later. >> thank you. cal fire is grouping together at least 20 fires burk across five counties. the scu fires include alameda, santa clara, alameda, contra costa and san joaquin.

they said the steep terrain is certainly adding to the challenges for the crews. containment, only 5%. one of those fires is burning out of control northeast of mt. diablo. sky 7 video shows smoke climbing over the hillside. evacuation orders stretch from contra costa into alameda county. this is in the deer fire let's go to santa cruz county where hundreds of left their homes. dramatally ovnit.gwn let's check in with chris reyes. >> reporter: good afternoon. they're setting least five majo fires are burning in san mateo and santa cruz county. we know three firefighters have been injured. we don't have an update.

22,000 residents have been evacuated since last night. we spoke to a few of them. this is the scene all over santa cruz county. at least ten active fires growing by the hour. some spreading into san mateo county. the fire has burned through 10,000 acres across the two counties sparked by the weekend's line storms. >> we saw the winds kick up. that was a game changer. that's when all of a sudden we had to start evacuating lots of people in a quick amount of time. >> reporter: that's what this group of neighbors had to do late tuesday night. this, the night sky. >> i am pretty much homeless. i slept in the car because i couldn't find a hotel room. >> how long are you prerm to be away? >> as long as necessary. we have everything we need. luckily we have an rv. >> i'm concern about the house. we grabbed everything we could. >> we found empty holes.

we're looking at live pictures from sky 7. as the chopper approaches the san francisco area and just look at the air quality. sales force tower is in the background as we zoom on out. i mean, people are having a hard time breathing today and you can literally see why. we'll have more with spencer later on the air quality conditions. thousands of people are under evacuation orders as hundreds of wildfires blaze across the state. there are hundreds of fires, too many to count including 23 major fires, or groups of fires right now. melanie joins with us reaction from governor newsom today. >> the governor emphasized how

system asks you to conserve now to relieve stress on the grid and keep power flowing. we want to take another looncer at the hot conditions and the dry conditions. >> it's pretty ugly out there. you just see the smoke getting thicker and thicker. i can taste the smoke. i think it is filtering into the building. it is still quite warm out there with the haze and the declining air quality. not a pleasant afternoon. wind speed at the surface, basically final 20 miles an hour over most of the bay area with occasional gusts to 20 miles an hour. on we go to a look at the ugly haze collecting over san francisco, looking down from sutro tower. 69 degrees in the city. 93 at redwood city.

gilroy, 98 degrees and 64 at half moon bay. another view of the smoke collecting in the atmosphere, looking at san francisco from mt. tam. the temperature readings, 96 at santa rosa. napa, 95, 103 at fairfield and couple cord. here's the view from our south beach camera. smoky hazy skies and poor air quality will be with us for the next several days. it will be warming up and we have an excessive heat warning for virtually all bay area except communities along the bay shoreline. that's in if he can until 9:00 tonight. a high risk of heat-related illness. the air quality will be terrible. another spare the air day. and unhealthy air will be the

case thughout t bay area fires. we have spare the air alerts through sunday. the forecast animation overnight shows a little marine layer developing. erght hours. down during the much more pleasant sleeping weather than we've had. overnight low temperatures will be in the mid to upper 50s on the coast and right around the bay shoreline. upper 50s to low 60s. we had upper 60s the last few nights and mid 60s inland. the highs will range from low to mid 60s at the coast to mainly mid to upper 70s right along the bay shoreline. a couple of low 80. and inland areas in the triple dig it is the days will reach only to the low to mid 90s tomorrow. as we look at the accuweather forecast, you see the little break isn't going on last very long. once again, a spare the air alert for the next several days, right through the weekend. the inland highs will bounce

from sky 7. this is a huge plume, a fire burning in marin county. as we mentioned earlier. so many fires. almost too many to count. this fire season according to officials is already worse than the total of all the fires we had last year. and we still have a ways to go. one positive note. we're getting word that no power outages will take place tonight. so at least there's that.mell te smoke from all over the bay area. the wildfires are creating an unhealthy breathing environment for bay area residents. this comes amidst already

heightened concerns because of covid-19. chris has more on how some are handling the smoke. >> reporter: just when you thought things couldn't get worse during the coronavirus crisis, residents throughout the bay are dealing with unhealthy air quality because of the wildfires. >> what sins did i commit to be hell, man in it's burning. >> reporter: edwin has been struggling with the showing flag he has plenty of experience working outdoors but isn't sure he can make it through workday even with a respirator. >> it is unbelievable. i've never encountered this before. with the humidity and the heat and now this. with everything else going on. >> reporter: officials with the bay area air quality management district have issued a spare the air alert through sundays with the recommendation for residents to keep their windows and doors closed at all times until smoke levels decide. that smoke is stuck between mountain ranges across the region. >> hopefully, if we can get the

winds to come in and shift, it can blow that smoke out. right now, it is being trapped at the surface. >> reporter: any relief will depend on the weather in the coming days. concerns continue to grow, espcially for vulnerable population who's may not have access to air conditioning. >> what we do know, even within an hour of someone being exposed to wildfire smoke, there are increases in respiratory cardiac disorders. >> reporter: the doctor, director of air pollution and health atntl research, says studies have shown there tends to be higher rates of covid-19 in areas with elevated air pollution. health experts now urging the public to take their advice seriously. >> restrict activity, check what the levels are before you would even consider going outside, as much as you can to avoid the

let's to go drew tuma. what do you think? >> reporter: typically behind me you would be able to see the east bay. not the case today. a bit of a breeze has picked up but there are still issues. you can see where the red dots are, it is unhealthy. the air quality, the smoke is thick in the south bay right now for good reason. fires are raging. to the north bay we go. we have moderate air quality. you look at the satellitea lot california. but today in march, one fire in sonoma county, the wall bridge fire. that was the single fire that was the cause of. so smoke for the core of the bay area. take a look at the mountains and monterey bay. it is very thick with smoke. te winds have picked up a bit

scenes of destruction across the bay area as firefighters do their best to keep wildfires from spreading. now to the northern end of napa county where manner to evacuation orders are in effect. it includes areas of pope valley where abc7 news reporter is right now. >> reporter: earlier today you could see clouds of smoke on the hill side. now you can see small plumes. it is mostly widespread haze. we spoke to people forced to evacuate. they said the same thing. it is tough to lose a house during a pandemic and they're hoag their homes will have safe.

sheriffs deputies helping. carlos and his family have lived here since 1984. they were evacuated two years ago but emthis time it's different. >> we've never had no lightning storms. monday, the lightning storm came down and it was all over the valley. >> reporter: he thought they may have been safe until this. >> last night it took off during thetht. nobody even knew about it. >> the fire is everywhere. >> reporter: they were evacuated on monday. they live near lake hennessey. he came back today trying to find out if his house is still standing. >> it's crazy. just worried about our house that we've lived in the last three years. it's everything we've got. >> reporter: vasquez has similar concerns. >> it's our home. this is where we live.

if this goes up, what's next? we can't live anywhere else. we're out here in the country. it's affordable still. >> reporter: he works as a maintenance engineer at a vineyard. he said this is middle of the harvest season. if the grapes are destroyed, this is his only source of income. >> there is a vineyard tim street andnow. if those grapes go bad, it will cost something. >> reporter: there are some evacuations set up. i was told that the napa county regional parks and open space district is also helping people with accommodations. abc7 news. last night a wildfire damage ad house that is a staple of the vacaville community. they represent the american dream. we saluted him in may after his nonprofit donated millions of ppe to front line workers.

the family's ranch is not only their home. they escaped the fire in the middle of the night. >> we are just praying hopefully it will not come so fast. it would give us enough time. we are told, too late, too late. it is catching fire. it's too late. it's unreal. unreal. i was literally in tears and everything happened so fast. >> they are not sure yet of the extent of the fire damage. the main house may stand. they don't know yet. some buildings have definitely burned. they say the area was wiped out by the fire. >> so sad. eric thomas joins us now from yolo county with a family braved the road closures to get to their trapped horses. >> reporter: exactly. if you had been here this morning, you would have seen a

stream of cars leaving koibl. this afternoon what we're seeing is vehicles trying to get back into the area. they're trying to get to animals that were -- >> reporter: it's been really busy at the berryessa sporting goods stop where they've been stopping for supplies. >> i've been here about three hours so far. i think we've had over 200 people stop in already. >> reporter: among them -- >> we're trying to get in and save the animals. >> reporter: towing a horse trail order a mission of mercy. >> my stesst out. >> reporter: her sister lives on pleasant valley road where flames destroyed several homes. at the roadblock on highway 128 and road 87, bryce talked police into letting them through with

an escort of yolo county escort service officers. when they arrived, they found paula nichols' home intact. so was her father-in-law's home next door. only because they spent a sleepless night dousing hot spots. >> it was very scary. once it hit on the back side of the house, it felt like a fire storm. just swirling, winds were blowing, embers everywhere. >> reporter: they may have won the battle but they decided to get the two horses away from the line of fire to stay with cora and paula's dad. it's been a while since the horses have been in a trailer and a first they were a little hesitant. finally they child aboard. they're headed to relative safety but the nichols will stay with their two dogs and two cats prepared to save their home the same way they did last night. >> water it down, shovels, bottled water, everything we can

get our hands on to put out anything that was going. >> reporter: i want you to know, the rescue mission was successful. the rescue mission was successful. it doesn't mean it was easy. the pick-up truck they used to tow the trailer, the engine conked out. they managed to get it started and then one of the tires on the trailer went flat. the horses are away from the fire area. it passed the chp roadblock and occasionally they are let in to go check on those animals. we're watching the ash continuing to fall from the sky. live in yolo county, abc7 news. >> all right. thank you. at least they got the horses out. what a ride that must have been. how about this ride? dramatic video showing how intense the situation was for a driver fleeing his home in

winters this morning. imagine yourself driving through this. matt thomas recorded this video as he drove through a wall of flames along digger pine ridge road. visibility poor because of the smoke and the flames. thomas and other homeowners were ordered to evacuate when the fire erupted near lake solano park. it was so intense, the taillight on his truck melted. unbelievable. vacaville homeowner said he had only a few moments to evacuate when first responders came knocking on his door overnight. >> we just grabbed a bunch of clothes and got the cats and dogs and headed off to >> he rushed to safety with his wife and 3-year-old twins in tow. they had just moved to a ranch with a five acre pear orchard. he said the fire butted up right to his property line but he's

in marin county will this is the woodward fire. that is in the point reyes station. a lot has been charred but there's obviously a lot of fuel from the forest there and the dry conditions. >> hard to get to. difficult terrain. that was live. this is tape. video from one of the fires burning in the south bay. this is the la honda fire. the smoke is so thick there at the state park where she spent the day with families who had to evacuate. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, the czu fire is growing out of control and part of the problem is resources are stretched too thin. that's certainly the case here. we are just north of the ng ove

ridge and it has grown twice in size over the last couple hours. what you don't see are the dozens of families lining the coastline anxious to see if their home is still there. crackling flames lit up the road. right on the border of the san mateo/santa cruz county line. >> you can see the sky was red and you can hear noise outside. we checked in with our neighbors. longer material residents. and they were concerned and decided to just, that we needed to leave. so that's our front porch looking out. >> reporter: she watched her hole burn to the ground. >> it was hard. we had actually a live cam on our front porch. i could see the live footage. i could see the names right in front of the front door. and at first, after a while, it

looked like it dissipated. the names dissipated. but i put the volume up on the live cam and it sounded like the fire was coming from the back. house. and the camera ended up shutting off like 30 minutes later. >> no notification ahead of time. >> he lived nearby. he, too, watched his newly remodeled home burn will i think one fire truck will help. they can save these parts. he says the evacuation warnings and the help came too late. >> we had other things we were going to get. some mementos and other things from my mom. >> but time randal out giving little home to these families. li osme.ive a the r
