home have bunched here in solano county and the fire is still a major threat. >> people in sonoma county are under evacuation orders and warning tonight. we're hearing from people who are packing up and others who are deciding to stay. residents in south bay are searching for annes. >> smoke smothering our skies today. i'll let you know how long and when cooler air arrives coming up. now from abc 7, live breaking news. and tonight more families across the bay area are being told to leave their homes and do it now. fires continue to burn in eight counties. smoke blanketing the entire region. just in the past two hours, here are the developments. the entire area of danvenport ad santa cruz county have been told to evacuate.

>> more than a dozen fires are raging in every bay area county but san francisco. cal fire has grouped them by region to the north the lnu lightning complex fire. in the east way, the scu lightning complex fire. and to the south, the czu august fire. and across the state cal fire today there are more than 60 fires that started because of lightning strikes this week. >> cal fire tonight says there is extreme fire behavior. fires burning in four north bay counties. napa, sonoma, solano and lake. seven fires have burned a total of 14 h. 124,000 acres. the most destructive started in napa and pushed deep into solano county today. >> in the east bay, a disastrous combination of dry fuel, gusty wind and hilly terrain fires in alameda, contra-costa and santa clara counties could explode in size. burning at least 102,000 acres.

new evacuation order have been issued tonight for residents east of san jose's city limits. >> residents of coastal communities all the way south to davenport and santa cruz county have been told to evacuate. five large fires and a number of smaller ones burning in both counties have claimed 10,000 acres with zero percent containment. you can see how intense the flaps there are tonight and there are a lot of embers flying around. >> images show the chaos when the wildfire in fairfield flared and jumped across 80. this picture shows the sky a golden hue from the flames. traffic backed up on northbound lanes of 80 just before the freeway shut down. people frantically escaped the flames and they found themselves stuck in evacuation traffic. these people were ordered out of fairfield's rancho solano neighborhood. j.r. stone was in solano county where homes were lost to the wildfire. it's led to large scale

evacuations. >> reporter: yeah, certainly the good news tonight is that i-80 is back open, but this area has taken a beating and continues to take one. you can see the sign directly behind me melted. more than 46,000 acres here in solano county have burned. not only that, but if you look over at the guardrail, it is still on fire tonight. even travis air force base was evacuated. flames shooting into the air late wednesday night as the structure burns on cherry glenn road in vacaville. it does not appear as though anyone was hurt, but the fire in this rural area has been intense. >> it's the scariest thing that we've ever seen. it was -- the heat. it came so fast. >> reporter: stacey klein lives a mile or so down the road from this location. her home didn't burn but a second home in the area did. you can see the damage. it's hard to make out much of anything. >> i'm just very grateful. very grateful to my husband and

his three friends. they're the ones that fought this fire today. >> reporter: while it was stacey's husband and friends who saved their home, it was firefighters battling along the hills in fairfield. ben shot this video of an air tanker dropping fire retardant in hopes of saving his home and others in the area. >> we're hoping and praying that it's going to work out. >> reporter: so far so good in their rolling hills neighborhood, but the fire spread across i-80, threatening more homes in the paradise valley of fairfield. in fact, one fire began burning in the center divider of i-80. >> i live up in vacaville trying to get home from work in vallejo. >> reporter: frustrating, yes, but talk to most of these evacuees and they'll tell you they're thankful for one reason or another. >> they did this. they saved it. i have a home now still. >> reporter: and back out here live in fairfield, you can see again one of these guardrails

still on fire. this evening. now, air support was used early in the daytime hours here, but it just became so smokey that we didn't see them later in the evening. still lots of evacuations out here tonight. reporting live in fairfield, j.r. stone, abc 7 news. all right. j.r., thank you. right up 80 from fairfield a little south of vacaville is california state prison solano and a department of corrections medical facility. officials say they are not being directed to evacuate at this time. in the north bay more residents were told to be ready to leave at any moment. fires making up the lnu complex are burning ever-closer to neighborhoods. lauren martinez is live at the sonoma county fair grounds where people who have been evacuated are gathering tonight. lauren? >> reporter: dan, there are two fires burning in western sonoma county. the myers fires and the wallbridge fire. the wallbridge fire grew from

1,500 acres today to 14,000. now tonight all residents in healedsburg received an evacuation warning. people we spoke with today say they're used to preparing and packing. riz dents in healedsburg are loading up their cars. >> clothe, pictures, you know, things that can't be replaced. >> reporter: just in case the evacuation warnings from the myers and wallbridge fires burning in western sonoma county become orders. >> just trying to get ready. we kind of waited until the last minute last year and kind of learned our lesson. so getting everything ready now. >> my papers and my suitcase. >> reporter: bertha packed her suitcase last night. she's lived at this home for 51 years. she's not too worried. >> i feel comfortable because i get the warnings. and that makes me feel safe. but you know what? i think i'm going to be -- we're going to be okay. >> reporter: residents on will owe creek road are under a mandatory evacuation order where some are choosing to stay.

contra-costa, alameda, stanislaus, san joaquin and santa clara make up the fire. continue to burn in steep, rulgd terrain. that's according to cal fire tonight. and the day's developments brought a number of evacuation warnings and orders to a lot of people, but it also caused a lot of confusion over evacuation. abc 7 news reporter live to explain what's going on. amanda? >> reporter: yeah, dan, we want to get you straight to an example of that confusion. about 90 minutes ago san jose councilman tweeted out if you live along piedmont road, you are safe. the danger zone has not expanded to that area yet. i know some of you may have received text messages calling you to evacuate, but those messages are not precise. do not panic. the clarification posted to social media. others around the south bay say there should be a better way to

reach residents. about 20 separate fires across five different counties have torched more than 100,000 acres. the massive scu lightning complex fire put parts of santa clara county under evacuation orders and warnings wednesday, but instead of immediate alerts, residents say they've been relying on social media. >> this is where i've gotten most of my accurate information through twitter. >> reporter: jacquelin garcia lives in the san jose foothills. her house just a mile and a half near a neighborhood under evacuation orders. she says direction offered doesn't paint a clear picture of who needs to leave. >> are you talking about us? how far up the mountain are we talking? that makes it really hard for the residents to really understand how close the fire is, how urgent it is. >> reporter: cal fire addressed evacuations in a video posted to twitter. >> it can be very complicated. just know we are doing everything in our power to ensure that these are smooth and we are giving you plenty of time to get these warnings and orders executed. >> reporter: searching for the same answers, resident estella

esque la used twitter to reach the mayor. >> he was kind enough to respond and say that my specific area wasn't being evacuated. >> reporter: but both women are already packed and ready to go ahead of any evacuation warning. they say by the time an order is issued, there will be no delay for their families. the san jose fire captain echoing the need to be ready. >> when the evacuation order comes, get out now. that doesn't mean ten minutes from now. it means get out now. >> reporter: and there are two evacuation sites for residents impacted by the scu lightning complex fire. that includes creekside middle school in patterson and the milpitas library. in the south bay, abc 7 news. thank you, amanda. the red cross has changed its response to these wildfires due to the covid-19 pandemic. >> the last thing we will do will open congregate shelters. we'll try to have fewer people in those shelters. hopefully no more than 50

people. we'll do the social distancing. our volunteers will be in protective equipment. they'll be as folks come in they'll be screened for their health. >> the red cross says it's encouraging evacuees to stay with family or friends. so far the organization has secured about 15 hotel rooms for evacuees. if the need significantly grows, shelters will open. and of course we are tracking the weather that the firefighters are facing as they try to get these fires contained right now, dan. >> yeah, ama, that's so critical, obviously. wind, heat have been a factor. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the forecast tonight. sandhya? >> yeah, dan and ama, i have good news and bad news. we'll get to the fire conditions in just a moment. from our mount tam cam, take a look at the smoke that choke the bay area. this is a time lapse taking you back in time showing you the fire that is burning near the san mateo county border. as you take a look at the current conditions, moderate air quality for parts of santa cruz, san jose.

it is poor for sensitive groups from the peninsula into the east bay. and as you will notice, fairfield is in the moderate category. it has improved in many areas from earlier this morning, but a spare the air is in effect due to those wildfire smoke. poor to unhealthy air quality again tomorrow. as you take a look at the conditions near the north bay fires. temperatures are falling. humidity is creeping up. the winds are still light, fortunately. the onshore winds are going to pick up which will increase the humidity tomorrow. that's the blessing. the curse for the firefighters, the winds are going to increase, they'll have to battle that out. conditions near la honda, 77 degrees so it is cooler. the humidity coming up. the winds are light. dan and ama, i'll be back with a closer look at your air quality plus a look at when the cooler weather will arrive coming up. >> all right. thank you, sandhya. the scu lightning fire is

encroaching on the observetory. >> a really heartbreaking scene captured today in berryessa highlands and that's in napa county. the lnu lightning complex fire consumed an entire block of homes and flames could be seen on both sides of layer berryessa. just a terrible scene there. california's oldest state park, big basin redwoods in santa clara county suffered extensive wildfire damage, sad to say. california state parks shared the news in a tweet also stating the agency has closed several state parks. big basin was established in 1902 and is home to a redwood dubbed the father of the forest that is more than 2,000 years old. several people were hurt in the scu lightning complex fire in the area burning on the border of stanislaus and san joaquin counties. the flames have plenty of fuel to burn. you can follow fire statewide with our sclifr wildfire tracker updated with the latest

lot of crews out of an abundance of caution. governor newsom addressed the wildfires today. he said the state has a world-class mutual aid system in place. the scope and magnitude of the fires, to anything we've seen before. >> quite literally people come from all over the world to this building to learn about the california example. but let me also make this point. it's the point you're making. we are experiencing fires the likes of which we haven't seen in many, many years. >> the governor also spoke about the ongoing requests to conserve power to avoid rolling blackouts. newsom says he anticipates this was the last night, for now, that cal iso warned of possible outages. >> we're looking forward to things cooling down in the west coast of the united states. we're anticipating that's going toe hetch with our energy procurement. allow us to work through when we're not having these flex alerts. >> the possibility of rolling blackouts tonight was called off.

>> several school districts in sonoma county have cancelled distance learning tomorrow because of fire danger. while the solano county office of education says distance learning has been suspended for the rest of the week in three school districts there. san jose state university cancelled classes today. online classes will resume tomorrow, but most campus buildings will be closed. all east bay parks not near the shoreline are also closed. you can see and smell the smoke from the wildfires all over the bay area. it is creating an unhealthy breathing environment. this comes amidst already heightened concerns because of covid-19. abc 7 news reporter chris winn has more on how some are handling the smoke. >> reporter: just when you thought things couldn't get worse during the coronavirus crisis, residents throughout the bay are now dealing with unhealthy air quality brought on by the wildfires. >> i'm thinking, what did i do, you know? what since did i commit to be put into the seventh depth of hell, man? it's burning. >> reporter: edwin has been

struggling with the smoke. he has plenty of experience working outdoors but isn't sure if he'll make through the day even with the use of a respirator. >> it's unbelievable. i've never encountered this before with the humidity and the heat and now this. with everything else going on. >> reporter: officials with the barea air quality management district have issued a spare the air alert through sunday with a recommendation for residents to keep their windows and doors closed at all times until smoke levels subside. that smoke is essentially stuck between the mountain ranges across the region. >> hopefully if we can get the winds to come in and shift, they can blow that smoke out, but right now it's being trapped at the surface. >> reporter: any relief will ultimately depend on the weather in the comes days. in the meantime, concerns kompany continue to grow, especially for vulnerable populations who may not have access to air conditioning. >> what we do know is that even within an hour of someone being exposed to wildfire smoke, there are increases in respiratory

cardiac disorders. >> this doctor, the director of air pollution and health at stanford's parker center for mazz and allergy research says studies have shown there tends to be higher rates of covid-19 in areas with elevated air pollution. health experts now urging the public to take their advice seriously. >> restrict your activity. check what the levels are before you would even consider going outside. and, you know, do as much as you can to avoid exposure to the smoke. >> reporter: the lingering smell combined with a sprinkling of ash causing frustration for many. in san jose, chris winn, abc 7 news. air quality in the barea was the worst in the world today. the purple air map shows real-time air quality readings around the bay area. you can see the thick band of purple readings along the peninsula. really, dan, you stepped outside and knew it was going to be bad,

seeing the sky just brown today. >> where i am in the east bay, you could smell, almost taste a e . >> i want to show you a sunset from our emeryville camera just to show you how bad the smoke was. look how reddish and hazy it is as the sun was setting from our emeryville camera tonight. do expect more sunsets like this. as we take a look at the satellite picture, just smoke filling much of california. not just the barea because of all the fires that are burning. over 300 fires and on radar you can pick up the signature of the smoke and where those fires were actually blowing because of the wind direction. here's a look at live dopplar 7 right now. still waiting for that fog. don't see much in there right now but that will be changing

come tomorrow. temperatures right now, 50, 60s, coast side. inland areas are in the 80s. now today we did have one record, oakland, downtown, 83 degrees. the previous record was set in 1974. temperatures inland got up to the mid-100s, but they cooled down from yesterday. cooling will continue and you'll feel it. the onshore winds are going to ramp up as we head toward tomorrow afternoon. that's going humidity and drop our temperatures, but the winds agoring to be a battle. seeing the haze over the bay. smokey hazy the next several days. breezy and cooler tomorrow and humid with a slight chance of thunder sunday night into tuesday. imexplain that in just a second. the smoke forecast showing the smoke settling as we head toward tomorrow morning and it's getting blown as you will notice by the onshore winds away from us briefly tomorrow afternoon and evening, but we're still going to be impacted it.
