his home, a large garage, a barn now lay in ruins when so many others around him survived. >> normally i would see cal fire trucks, bumper-to-bumper, rolling down the road, any time there is a fire up the road toward berryessa. this time there was not one fire truck to be seen. i talked on an officer as i left 4:00 in the morning on wednesday. i asked him, where are all the fire trucks? he said out saving lives. >> reporter: for all who live here, it has been an extremely stressful two days except for some small spot fires, the flames have moved on. what is left in their wake is hard to comprehend. even for those who stood tall as the flames went by. >> she survived in her pasture. it went all the way around her. >> reporter: her horseas fine along with the house but the beloved barn was a total loss.

above them. and contemplated evacuating. >> fingers crossed. i think it may be moving away. >> reporter: one can only hopeful because back on mill creek road, the remnants only hint at what used to be here. a mail route. a beautiful drive through the woods that isn't anymore. and all complaining drive, the stuff of memories turned to ash. seth used to live here. >> there's about a six bedroom house there that is gone. two houses on the left, one on the right, within the next couple hundred yards. >> reporter: we asked seth howl homes he thinks survived? >> two houses out of probably 15. >> reporter: it is too early to know and almost too painful to guess. >> and we're back live in healdsburg. let me show you an interesting contrast. that's blue sky, clearly, right next to us. i'll show you how close we are to the fire. that's smoke obscuring from the sun right on the border line.

as we assistant here at the dry creek valley, no evacuation but ashes are falling all around us. hive in sonoma valley. >> wage, thank you. in the east bay, the snu complex acres in alameda, contra costa. it is 5% contained. evacuation orders have been issued for residents eat east of san jose city limits but not everyone is leaving. stephanie? >> reporter: we just learned the largest portion of the 20 fires that make up the scu lightning complex is moving south. i want to step out and show what you we're seeing. no hazy sky which is hovering over the east foot hills. that large plume of smoke that is towering over the foot hills here. it is significantly better than

back to 1902. so we fight hard to keep it. >> reporter: their cattle, a sml of the 22 neighborhoods forced to evacuate across santa clara, alameda and contra costa county. cal fire working around the clock to save what they can, up to 6200 homes threatened. just like these men who despite orders to evacuate, are not giving up hope. >> i'm a fate ighter. i'm going to make sure everything is safe. >> reporter: here's another live picture of that smoke billowing in the distance. it is certainly hot out here. in the dry heat, low humidity, it is really making this fire difficult to contain. i just spoke to cal fire and they are concerned this fire will continue growing out of control. given resources are stretched too thin. especially because a lotfires,

them. they're starting to conjoin together so that's a big concern. abc7 news. >> thank you. take a look at this map. you can get a better idea of where evacuations are from where the scu complex. the area in red is under mandatory evacuations and the area in yellow is currently under an evacuation warning. let's check in with spencer. >> just a terrible situation. as the fires expand and merge, it makes it challenging to get specific information from specific locations. so let me give you what we have with fires around the bay area. a look at conditions. dangerously low humidity, 20%. the wimbledon is light there. that's good news. five-mile-per-hour gusts, similar conditions. well, windier at the hennessey fire. gusts 16 miles per hour there.

the wind is out of the north generally. very low there. 31%. temperatures, 86 degrees. it's not hot but it is try and breezy. at vacaville, it's hot. the relative humidity is at 47%. still low but not dangerously low. the winds, the steady wind has been light but the gusts are up to 16-miles-per-hour. and going down to the santa cruz mountains, several fires burning in different locations. near la honda, 77 degrees. not very hot there. the humidity, 43%, low but not dangerously low. here is a look at the bigger picture right now. surface wind is getting lighter generally across the north bay. still quite breezy and gusty near the coach and into some of the south bay locations. in the higher elevations, the gusts are even stronger and we've got gusts on 23-miles-per-hour. mt. tam, 22, mt. diablo. so fighting fires in the higher elevations will be challenging.

santa cruz and san mateo counties. 20 structures have been destroyed and new evacuation orders were ordered this afternoon for the canyon in santa cruz county. evacuation warnings have been as well as the uc santa cruz campus. let's go straight to abc7 news reporter chris reyes live in scots valley with a look at the situation there. chris? [ silent ] >> reporter: this is huge. this is almost unprecedented. we've had very little significant fire history in this area and yet we have these amazing huge redwoods everywhere. >> reporter: at cal fire base kaffir, crews from all over the bay area and beyond. we spotted fire trucks from los angeles county. wereer because didn't have the resources to get

out there and put eyes on them because we were busy battling other fires. >> reporter: now the fires are closing in on dozens of ities. cal fire estimating more than 8,000 structures are being threatened. we drove through ben loaman completely deserted and thick with smoke. on highway 9 drivers lined up desperate to get back to their homes but were turned away at road blocks. the owners of this grocery store in boulder creek hg trying to gather food for firefighters. other residents were just in a frenzy to get out. >> basically, everybody is trying to save their homes and things like that. that's what i'm doing. >> the big basin hasn't burned in a long time. there is a tunnel of fuel up there. when i heard propane tanks were starting to explode close enough to the top of my road, i got out. >> reporter: for residents able to get out, she's hopeful they'll be spared. >> there's not enough people to

do the job in the fire, it's crazy. trying to keep kittens in a sket. >> reporter: again, scots valley has been put under an evacuation warning. and i'm seeing drivers in their cars full ofelongings ready to get out. now also cal fire's station is just down the street. they're hoping they won't to have move locations. we'll be hearing from they will at 6:00. we'll bring you the live briefing at the 6:00 show. chris reyes, abc7 news. >> thank you. the smoke is so incredibly 36 in that shot. california's oldest state park under siege because of fire. sky 7 video, the redwood state park shows the smoke filling thy sky. what happen here is part of the czu line complex fires in the santa cruz mountains, stretched right into the park. multiple structures destroyed including the historic headquarters, the nature central, as well as camp

grounds. it features ancient redwoods, some dating back to 1902. they have not given us an update on the extent of the damage to the redwoods. the river fire is 7% contained. cal fire says this fire was sparked by line on sunday. six structures have been destroyed. more than 2,700 remain threatened so evacuation orders are still i place. today, the fire ceped north to where the outlyi of salinas. the school veterinarian facebook page shows some of the animals being treated there. they include an 11-year-old draft horse named ava. she was the soul survivor of a nurse who lost her home. also being treated, a welsh pony and an alpaca they dubbed

camilo. and anyone who needs help getting large or small animals moved out of harm's way can call. they posted these photos on its twitter page today. all right. what we need is a change in the weather. we're starting to get a change but we're not sure how much that will help. >> we are getting a change. we have a deep yepping marine layer and that will, the good news is that we get a little cooldown and an increase in humidity. the not so good news is that it often, as the marine layer in -- as it surges, it brings an increase in winds. we get breezy conditions near the coastal it is cooling down. you can see the temperature change shows a couple degrees cooler in san francisco than at this hour yesterday. three degrees coolerha oakland.

and 10 to 13 degrees cooler than yesterday. we take a look at the surface wind flow. 30-mile-per-hour gusts in san francisco. that's what you get when the marine layer is deepening. it is generally not too windy in the north bay. it is quite breezy just about everywhere else. so on we go to a vw of showinga. it is just 66 at half moon bay. napa, 81, fairfield, 85, concord, 91. and another view from the east bay hills. you can see how widespread the smoke is and how deep it is. it will be with us for the next few days through the weekend. turning warmer tomorrow and saturday. it will get more humid on sunday with a slight chance of

thundershowers sunday evening into monday. and here's a look at our air quality. we have very poor air quality just about everywhere across the bay area. and we have a spare the air alert through sunday. we expect poor air quality to continue tonight for the next three days at least. the forecast an place shows the deepening marine layer. the big change is the temperatures dropping today and tonight and a little increase in the wind and humidity. the marine layer will pull back to the coastline tomorrow as it often does. tonight, look for low temperatures, perhaps slightly cooler than last night. mid to upper 50s on the coast. about 60, 61 degrees along the bay shoreline. we'll see some upper 50s to about 60. then in the inland areas, it is a little milder there with low temperatures in the 60s.

the latest out in on the coronavirus pandemic. the u.s. has more than 5.5 million cases in california. cases increased today to more than 644,000. hospitalizations in the state are continuing to trend downward. in the bay area's nine counties, there have been 76,661 cases. this includes people who have recovered. despite governor newsom suggesting that san francisc could come off the watch list, it didn't happen today. melanie woodrow explains why. >> san francisco remains on the watch list having not met state

so far the fires have burned a total of 131,000 acres in five counties. we're talking napa, sonoma, solano, lake andç yolo. today sonoma county sheriff issued a reminder for evacuees. once you get out, you need to stay out. >> we have had some minor reports of people resbrg evacuation areas and they've had to be rescued. when we have to rescue you from an evacuation area, it creates a secondary burden on police and fire services and adds to the problem. so please stay out of those evacuated areas. >> cal fire reports the lnu complex line fires have so far destroyed 105 structures and another 31,000 are still

threatened. eric thomas is live near travis air force base. nonessential people were told to evacuate. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, the latest is that we've noticed the breezes have picked up noticeably in the last hour or so and that's never a good thing when you have wildfires burning nearby. you can see if you look at the traffic coming in, these are essential personnel at travis air force base. the mandatory evacuation order is still in effect there. just a couple miles. in direction, a mandatory evacuation order has been lifted. >> a little bit stressful. >> reporter: she and her two kids were walking off a bit of. stress in their fairfield neighborhood a couple miles away from travis air force base. last night there was no time for a calming walk. >> the police department sent a message for us to be evacuated. we packed and we were ready to

go. >> reporter: that was just after flames jumped across interstate 80 igniting the brush. firefighters rush in the to battle the fire and closed do you believe the freeway. when the flames were out, a police update went out. >> this morning they uplifted the evacuation so we just settling, waiting, what is next. "p>> reporter: and keeping thei bags packed and ready to go. evacuations are still ordered at the economic heart of the area. >> it skimmed over i-80. it got folks' blum up. >> reporter: last night travis air force base moved up all nonessential person and he will families from the sprawling base and that's not all. >> they made the call to stre evacuate the aircraft as well. getting them off the installation just in case is honestly just the right thing to do. >> reporter: some planes went to washington state. others went to texas. given the weather forecast and

together. >> reporter: fire officials say mandatory evacuation orders will be based on just how far and how fast the fire spreads. in the meantime, an evacuation central has been evacuation order has been issued. this afternoon, sky 7 flew over the czu lightning complex fire in the santa cruz mountains. people in san gregorio to davenport in santa cruz county have been told they have to evacuate. abc7 news reporter julian glover with more now. >> reporter: overnight, the complex fire exploded to 40,000 acres, burning in both san mateo and santa cruz counties. officers seen going door to door in uponie dune where several homes were burned new evacuation orders came down. >> i couldn't stress more the importance of leaving when those orders come out. i really can't. there are people that are unaccounted for.

>> reporter: at a news conference this morning, they are urging everyone the leave when told with at least 22,000 people in the evacuation area. the veteran cal fire firemen calling the conditions unprecedented. highway 9 in santa cruz county, one of the main exit routes covered in thick smoke. in felton, names surrounding both sides -- flames surrounding on both sides. we caught this home fully engulfed as the fire inched closer to this suv. >> all of it gone. the homeowner jake was rattled out of his home at 2:00 this morning by a gas explosion. >> it broke windows at my house. and i jumped out of bed. thank god. or i would be sleeping in a house on fire. >> his wife and two daughters left for safety. he stayed behind to save what he could. >> i have my flip flops and my shorts. my boxers. that's all that's left.

>> reporter: he was overcome with emotion and disappointed by the response by fire crews. >> there was no response. still isn't. >> reporter: meanwhile, cal fire warns with several massive active wildfires, the resources are stretched thin. >> we have very limited firefighting resources. the emergency response capabilities here in california have been pushed to their sentence. >> reporter: abc7 news. >> today fema authorized a grand to help fight czu line complex. it provides federal funning to 75% of eligible firefighting costs. a grant has been authorized for the lnu lightning fire up north. for residents near the lnu complex fire which includes the hennessey fire, this feeling is all too familiar. theate las fire burned in much of the same area in 2017.

president trump implied the federal government should not help the firefighting efforts or fund them in california saying california hasn't cleaned the floors. >> maybe we'll have to make them pay for it. they don't listen to us. you look at some of these fires they don't really catch where the trees are going because they're wet. the water is pouring up the tree. they mocked us when i said, you have to clean your floors. >> mr. trump says clean the floors is just an expression for removing debris like old trees from the forest floors. the president made those comments at a rally in pennsylvania. the smoke from the wildfires burning across the bay area is responsible for the unhealthy air quality throughout the region. as residents simultaneously deal with tpandemic, many have questions about the effectiveness of the face coverings we're using.

all around the rest of the bay area, the air quality is quite poor. it looks like we have a spare the air alert for the next three days through sunday and perhaps longer if we don't get a significant change in wind flow, in weather conditions and of course, more containment over the fires. low temperature mainly in the upper 50s to low 60. it will range to mid 90s innd. it will be a couple of degrees warmer on saturday. we'll call it hot inland. hazy with poor air quality continuing through weekend. there may be a shower or two late sunda into monday and then for the remaineder of next week, hey, my twitter is blowing up!

this is the last night the democrats have to make their pitch to the country and we expect biden will continue to make the case we've heard throughout the week that he can restore compassion and decency to the white house but also talk about what he will do for the country. biden will be joined by his family and there will be a special tribute to his late son bo before his final remarks. of course last night we saw the cabrera's own kamala harris officially make history by becoming the first woman of color to semia vice presidential nomination. she very much showed her personal side, talking about her mother her bay area roots growing up in oakland and berkeley. seth curry and his wife have announced their endorsement of biden. they will appear in this video that features their daughters. other speakers we'll be hearing from include democratic candidates andrew yang, cory booker, pete buttigieg and michael bloomberg.
