forced from their homes, mandatory evacuations spreading from santa cruz county, a mother escapes with her young children in the middle of the night, only to come back to this. restaurant owners are dealing with the loss of outdoor dining because of fire smoke. >> we will let you how long the air quality will continue to suffer, coming up. abc news 7 at 11:00 starts now. >> now, breaking news. >> that breaking news, four new deaths reported tonight in the l and u lightning complex fires burning in the north bay. that includes three victims in napa county, and three -- >> these areas are under mandatory evacuation.

if you are there, the sheriff said, leave now. >> the evacuation orders have expanded in santa cruz county. take a look at the powerful new video. it shows firefighters on the front lines, battling flames trying to save homes near the boulder creek golf course. >> the fires have torched close to 60,000 acres. tonight, scotts valley residents and the uc santa cruz are the latest to be evacuated. >> we are live with the details tonight. amanda? >> reporter: the fire is zero percent contained and that marks another night of evacuations in santa cruz county. those in scotts valley and uc santa cruz are the latest to receive the official notice to leave and it only came a few hours ago. it's this scene across the ccu august lightning complex fires.

forcing continued mandatory evacuations. a look at boulder creek in santa cruz county thursday evening. homes are actively burning. cars charred, since is igniting the devastation and ongoing danger has led to the evacuation of close to 50,000 people. >> you are hearing about some of the other surrounding fires. we are standing guard, the best way we know how. >> for scotts valley resident, the best way to stand guard now means getting out of town. the evacuation orders for the city, leave now. >> i have never seen anything like this. >> after 7:30. uc santa cruz, announced all of the employees and students on campus had to leave immediately. that is 1200 residents and they have been told they may not return for two weeks. and evacuations center at the board walk is made available for displaced staff and students. however, the need for shelter expands far beyond the college campus. jason, with santa cruz county said they are putting out

requests for donations of water and family sized tents. >> our shelter capacity is limited here. putting people inside tents inside the shelter to control the pandemic. and the disaster at the same time. >> the county is asking visitors to stay away. they say, any out of towners staying overnight are taking shelter for those evacuating. they are completely sold out for displaced residents and the same here. >> we want to clear out whatever we can to make space for if local residents. >> reporter: the county wants to keep the roads clear, understanding there's little access in and out of the region as of the latest update thursday evening. the fire is zero percent contained. torching close to 50 acres. the fires threaten 21,000 structures, forcing more residents on out of their homes.

burned through here. >> it breaks my heart. it's a fire we have been worried about for decades. >> reporter: that is what they are describing in the fire today. he toured the browned out zone today. >> anybody know how many houses burned last night? >> no, people are electthrowing round estimates of 15-20. no confirmed numbers. >> reporter: everyone knew to worry. not far away, residents watched the gathering smoke and the planes above them fighting and contemplated evacuating. >> fingers crossed, i think it may be moving away from us. >> one can only hope, because back on mill creek road the remnants hint of what used to be here. a mail route, a beautiful drive through the woods that isn't anymore. and all along the drive, the stuff of memories turned to ash. seth used to live here.

>> there's a six bedroom house there that is gone. two houses on the left. one house on the right. and a couple of hundred had yards. >> reporter: we asked seth how many homes he thinks survived? >> two houses out of probably 15. >> again, it is too early to know. and almost too painful to guess. >> clearly this is not a fire that will be going away any time soon. we will have to see what tomorrow brings. in hieldsburg, wayne freedman. abc7 news. >> the fire is the primary focus. the chief of santa rosa fire said they are struggling with lack of resources. >> there's no more equipment out there. we have been on the line since it started and they are still out there, it's a very difficult situation. when you don't have crews that you can rotate in. >>. it has destroyed the most homes in the three complex fires, 105

have been destroyed. many still threatened. several evacuation orders are in affect. fires are encroaching on two communication towers. make sure you have multiple ways to get information about evacuations and crews may not be able to stay a stand to save armstrong woods. >> we don't have the people to keep that fire out of the woods. it is not a flaming front that you would see from a more devastating fire. >> cal fire officials say a hurricane brewing to the south could bring lightning that could pose the risk of more fires. >> in total, more than 420,000 acres have burned in three main fire zones in the bay area. that gives you a per

here, completely destroyed. a total loss. but the fortunate part, is that the family is okay tonight. they were able to get out safely. >> he told me we needed evacuate quickly. >> reporter: she is describing the moments she left her now destroyed home with her 1, 3 and 4-year-old in the middle of the night. >> we literally ran out with no shoes. my older daughter said, i don't have shoes on. and i said, i don't either, it's okay, i need you to be a big girl and i need you to listen and get in the car seat. >> reporter: that was 2:30 in the morning tuesday and this is what the home looks like now. more than 48 hours later. a complete loss. jessica's husband seth was working that night. he said that he is thankful his wife and children made it out and still wonders if he could have saved their home. >> if i was here, i felt like i could have turned on the

sprinklers and dampened everything down, i think i could have salvaged it. i don't know. >> the sheriff estimates that 62,000 acres burned. all part of the lightning complex fire. includes several homes on nearby english hills road. they say, there's not much left in the home. pool toys and a toy shopping cart can be seen. they have only lived here for eight months but were so excited and had referred to it as their forever home. >> we are devastated. i also feel the love of our families and our friends and people who reached out. and to them, i am very >> so happy they are safe, and you can see all the damage out here. seth does tell me, that he was able to find one heirloom, p being apistol that was a family

heirloom and the american flag made it out okay. >> the wood ridge fire has burned 2,000 acres and an evacuation warning is still in affect on a 11 mile stretch west of highway 1. no injuries have been reported and no structures have been damaged. this fire has zero percent containment. the largest wild fire is the scu light anything complex, made up of 20 lightning sparked fires burning through the east bays. you can see how large the fire is on the wide fire tracker. the fires are burning in parts of five counties. cal fire reported that the fire has grown to 157,000 acres. dry heat, low humidity and breezy conditions are making this fire difficult to control. firefighters are getting some help from neighbors. >> we have been fighting the fire back there for two days with tractors and we have saved some homes and such back there.

>> in total, 20,000 homes are threatened, it is only 5% contained. >> restaurants that are already struggling because of the pandemic are facing another challenge tonight. talking about the wildfires. take a look at the smoke and haze that blanketed much of the bay area today. it's probably terrible where you live. as abc7 found, business owners are facing difficult choices tonight. >> smoke from the fire burning in sonoma county is coating the east bay, creating unhealthy air quality. ♪ >> reporter: in lafayette this italian restaurant had roughly 80 cancellations from outdoor diners. >> you know, it's tough, because, you know, we cannot sit inside. you cannot sit outside. >> reporter: customers with to go orders say the smoke is hard being at hope, especially for

time readings. for the latest on smoke and fire conditions, here's abc news motel sandya patel. >> yeah, and i want to show you the extend of the smoke that has been blanketing the bay area. it's the satellite picture from earlier today, you can see, just the smoke covering much of california and including the bay area. and traveling is far as the northern rockies. all the way in to idaho and nevada and also in to montana. so, really immense as you can see here. the hue is the dark brown abovethe fog layer. good news is for those firefighters. they have come up near the fires in the forth bay right now. temperatures are dropping. low to upper 70s. humidity 47% skmmpt the winds have eased from earlier this evening. near the san matteo county, santa cruz county fire.

a tow truck driver's heroic act helped residents know it was time to move from the dangerous fire. >> hey, let's go! come on, lady, the fire is here! >> brian smith was recording with his cell phone when he drove his had truck through a neighborhood in the middle of the night yesterday. he blared the air horn to wake sleeping residents. and he hollared to them that the fire was moving closer to homes. he took it upon himself after hearing on the scanners that the fast moving flames may beat the firefighters to the neighborhood. >> video recorded showed how intense the fires are. had this was taken by an alert wild fire camera. part of a network of 500 monitoring devices. you can see the fire is trong

and seco -- is strong and seconds later, the camera is engulfed. this is the first time that the cameras have been destroyed. >> two other cameras in the bay area were torched. the final freeze frames were shown. you can see the hennessey fire progressing. another camera cap accident occurred t-- camera cap cap capp moment it was so intense. >> major news tonight, the fourth and final night of the democratic national convention. it culminated in former vice president joe biden, formally accepting the presidential nomination. he delivered a stark speech, saying we can, and we will over come this, as he called it, a season of darkness. liz is here with more on this. liz? >> reporter: dan, this was an intimate serious speech that we saw from joe biden. 20 minutes delivered straight to the camera.

the now vice presidential nominee said character is on the ballot. compassion is on the ballot and it's about winning the heart and soul on america. with fireworks instead of the additional balloon drop and the honking horns instead of cheers, he formally accepted the presidential nomination. this moment of celebration, a contrast to the stark tone of biden's speech. >> it's time for us, for we the people to come together. and make no mistake, united we can and will over come this season of darkness in america. biden delivered a message of unity, and showing he is ready to take on president trump. he said that his number one policy promise as president would be to get control of the virus. >> the president keeps telling us, the virus is going to disappear, he keeps waiting for a miracle. i have news for him.

we have frightening fires going on right now. >> we will need to see what the weather is going to be in the coming days. that will be critical for the firefighters. >> yeah, the conditions will be favorable for the firefighters tonight. going in to tomorrow morning. as the humidity is coming up andthe winds are dropping off considerably. want to show you the view from our east bay health camera, the smokey sunset. the sun is being dimmed by the heavy layer of smoke tonight. as the sun was going down. you could not even see the bay shore line. here's a look at the smoke forecast. tomorrow morning, some of the smoke settles in, as we head toward 10:00 a.m. the pinks that you are seeing are the heaviest smoke on your legend. we will be seeing some of that, especially around some of those big fires that are burning in the bay area. going in to tomorrow afternoon and evening as well. so, it was bad today, it's going to get worse in terms of the smoke. as far as the computer model is going.

that's why the air quality will suffer unhealthy for the inland east bay, santa clara valley, poor for the rest of the region. spare the air alert, all the way through sunday. limit your outdoor time, close your windows and doors and bring your pets inside, and put your heaters and ac on circulate. if you do not have ac, run your fans if it's too warm. good news, we are not expecting any heat coming up. the absence of wind is coming, and humidity has been coming back. that has been helping. many areas in the 70s to 90s range. air quality, not so great. i wish i could say it's terrific. unhealthy for parts of the south bay, you will notice in red, parts on of the east bay and around vacaville, and temperature rights now, upper in thes to the low 70s, it will be a cooler night, tomorrow morning.

you are looking at numbers from the mid 50s to 60s. a hazy smokey condition to start off the day and hazy in the afternoon. breezy with fog near 68 in the bay, and 75 in the city. 87 in san rafel, 80 in oakland, and 94 in livermore. and 96 in concord. it was cooler today from the mid 100s to the mid 90s. tomorrow, temperatures jump just a few degrees. tropical storm geneve. you will notice the left over moisture heading in our direction. so, between sunday, late night in to monday morning, there's a slight chances of showers, computer models are not agreeing. have to keep an eye on this, in the event that there's a potential for a thunderstorm to develop. it is following a similar path to the last tropical storm system. but not exactly. accu weather seven-day forecast. spare the air next three days. smokey hazy skies are
