jobs, protect social security and get a handle on the coronavirus. abc's ines de la cuetara has more highlights from washington. good morning, ines. >> reporter: good morning, will and mona. democrats focusing on the pandemic as joe biden closed out the fourth and final night of the dnc. overnight, former vice president biden officially accepting his party's nomination for president. >> this is a life-changing election. this will determine what america is going to look like for a long, long time. >> reporter: biden laying out a detailed plan to address the covid-19 pandemic while blasting president trump's handling of the crisis. >> our current president's failed in his most basic duty to the nation. he's failed to protect us. he's failed to protect america and, my fellow americans, that is unforgivable. >> reporter: the virtual dnc closing out its fourth and final night with messages from his family.

accused of using nonprofit donations for personal gain. bannon's indictment makes him the sixth person tied to the president's 2016 campaign to face federal charges. this morning, steve bannon out on bail after being charged with money laundering and fraud. a smiling bannon leaving court thursday after pleading not guilty to the charges. >> this entire -- this entire -- >> reporter: he and three others are accused of defrauding hundreds of thousands of people by personally profiting off a scheme to raise money to help build president trump's border wall. >> they see that this is a way that they can take action to actually, you know, make happen a physical barrier on the southern border and support president trump and what president trump's trying to do. >> reporter: with a group called we build the wall, bannon and others raised 25 million promising to build a section of the wall themselves. >> 100% of your money goes towards the wall. >> reporter: the project was

started by brian kolfage, an air force vet who lost three limbs in iraq. he insisted every penny raised would go to the wall. >> i'm taking zero dollars, no compensation. >> reporter: but it shows he received personal items including home renovations, jewelry and even cosmetic surgery and bannon allegedly received more than a million dollars to cover personal expenses. >> the indictment looks really strong. perhaps what's most damning even after they found out about the existence of the investigation, they took extra efforts to cover it up. >> reporter: bannon who served as president trump's chief strategist until 2017 was arrested on the coast of connecticut on this $28 million yacht owned by an exiled chinese billionaire where he has reportedly been living for several months, but as abc's jon karl tells us, his bail agreement means he may have to find new living arrangements. >> he is out on $5 million bail. his travel restricted to the new york and washington areas. he is also not allowed to travel

on private jets or yachts. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump and his team are now downplaying connections to bannon who was fired three years ago. >> i feel very badly. i haven't been dealing with him for a long period of time. >> reporter: during that same interview the president added he never liked the build the wall campaign saying the wall should be a job for the government. bannon faces up to 20 years in prison. next the coronavirus crisis, the director of the cdc says southern states are turning the tide against new cases, but now new concerns about college parties becoming superspreader events as the government releases a new time line on when a vaccine would be widely available. abc's andrea fujii has the details. >> reporter: this morning, a new prediction from government health officials that a coronavirus vaccine may not be available to most people until as late as next june. it comes as positive signs start to emerge amid the pandemic. new data from johns hopkins university showing cases in the u.s. are on the decline for a fourth straight week. overnight philadelphia

announcing that restaurants can open for indoor dining with restrictions starting september 8th, and the macy's thanksgiving day parade will go on this year. new york city's mayor saying it will look different but traditions will stay the same as the president continues to urge all schools to open. new guidelines from policy lab at children's hospital of philadelphia that schools should only re-open in areas where positive test results are less than 5%. >> only a couple of dozen of the 750 counties that we track each week would meet those criteria today. >> reporter: in los angeles it's day two of online learning for the second largest school district in the country, and in indiana a switch to remote learning for one school district after multiple students tested positive. on college campuses health officials say parties like this one at syracuse university must stop. this junior at the university of michigan where more than a dozen students have tested positive wants her classmates to do better. >> your choices will have repercussions.

>> reporter: purdue suspended 36 students for partying and the university of kansas just connected dozens of new covid cases to greek houses on campus. >> i've been feeling pretty anxious honestly. i have really bad asthma. >> reporter: in pro sports two members of the new york mets tested positive forcing their games against the yankees and marlins to be postponed. mona, will. >> andrea, thank you. in northern california, at least five people are now confirmed dead in those wildfires sparked by an unprecedented siege of lightning strikes. fire officials say the largest of those wildfires more than doubled in size in just 24 hours scorching nearly 250 square miles. flames have destroyed hundreds of structures forcing thousands of mandatory evacuations with no containment in sight. and time now for a look at your weather this friday morning. storms off the louisiana coast had at least four waterspouts spinning at the same

time. there could be more of those in that area today. a pair of tropical depressions are moving toward the southeast. one could reach florida by monday possibly as a hurricane. the other could slam into the gulf coast by tuesday. checking temperatures now, it'll be 88 in new orleans, chicago and boston today, still brutally hot for most of the west. the exception is the northwest coast. that's where you want to be. and coming up, actress lori loughlin hours away from learning her fate in the college admissions scandal. will she get prison time? and breaking overnight, another soldier missing from ft. hood. what we're learning about the latest disappearance. how will 2020 census data be used? where there are more people, there are more needs for public services. that's why the census is used by the government to inform funding decisions each year. but that's not all.

a frightening scene in southwest china. 21 cars swallowed up by that massive sinkhole in front of a mall. amazingly, no one was hurt. the hole was more than 5,300 square feet. no word on the cause but the region has been hit with heavy rain all month. >> just incredible. and a search is under way in texas after another ft. hood soldier went missing. army officials say 23-year-old sergeant elder fernandes was last seen on monday when his staff sergeant dropped him off at his home in the nearby city of killeen. fernandes is a nuclear specialist. his worried family says it is unlike him not to call. >> this is very, very unusual. he has been in touch with us since last week. i personally spoke with him friday morning. he spoke with his mom this past sunday, and he promised that he would call monday. >> two other ft. hood soldiers were found dead in the past year. 20-year-old vanessa guillen

vanished in april, and a fellow soldier suspected of killing her took his life and gregory morales found ten months after he disappeared. sentencing day appeared for lori loughlin. they find out their sentence for their part in that college admissions scandal. plea deals call for loughlin to receive two months in prison. her husband, mossimo giannulli, five months, both admitted to buying their daughters' way into usc. federal prosecutors say they plan to ask the supreme court to reinstate the death sentence for the boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. an appeals court overturned that saying the trial judge did a less an satisfactory job for scre screening jurors for potential bias. mattel has a tribute for the pandemic's frontline workers, its american girl line created five dolls based on real people

killed osama bin laden now caught in a face mask fight. delta has banned robert o'neill after he tweeted a maskless selfie while sitting in his seat. the image included the caption, i'm not an expletive. o'neill, an outspoken trump supporter and fox news contributor, says he fired the shot that killed bin laden. >> you hit him? >> i actually hit him three times because i shot him twice while standing and once on the ground. >> reporter: delta says that every customer is required to wear a mask and failure to comply can result in losing the ability to fly delta in the future. o'neill responding last night tweeting, thank god it wasn't delta flying us in when we killed bin laden. we weren't wearing masks. in the meantime, a new york mother is speaking out after jetblue forced her and her six children off a plane when her 2-year-old daughter refused to wear a mask. >> she's 2 years old. she's 2 years old. it's on your website. >> i was very shaken. my kids started crying. they didn't know what was going on.

>> reporter: chaya bruck says everyone in her group was wearing the mandatory masks except her young daughter. >> she never wore a mask this few months. she has never worn a mask. i would never make her wear a mask. she is a baby. >> reporter: jetblue apologized to the family but the company is standing by its policy which says travelers 2 years and older must wear a face covering. dr. anthony fauci is recovering at home after an outpatient procedure to remove a polyp from his vocal cord. fauci is not likely to give coronavirus updates on tv any time soon, but a spokesperson says the 79-year-old is expected to be working online today and back in the office monday. in the nfl, washington head coach ron rivera has revealed he has cancer. the disease is in one of his lymph nodes. rivera says the cancer is in its early stains and told his players saying he plans to continue coaching. rivera's brother died from pancreatic cancer in 2015. staying in the nfl some fans in kansas city may have to change their game day wardrobe. the chiefs will no longer allow spectators to wear native

we may be able to help. . breaking news of course the wildfires byrni burning across y area now taking a deadly turn, at least five people have lost their lives, four of them in the lnu lightning complex fires in the north bay, that includes three victims in napa county, one person in solano county. electricity has been cut in parts of healdsburg as flames burn dangerously close. and these areas are under a mandatory evacuation. sonoma county saying you need to leave. and in the santa cruz mountains, there are now 40,000 acres as flames continue their relentless path of destruction into mountain communities. evacuation orders are in effect through the san lorenzo valley

and dounts and down to the santa cruz city limits. of course we'll have more on the wildfires, but first we want to check in with lisa argen with a look at the day ahead. >> good morning. this morning you had your heavy coat on and good reason, the low clouds and fog are back, certainly here in the city. increasing our humidity and allowing for some cooler temperatures at least to start out right now. 59 in the city, 57 in novato, 56 in santa rosa. 62 in fremont. current air quality is poor in liver are more, we see the red there. moderate in san jose and san francisco. and the best air quality right now is up in the north bay, but that will be changing with some wind shifting throughout the day today as we see our seabreeze kicking up. air quality then with the spare the air alert today for the inland east bay, the poor air quality in the santiago xlar say

and sunday. and we'll see the smoke plumes shifting more toward the south and east as the wind flow is out of the northwest. so looking at 2:00 in the 80s and 90s. so certainly a warm day inland, but we are looking at the fog clearing and we'll talk about the fires in particular. evacuation orders have expanded in santa cruz county. look at this video, this is from the boulder creek area. it shows firefighters on the front lines battling these flames trying desperately to save homes near the boulder creek golf course. the czu complex fire has torched close to 50,000 stretch from santa cruz into san mateo. and santa cruz beach boardwalk is closed until at least sunday.

and julian glover is live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, let's talk about the evacuations coming down in scotts valley, they got the alert last night saying leave now. and uc sants druze got t krchlc last night telling them that the students and faculty would have to leave the campus immediately. this is video of some of the destruction happening. again, boulder creek, you can see several homes still actively burning and cars completely charred there. and where e want to zoom back i scotts valley. people here had to leave very quickly. one man was forced to evacuate, he said that he's never seen it like this before. >> never seen anything in scotts valley like this before. this is a rare one of a kind
