complex fire has claimed four civilian lives, three in napa county and a fifth person who was a pg&e worker also died in that fire. the complex has burned 215,000 acres. and that is the one that we're watching so closely this morning because it is threatening the community of healdsburg. >> so we're on top of a lot this morning. it is friday, august 21. happy that you are waking up with us. before we get to all those details though, let's check in with lisa for a look at our forecast. >> the marine layer is black creating some visibility problems along the coast and also increasing relative humidity and moisture in the atmosphere. this is looking at mt. tam. half moon bay is in the 50s. and from the east bay camera, you will be able to see all that
6:01 am
dirty air when the sun comes up. 55 santa rosa, 52 by the delta. and we are looking at relative humidity anywhere from 89% to 100%. so right now the air quality is worse in the east bay, but a little better in san jose and redwood city where you have you the fog. so temperatures will steadily climb through the 70s and 80s around the bay topping off into the 90s today inland. we're talking about still temperatures above average, but not as hot as we had been since the heat wave last week. now we'll start in the north bay and that is because the major focus of the lnu complex fire is happening with the walbridge fire. that is getting dangerously close to the town of healdsburg. residents are being washed they shou -- warned they should be prepared to leave. amy hollyfield is live. >> reporter: and we're on mill

creek road which is evacuated. but they left behind a sign letting them know that there is water at their home if they need it. and now check out this video sho shot overnight, this is a home on fire on warm has creek road. the walbridge fire is now the highest priority in the region. that means that they were able to send more resources here. so residents yesterday saw more air support, dropping water on this fire. they say they are doing what they can to keep it from populated areas. it has burned 20,000 acres and an unknown number of homes in rus rural areas. >> this is my backyard, this is a fire that we've been worrying about for decades around here because it hasn't burned in so long and it just breaks my heart. the people out here have been so vigilant about prepping their
6:03 am
homes and vegetation management. and they did the best they could. at least everybody got out. >> reporter: about 30,000 residents have been evacuated from sonoma county or are under evacuation orders. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. now let's get to the update on the czu lightning complex fires. >> we're still at 0% containment. we still have 50 structures that we can confirm have been destroyed, that number will go up. we do anticipate that to get into the triple digits as we go out and verify what has been destroyed. and we also have about 64,600 people who have been evacuated.
6:04 am
and we have over 1,000 personnel at scene. with that, i'll pass it over to our operations section chief cal fire incident management team 3. >> good morning. overnight we experienced again more significant fire behavior throughout the fire. we did see a bit of a marine influence of some moisture air that came into the incident earlier in the evening, although it was short lived. and when it receded back, fire conditions increased significantly. it is helping more on the western edge of the fire, but the eastern edge, it is not providing us the relief that we would traditionally see with and on set of marine layer in the area. with that, we did experience again more active fire on the
6:05 am
east part of the fire. it did impact boulder to ben lomond. and further south. sorry to say there was more structure loss. again, lack of resources, we're co doing the best we can. and there were a number of fantastic saves by our first responders not only the firefighters but our law enforcement assisting us in doing our job and being successful in that endeavor. one thing that continues to hachl p hamper us, evacuations are in place for good reasons. but with that, when people that do stay behind and do try to take matters in to their object hands, it creates a bigger issue for our first responders. those that stay, and we had three separate rescues last night, it pulls our few
6:06 am
resources away to have to rescue those individuals because they put themselves in peril. i know they are trying to do the right thing for their the property, but in the long run it creates a bigger problem for the first responders. because of that, it took our firefighters away from the firefight to rescue them and put our first responders in danger to rescue them out of that situation. so we ask if you have not evacuated, please evacuate. do not put yourself or our first responders in that situation. thank you. >> speaking next is chief deputy clark. >> good morning. i want to touch on kind of what we did last night in terms of our progress and then a couple other things for people that are dids operati displaced right now with regards to a time frame. so first, starting with last
6:07 am
night, we continued through the evacuation city of scotts valley. i mentioned yesterday that the population in that area, about 12,000 people, so nearly done with that this morning. and again, that is everything west of highway 17. so nearly done with that. we used about 76 people to do that last night. once we get done with that, for us it is transitioning to a certain extend to where all of our folks will be dedicated to security so long as the fire doesn't change and we have to somehow move into a different area for any potential evacuations. so later today, as soon as the evacuations are complete here in scotts valley, we'll move basically 93 officers and deputies will be spread out throughout the valley to do roving patrols and that sort of thing to make sure people's
6:08 am
homes are safe and we're keeping an eye on anyone who decides that they want to come up here for the wrong reasons. so there is no reason to come back into an evacuated area. again, cal fire is doing the absolute best they can to stop this fire and so by coming back into afternoon evacuation zone like you heard, it draws them away from their job be and also draws us away from potentially looking for people and evacuating people that we need to. last night we did get a couple calls with regards to suspicious vehicles, but people are up there looking for those folks or anyone else that might be driving around potentially burglarizing a home. i want to bring up the time frames. i can imagine if you are displaced, you might be wondering how long am i away from my home. and i don't want to give any false hope because it is a dynamic situation. this fire is not contained.
6:09 am
so what would i tell my loved one? it could be potentially week depending on what this fire does. so if people are wondering how soon could i get back, it could be potentially weeks. that is all dependent on the fire. and i want to touch on animals. maybe somebody wants to come back this because maybe they forgot a pet. i want to give you an mal control's phone number. we can potentially assist animal patrol in going up and doing sort of a rescue on a pet. that number is 831-471-1182. so that is with regards to animals. thank you. >> next the san mateo county
6:10 am
sheriff's office. >> good morning. overnight we had law enforcement officers from multiple agencies going door to door making announcements of the evacuation. thank you to the mutual aid partners who assisted with that. evacuation zones is every town west of 35 all the way up to highway 1. we did see a lot of cars leaving last night and we appreciate those people who did that. we want to make sure that we have personnel to direct the resources appropriately. unfortunately, we're still seeing cars coming in and we're asking everyone to avoid coming in so we can leave the routes open for people trying to get out. as well as the first responders. half moon bay high school evacuation point is now full. so we're asking everyone especially with rvs or large animal to say go to the san mateo event center.
6:11 am
and we also vl sphave spot the fires on both sides of highway 1. we also want to let everybody know that our hearts are with everybody who is impacted by this. we understand what you are going through. these are our neighbors, our friends, our families. and we're with you on this mission and we're doing everything that we can to protect our dear communities. thank you. >> next up is one of the woone command commanders, ic billy cee. >> good morning. last night obviously we reported out 48,000 acres. this morning 50,000 acres. 64,000 plus residents have been evacuated. obviously last night i talked about this fire growing 700 acres to 1,000 acres overnight.
6:12 am
the humidity tempered the fire a bit, but don't let that lull you into a sense that something is changing on this incident. once that marine layer pulled out, there was free burning activity out there again and burned in several different directions and hampered our control efforts and evacuation efforts and rescue efforts of all our personnel on line. so again today all those personnel will be actively engaged out on that line. we've increased our personnel by almost 100 since last night which is good. but still not enough. we'll continue to bring additional resources in here, continue to engage in this firefight. we'll take the little wins and add it up into a big win. thank you. >> and the final speaker for the san mateo/santa cruz area is ian
6:13 am
larkin. >> this is a very dynamic situation that we're dealing with here. i reiterated last night this is an historic event. we have fires burning in areas that may have never burned at all. so as we try to get resources in to contain the fire, we just need to make sure those that are evacuated heed those evacuation notices, leave the area if you haven't. we're taking our vital resources that are limited and having to xhilts tho commit those to those rescuing those who stayed. we have firefighters out there trying to do perimeter control that are being taken away from that effort in order to affect those rescues and make sure everyone is safe. so i can't stress it enough that everybody needs to leave the area and stay out of the area and let us get in there and do our jobs.
6:14 am
we're doing everything that we can, we have committed every available resource that is available to us from our local fire agencies and our cal fire agency as well. we have basically put everything we have on the front line in order to try to contain this fire. and as resources come in, we'll be assigning those as the team sees fit to those areas that have the greatest impact and need. so please leave the area, heed the evacuations notice. if you are anywhere in the area or in front of the fire that has not received an evacuation notice take this as an up front note, prepare yourself, be ready so in the event that we do have to evacuate you, you are ready to go. thank you. >> and with that i'm happy to answer any questions about the incident. >> how do you decide which structure to defend and which ones to -- so one thing that we've
6:15 am
learned from this update is that this fire is continuing to grow. last night they told us 40,000 acres and this morning it is up to 50,000 acres. and still 0% contained. 50 structures have been destroyed, they expect that number on go up to triple digits. 64,000 people, more than, have been evacuated. they have 1,000 plus fire personnel working on this fire. they told us the marine layer tempered the fire a little bit, but don't let that make you think that things are changing, this is stuff a tough fire for them to fight. they said one of the biggest things hampering them right now is people staying behind in their homes trying to take matters in to their own hands. and they say that creates a much bigger issue for them. they said they had three separate rescues that they had to perform and that took away resources from first responders and it put them in danger. so they are asking if you have
6:16 am
been asking to evacuate, please evacuate, you have no reason to come back. if you haven't been asked to evacuate and you are in that area, be prepared to evacuate if asked to do so. another thing they talked about, they are planning to transition to security as long as the fire doesn't change change. so as soon as that is completed, they will spread out do patrols to make sure people's homes are safe. people are asking when they might be able to go back. unfortunately, they say it could be waking depends on what that fire does. so of course we'll give you more information as soon as we get it. but that is the update from officials

good friday morning to you. waking up to some welcome low clouds and fog, but unfortunately it is just locally here in san francisco. a little bit down the san mateo coast and eastward to perhaps fremont. here is a live look and visibility is reduced, but you can see the poor air quality from mt. tam. and it shifted from good air quality yesterday to very poor at the night. and you can see all that smoke trapped at the surface. it is 63 in san jose, 59 in francisco. the smoke layer at about 25,000 feet.
6:20 am
marine layer at the coast. and you can see the winds out of the north in the north bay, so that is why we're looking at some of the temperatures a little warmer this morning, anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees warmer in the north bay. and spare the area alert not only today but right through the weekend. by monday, air quality should be getting just a little bit better. in the east bay, winds are calm. temperatures in the upper 50s. 83% relative humidity. at the surface south winds, 69% relative humidity. and we'll be getting into lighter winds throughout the day which is good news. but here is what we're looking at over the weekend. we have another tropical storm genevieve that could bring up moisture sunday into monday. so certainly something to keep an eye on. 87 san jose. 94 in livermore. and 7 day forecast, hazy and
6:21 am
warm over the weekend with higher humidity into sunday, maybe that rain sunday into monday. and then still looking warm right into next week. jobina, good morning. and we've continued to see major road closures expand so i want to explain what you are looking at. everything that you see in purple is shut down in both directions. there are a lot of details here. this includes highway 1, also 35, 84 and state route 9. so if this loved o loved one, just look at this map and i've also tweeted it out. as we move up to the north bay, the biggest closure there is 128 between silverado trail and
6:24 am
good morning. we do have low clouds and fog in parts of the bay area, the marine layer is around the golden gate bridge. here is the exploratorium camera. you can tell that it is compressed right at the surface, 59 downtown. more low clouds and fog at sfo with 55 in santa rosa. 65 in concord. so our relative humidity up where we like it, 70%, 80%, 90%. but the air quality will get worse throughout the day, so we're 340d rat to good in spot, unhealthy in the east bay. and as fires continue to grow and temperatures increase, we'll be looking at hazy smoky skies.
6:25 am
and we're getting a new look at the drought situation. this is the latest drought map. the new one is on the left. compared to last week, the drought is now worse in southern california. but look at this comparison to last year when 93% of the state was drought-free. the woodward fire in the point reyes national seashore means that residents have been given evacuation warnings. however, if the winds pick up, a mandatory order is possible. and that includes an 11 mile stretch. so far it has burned 2,000 acres along the marin coast and fire officials say the resources are stretched thin but they are still holding the line along the north and south sides. this fire has 0% containment. new development, steve bannon is out on bail after

pleading not guilty to fraud charges. he and three others are accused of defrauding hundreds of thousands of people by personally profiting off a scheme to raise money to help build a border wall. bannon and the others raised 25 million with a group called "we build the wall." his indictment makes him the sixth person tied to the 2016 campaign to face federal charges. happening today, postmaster general before the senate he will be questioned about changes being made as millions will be relying on mail-in ballots for the november election. dejoy is also scheduled to testify remotely in front of a house committee monday. the number of people dying from coronavirus should start to drop across the u.s. by next week. this is according to the chief doctor of the cdc. dr. redfield says that
6:27 am
mitigation measures like controlling crowds, wearing masks and shutting down bars are working to curb the spread of the virus. the daily average of new cases in the u.s. has been on the decline for weeks. so far more than 5.5 million americans have been infected and at least 174,000 have died from the virus. new at 6:00, parents will now have an easier time getting vaccinations for their kids. licensed pharmacists in all 50 states are thousand allnow allo to give vaccines over the age of three. they made this decision after the cdc reported childhood vaccines fell sharply at the peak of the pandemic in early spring. however, the academy of american pediatrics call it incredibly misguided. coming up next, the wildfire disaster across the bay area, communities told to prepare to

. this is an historic event. we have fire burning in areas that may never have burned at all. the wildfire shows no signs of slowing down. you are looking at new video of a home burning in boulder creek this morning. the update we just got from santa cruz county officials. and another hot spot that we are monitoring right now is in the north bay. governor newsom expected to be there later this morning to address the wildfire emergency. and of course we're concerned about the air quality and you can see what it looks like from our sutro camera this morning as the sun is coming up. >> good morning, it is friday, august 21. we want to start with a check of our weather.
6:31 am
lisa is in for mike letting us know what we can expect today. >> good morning. low clouds and fog greeting us at the golden gate bridge and in san francisco reducing visibility. but from mt. tam, you can see all the smoke trapped at the surface. the marine layer is at about 600, 7 above it, smoky conditions. 63 in san jose. and from the east bay camera, certainly not great visibility. 62 by the delta. and checking in in livermore, unhealthy air where san jose is just a little bit better. as we get the seabreeze, the gusty winds today. temperatures climbing through the 80s around the bay, 90s inland. spare the air alert and we'll keep that with us right through
6:32 am
sunday. evacuation orders have expanded in santa cruz county. this video is from the boulder creek area. and it will explain why. firefighters on the front lines are battling these flames trying to save homes near the golf course. and we've learned that the czu lightning complex fires have burned 50,000 acres. they stretch from santa cruz into san mateo counties. the boardwalk is closed at least until sunday. and julian glover is live in santa cruz county with the new updates. >> reporter: and believe it or not, the fire is only 50,000 acres is a bit of good news. only growing 2,000 acres overnight. we heard there one the incident commanders with cal fire saying the relative humidity and also
6:33 am
moisture in the air kept the fire from spreading as rapidly as we had seen it spread in the recent days. video from overnight shows the flames engulfing homes. triggering even more evacuations. we got word that we did not want to hear out of the press conference, that people have been staying behind in the evacuated areas only putting firefighters in even greater danger, pulling them from the firefight at they have to go in and rescue these people. listen in. >> those that stay and we had three separate rescues last night that pulled our vital resources away to have to rescue those individuals because they put themselves in peril. i know they are trying to do the right thing for their property, but in the long run it has created a bigger problem for the
6:34 am
first responders. >> reporter: and that is what we can't want to hear, pulling resources from the active firefight to try to save people when they should already be out of there. we're hearing about 1,000 personnel are currently fighting the czu complex fire here. we're hearing that conditions have improved a little bit, but not quite enough so that they would be able to do as much fighting from the air as they would like. we'll see what the day brings us though. evacuation orders still in place for uc santa cruz forced to leave yesterday evening. julian glover, abc 7 news. now we'll take you to the north bay, one of the major hot
6:35 am
spots is the walbridge fire. and amy hollyfield is live for us near healdsburg this morning. >> reporter: look at this sign left behind for firefighters, telling them that they can find water here at these homes. we have video from overnight. this house was on fire and this is west of healdsburg and this is around 2:00 this morning. i just checked in with cal fire and they tell me fire was very active in the wallace creek and hill creek area overnight. this fire has burned several houses in rural areas. they don't know how many, but they are doing what they can to keep it from reaching populated areas like healdsburg. as businesses watch and wait. >> we're scared as hell. this is unprecedented times for
6:36 am
us. we've been this business downtown now for almost 16 years. and the last three have been horrific. we're trying to figure out how to run a business here. >> reporter: and here is video we shot this morning of a spot fire, we've noticed several of them dotting the hillsides this morning. and that was the comments a cal firefighter first said to me, he said oh, yeah, a lot of spot fires. the walbridge fire is the highest priority in the region, so that means that it gets more resources. so residents here now seeing more air support dropping water. and 30,000 residents of sonoma county have been ordered to evacuate or have a warning in place. meaning if you haven't left yet, make sure that you are ready to it go in a moment's notice. >> there has been another death in the fire zone north of
6:37 am
vacaville. the solano county sheriff's office says a man was found while crews were as he is is being fire damage on pleasants valley road. yesterday abc 7 news was along that street and you can see the devastation there. a pg&e employee also died in the fire zone this week. and three people were killed in napa county. the bodies were found inside a burned home on highway 128. that is just south of lake berryessa. their victims have not been released. restaurants struggling from the pandemic are facing another challenge from the wildfire smoke. this italian restaurant had roughly 80 cancellations from outdoor diners. and at boneheads barbecue texas, they usually have 15 to 30 tables rotating on their patio,
6:38 am
last night only one. >> just not enough that we can miss anything really. to have another hit like this is tremendous. >> but we will be fine. we just have to go through the hard times. things will come back. >> restaurant owners say they are grateful to both people that have been ordering to go and also people who stay and eat despite the less than ideal conditions. the covid-19 testing site at the alameda fair grounds is closed because of poor air quality from the fires. organizers will continue to monitor the quality to determine when they can reopen. and the free testing site in hayward will remain closed until further notice because of the air quality. the sky west golf course is testing anyone age 12 and over without

you can get the fire tracker at abc7news.com and the abc 7 news app. and this is the night joe biden has been waiting for as he accepts the democratic nomination for president. coming up next, the challenge he is issuing to president trump. and you are looking live at the big board, just slightly in negative territory. another update on how the markets are doing coming up. plus how to help wildfire evacuees through airbnb. the new program starting today. hi friends. i know this is very rare, but it feels good to see you all because this is a lot going on this morning. but i'm happy to see you all. >> i am too. it does smell like a campfire in here, but that is the least of the problems compared to what so
6:40 am
many others are dealing with. so thinking of everyone this morning. and good morning, everyone. i do want to bring in our maps because we've continued to watch the closures in san mateo and santa cruz counties really expand. so this looks like a lot of information on the blue boxes on your screen here. what i really want you to understand is that everything in purple is completely shut down in both directions. so that includes highway 1, 35, 84 as well as state route 9. they are all in the evacuation zones. in the north bay, largest closure is still 128. so eastbound and westbound 128 between silverado trail and monticello road. and this extends all the way to vacaville. and i want to bring in a live shot showing you the golden gate bridge because in addition to smoke, we're also seeing fog this morning. the chp has issued a fog
6:41 am
advisory for the golden gate bridge and also a heavy smoke advisory for the antioch bridge. and i want to bring in lisa argen, i know you've been watching all of this as well. and that low visibility especially in the north bay. >> yes, you're right. but you know, where the fog is low, that is where we're looking at the highest relative humidity, the poor air quality in the east bay where the fog has not reached yet and the smoke in the upper levels of the atmosphere. so what is changing today are the cooler temperatures to start out for most of us, higher relative humidity. and what is the same at gusty winds throughout the afternoon with the return of that seabreeze and the surge of cooler marine air coming back into play. here is a look at a gray central coast. so a lot of fog along the central coast. 63 in san jose where you have the haze and this morning air quality for most of you is just a little bit better.
6:42 am
62 in fairfield. and looking at the current air quality shows that we're looking at the unhealthiest levels in condition cord, but wi concord. look at redwood city, but these numbers will change. the pollutants will continue to tick up. and north way, temperatures in the 60s, relative humidity 80%. the winds are calm, but look what happens throughout the afternoon. the winds will spike to the northwest by about 5:00 and then we'll have a warm several days where numbers will be in the mid-90s and the summer heat continuing. here is the second half of the weekend where tropical storm genevieve, remnants of it, may interact with a system that could bring us some showers or are a thunderstorm. we're looking at 70s today in the city and 90s in livermore. now here is a look at more high temperatures where you live brought to you by the one and only ivan, streaming now only on
6:43 am
6:45 am
6:46 am
so a look at the hazy skies and unhealthiest air in the east bay today. but by saturday and sunday, we're still under a spare the air alert for poor air quality. monday looks like conditions could get a little better. numbers in the low 90s today in the east bay valleys and some other warmer temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s in the south bay. jobina, good morning. >> i'll take it from here. thank you. these fires are burning across the entire bay area this morning. we want to show you this map so you can get a sense of how widespread the emergency is. there are widespread evacuations. lnu in the north bay has caused the most destruction. the fires have burned 215,000 acres with 0% containment. cal fire says that winds are a
6:47 am
big threat as we head into the weekend. in the south bay, the scu fire is the biggest fire by size at over 157,000 acres. this fire, the only one with any containment at 5%, and evacuation orders are till stile for both. airbnb is launching its open homes program in sonoma county to help wildfire the program is not new, airbnb started it back in 012. it connects people who have been impacted people a free place to stay. happening today governor newsom you will be in the north bay this morning to give an update on the response to the wildfires. that starts at 11:00. you can watch it right here on bs abc 7, abc7news.com or our app.
6:48 am
it is now official, joe biden has accepted the democratic nomination for president of the united states. >> this is life-changing election. this will determine what america will look like for a long time. >> biden laid out a detailed plan to address the covid-19 pandemic while also blasting president trump's handling of the crisis. >> our current president's failed in his most 3w5ibasic du he has failed to protect us. he has failed to protect america. and my fellow americans, that is unforgivable. >> republicans hold their convention next week. president trump plans to deliver his acceptance speech from the white house. and abc news landed a joint interview with joe biden and kamala harris. you can watch it sunday at 8:00 p.m. right here on abc 7. the candidates will sit down with david muir and robin roberts to talk about their

history-making presidential ticket. now to your morning money report. uber and lyft have been given more time to appeal a california law requiring them to reclassify p drivers to employees. they have been given a stay so that they can agree on an appeal process. the new deadline tuesday and another court hearing set for october 22. uber and lyft want california the voters to decide on this issue in november. and right now we're taking a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets under way this morning. you can see we're up about 60 points. and look at this, dome dining is back in san francisco, but this time there have been some modifications. these were set up near 5th and mission streets. but health officials ordered that the domes be removed because they didn't have the
6:50 am
proper ventilation. now they have fixed the issue so if you want to go dine in the dome, you can go and do it. but you will be paying $200 a person. >> there's that. as people deal with both smoky air and the pandemic, many have questions about their face coverings. will that protect you from the bad air? inhale i inhaling wildfire smoke can cause lung irritation and shortness the breath. a properly fitted n95 mask can help, but of course they are in short supply because of the pandemic. what about the other face coverings we're using, do they work? maybe not. >> certainly air that you are breathing can come from around the mask of and then not really get filtered appropriately. and that is one of the big differences between an n95 or p 100 respirator and a surgical mask or one of these cloth
6:51 am
