the lmu complex burning in the north bay is now the second largest wildfire in california history burning more than 300,000 acres. this comes after a new concern for evacuees now, looting and more dangerous weather on it way as well. another round of thunderstorms and dry lightening is possible late this weekend which could spark new wildfires. good morning everyone. it's saturday, august 22nd. a o the fires continuing to burn across the bay area this morning. let's take a look at the weather and how it's impacting the fire

fight. >> our marine layer is getting more and more diffuse. yesterday it was setup right below the golden gate bridge. and this morning as the high pressure ridge to the south of us builds back into the bay area we're seeing less of a marine influence. we still have the haze, the smoke. 2 miles half moon bay, that's with the fog. and as we look at the air quality we can see it's not good for sensitive groups in the south bay, also around livermore and into oakland as well as walnut creek. but moderate air quality up in the north bay. so up towards santa rosa. it's better right now but you know how those winds shift and move that smoke around throughout the day. we can expect that oakland, san francisco 56 on the coast, and by 9:00 we've got 60s. the fog is at the shoreline, but by the afternoon we're warming up into the ening dttays offsho

structures destroyed by the flaems. between santa cruz and san mateo counties cal fire officials are asking residents heed evacuation orders and stay away. >> it's difficult to maneuver around this fire with the narrow roads and to add the public back in there is very difficult and unsafe for our firefighters. >> reporter: in addition to those responding to the fire 60 law enforcement personnel have been sent out to search for potential looters and protect property. >> today alone we arrested five people. five people with two car loads of stolen property off of fall creek road. >> reporter: the sheriff's office say these five decided to victimize several of our community members who are already hurting. another concern friday, two residents are unaccounted for. sheriffs detectives are investigating. >> there are two missing persons cases at trying to confirm. >> reporter: as for the ongoing fire fight cal fire says more evacuations and road closures can be expectynobc 7 news

other large animals because of the fire. owners are asked to make sure their animals have identification tags on them with your phone number. and they're asking for donations for wheelbarrows, bales and water. the lnu complex, one of the largest fires in state history has been given extra resources. the massive and still largely uncontrolled wildfire has killed at least five people, destroyed nearly 500 structures and burned nearly 300,000 acres with nearl 15% containment. >> reporter: air resources burning west of healdsburg were almost nonstop. the lnu lightening complex stretches over five counties. cal fire was told this the state's priority which allowed them to deploy resource tuesday the walbridge fire which is part

of the complex. >> we have a plan we started yesterday getting more resources over there. we added approximately 500 people in 24 hours. >> reporter: the fire fight increased on the dry creek valley side, but officials say there was a whole lot less smoke in the air and a lot less radio traffic about extreme fire behavior. >> i saw first-hand the bulldozer lines and the back hands they created. >> reporter: he saw the relentless efforts of firefighters. >> 90 hours on straight. they're sleeping on top of their vehicles. they're doing so much right now, but it's working. it's effective. >> reporter: fire officials say even though the rate of spread was significantly less than it was thursday, their many concern coitions. 7news. >> and in marin county all of the national seashore is closed until further notice because of the woodward wildfire.

right now firefighters say the fire is 5% contained. this video here showing aircraft fighting the flames. more than 2,200 acres have woodrd fire tuesday. and take a look at this video. these are palo alto firefighters trying everything to save homes from burning. they say they were able to save 20 in this residential area, but as you can see nothing but charred ground in other spots. and just listen to that windwee fire burning in areas in monterey county is now more than 40,000 acres, 12% contained. and now to the complex. here's a map of where that fire

is burning. it is 10% contained, and this f santa clara county. evacuation orders are in place there, and in parts of alameda county from this complex. at least five structures have been destroyed and more than 20,000 homes are still threatened. >> once you come down the hill about three quarers of the way it was 100 foot flames straight down the hill. sbnders have been hurt. at least two san francisco hotels are offering special rates for evacuees. and hanlery otell has been closed since the shelter in place order but has reopened for anyone who's been evacuated, lost their home or affected by poor air quality and needs to stay. rates are $75 a night and they uire p of a room on san

let's take a look now at the latest covid-19 headlines here in the bay area. now more than 78,000 people have been infected and more than 1,000 have died of the virus since it first took hold. wildfire battling in napa county is no longer on the states watch list, the first bay area county to come off. so good news for a county going through a lot right now. indoor businesses can now reopen with certain safety measures, and local schools can start in-person learning in two weeks. san francisco supposedly is supposed to come off the list, but not quite yet. so we'll wait to see when that happens. the city will now be renting out outdoor spaces to struggling gyms and fitness studios. and starting friday in alameda county outdoor hair salons, wineries and other businesses can reopen. now, a south bay school district is fir inouivie a wve

enor in-pers p the mercury news reports that the moorland school district in san jose plans to bring small groups of students back to campus as soon as next week. it wants to bring back 168 elementary school students but it will be from famfullies who feel their kids really need to be there. students will be broken up into on each campus, and they'll continue learning from teachers and other staff members. social distancing and mask requirements, of course, will be in place. and there are concerns that smoke from the fires will make things worse for people fighting covid-19. sonoma county's health officer says there's also a concern for asymptomatic carriers. >> a copd exacerbation, certainly if they're asymptomatic with covid you would think they're more likely

picture you can see some of the high clouds moving up from the south to the central coast, and this is what we're going to be watching close for sunday. i very much like what we saw a week ago as the triggering mechanisms, the remnants of what was hurricane genevieve continues up the south. that could trigger not only the thunderstorms but the gusty winds that could spread those fires, start more fires. the fire weather watch starts 4:00 tomorrow morning. there's a slight chance early sunday, a better chance late sunday into monday and then again monday into tuesday. styinds anywhere from hour.ando. 69 in concord, looking at 58 in the city and a bit of fog there in pacifica. our exploratorium camera looking

at some smoke and haze through the weekend. mild with a bit of fog at the coast but hot inland the next two days. and the mid-90s inland and turning more humid with the chance of that dry lightening better likely sunday night into monday and then again into tuesday. so as we look at air quality it is unhealthy. our inland east bay tomorrow and looking at unhealthy levels throughout the day in the south bay. fires up here in the north bay with light winds, relative%. looking at ckaville, the calm wind 69 degrees, and it's 71, 53% relative humidity. so the high clouds today, more likely, though, into sunday. this is as we get into sunday and then we'll be watching that possibility for perhaps those gusty winds, dry lightening. and if we see any thunderstorms they won't be containing any moisture. it'll just be the dry variety, which it does not bode well for

temperatures in the 50s, san francisco. 62 in oakland. mountain view, 62. from our eas camera a smoke there. 61 in napa, 69 in concord, and from our east bay very poor air quality here. looking at the smoke and haze through the weekend. we'll have a little bit of fog at the coast but very warm the next few days inland, and then the humidity increases and the chances of dry lightening, a first chance comes into play early sunday taking us through tuesday. take a look at the levels in the atmosphere showing the pollutants from concord to pleasanton, and better air quality we'll just call it moderate because it's not that much better even in the north bay or stran. this is the trend for the next seven days up in the north bay. maybe a little cooler on sunday.

temperatures dipping on tuesday but coming right back up by the end of the week. temperatures in the mid-80s today, 90s in the peninsula. winds coming out of the west-southwest. 78 in san mateo, 82 in palo alto. we'll look for better visibility in san francisco where we'll look for worse visibility in the north bay at times as that smoke from the fires gets pushed from those west-southwesterly winds. look for 90 in novato. hazy conditions near east bay. mid-70s in oakland. look for 81 in san leandro. and you head inland and it's going to be hot again with numbers in the mid-90s, pittsburgh, hazy conditions in livermore at 95. the spare alert today for the hazy and smoky conditions, the possible thunderstorms beginning perhaps early tomorrow and then a better chance sunday night into monday, and another chance into early tuesday.

the lnu complex burning in the north bay is now the second largest wildfire in california history burning more than 300,000 acres. this comes after a new concern for evacuees now, looting and more dangerous weather on the way. another round of thunderstorms and dry lightening is on the way late this weekend which could spark new wildfires. thanks for joining us. i'm liz
