around. i'll let you know if there is hope for improvement in the days ahead. abc7 news at 11:00 startsg a ppin in the state of california. >> three of the largest wildfires to ravage our state raging in the bay area still. the scu lightning complex in the east bay just overtook the lmu lightning complex as the second largest in state history. >> but tonight there is cautious optimism as crews try to take advantage of better weather conditions. at least eight people have died and more than 1.4 million acres have burned. and we've learned there are four burn patients being treated at u.c. davis medical center. >> and we want you to take a look at these pictures. santa cruz sheriff's deputies need your help catching a man suspected of stealing a firefighter's wallet while he was battling the flames. >> here's a look at the largest wildfires burning in the bay area right now. lightning sparked them a week

ago, and they torched an area greater than the size of rhode island. in the north bay, the lmu lightning complex is proveding to be challenging for firefighters tonight. sky 7 was overhead the wall bridge fire near water springs road in sonoma county this afternoon. you can see the difficult terrain crews are facing. >> so far the lnu lightning complex, containment is rising and currently at 25%. so it's a bitten couraging here tonight. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone is following the story and joins us live from healdsburg tonight. >> j.r., what does it look like tonight? >> reporter: dan and ama -- ama it is much more humid than it had been. winds have died down in this location. those firefighters out there tell me that is helping with the fire fight. still, though, you can see directly behind me the c.h.p. officer still has this area closed off. we are only around one or two miles from heavy smoke and a fire.

flames shooting into the air monday evening in the hills northwest of healdsburg near dry creek road. >> it's been insane with all the wind and all the smoke just coming in. >> reporter: neighbors mere the mandatory evacuation zone are keeping a close eye on the changing situation, and hoping that these flames die down. as we traveled along shamise road, you can see numerous smoke stacks. look closer and you'll see the fire. >> it ended up overtaking our ranch on thursday. >> reporter: jake is part of a small group of neighbors who has been fighting the flames since the lightning strikes last week before cal fire arrived with more firefighters. these are the moments the fire overtook their ranch. but because of the prep work they did involving tree removal and clearing, they saved all their structures. some locations have not fared so well. on big ridge, fire tore through this home, leaving little to nothing. a fan and a couple of outdoor

chairs are about all that's left. >> every time you can save a structure it's a win, you know. but sometimes it's just unfortunate. >> reporter: he says they aren't givingthough. while neighbors' home succumbed to the homes they helped save, not only their ranch, but several others nearby. something they will continue to do until these fires are out. >> i've lived out here 34 years and i'm a heavy equipment operator. and it's intimidating, but if we hadn't stood our ground, we would have had nothing. >> reporter: and back out here live this evening, you can see c.h.p. officers still have this area closed off, an area that has been closed off, and is closed off right now. also important to note that last night we were at mill creek road. drove by that section of area and roadway this evening. still a lot of smoke in that area as well. reporting live in healdsburg, j.r. stone, abc7 news.

>> j.r., thank you. in the north ba evacuation warning and the woodward fire was issued an hour ago for areas in alima. it comes hours after the first mandatory evacuation of homes in west marin. an evacuation center is set up at the marin county civic center. more than 200 personnel have been brought in to fight the fire which is 5% contained. the woodward fire has scorched 2700 acres west of alima north of the sea shore. >> the lightning complex is burning in santa cruz and san mateo countys. it's torched more than 78,000 acres and has destroyed 276 structures. we're seeing some of the first video from the bonnie dune area in the santa cruz mountains. it shows one home after another reduced to ashes on empire grade, sadly. only brick chimneys reign at most of these home sites. right now it's still 13% contained. cal fire says most of those

destroyed are in the santa cruz mountains. already amateur brigades are formed to fight the fires. teams of residents who refuse to let their neighborhoods burn down, at least without a fight. abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo is on that story. >> reporter: defending bonnie dune, that's the goal for this group. they call themselves rescue one. close friends and long-time santa cruz mountain residents who refuse to sit aside during the massive czu lightning complex fire fight. >> wes know the terrain. we know where to find the water. we know where to find resource ands a small group of manpower that can get a lot of work done. >> reporter: he says his crew is one of many that have organized similar efforts throughout the mountains. a network of neighbors packing water pumps, chainsaws, tanks and fire hoses working round the clock to save homes. >> there are no fire trucks. no one's help us. and we refuse to let people's houses burn to the ground. so we're going to use our local knowledge, who we are, our strength, and the resources we

do have to pull the water, get down there and put the darn thing out. >> reporter: but cal fire officials say doing so presents real danger. on monday in response to resident brigades, deputy chief jonathan cox said main concern is preventable injury and entrapment. >> by that we use air tankers with 20,000 gallons of retardant. we use fire as a tool to actually stop an oncoming fire. >> reporter: cox says for the sake of safety and success, those efforts must be coordinated and communicated by professionals. >> any sort of organization that may impede with fire fighting operation is not only potentially harmful for them, but it's potentially harmful for our firefighters as well. >> reporter: but with multiple raging fires and firefighters stretched then, he says it's a risk residents are willi to take. >> t putur own livesn the line at's all it is. >> reporter: he says rescue one has already saved 26 homes and counting. in the south bay, i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news.

>> new developments, a first look tonight at a man wanted for stealing the wallet of a cal fire firefighter. investigators say the thief used a stolen credit card at the shell gas station on safe way and 41st avenue in cap toll a. he is accused of taking the wallet over the weekend from a vehicle at the bonnie dune fire station while working the czu fire. he drained the bank account. relief for those once under evacuation orders in the scu lightning complex fire. it has been downgraded to a warning to people in parts of santa clara county. it is the second wildfire in state history. it's burned nor than 360,000 acres and is 15% contained. five people have been injured in the fire, 12 buildings destroyed. abc7 news was embedded with a crew as it entered the fire zone at henry coe state park. firefighters explain their plan of attack. >> we're burning out around houses to protect them. so we're going to protect them by burning out around and push

off away from them. so when it does come to it, there will be less to burn. >> two strike teams of 44 firefighters from texas are among crews fighting the flames. >> the hazy skies are providing for certainly dramatic sun sets across the bay area. nice to look at, but very tough to breathe in. take a look at what we saw from several of our tower cameras tonight. and look at the air quality right now. all the areas with red and purple dots show hazardous air conditions, i should say. >> tonight it isn't as bad as we've seen. the worst is along the peninsula. for the latest on the smoke and fire conditions, here's abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. >> yeah, ama and dan, we have certainly seen a change in this environment that you're looking at from our mount tam cam. you see the smoke and the fire from our time lapse, really bad in some parts of the bay area today. but as i take a look at the air quality index current levels are in the good to moderate category, and we haven't seen

this in days. live doppler 7 showing you live the fog is spilling in, the sea breeze pushing some of the bad air quality out of the picture. the complex humidity is up 69% near the guerneville fire. wall bridge fire, excuse me, and the winds are light which should help those firefighters. humidity is rising near the czu lightning complex. 87% and it is cooling which is great news for the crews on the fire lines. full look at the forecast is coming u. ama, dan? >> sandhya, thank you. from higher priced fruit to ash covered vegetables, the fires could produce serious produce problems. abc7 news kate larsson explains what you need to know before you head to the grocery store. >> we may have some helicopter noise in the background because we're only about a quarter mile from the fire. >> reporter: corey manning is the owner of trace alamos farm in healdsburg. tomatoes, melons, peppers, corn and pumpkins are covered in ash. >> a lot of the ash is mixed between trees, but also from

people's homes and you don't want to have any of those kinds of things on your fruit or vegetables. we rinse everything off well, but we don't have the labor for that. >> reporter: translated for your trip to the grocery store? >> there could be potentially damaged product. of course you want to wash it as best you can. the apples are from sebastopol, california. >> reporter: they specialize in local produce. washing soot coated fruits and veggies is a simpler problem than another looming issue. produce prices haven't gone up yet, but they say because of supply and demand issues created by covid and the fires, that could all change. >> the prices could go up potentially. not just produce, but for, you know, meat and the deli counter. >> reporter: back to sonoma county where he explains why. >> pg&e cut the power last week so we haven't been able to irrigate at all. on top of that even, they closed the area off, so we haven't been

able to get anybody in here to pick anything either. some of our crops have ripened. it will be considered a loss. >> reporter: trace alamos grows for local food banks which are already hurting because of covid-created unemployment. add that insult on top of the fact that manning lost his santa rosa home and farm in the 2017 tubbs fire. >> it definitely reopens a lot of hurt and mixed feelings about living in an area that's experienced so many fires like we have. >> reporter: kate larsson, abc7 news. >> wildfire victims are now able to register for federal financial help. people can register at disaster assistance.gov. grants are available to help cover rent, home repair and replacement. financial help is also available for expenses like child care and medical costs. state emergency officials say people who suffered losses from the fires should first contact their insurance companies. we have a list of resources on how to donate to help out

of the republican national convention tomorrow through thursday at 7:00 p.m. right here on abc7. >> developing news, a second night of protests have broken out in kenosha, wisconsin, over the police shooting of a black father. police used tear gas to disperse protesters in front of the courthouse while protesters set a garbage truck on fire and threw water bottles at officers in riot gear. is it stems from the weekend shooting of 29-year-old jacob blake. he was shot several times in the back by a white officer as he appeared to be getting in a car. his three young children were sitting inside. the shooting seriously injured blake. >> this was not an accident. this wasn't bad police work. this felt like some sort of -- being taken out on a member of our community. >> two officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave. >> in the south bay here at home, a black santa clara university professor and her brother are at the center of a

racial profiling incident on campus that's gone viral. that professor in her first television interview about the incident spoke with abc7 news anchor don lemon about the change she'd like to see going forward. >> there is no sanctuary or safe space when you are black in the united states. >> reporter: it doesn't matter that danielle morgan is an ivy league educated professor at santa clara university or her brother is a classically trained musician who has performed at carnegie hall. what does matter is they were racially profiled, questioned and harassed by campus security who wanted prove danielle lived in her home. >> one of the officers said to me, which is, you don't own this house. this house doesn't belong to you. >> reporter: as documented in a series of tweets that have gone viral, danielle describes the emotional trauma she and her brother carlos, who was visiting for the weekend, experienced. >> as small and kind of petty a statement i felt that to be, it had much broader implications

that he was reminding me, you don't belong here. >> reporter: the president of the university was quick to issue an apology over the weekend, and monday evening released a second statement. saying in part, the school is dedicating resources to an investigation. the campus safety officers involved will be put on administrative leave and there would be an evaluation of past and present safety policies and records. danielle hopes to move forward and use her platform to make impactful change. >> i would hope that for one, the centuries of voices of students both on santa clara's campus and elsewhere who have had these experiences, this needs to be a broader conversation about racism in the united states. >> reporter: in santa clara, don lemon, abc7 news. >> the california supreme court overturned scot peterson's death sentence today. he was sentenced to death row for murdering his wife lacy and their unborn child christmas eve 2002. their bodies were found on the richmond shoreline.

it has cooled off nicely along the coast and around the bay. let me show you the smoke forecast starting tomorrow morning and taking you through time into the afternoon. notice the smoke is getting pushed out of the bay area to our east. that heavy smoke, at least, we will see an improvement as the stronger sea breeze pulls in, but the air quality will still suffer at times. the spare the air remains through mid week. poor to unhealthy air quality through tuesday and wednesday. getting better thursday and friday moderate air quality. a socked in view from san francisco, low clouds, fog and patchy morning drizzle. smoke and haze the next few days. we are looking at a seasonal summer pattern the rest of the week, so a stable pattern, not expecting any heavy rain. by 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, fog will be pretty widespread except for the inland valleys going into 8:00 a.m. as well and some spotty drizzle along the coast line. as we go into the afternoon, some of that fog peels away, but not all of it will pull away from the coast. fog in the morning and hazy
