this special nigh line, your voice, your vote starts right now. tonight the family of the president, front and center on the second night of the rnc, sprinkled with guest appearances from the incumbent candidate himself. >> i think it was a mixed bag for republicans tonight. donald trump looked at the democratic national convention, he looked at that kind of zoom conference convention and said i want more excitement. i want more pizzazz. and there were long stretches where that didn't happen tonight. there were some breakout moments. there's no question. i thought kentucky attorney general daniel cameron was a breakout star. we saw part of the future of the republican party. no question, in his retort to joe biden, his stinging rebuke of biden, really, biden, if you ain't voting for me, you ain't black, i thought was one of the most telling moments of the convention, melania trump, the

headliner. she gave a traditional first lady speech about bringing the country together around issues of family and issues of togetherness, but it seemed to be mixed a little bit with also that, that attack mode that we've seen so much from the trump family. and i thought it was an uneasy mix. i also thought it was too long. so a mixed bag for republicans. some breakout moments, but i don't think it was the pizzazz and the excitement that donald trump reality tv star and the best producer in this medium right now wanted for night two for the convention. now more on the second night of the rnc and the big moments. here's janai norman. >> a highly-anticipated speech by the first lady. >> the past three and a half years have been unforgettable. there are no words to describe how honored, humbled and fortunate i am to serve our nation as your first lady.

they know him by joe. i want to pick up on something. i think she did a good job. the reason is, successful campaigns take a negative and turn it into an affirmative. she took all the things you don't like about donald trump, the rough edges and said that's an honest man. and a successful campaign takes all your stripes, positive and negative and takes the negatives and makes them work for you. she is the best surrogate. people know, if this is someone she would marry, he can't be that bad a man. so, by just talking about what motivates her and cares about her, she gets that glow by standing next to her. it was not the best of first lady speeches its when you look at other things, but it was an effective first lady speech, because he gets the benefit of people liking her. >> the economy of course continues to suffer greatly. over the past few months, with

doesn't. >> i also want to talk to the governor's point, it depends on who we're trying to talk to. i think both parties are trying to talk to this narrow group of people who can move one side or the other. and i think for the millions of people suffering under the weight of this pandemic, i don't think anybody's talking to them the way they need to be talked to. and i think that's the mistake of this campaign. we know every election is decided by the people who don't show up. 2016 was decided by the folks who don't show up. they are the largest plurality of voters. 42%. if nobody's reaching them -- >> we all know that is a fair point except for one thing. every primary, every general election starting from 2018 and in this process, there has been higher turnout than ever before. turnout is going to hit historic highs. you have a midterm election that was turnout level of a presidential election. everyone is voting. and i don't disagree with your premise. i just don't agree with the

conclusion of that premise. >> but yvette, i wanted to bring back that jon ponder moment earlier tonight at the beginning of the event, president trump had that surprise pardon for jon ponder who was the convicted bank robber. in many ways you saw that as a draw for black voters. is that effective? >> for most black folks, i just pardoned a black man, it does not work. i don't think it's for black people. i think the objective is to make him seem like he has black people who support him or he supports black people. this is for the suburban white women who think he's too racist. >> not every one of these individuals is a token. with all due respect, no one forced them to come up and speak at this convention. these are folks who have a different view on how to solve problems in america. >> he is a politician. and he knows he only has 8% of black people, please, this is so
