talk show. this is on my bucket list of things i wanted to do in my career. this is amazing. one of my other bucket list things was going to the oscars. but let me tell you something. i'm going to tell you, at first i wasn't invited. jimmy made sure i got there. you got me to the oscars, and you got me a hosting job. but this is really dope, we got this airbnb, this is where we at. this is not the studio, i thought that's what it would be, a live studio audience and talking to people, but nah, i'm in this random airbnb in west hollywood. and, with a family still here, because you know, we all quarantined. people are still renting out airbnbs in quarantine, but they still there, too. it's just a whole weird situation. but that's not the weirdest thing going on, to be honest with you, the republican national convention is going on, and that is a very weird experience, to be honest with
12:37 am
you. like, if you don't want to be irritated or you get easily irritated, please do not watch the republican national convention. if your mental health is right on the edge of you going crazy, do not watch the republican national convention. if you got high blood pressure, please, do not watch, it is way too much going on there. first of all, donald trump has his whole family speaking. like i didn't even know tiffany trump existed. i don't even know what she does for real. but she was speaking at this convention, and this is so weird. it is so many random speakers. one of the speakers, and it's not necessarily random, but yeah, it is random, i will say that. last year, there was a group of protesters at the washington monument, an elder native-american and a faceoff between him and this young maga kid, you know, maga is make america great again. he had his red hat on, making that weird smirk on his face,
12:38 am
like a little jerk, like this is crazy, and that hat, man, he actually spoke at the convention. that's right. nick sandman spoke at the convention. the things he was saying that was fascinating to me was he kept talking about being canceled and how the media made him look like a bad guy, and he felt this way, and it was crazy, because they didn't want to hear his side of the story. but this was what was interesting. he said he got a victory. he did, because he was able to tell his side of the story. that's right. this teenager who said he didn't do anything and didn't mean any malice about what he was doing got a chance to tell his side of the story, and he was complaining about being canceled and nobody would listen to him and the media picked on him. that made me think. i thought about all the teenagers that didn't get a chance to tell their side of any story, right? i can name a couple black teenagers who i would love to hear their side of the story, one in particular, trayvon martin.
12:39 am
i would have loved to hear what trayvon side of his story was when him and george zimmerman had a crazy moment in time where he ended up dead. i would have loved to hear what trayvon had to say about what happened that night. his side. because we only heard one side. or mike brown's side of his story, right? see, it's a lot going on in this country, right? and if i can be honest, i'm a comedian, an actor, everything is just not funny right now. i'm more tired and annoyed right now. i want to give a shout out to the nba and wnba. they've been using their platform to stand up for social injustices. that's right. i am proud of them. they boycotted. they didn't play for the last few days. i think they're super dope. they don't care about their paychecks. they know what's wrong is wrong. and they're standing out for
12:40 am
that. there's a lot going on when you think about the black people in our country and the police. that relationship is so broken. so broken. i mean, the other day, we had another police shooting, right? and an unarmed black man, jacob blake, was shot in his back seven times. he was shot seven times in front of his children. unarmed. thank god he's not dead, but he's paralyzed from the waist down. he got shot in broad day light, in front of the community and in front of his babies. and i bring that up to say this, the police love to say, ah, we think he was going after something. we felt in danger, whatever. the next night after that, it was protests going on because of that particular shooting. a young man, 17, drove from
12:41 am
illinois to wisconsin. with a gun. and decided that he wanted to take matters in his own hands. this young man allegedly, and i, allegedly, which you can see on video the allegedly, the alleged shot two people and killed them. allegedly. but this is what's not allegedly. he got up with a full-blown gun on him, with people yelling at the police, hey, that guy just shot some people. with his hands up like this, walked right past the police. wasn't touched, wasn't stopped. wasn't yelled at. any of that, with a full-blown gun on him. and the day before an unarmed man, who was breaking up a fight, mind you that, was shot
12:42 am
seven times in his back in front of his children. my, my point is this, right? you know i hear a lot of people get mad and a lot of us are saying please defund the police. defund the police. i say all the time, because that funding can go somewhere else, especially if you're not going to use the funding to protect or do your job properly. they get billions of dollars every year. the police get billions. that don't even sound real. they get billions of dollars. the same cities. these same states are crying that they don't have money for education. i come from a family full of educators. my aunts and my cousin. one in particular, my aunt rhoda jean hatch to passed away from covid in april. great educators. they would strike, they would
12:43 am
protest to get more money for funding for schools. and all these state officials, we don't got no money, where we going to get the money from? we don't have no money. when they been giving the police billions of dollars to not do their job correctly. come on, now. come on. look, at the end of the day as taxpayers, right, we have the right, we have the right, we have the right to select the right people to be in office. i know we always focus on just the presidency, but it all starts from the bottom. you vote, you got to vote the right council men in, the right alderman in. the right senator in. judges and everything. i know we want to down play voting. no, voting is crazy important. so get out there and vote. i promise you, we're going to make change. i can feel it. i can feel it happening. i'm seeing a lot of us come together even in this crazy time.
12:44 am
people are really starting to open their eyes. black and white. come on, here. let's stick together on this for real, and once again, jimmy, thank you for this platform for letting me really be honest and deliver a message that i think people need to hear. and this is from my own personal opinion. i mean, look, either i was going to do this or go on my instagram live. either way i was going to talk about this either way. we've got a good show for you tonight. i am so excited. we have a very special musical performance from riley, and we'll be right back with yvonne orji. ♪ >> dicky: abc's "jimmy kimmel live," brought to you by the samsung galaxy note 20 ultra 5g. ♪ live the life you want to have ♪ ♪ send it off, with a bang ♪
