wildfire evacuees start returning home, many so relieved that the worst is over. and it is back to school in the classroom. the sunnyvale school that is resuming in-person learning and their plan to make it work during this pandemic. good morning, everybody. happy friday. we have made to friday. it is august 28th. we know there is a lot going on, but we'll still be happy about that and we'll check in with mike nicco. >> hi, everybody. yeah, we'll start with the current air quality. places like ukiah and willitts. but as you look elsewhere, we have green and yellow, which means that there is good air quality until you get around boulder creek and scotts valley. and it is unhealthy for everybody. and it will remain in the north bay and south bay that have the poorest air quality. so what you

is a lot of fog as high pressure moves over top of us. haven't heard of any drizzle yet and this marine layer that is kind of absent today as far as strong breezes will allow our temperatures to warm into the 60s at coast, 70s and 80s around the bay. and hotter weather is coming up. while most schools are conducting classes online, a school in the south bay is getting a waiver. it has already resumed in-class instruction. and education of course one of the five key issues foe us focusing on. and julian glover is live with more. >> reporter: yes, it will be welcome back to the classroom for the second consecutive day for about 57 elementary school students here at sunnyvale christian school. the second day back to school for them. i spoke to an employee here earlier, he told meyf the students were just so happy

to be back and i'm sure the parents are happy as well. this private school started with online learning like everyone else, but quickly transitioned to in-person learning in the classroom when the state approved their waiver request. so this is the first school here in the bay area to receive the waiver and reopen. according to the mercury news, moreland school district will be starting in-person instruction next week making them the second school here in the bay area to do so. sachbts clai santa clara county reporting 62 schools are seeking the waivers to reopen. but in some counties, that is not the reality. for example in alameda county, they are not considering waivers right now. and one concern for the school, however, is enrollment, we're hearing that that has been cut

by about half just trying to shake things off from the pandemic. also hearing this morning that this is a really wbig relief because parents didn't know what they would to with their students out of school while they are working completely from home. so a big task. but now 57 of those kids back to school here. julian glover, abc 7 news. there is much needed good news for businesses in contra costa county including nail salons, massage studios and gyms. they can reopen, of course they have to do it outdoors. the county health department gave the green light for those hard hit businesses earlier this week. it is because of declining coronavirus infection rates, although contra costa county is still on the state's watch list. also hotels and short term rentals are allowed to reopen to recreational travellers.

a bill that would extend the statewide eviction moratorium is expected to be unveiled this morning. the covid-19 eviction ban is set to expire on tuesday. and the bill is sponsored by david chiu. and it has been a subject of nonstop negotiation by landlords, apartment associations and rights groups. and it will through january 31. tenants would still be required to pay at least 25% of rent in the coming months. for the bill to take effect immediately, two-thirds 6 most chambers need to pass it. the latest on the bay area wildfires, good weather is helping firefighters on the front lines of the czu complex. the massive scu lightning complex has scorched more than 369,000 acres and it is 35% contained. and then the north bay, the lnu

let's get a check of the forecast with mike. >> and we had smelled some smoke here in the studio and sure enough, some unhealthy air briefly. and here is a look at the north bay where we've seen the most unhealthy air and it is for all of us around willitts and ukiah. we have green and yellow no most of the bay area and down into the santa cruz mountains. with the marine layer compressed, it looks like we have a chance that localized areas will have unhealthy air through the weekend and that would be the north bay and south bay. and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on our local economy is a major focus of our effort to build a better bay area. and today a little more normalcy

is returning to parts of the east bay with an amendment to the alameda county health order. amy hollyfield is live with the details about this. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, i hope we see some good makeover pictures today. here in pleasanton, now being allowed starting today. this is finally happening here. there will be some restrictions, they have to cut hair outside. but they are allowed to open. and salons have been fighting hard for this, many have held protests demanding to be open so that they could make a living. they have been asking to open indoors because of the heat that they face, but alameda county has stayed closed. here is what the opportunity looks like. other counties like contra costa have allowed salons to open, but outdoor only. and these businesses have told us that it is challenging.

they have to deal with the weather and now recently they have been dealing with smoke from the fires. and they have had to move their equipment in and out every day. they say that it is not ideal, some have chosen not to open at all. but it is an opportunity to try to make some money and get the haircuts that people have been wanting. if you have to take your mask off for a service, then the county says it is a but health officials say that these services are considered hoe risk. cases of the viruses here have stabilized, so they think that this step is okay for now. it will be interesting to see which salons decide to go ahead and try this. also in alameda county, public pools are also allowed to reopen. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news.

in the south bay, a private school has become the first school in the bay area to reopen its campus for in-person learning. and julian glover is live at sunnyvale christian school with more are on that. >> i would say that in about an hour from now when the school opens we'll see 57 smiling young elementary school students, but of course they will have the face masks on when they go inside. but nonetheless they will be reporting back here to school for their second consecutive day of in-person learning. i spoke to a staff member earlier this morning who said that the students were very excited yesterday. so the private school started online but quickly transitioning to in-person learning in the classroom when the state of california approved the school's waiver request. state officials in july requiring all elementary schools within counties on the state watch list to apply for a waiver to restart instruction inside

the classroom machined a. and while this is the first, several others are seeking such waivers. we're hearing that 62 schools are looking for those 5 56 are private schools and only three are public school districts. and several are being considered in santa clara county for reo n reopening, but one concern for the school however is enrollment. it is struggling right now. we're hearing that enrollment has been cut by half because of covid-19 and many parents pulling their students out of this very expensive school here, $1,000 a month on average for tuition. but again, we've seen a few lights turn on inside of the classrooms this morning and hopefully we'll see the students showing up here in just a matter of minutes.

julian glover, abc 7 news. happening today, governor newsom will hold another update on the state's response to the wild fires and also the pandemic. on wednesday, the governor 2340u7bs announced plans to expand covid-19 testing capacity and cutting costs and shortening test turnaround times. this is part of a new plan to prepare ahead of flu season. you can watch the update live at noon. from the live desk, the suspect accused of shooting a group of bloaters in kenosha isi expected to appear in court. kyle rittenhouse is accused of opening fire on three people at a protest in support of jacob blake. two of those protesters died. and rittenhouse also faces felony counts of endangering safety and being in poepgs of a dangerous weapon.

and the thick dust is starting to burn out. >> santa cruz county says that they have detonated what looked like a pipe about him found yesterday inside a home in boulder creek. the bomb squad responded and blew it up and now they are investigating the incident. and now the ear bay area fires, starting with the scu complex. they have 35% containment. it has burned nearly 370,000 acres. and lnu is nearly the same size. cal fire says that their highest priority is the rough terrain near middletown and lake county and the walbridge fire. national guard crews are out on the front lines and it is also 35% contained.
