than 800,000 people still without power this morning. >> yeah, we are going to be talking about that all morning. we want to begin with the big night at the white house. overnight, president trump officially accepting his party's nomination for a second time. >> in a way that's never been done before. the white house, the people's house, a purely partisan stage. trump made his case this is the most important election in history posing a stark choice between him and joe biden all before a packed audience on the south lawn. few wearing masks during this pandemic. mary bruce was there and starts us off. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, this was a surreal scene. the president transforming the people's house into what looked and felt very much like a campaign rally. for over an hour, the president touted his own record and he argued that he is the one that can lead the country out of these crises, and went on the attack going after joe biden in a speech that was full of misleading statements and false claims about what could happen if trump is not re-elected. overnight, president trump reveling in the moment. it was something we've never seen before, the south lawn of

the white house converted into a packed convention floor. nearly 2,000 supporters, no social distancing and very few masks. >> the fact is i'm here. what's the name of that building? but i'll say it differently, the fact is we're here and they're not. >> reporter: in a 70-minute acceptance speech, the second longest in history, the president painted a dark picture of what the country will face if he is not reelected. >> if the radical left take power they will apply their policies to every city, town and suburb in america. >> reporter: casting himself as the law and order president, he made only a passing reference to the police violence that has sparked social unrest across this country. >> when there is police misconduct, the justice system must hold wrongdoers fully and

completely accountable and it will. but when we can never have a situation -- we must never allow mob rule. we can never allow mob rule. >> reporter: going on the attack, trump called out joe biden by name 41 times, arguing his opponent is a danger to america. >> this election will decide whether we will defend the american way of life or whether we will allow a radical movement to completely dismantle and destroy it. it won't happen. >> reporter: biden tweeting throughout, fired back. remember, every example of violence donald trump decries has happened on his watch under his leadership during his presidency. just steps from the white house, a stark contrast. protesters demanding change and racial justice saying the president has divided the nation and doing their best to disrupt his remarks.

[ crowd chanting ] introducing her father -- >> tonight i stand before you as the proud daughter of the people's president. >> reporter: ivanka trump saying the president is privately racked by the toll of the pandemic. >> i've been with my father and i've seen the pain in his eyes when he receives updates on the lives that have been stolen by this plague. >> reporter: trump touted his response even as 180,000 americans have now died. >> to save as many lives as possible we are focusing on the science, the facts and the data, and together, we will crush the virus. >> reporter: but trump's messaging on the pandemic has often been at odds with the nation's scientific experts. the massive audience last night, a violation of his own administration's policies, and he went after biden for saying he would shut down the country again if health officials say it was needed to get the virus under control. >> joe biden's plan is not a solution to the virus, but rather it's a surrender to the

virus. >> reporter: trump insists he's already building back the economy. >> over the past three months we have gained over 9 million jobs and that's a record in the history of our country. >> reporter: but with over 20 million jobs lost, unemployment claims remain at record highs. trump telling supporters he is the one who can lead the country out of these crises. >> the best is yet to come. >> reporter: now overnight the biden campaign slammed the president for delivering what they called a delusional vision of the country. they say he simply doesn't grasp american values. george? >> and mary, now that we're through the conventions, both sides are getting back to campaigning and a little more active despite the pandemic. >> reporter: the president is eager to get back out there on the campaign trail headed to new hampshire today and he is expected to be visiting some key battleground states in the coming weeks. joe biden, who has been laying low, is also hoping to travel a bit more. his campaign says he will head to key states like arizona and

wisconsin after labor day, but only if they can do so in accordance with local safety guidelines. george? >> mary bruce, thanks very much. cecelia? we turn to the aftermath of hurricane laura. one of the strongest storms to ever hit the gulf coast and rob marciano rode out that storm in lake charles, louisiana where the damage is now severe. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. the damage is, yes, so extensive. we may nototten the extreme flooding, but we have these winds. this is built of bricks. substantial building. this looks like a wedding dress. that's because this is a wedding boutique. look on the second floor, bridal gowns still hanging there. the roof completely tore off. so many businesses, homes damaged and completely destroyed and we're not done with laura

yet. overnight, laura driving inland as a tropical depression. torrential rains now threatening parts of the midsouth and at least two reported tornadoes in arkansas. in jonesboro, a church and several homes ripped apart. texas and louisiana reeling from the monstrous storm devastating communities. >> there it goes. >> reporter: the hurricane making landfall as a strong category 4 storm. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: producing winds of 150 miles per hour causing catastrophic destruction. between the two states, six dead and over 850,000 residents without power. vast areas between white lake and cameron now submerged in water. in some parts of the coast, treetops and the roofs of homes are the only things visible. at this chemical plant west of lake charles, a fire igniting, filling the air with chlorine gas and clouds of smoke. this storm completely derailing a mile-long freight train. louisiana homes severely damaged. kim eagleston and her daughter carlissa thankful to be alive. >> it was a roller coaster.

>> terrifying. >> terrifying. >> reporter: this man's mobile home flipped on to its head. the wheels and the base facing upward. his family's belongings scattered across a field. >> i'm happy. it's just how much do i have to go through? >> reporter: on the water, kyle ricks riding this storm out in a towboat. >> definitely not something i would want to experience on the land. i felt a lot safer on a boat that floats and made out of steel. >> reporter: the search for survivors under way this morning. local sheriff's departments traversing battered neighborhoods conducting welfare checks. officers worried the owner of this home was missing. thankfully a neighbor relaying that they were able to evacuate. >> i think they're in texas. >> reporter: what businesses and homes that are still standing, they won't have power for weeks, if not, months. there are natural gas leaks all over the city. you can smell that, and the water is not running. the hospital has been evacuating patients to more equipped

facilities. recovery here, george, will take a long, long time. >> so much destruction there. rob, thanks very much. let's bring in ginger. ginger, the storm not done yet. >> reporter: no, and that's why i came back. we couldn't even get to cameron where it made landfall. roads are still cut off but we've seen tornadoes in arkansas overnight. now tornado warnings in western tennessee because it's still spinning in arkansas and will move east today. first threat going to be flash flooding on a widespread nature. paducah through nashville, tupelo and northern alabama. the timing of this is important because it'll move through today in western tennessee and kentucky but watch by midnight. that's when you get the heavy rains in nashville and could see spin with this and could see tornadoes still popping up from kentucky down to alabama and then as it slides east we'll add tropical moisture to new york, new jersey and connecticut by tomorrow afternoon. janai? >> all right, ginger, thank you so much. now to the latest on that deadly shooting at the protests in kenosha, wisconsin. the 17-year-old suspect set to face a judge later today is

charged with two counts of homicide. alex perez has been following the latest from kenosha all week long and joins us with more. alex, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, janai. that will be an extradition hearing to bring him back here to wisconsin to face charges. this morning we're learning a lot more about how exactly things unfolded on that deadly night. overnight, protesters back on the streets demanding justice for jacob blake. the national guard called in from three states, and now new details emerging about the deadly shooting that erupted during a night of unrest earlier this week. 17-year-old kyle rittenhouse, seen in this video before the shooting, now in custody charged with homicide accused of killing two people and injuring a third. the teen from antioch, illinois a former police cadet seen guarding a car repair shop tuesday night telling blaze tv he was armed with lethal ammunition. >> we're protecting it from the citizens and i just got pepper

sprayed by a person in the crowd. >> reporter: an hour and a halfc incident unfolds detailed in a new criminal complaint. at 11:48 p.m. rittenhouse can be seen running across a parking lot. he turns to face a protester, now identified as joseph rosenbaum, and shoots him. he picks up his phone then runs away. rosenbaum does not survive. one minute later, at 11:49, the shooter can be seen running down the street long gun in hand, protesters tackle him to the ground. his next victim, anthony huber tries to grab the gun, seen in these still photos attempting to disarm him with a skateboard but he is shot in the chest and killed. another protester is shot in the arm while his hands are raised. at 11:51 he approaches police arriving on the scene. as police move in, rittenhouse can be seen with his hands up, but he's not n uore than 12 thae he's turned himself in across

state lines in illinois. >> in situations that are high stress, you have such an incredible tunnel vision. >> reporter: some now raising questions about the police response in light of jacob blake's shooting. now kenosha police revealing new information identifying the officer who shot blake seven times in the back as rusten sheskey. sheskey and two other officers have been placed on administrative leave and the federal civil rights investigation has been open. the other officers involved have been identified. officer brittany marinack who joined the department in ja january. and this morning a demand for answers. jacob blake's father saying his son is handcuffed to his hospital bed while he recovers from those seven shots to his back. there had been a warrant out for blake's arrest when sunday's shooting unfolded, but no word on whether that warrant is why

blake is handcuffed to his bed. authorities scrubbing through vars you social media accounts believed to belong to the accus accused. joining us right now is wisconsin attorney general. your office is the lead on this investigation. it's an independent investigation into jacob blake's shooting. you released new information this morning. among that information that the officer who fired the shots at blake and a second officer first used their tasers. that didn't work. why did they need to use their tasers? >> the officers were attempting an arrest. they used their tasers in the course of that process. they were trying to stop mrmr. mr. blake. those tasers didn't work. mr. blake ultimately was shot. >> we also know there was a knife that was found in blake's car. did the officers that responded

to the scene know there was a knife there prior to the shooting? >> we're not commenting on that detail at this point in the investigation. mr. blake stated to investigators that he had a knife in his possession. there was one found on the driver's side floor board. >> i got to push you on that, sir. it's a question you refused to answer so far. it was your office that released this detail about the knife. many people would say that that disparages blake in this story that we know so far. why not tell the full story now? >> it's an ongoing investigation. we're not commenting on facts that may be disputed. ultimately this case will be presented after a full and thorough investigation to a prosecutor. if there is charges filed in this case, it will be tried in a court of law. it's our top priority to protect the integrity of the

investigation. >> this is something the entire country is watching right now. it's at the heart of the protests we're seeing. an officer holding blake's shirt when he opens fire and shoots him in the back. how does that happen? >> well, that's part of what the investigation is about, is conducting a full and thorough investigation of the facts of this case so we have as complete an understanding as possible of what lead to those events, so a charging decision can be made f. the case goes before a jury, so the jury has a full and complete picture of the facts. >> are the officers cooperating with the investigation? >> yes, there has been corporation with this investigation. the investigation is moving forward briskly. there have been several material witness interviews conducted. the investigation continues. >> how transparent will you be? >> we continue providing the

and good morning. i'm reggie aqui. despite the coronavirus pandemic and economic catastrophe it's caused for many, san francisco's board of supervisors has approved a plan to give raises to city workers. nearly $37 million will be taken out. workers will get 3% raises in december. they voted to fund the raise with the business tax stabilization reserves. the maifr has voiced concerns over using so much money out of the reserves. today, the governor is going to hold another update to the state's response on wildfires and pandemic. on wednesday, he announced big

washington, d.c. later today for the get your knee off our necks march while honoring the 57th anniversary of martin luther king's "i have a dream" speech at the lincoln memorial. we'll have much more on that in our next half hour. >> that will be tracked all day long on abc newslive. right now we're going to go the scandal rocked liberty university and its evangelical leader, jerry falwell jr. a former pool attendant, giancarlo granda, calls falwell a predator saying he engaged in sexual liaisons with falwell's wife while falwell watched. we'll talk with him in an exclusive interview. deborah roberts has the latest, and a second allegation overnight from a former student at liberty. good morning, deb. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a scandal that seems to grow deeper and wider by the day for a man that was once at the top of his game in christian conservative circles. now jerry falwell jr. is not only out at the world's top atis . this morning, that new

allegation about the falwells coming from a former liberty university student providing an anonymous account in politico alleging he had a sexual encounter with becki falwall, the wife of the school's former president jerry falwell jr. while he was a 22-year-old. the falwells called the allegation false and mean spirited. it is the latest in a shocking string of scandals to hit one of the most influential families in the evangelical conservative movement. >> as our friendship has grown, so has my admiration for mr. trump. >> reporter: a staunch advocate in republican politics, and for president trump, falwell resigned from the college following a series of stunning developments. first, a racy photo he posted then took down from social media with his arm around his wife's assistant. he apologized for posting it saying, it was just in good fun from a costume party. then that first jaw-dropping allegation of sexual impropriety that directly goes against the

school's strict moral code. >> we are so proud of our students here at liberty, and it's just such an honor to be able to serve alongside them, and we try to teach good family values and good morals. >> reporter: falwell accused by his 29-year-old former business partner, giancarlo granda, of being aware of and even observing granda's affair with falwell's wife, becki, though falwell denies any involvement. granda says he met them when he was a 20-year-old pool attendant in 2012 and their relationship took off from there lasting years. he provided this audio recording as proof. >> his new thing is like telling me every time he hooks up with people, like i don't have feelings or something. >> you're going to make her jealous. >> not trying to do that. >> reporter: granda says he vacationed with the falwells, even went into business with them owning a miami youth hostel. in this email shared exclusively with abc news granda says falwell offered a glowing recommendation for him to apply to georgetown university in 2018.

calling him a quick study on all business related matters, consistent, dependable and someone who has operated with the highest business ethics and integrity. but the relationship later soured. now the falwells are accusing granda of extortion, claiming he threatened to go public with the affair unless he was paid millions. but granda denies that allegation. overnight, the falwells declining to comment on granda's allegations. falwell has reached out to numerous news organizations over the last week including abc news and so has his wife becki, both vigorously denying most of granda's claim, and both say they're victims of a man who tried to take advantage of them. no word yet from the couple on this newest allegation. george? >> okay, deb, thanks very much. let's bring in giancarlo granda right now. thank you for joining us this morning. let's begin with their denial. they say that you had an affair with mrs. falwell, but jerry falwell jr. was not involved in

any way. but you say from the start they were both involved? >> first off, thank you for having me on. and jerry's lying. that was his game plan from the beginning, to st throw her under the bus, which i think speaks a lot about who he is, about his character. and he was aware from day one of our relationship, and he did, in fact, watch. >> how would that work? describe the encounters. >> so let's go back to when i first met them. i was 20 years old working at the fontainebleau hotel working my way through college. and, you know, i'm talking to some guests, and i notice this woman behind me staring at me. she was noticeably drunk, and she was just flirting with me. you know, then we started flirting back and forth. and then towards the end of my work shift, she's like, hey, do you want to go back to my hotel room? and as a single 20-year-old i'm like, yeah, of course, and then

she's like, but my husband wants to watch, and immediately i thought it was a bit strange, and i backed off. she said, oh, no, but he's not going to do anything. he's just going to sit in the corner, and he just wants to watch, and it's his thing. she mentioned that they were actually at a swingers club the night before, miami velvet, but it wasn't their thing. they said it was kind of gross because there were too many people and they wanted a more intimate session. so i had no idea who they were at the time. after my work shift, they called me through a blocked number to schedule where to meet, and we met at another hotel. and i walk into the lobby and, you know, becki is sitting there, waiting for me, and we were both nervous at the time. and then she offered me whiskey to relax, to calm my nerves. we talked for a bit. i relaxed, and then we went upstairs, and jerry was laying on the bed. he was laying on the bed. he was drunk, and he was giggling. and again i'm kind of weirded out at this moment, and i said, hey, if at any point you get jealous or want me to back off,

just let me know, and i'll walk out of here. he's like, no, no, just go for it. that's how it began. >> this would then happen on other occasions as well, and what would he be doing? >> right, i mean, he -- i don't want to go too much into the details. i don't want to go too much into the details, but he enjoyed watching. >> they say now that you're trying to extort them. why come forward now? this started seven years ago. >> so, again, so going back to that time i -- you know, after that fontainebleau or the hotel, you know, that first night, shortly after we had a weekend getaway in the florida keys. and this trip, you know, we were doing our -- you know, the nature of the relationship continued there. and, you know, i mentioned to them that when i was younger, right, when i was in high

school, i suffered with video game addiction. you know, at the time i was timid, a bit nervous, and i believe, now in hindsight, they spotted these weaknesses and made me an ideal target. i shared, you know, this passion project of mine where it's a company that would connect video gamers suffering from video game addiction to families with health coaches. and he said, oh, i think that's an excellent idea and, you know, actually you could probably partner up with liberty. you know, you should come to new york with us. we're having a business trip and we can talk more about it. and then at this trip in new york city, we stayed at a hotel on park avenue, and he said, look, i really like your idea, but before you can ever help anyone, you need to make a lot of money yourself. so -- and this is jerry saying this. he was, like, i have a background in real estate. pick a property in miami. pick a handful of properties and we'll get the best one and you'll get a 25% ownership stake in it, and that's exactly what i did. >> they suggest you targeted them and that you may have targeted other successful women. >> that's false. that's ridiculous.

cover story. we're take a look at how several sleep-away camps successfully avoided coronavirus outbreaks an to schools to help keep students safe. trevor ault is at a camp on long island with more on that new cdc study. trevor, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai. here at crestwood country day camp they had 600 campers this summer session and zero covid-19 cases. the long island camp association opened 15 camps. they only reported cases at one of them and contained it to just five positive tests. now, they credit their multiple diligent precautions and this morning the cdc says schools can learn a lot from camps like this. as the summer fun comes to an end and students head out of camp and into the classroom, it's not just the children learning lessons. >> the planning was key. i mean, obviously we wanted everybody to be safe. >> reporter: a cdc study has powerful new takeaways for mitigating covid outbreaks, citing the success of four

summer camps in maine. >> we called them layers to mitigation. it wasn't one thing that was going to keep everybody safe. >> reporter: their guide to success, a mandatory 14-day quarantine prior to the start of camp, frequent cleaning, mask protocols and maximizing outdoor space. then having campers quarantine in pods which they called neighborhoods or families for the first two weeks of camp. >> we decided to call their bunk or their cabin, their family, and when you're with your family, you don't don't need to be masked and you can talk with your family and be with your family. >> reporter: experts like dr. laura blaisdell says it can be used in schools. tip number one, diligence and consistency. >> masking everybody, it's maintaining distance all the time. >> reporter: tip two, layered safety protocols. >> it's the layering of all of these public health layers, masking, distancing,

ventilation, screenings that allows us to see the strength and the robust nature in preventing communicable disease spread. >> reporter: and tip three, create a culture of compliance. >> going to schools or camps or colleges is a privilege this year and we all need to take care of one another and do what we can. >> reporter: of course, not every summer camp was so fortunate. georgia's high harbor camp had hundreds of campers test positive despite precautions and only being open for four days. >> because the camp was mostly outdoors, i didn't understand how it could have happened based on the precautions and the space. >> reporter: a cdc report found their staff were wearing masks but campers weren't and frequent shouting and chanting didn't help. [ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: but others like crestwood country day camp on long island -- >> it did not spread. that's pretty awesome. >> reporter: -- are wrapping up the summer season with zero covid cases. >> it is not the same, but what
