building a better pay area for a safe and secure future, this is abc 7 news. chants and protests fill the streets of oakland again over the police shooting of jacob blake. businesses say they're getting tired of cleaning up and have a thing for the group of protesters to consider, as today supporters of president trump plan to use the bay area icon as their stage. good morning, it's sunday, august 30th. i'm liz kreutz. thanks for joining us. we have a lot to get to this morning but let's start with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> liz, good morning to you. lots of low clouds and fog. air quality is good. you can see the extent of the cloud deck in the north bay over to the east bay and a little bit hazy in the south bay. temperatures in the 50s.

53 santa rosa. 60 in oakland. it's 56 in livermore. 56 by the fire in the north bay. relative humidity over 75% with light winds. it is 64, kind of mild in lahonda. we'll be looking at lighter winds but unfortunately the wind direction will be shifting later on today. it's 57 by the delta. a slightly warmer day inland, another spare the air alert and with the north winds numbers come up four to five degrees inland and looking at a bigger warming trend for the week ahead. we'll detail that in a few minutes. >> thank you. a weekend of protests in the bay area and nationwide, spawned by the filmed police shooting of jacob blake in kenosha, wisconsin. in oakland, more than 100 people pack part in the latest round of

protests overnight. one officer was injured as they were forced to use tear gas rocks and bottles were thrown and lasers pointed. abc 7 news reporter luz pena has the story. >> reporter: this is night three of oakland protesters demanding justice for jacob blake, an african-american man who was shot seven times in the back by a wisconsin police officer, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down and generating nationwide protests. oakland police reporting one of their officers was injured as the crd threw rocks and bottles and pointed lays ler to their officers. >> changes in policy need to be made with the police brutality against the african-american males in this community, so definitely we're suprtive of peaceful protesting. >> reporter: as the night are frayed of history repeating itself, where smashed windows and fires were left behind.

pena, abc 7 news. >> jacob blake's family led a peaceful justice for jacob march through kenosha, protesting systemic racism and police brutality. hundreds prove testers demanded justice for the 29-year-old father. rittenhouse, who allegedly shot and killed two protesters last week. >> he took life that wasn't his to take, he took it. so how will he be famous? infamously famous? you know, they make a big deal out of scarface, but he killed a lot of people, right? so he's infamously famous. that's what we're talking about? is gxcharged with two counts of homicide and one count of attempted homicide. the white house says president trump will visit kenosha on tuesday to meet with law enforcement and look at the some of the damage from recent protests. yesterday he praised the federal presence in wisconsin. take a listen.

>> we've had tremendous success as you know. we were finally able to get the go-ahead from the local authorities to send in the national guard. we sent in the national guard, guard, everybody cleared out, and it became safe. >> the white house has not said if the president will meet wit jacob blake's family. on friday his father said they have not heard from the white house about blake's shooting. developing overnight, brand new video, as police are investigating in portland one person was shot and killed downtown while protests were not clear if the two are connected, but they do say duelling demonstrations were being held between supporters of president trump and black lives matter protesters. portland's local abc affiliate reports seeing clashes breaking out between the two groups. protesters have rallied in downtown portland every night for the past three months since the killing of george floyd by a police officer in minneapolis.

happening today, in san francisco, a rally in support of president trump, taking a live look from our golden gate bridge camera, foggy and dark there now, but in just a few hours, trump supporters will be there, the walk-away campaign, organizing this event and the group says it "encourages people to leave the democratiparty of today." so they plan to sail a fleet of plan to walk across the bridge, and it starts at 10:00 this morning. also happening today, a coalition of san francisco residents will show their support for the police department, with a march through golden gate park. many team have called for defunding poce, and diverting money from the police budget to community programs. organizers of today's march say sfpd is being "unfairly demonized" and want to show their support for officers and their dedication to the city. the walk starts at 8:00 this morning near the dejhung museum. a major shift tomorrow in california's road to reopening. governor newsom's new guideline

also be ushered in and based on the four color coded tiers, purple, red, orange and yellow, purple meaning there is widespread transmission down to yellow, which is minimal. most of the bay area will start off in purple. however, hair salons and barber shops along with malls will be able to open with limited indoor operations. keep in mind, counties do have the final say and ey can't have stricter guidelines than the state. for example, san francisco, they are taking a slower approach. salons will only be able to open outdoors. san francisco health leaders are accepting waiver applications this week for schools to be able to reopen for in-person learning, according to "the examiner" sfusd has not applied so far. if you have questions about this new color coded system for reopening, you can just head to our website, you see this interactive map, where y can

good morning again. we'll start this half hour with another look at the weather, talking about air quality and maybe a little bit of a cooler weather that we are going to see this weekend, lisa, maybe? >> well the marine layer helping to keep temperatures from not getting too warm at the coast and around the bay, but as we look live right now, santa cruz, you can see all the fog. 53 degrees right here, highs in and around the low 70s. it's 55 downtown. 60 in oakland. it has been cool at the coast, but we will be rebounding, and our inland valleys today, but yes, the bigger issue is air quality. san rafael right there, you can see the gray sky. it is 54 right there, 56 by the delta, and looking at the

current conditions for the fires, with numbers in the 50s, relative humidity is where we like it, high and the winds are light so that has been testifily a good thing from the coast to right here, point reyes, 100% relative humidity, a little milder down by lahanda. the winds go offshore for the week ahead. 56 right there by vacaville. here is a look at emeryville. the numbers are coming up through about 80 noontime, inland upper 80s. so the warmth is increasing inland. we'll let you know about the week ahead in a few minutes. liz? >> thank you. nationwide protests continue following the police shooting of jacob blake. president trump is planning a visit to kenosha, wisconsin, tuesday, blake was shot seven times in the back. his family says he is paralyzed. alex percette has new details on the case. >> reporter: calls for justice echoing once again through the

streets of kenosha saturday afternoon. this as police release a statement disputing the wisconsin department of justice's version of the events that let rusten chesky to shoot 29-year-old blake. authorities have not released many details and unclear where the police union maintained its information which made several unfounded allegations against blake. the new developments as blake recovers in the hospital, paralyzed from the waist down, and until friday, handcuffed to his bed, allegedly under armed guard, because of a previous warrant. meanwhile, the investigation continues into the 17-year-old charged with killing two demonstrators and injuring a third. newly obtained by video appears to show kyle rittenhouse chased by one man, after the teenager allegedly shot a demonstrator.

rittenhouse arguing his client had no choice but to fire multiple rounds toward his immediate attackers because he feared for his life and tonight, the kenosha sheriff defending why officers did not immediately arrest rittenhouse as he walked towards police vehicles with an assault style rifle slung across his chest. >> person running down the street with their hands up is not a risk to me. >> reporter: jacob blake's father reacting to his son's shooting at friday's march on washington. >> i'm tired of looking at cameras and seeing these young black and brown people suffer. >> reporter: alex pirchette, abc news, washington. president trump visit the parts of louisiana and texas devastated by the deadly and violent hurricane laura. yesterday he surveyed damage in lake charles, louisiana. the president toured a warehouse that is serving as a distribution point for relief supplies and held two roundtable meetings with those leading the recovery efforts. >> i want to thank the men and women of fema and the first responders, and the law enforcement, which we love, and we cherish, and doing a fantastic job, and don't get the

kind of recognition that they should get. >> the president has declared parts of both louisiana and texas as federal disaster areas, which freeze up grants and low-interest loans for residents and businesses. laura is blamed for at least 16 deaths. now to your voice, your vote. a brand new ipsos poll says the president didn't get much of a boost from the international convention while joe biden did from the dmc. bide-a farvelt rating of 45% after the convention. the president had 32%, but dropped to 31. the poll also found that president trump's speech at the rnc did little to change disapproval of his handling of the pandemic. 63% disapprove of his oversight of the public health crisis. new controversy pointed at the white house this morning as the trump administration is choosing to end all in-person

election security briefings to congress, just weeks of course or months before the presidential election. the top u.s. intelligence officer national intelligence director john ratcliffe sent letters to congress telling lawmakers they'll only be receiving written updates. he said this was to help ensure information is "not misunderstood or politicized." president trump said his administration got tired of sensitive information leaking. other lawmakers saying ending the briefs is an outrage and written updates are insufficient. coming up on "this week" chief white house correspondent jonathan karl goes one on one with secretary chad wolf. watch the full interview at 8:00 on abc 7. home of the l.a. lakers and clipper also serve as a voting center for the upcoming election. staples center open for voters to cast their ballot from october 30th through election day, november 3rd.

the downtown l.a. area will act as a vote by mail drop box location. the warriors home chase center is also planning to convert itself into a voting site, according to "the chronicle" details will be announced this coming week. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has a story from walnut creek. >> some insurance what we refer to as the twindemic of flu and covid season. >> reporter: as if the covid crisis isn't enough, state and local health officials are gearing up for another major threat, the upcoming flu season. >> symptoms are very similar. as a doctor, it will be hard to tell the difference. >> reporter: hospitals like john muir will test for both to determine best treatments. >> we have a few different testing platforms, two of which test mainly for just covid and then we have a third platform that we're increasing capacity of tests for covid, influenza

and the most common respiratory viruses. >> reporter: one area of concern, schools could make reopening decisions based on covid, only to be hit later by a surge in flu cases, although flu outbreaks alone don't normally cause school closures. >> we don't have polio today. we don't have smallpox today. we were able to prevent severe influenza infection. vaccinations have changed the whole scope of medical care. >> reporter: one bright spot the fact we're masking up for the coronavirus may help keep the spread of the flu in check. evidence from australia indicates all the coronavirus precautions stifled a major flu outbreak there. >> one of the suppositions was because of masking and social distancing, a supposition not proven but i think that makes a

school yesterday afternoon rows of people called for change. a black clothing owner said he felt profiled by police filling inventory at his store at 1:00 a.m. it sparked today's event which drew people of all ages and races. the show of activism offered more than a mental change. people got a workout. >> doing some inner work, starting off with physical movement. we pushed so much of this fitness and physical at spect. the more we can go inward and bring out our love and express that on the world here. >> a few counter protesters holding up signs at a nearby sidewalk. a fire in monterey county is forcing part of highway 1 to close. it's resulted in another economic punch for businesses already struggling due to the pandemic. big sur area restaurants usually crowded this time of year but now plenty of tables are

can just kind of make out this ridge, beginning to build in to the eastern pacific and that's going to shift our winds to a north/south gradient and eventually give us slightly better air quality for the week ahead as temperatures twaur s w. emeryville looks no color out there, 55 in san francisco. 06 in oakland. 51 in gilroy. 54 half moon bay. mt. tam the layering of the low clouds settling into the valley and we get into some mixing in the afternoon but northerly winds it's going to be a little bit different than the next several days. 53 santa rosa. 55 in napa with 57 in concord. the overall picture will be for us to get better air quality in the week ahead, but with that, we're paying the price with warmer temperatures, lower relative humidity and perhaps more challenging conditions for the firefighters. so areas of dense fog, mist and drizle this morni drizle this morning as the low

cloud deck settles closer to the ground. high pressure is pushing in on it. the smoke impacts continue with the spare the air alert and poor air quality around the bay but look at the summer heat building through the week ahead, it will stay comfortable at the shoreline though. current check of our air quality not so great up in napa. it is good, believe it or not in concord, in oakland and san jose, and just moderate from pleasanton, san francisco, into redwood city. so looking at that stable atmosphere, a lid on the atmosphere due to the inversion and high pressure building in, but we get those northerly winds in the upper elevations, so that should bring some of the smoke to the north bay and eventually push it offshore. 82 santa clara. 80 in sunnyvale today. kind of a nice afternoon, if you have some better air quality. 77 in redwood city. downtown 65. it's been in the low 60s and you can see the deck of low clouds allowing for the sunset and the richmond to stay gray. 82 petaluma.

vallejo in the 70s. looking at our east bay, hazy conditions, 75 for you today in hayward, with 78 in fremont. we go inland, upper 80s to near 90 from brentwood to antioch, with a little bit more sunshine for most, and some warmth coming into play inland. the accuweather seven-day forecast last day of the month, warming it up inland and by tuesday and wednesday, temperatures will continue to stay warm, low clouds and fog not totally disappearing from the coast, liz. we'll have that summer spread, although that wind shift will keep it challenging for the firefighters, so definitely watching that closely. >> for sure. lisa, thank you. his passing still so hard to comprehend, but next we look back at the incredible amount of positivity and inspiration chadwick boseman brought while he was here, coming up.
