building a better bay area for a safe and secure future. this is abc 7 news. chants and protests fill the streets of oakland again over the police shooting of jacob blake. but businesses say they're getting tired of cleaning up and have one thing for the group of protesters to consider as today supporters of president trump plan to use a bay area icon as their stage. good morning, i'm liz kreutz, thank you for joining us. a quick look at the weather, here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, liz. you have to be in the far east bay or south bay to get a little sun this morning. you also have a little haze. you can see the fog footprint over the bay. we'll change that, though. we still have a spare of air

alert. foggy conditions in the city. 55 at downtown san francisco. 66 in mat view. east bay hills camera,g low d deck reaching into the east bay. 54 san rafael. 62 in concord. visibility just over a mile in santa rosa, a half mile with the fog. air quality is poor by the delta, moderate air quality elsewhere. another spare the art alert allows for the smoke and haze to linger. but things will change for the week ahead and we'll warm up. >> lisa, thank you.nutes, liz. today's oakland a's game has been postponed because a member of the organization has tested positive for covid-19. that person has not been identified. the game was scheduled to be played in houston. the team says it has conducted testing and contact tracing for the entire traveling party.

he will self-isolate in houston with recommended safety precautions in place. we're seeing a weekend of protesters nationwide spawned by the shooting of jacob blake in kenosha, wisconsin. in oakland, opd says one officer was injured as they were forced to use tear gas as rocks and bottles were thrown and lasers pointed. abc 7 news reporter luz pena has the story. >> reporter: this is night three as oakland protesters demand justice for jacob blake, an african-american man shot seven times in the back by a wisconsin police officer leaving him paralyzed from the waist down and generating nationwide protests. oakland police reporting one of their officers was injured as the crowd threw rocks and bottles and pointed lasers at the officers. need to be

made with the police brutality against african-american males in this community. we're supportive of peaceful protesting. >> reporter: as the nice progression, many are afraid of history repeating itself, where smashed windows and fires were left behind. this woman is from the oakland african-american chamber of commerce and says small business owners are the ones picking up the broken glass and the bill. >> this serious business. don't come here vandalizing our city. >> reporter: truve is a prime example of these attacks. they've been vandalized three times since july. >> we still have to pay our rent and do all those things, now we have added damage, fixing graffiti. >> reporter: the damage will cost them $1,200 to fix. >> we have signage up to let people know, my husband is black and costa rican, i'm female, obviously, woman-owned, and it doesn't matter, they do not care. >> reporter: oakland police officers are declaring an

unlawful assembly failure to disper disperse, urging the crowd to leave or face possible arrest. >> the damage happening to small businesses is hurting the exact people that you want to help. >> reporter: in oakland, luz pena, abc 7 news. jacob blake's family led a peaceful justice for jacob march through kenosha, protesting systemic racism and police brutality. hundreds of protesters joined, demanding justice for theç 29-year-old father. blake's father talked about kyle rittenhouse,he 17-year-old who allegedly shot and killed two protesters last week. >> he took life. how will he be famous? infamously famous? they make a big deal out of scarface, right? he killed a lot of people, he's infamously famous. is that what we're talking about?

>> rittenhouse is charged with two count of homicide and another count of attempted homicide. the white house says president trump will visit kenosha on tuesday to meet with law enforcement and take a look at damage from recent protests. yesterday he praised the federal presence in wisconsin. >> we've had tremendous success, as you know, uh, we're finally able to get the go-ahead from the local ahorities to send in the national guard. we sent in the national guard. and within a few minutes of the guard, everybody cleared out and it became safe. >> the white house has not said if the president will meet with jacob blake's family during this trip. on friday his father said they had not heard from the white house about blake's shooting. developing overnight, investigating in portland one person shot and killed downtown while protests were taking place. at this time police say interclear if the two are connected. but they say that dueling demonstrations were being held

between supporters of president trump and black lives matter protesters. portland's local abc affiliate reports seeing clashes breaking out between the two groups. protesters have rallied in downtown portland every night for the past three months since the killing of george floyd by a police officer in minneapolis. happening today in san francisco, a rally in support of president trump. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge camera where president trump's supporters will be in about an hour from now. the walkaway campaign is organizing the event. the group says it encourages people to leave the democratic party of today. they plan to sail a fleet of boats from angel island to the golden gate bridge while others walk across the bridge. it starts at 10:00 this morning. as we talk about the pandemic, governor newsom's new guidelines will be ushered in, now based on four color-coded

tiers we've been talking about, purple meaning there is widespread transmission, down to yellow which is minimal. most of the bay area will start off purple. however, hair salons and barbershops along with malls will be able to open with limited indoor operations. keep in mind counties do have the final say and they can have stricter guidelines than the state. for example, san francisco is taking a slower approach. salons will only be able to open outdoors. now, meantime san francisco health leaders are accepting waiver applications this week for schools to be able to open for in-person learning. according to "the examiner," sfusd has not applied so far. only two waivers have been granted in the bay area so far. if you have questions about this new color coded system for reopening, we know it's a little confusing, things keep changes, you can just head to our website. we have an updated interactive map so you can see where your county stands, on abc7news.com.

lisa, we can see it's hazy out there. i was talking to some friends who say it's smoky as well in parts of the bay area. >> that will be with us for a while, liz. we'll get into slightly better air quality for the week ahead because we have a pattern shift in our weather. right now it looks pretty much the same, doesn't it, in emeryville, upper 50s to low 60s. it was only 66 yesterday in and around oakland. today we'll warm to the low to mid-70s. we're talking about away from th better air? next. >> it's hard for me to not choke up, you know, particularly somebody who you know. i look at this, if she hasn't have gotten out, she wouldn't have made it. >> a heartbreaking return to disaster. we talk with homeowners who say they lost everything in these wildfires. but hear how they're picking up the pieces. plus we have important info for those fire victims and other

turning now to the wildfires still raging in the bay area this morning, firefighters are making considerable progress on the lnu lightning complex. while it has burned more than 375,000 acres, containment is now up to 56%. some of the people who evacuated are returning home this weekend but abc 7 news reporter cnell barnard tells us in some cases that means coming back to rubble.3 >> reporter: jim farha is making a d return to his home. he knew his property and rv had been destroyed by the lnu complex fire. but seeing the damage up close

martinez found neighbors helping neighbors. >> reporter: nameighbors are coming together here to survive in bonny doon. this man offers his home for those in need. >> water and companionship, just a refuge. >> reporter: robertson's house is a refuge that runs by a generator. thatko fire didn't destroy it. one neighbor said being at his house allows them to escape the devastation. >> being able to get together at a place that resembles normalcy and hanging out with friends, is a very refreshing thing at the end of the day. >> we come around here to share information, a meal, some6 encouragement. >> reporter: these neighbors credit a network of people helping them get buy. >> we're fairly self-sufficient up here but there is a limit to all that. we need fuel to run our lights

and to charge our phones. >> reporter: robertson is grateful for the help and he's glad he can offer his home. >> it's good to have my home, but it's -- on the flip side, my neighbors are homeless. >> reporter: in bonny doon, lauren martinez, abc 7 news. firefighters say they're gaining containment on 588 square miles across seven counties including parts of alameda, contra costa and santa clara. containment stands at 50% up from 45% overnight. crews say winds are making it easier to fight the flames. tens of thousands of people evacuated from the lightning fires may qualify for insurance payouts.

>> reporter: the lnu complex fire forced evacuation from the area ranging from napa and sonoma counties to lake acounty. most will available return to their homes. homeowners can get reimbursed for the cost of the evacuation. >> you may have to stay in a hotel or having to buy food that you wouldn't have normally bought. >> reporter: janetruez says those living expenses are payable under the loss of use coverage of your homeowner's policy. keep all your receipts, then file your claim. just know there are limits. >> there may be a dollar amount cap. it doesn't mean you can head over to the ritz and get that covered. >> reporter: unfortunately others may discover their home has burned to the ground. amber magnus found the home she grew up in destroyed. >> i had a feeling.

had several days of quiet fire weather. that's going to change. we're getting into a big ridge of high pressure that's going to build into the bay area, creating challenging conditions for firefighters. this is typical of autumn, typical of september, and it looks like a prolonged pattern at that. live doppler 7 showing you what we really need is low clouds, fog, high relative humidity. but we also have the spomoke an we also have a shrinking marine layer in the days ahead. it's not going to disappear shoreline.but it will be we are looking at one element that is allowing for that to happen that's going to go away. it was an area of low pressure along the coast. high pressure is building in, creating the offshore flow, the ridge of high pressure pressing down on the atmosphere and making this less than about 800 feet in the coming week. certainly gray out there, 56

downtown. 61 in oakland. 67 mountain view with 50s on the coast. exploratorium camera, it's been cool in the city and along the shoreline with a lot of fog and the breeze in the afternoon, that's going to change as well. 57 napa, 66 by the delta. the visibility, the fog, half mile half moon bay. just over a mile in santa rosa. and some haze in napa and livermore. we are look at the air quality, which has been pretty good this morning. you can see it's moderate in oakland and pleasanton. another spare the air alert today. the reason we're not having it for the week ahead is because of the high pressure ridge pushing in pushing the smoke out to sea. ars of mist and drizzle this morning. looking at the smoke impacting us for poor air quality once again today. summer-like heat arrives as we get into the week ahead. check out the winds, they're out

while filming some of his most famous roles. >> in my culture, death is not the end. it's more of a stepping-open point. >> reporter: the actor's private four-year battle now sparking conversations about a disease that disproportionately affects black men. blacks have the highest rates of colorectal cancer than any racial/ethnic group in the u.s. >> there may be some biological factors but certainly accesso c one issue that's preventible. >> reporter: dr. timothy cannon is an oncologist tha well. >> there's so much information that we need to get out there to really help avoid the situation we saw with chadwick boseman. >> reporter: dr. cannon says that starts with paying attention to symptoms including change in bowel habits, bleeding, abdominal pain, and unintended weight loss. these signs are because younger patients with

colorectal cancer tend to be diagnosed at a more advanced stage. >> i felt like i didn't want this to -- i was in denial. >> reporter: timothy mitchell was 43 when he was diagnosed. he says by summer he'lr had be feeling tired, slow. he went back to the hospital. >> they did aol mass. >> reporter: timothy was stage 3, the same stage as boseman when he was diagnosed. he underwent 12 rounds of chemo. today he and his wife dedicate their efforts to breaking down the stigma among black men. >> if you're not paying attention to your body, your life can end sooner than you want it to. >> reporter: thetting screened cancer at age 45 but boseman was just 43. dr. cannon says while the overall numbers for the disease are going down, the instances of it appearing in men under the

following the protesting of the shooting of jacob black. he was shot seven times in the back and his family says he is now paralyzed. abc news reporter alex presha has more. >> reporter: calls for justice echoing once again after the kenosha police union released a statement disputing the department ofsl justice's statement about what led to the shooting. however, authorities have not releas many details in the case, d it's unclear whether the police chief will release new information. the new developments come as blake recovers in the hospital, paralyzed from the waist down. and until friday, handcuffed to his bed, allegedly under armed guard, because of a previous warrant. meanwhile, the investigation continues into the 17-year-old charged with killing two demonstrators and injuring a

third. newly obtained video by abc news appears to show kyle rittenhouse being chased by at least one man after the teenager allegedly shot a demonstrator. his attorney says he had no choice but to fire multiple rounds his immediate attackers because he feared for his life. questions are being raised why he was not arrested by police. jacob blake's father reacted to his son's shootingfriday's march on washington. >> i'm tired of cameras and seeing these young black and brown people suffer. >> reporter: alex presha, abc news, washington. the home of the l.a. lakers and clippers will serve as a voting center for the upcoming election. staples center will be open for voters to cast their ballotl fm october 30 through election day, november 3.

boise state has suspended individual students and three fraternities for holding parties. trevor ault, abc news, new york. according to "the examiner," enrollment at city college of san francisco droppem last fall. a spokesperson says it's because of the, quote, uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and the challenges with distance learning. san francisco state saw a decrease of 8% this fall. the pandemic is also affecting housing at sf state. only 364 students are living on campus out of 4,500 available beds. okay, still ahead on "abc 7 mornings," smoke from the wildfires is still affecting our air quality. the effort to protect the health of postal workers who are continuously outside. and here is a live look there from our abc 7 roof cam looking out over thembidge. we're talking about that smoke, you can still smell it where we are in the city.

feet. a ridge of high pressure will put pressuren the atmosphere, shrink the marine layer, dry out the air, lighten the winds, but change the direction to a drying component. here is a look at mt. tam where you can see right now it's nothing but fog, right? 56 in the city, 61 in oakland, 54 on the coast. to the east bay, it's haze and it's fog here with 54 in santa rosa in the north bay. low 70s by the delta. we've got a warm-up there with low 60s, concord and livermore. so changes are coming today, kind of subtle. but as we start out, y notice that the visibility is reduced. santa rosa, novato, half moon bay. then as we get into the bay here, still some fog over in oakland and four-mile visibility with that haze over in the east bay. that's where the hair quality is moderate to pleasanton. right now it's pretty good in concord and oakland. napa's not doing great. another spare the air alert today. look at san rafael, doesn't look

good, does it? that's fog and also some smoke in there. mist and drizzlex along the to poor air quality. tomorrow, as the ridge builds, it may push the ridge offshore but it will also dry things out which is not good. that's what always happens come september and october. up here, upper elevation ke a b but look at the direction. it's out o northeast. that will build as we get into tomorrow night into tuesday. so that's our big push of an offshore flow. and then again, by the end of the upcoming workweek. so any fog we see today pulls back to the coast. and it's going to be with us again tomorrow for the next several days. shrink, though. it's going to be confined to the shoreline. so we will have that summer spread. the temperatures ranging 25 to 30 degrees valleys. but today, it starts with the subtle warming trend of four to six degrees perhaps inland with

neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor hail shall keep the post men from their appointed rounds. smoke can be added to the list as california wildfires continue to burn. but there are concerns as letter carriers spend up to 12 hours a day delivering mail when the air quality is poor. >> within an hour, we canincrear respiratory, cardiac problems. >> reporter: most mail trucks don't have air conditioning and have a large window that remains open for carriers to have easy access to mailboxes. the wife of a south bay postal worker who did not want to be identified wrote to us saying, there are no indoor restaurants open where they can go to get relief from the smoke during a meal period. our government is trying to protect firefighters, police, hospital workers, but no one is looking out for the health of our postalworkers. abc 7 news spoke with usps district officials who say they recently received 20,000 n95 masks that are now available to all letter carriers who request
