for a safe and secure future. this is abc7 news. >> all of a sudden the flames jumped over the ridge and were facing us. >> weeks after wildfires forced them to flee, some families in the north bay are returning home and businesses are reopening. but the road to recovery is far from over. hello, thank you for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. the lnu lightning complex burning in five north bay counties is now 56% contained. flames burned more than 375,000 acres. today cal fire reduced evacuation orders to warnings. the series of lightning sparked fires is blamed for five deaths and destroying more than 1,200 buildings since they broke out nearly two weeks ago. now, the walbridge fire in sonoma county was one fire in

that complex. survivors are trying to recoup and regroup this weekend. local assistance centers are hoping to help and as evacuation orders are lifted, residents are returning home. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard joins us live in guerneville with more on this story. cornell? >> hi, dion. last week downtown guerneville was totally empty. the walbridge fire was getting close. that's all changed now. people are back and a lot of folks are getting a helping hand who need it. >> our house survived and that's just -- was a miracle. >> pamela came to this new local assistance center at healdsburg high school looking for help. >> i applied for fema assistance. >> her home was safe, but four outbuilding burned. housing props and costumes from her longtime career as a stilt walker. >> all of my costumes from 1987 are gone. so yeah.

>> this center, a one-stop shop for recovery assistance. >> a lot of people are still processing what's happening and we still have ongoing evacuation orders. and so folks haven't even been able to find out if their homes are necessarily impact. >> there's hugh. next to hugh is molly. >> she's still unsure if the walbridge fire damaged her home. >> not nothing where i'm going and what i'm doing, it's very confusing. >> in guerneville , this assistance center is now set up for residents at the bank of america. this town is coming back to life now that most evacuation orders have been lifted and fire danger has passed. >> a lot of people are excited about they're back and we're open. >> restaurants and shops are reopening and customers are back. >> we kind of heard this was some closures going on, so we wasn't sure but we saw cars coming back, so we figured, okay, let's take a drive down

this way. >> guerneville residents are resilient and thankful to those who protected the community. >> we're grateful to the 50s and first responders. they saved this town and this place. >> hol assistance centers will be open through next friday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. live in guerneville, cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> thanks, cornell. let's check the progress being made against two other fires. right now, the czu lightning complex, evacuation orders remain in san mateo counties. lightning strikes sparked the fires two weeks ago. here's the latest on the scu lightning complex that burned across parts of five counties. it has charred 377,000 acres. those fires are 50% contained. as the fires continue to

burn, the air quality in the bay area has still been poor. taking a live look outside as we speak, and you can certainly tell things are a little thick in the atmosphere. abc7 news meteorologist drew tuma joining us now with the latest on the spare the air alert. >> the alerts have been extended until tuesday. we find the air quality is not improving all that much over the next couple of days, so we will still find times the air quality is on the poor side. the exploratorium camera, haze in the atmosphere. tomorrow will remain on the poor side thanks to smoke again coming from fires around the area, especially in northern california. we'll take a closer look at the air quality and we'll find warmer weather on the horizon in the accuweather forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks. don't forget you can follow

fires statewide with our fire tracker app. it has the latest information from cal fire. you can also find air quality data for where you live. the abc7 fire tracker is available now at abc7news.com and the abc7 app. conservatives and liberals faced off during a protest on the golden gate bridge today. conservative activists group walk away organized a president trump flotilla and demonstration. anti-trump demonstrators also showed up. both sides had a mostly nonviolent but fiery debate. some trump supports at the rally say they were attacked by counterprotesters. we saw officers detain a few people. rally organizers blame liberals for vandalism at protests. >> we're here to say we're not giving you permission to cause damage and destruction. >> i'm here because trump is dangerous. and we have to stand up and save it. >> walk away said it encouraged

all groups to attend the rally and engage in a respectful discussion about america's challenges. oakland police say six people were arrested saturday after the third night of protests in response to the police shooting of jacob blake in kenosha, wisconsin. just about 100 marchers took to the streets in oakland's grand lake neighborhood last night. police say some pelted officers with rocks and bottles and some even pointed lasers at them. one officer was injured. oakland business owners who've been targeted by vandals say they understand the purpose of the protests but said the vandalism hurts them. >> changes in policy need to be made with the police brutality against the african-american males in this community, so definitely we're supportive of peaceful protesting. >> an oakland wellness center says they've been hit three times by vandals since july. president trump will visit kenosha, wisconsin, on tuesday to meet with law enforcement in that community. it's not clear if he'll be meeting with jacob blake or his

family. this morning the president liked a twitter thread that started with kyle rittenhouse as a good example of why i decided to vote for trump, rittenhouse is the tenager facing homicide charges for allegedly killing two protesters and injuring another during events in kenosha last week. this morning the acting head of homeland security says violence in american cities needs to stop. >> if you're going to protest, first amendment right, do that peacefully. once you cross the line to defense, that's concerning to the department of homeland security. we have to make sure we bring any type of violence to a close. >> the biden campaign says the democratic candidate will reveal a plan this week to address the ongoing unrest. the a's had to call off their game today because of coronavirus. coming up, what we know about who tested positive. the clock is ticking for state lawmakers to pass a new eviction moratorium tomorrow. several hurdles it has to go

california is poised to become the first state in the u.s. to reach 700,000 covid-19 cases. state numbers show california has just more than 699,900 confirmed cases, the fifth highest number in the world just behind russia. there are more than 84,000 cases here in the bay area. the u.s. has the most confirmed infections of any nation in the world with 5.9 million according to johns hopkins data.

covid-19 is -- >> i'm sorry. >> my apologies. i'll go ahead. covid-19 has led to the postponement of today's oakland a's game in houston. in a statement this morning, the a's says an unnamed member of the organization tested positive for covid-19. the team says they have conducted testing and contact tracing and will self-isolate in houston. covid-19 has also led to game postponements for the st. louis cardinals, marlins, as well as the cincinnati reds. you'll hear from the a's general manager later on in sports. major shift tomorrow in california's rod california's road to governor newsom's new guidelines go into effect on monday. counties will be sorted into four color-coded tears. most of the bay area will start

a tribute to "black panther" star chadwick boseman was displayed last night in oakland's grand lake theater. it was organized by activists and displayed during a blm march. fans across the world are mourning boseman. the tweet announcing his death is the most liked tweet of all time with more than 7.2 million likes. >> he was a true hero, a true definition of role model. >> wakanda forever. this guy gave the world a superhero anyone could admire, bu especially people of color. >> it was really impactful. it kind of hurt a different way. it's the first black superhero. >> this role not only inspired an entire generation of movie viewers, it gave us an ability to dream. >> boseman was 43. he died after a year's long battle with colon cancer. ryan coogler made an emotional statement on the passing of chadwick boseman. kugler says he wasn't privy to the details of his illness because he was deeply rooted in his privacy. another portion of the statement reads, he lived a beautiful life and he made a great art. day after day, year after year, that was who he was. he was an epic firework display. i will tell stories about being there for some of the most brilliant sparks till the end of my days. what an incredible mark he's left for us. coogler adds he spent the last year writing "black panther" 2. no word on the progress of that now. you can watch "black panther" at 8:00 p.m. commercial-free. disney, which owns marvel, is the parent company of abc7. >> now your accuweather forecast with drew tuma.

our air quality issues continue for another day. we will find smoke lingering in our skies over the next 48 hours. a spare the air day has been extended through tuesday of the upcoming week. live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you fog bumped up along the coastline. otherwise we're dealing with hazy sunshine. where's always smoke coming from. i want to show you the satellite over northern california today. a lot of the smoke today is coming from fires in northern california outside of the bay area and mendocino county, butte county, where you see the smoke over chico getting pushed to the west and then down along the coast into the bay area. that is the source of a lot of smoke today. that's likely still the source of the smoke coming tomorrow as well. so current air quality, you can see the worst air quality at this hour is in napa and redwood city where it is unhealthy for

sensitive groups. most other areas from san ralph to concord to oakland to san jose dealing with moderate air quality. you can see the city right now is dealing with good air quality thanks to a sea breeze that has kicked up and is freshening the air over san francisco. but the air quality on average, again, we talk about it fluctuating hour to hour, but on average over the next two days it will remain poor with smoke pouring into our atmosphere from fires that are currently burning. so a spare the air day has been extended into tuesday for the next two days because of that poor air quality. now, numbers right now, it's really not too hot. temperatures slightly below average for this time of year. 50s along the coast. our warmest spots only in the low to mid-80s at this hour. the big difference, our marine layer is getting compressed. we'll find a lot less fog around the bay shoreline. numbers in the upper 50s overnight tonight. tomorrow morning first thing we will find some patchy fog along

with coast. but with limited fog first thing in america. tomorrow afternoon will be a little bit warmer. so tomorrow a couple degrees warmer compared to today. we'll see 60s and 70s mainly around the bay shore line. it's likely that our hottest spots will touch about 90 or 92 degrees, which is pretty much average for this time of the year. the accuweather seven-day forecast, a slight warming trend tomorrow and tuesday, the spare the air days. we dip midweek for the but for the holiday weekend, numbers take off. by sunday we're calling it september heat. for labor day monday, we're finding temperatures above average. >> all right. drew, thank you. chris alvarez now with a look at sports. hi, chris. >> hi, dion. coming up, one day hateful trade deadline, the giants go for a series win in arizona. plus for the second time in a in
