the shocking death of "black panther" star chadwick boseman is drawing new attention to the grim reality that more young people are getting diagnosed with colon cancer. and now doctors fear the pandemic will result in even more cases. here's abc7 news reporter kate larsen. ♪ played the tambourine so well ♪ >> reporter: on friday, after a years' long battle, "black panther" star chadwick boseman died from colon cancer. he was 43 years old. >> it definitely hit home for me. especially his age and everything. >> reporter: fremont resident joe perry is 44. he has been fighting colorectal cancer for three years. >> it metastasized into my liver. that's where it is now. >> reporter: like boseman, perry, an award winning photojournalist has been working most of his treatment. in recent years the disease is affecting young people at much higher rates and people of color seem to be at risk with much

higher outcomes. >> we have dozens of people under the age of 35 with colon cancer. >> reporter: dr. allen vinook treats men and women as young as 20 with no risk factors. >> we've got marathoner, you've got a triathlete, even though it's decreasing in the older population, it appears to be increasing in the younger population. and this is not good news. >> reporter: how are you and other colon cancer experts responding to boseman's death? are you going to change your approach in any way now that you've kind of got everyone's attention? >> younger peoples with symptoms, like bowel symptoms, diarrhea or blood in their stool may be at greater risk for colon cancer than they thought. more importantly, the physicians, the primary care doctors need to think of getting it earlier than they normally would. >> reporter: because of the pandemic people are delaying their cancer screens which doctors fear could lead to a spike in colon cancer. perry was diagnosed in 2017 after he visited his doctor to

employees died from the virus. the united farm workers union says foster farms did not comply with earlier orders to close. the union is threatening to boycott the company. in the east bay, a protest is planned for tomorrow morning over the removal of an old tree from a pleasanton park. the city says the eucalyptus at lions wayside park has an incurrable sulfur fungus and needs to go because it's a safety hazard. it's not clear how long the tree has been in the park, but some people say it dates back to the 1880s. residents plan on showing up at the park between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. now your accuweather forecast with sandhya patel. >> good evening, everyone. let's take a look at a satellite picture from earlier today. take a look at all that smoke coming in from the wildfires to our north, to our east. we're also seeing smoke from the bay area fires. you combine that with the fog, and it was just a very hazy day. i do have some good news for you.

here is a look at the smoke forecast. tomorrow morning, not so great. still smoke settling in across the region. but watch what happens as the breeze picks up. tomorrow evening, the air quality will begin to improve as we head into wednesday. it certainly looks like we will see some better air quality, even though it's not going to be perfect. it's better than what we experienced today. so that's just a look at what's to come. tomorrow's air quality will be poor. so a spare the air alert remains up due to the smoke from the wildfires. wednesday we go to yellow, with moderate air quality you see on your right. now conditions for the firefighters. looking good tonight. light winds near the lnu lightning complex fire. 63 degrees. relative humidity is up there at 70%. 75 degrees right now. 49% humidity. winds are light near the hennessey fire. as we take a look at the woodward fire, it is really just misty and drizzly. south wind 10 to 12, cool 52 degrees. and one last stop, czu lightning

complex also cool with the humidity up into the 72% range. very light winds. so hopefully those containment numbers continue to increase on the fire lines. live doppler 7 showing the fog along the coast. it's uhugging the coastline tonight. temperatures from the 50s to the 60s across the region. a few 70s up to our north from our exploratorium camera. we have the fog in. the marine layer is healthy around 1400, 1500 deep. here is a look at what you can expect. smoke, fog and patchy morning drizzle. poor air quality again tomorrow. and heating up again for labor day. so we've had a nice break. today's temperatures were from 3 to 8 degrees below average for this time of year. tomorrow morning, starting you off with the patchy drizzle along the coastline at 5:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m. as well. if you are communicating, watch out. the smoke along with the fog and the drizzle could make for some tough conditions on the roadways, especially with reduced visibility. tomorrow afternoon, fog holds near the coast. the rest of you will be seeing hazy sunshine. morning temperatures will be in the 50s, 60s.
