firefighter has died helping to battle the august complex fire in the mendocino national forest. she has been identified as diana jones, a firefighter with the crescent fire department near fort worth texas. it happened yesterday near the mepd seeno national forest. jones and her son were in california working with a private contractor when she was involved in a vehicle accident. >> i guess they must have enjoyed it. they've been going up there for several years so this time of year we always miss them when they go off up there, and they always come back only this time i guess she's not coming back. >> jones posted this image from the fire zone to show what it looked like. we want to check in with abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. >> and as we take a look at the conditions right now we're going to check out live doppler 7 because this isdritical in the fight against these fires. a fog right along the coast already pushing into the north bay. we've had favorable conditions

for the firefighters, cooler than average conditions. today higher humidity and light winds, that's what we're facing tonight, so that should help the crews out there. 57 degrees, 87% humidity near the walbridge fire. 70 degrees, 64% relative humidity in that general vicinity. we look at the woodward fire and it is completely saturated. it is misty, drizzly, 55 degrees, south-southwest wind which is going to bring that onshore push of higher humidity in through the area through the night. as we look at the czu lightening complex 57 degrees, west-northwest wind up to 5 gusting right now. air quality still being impacted by the spare the air alert ex10ed for the next four days. i'll be back with a look at the smoke forecast coming right up. >> in the south bay as the complex fires continue to burn parts of the bay area santa

clara county leaders, local researchers and fire officials are looking for a better way to respond to the ongoing threat of fire incidents. amanda? >> reporter: ama, as it stands santa clara county sits between two major complex fires. we're talking about the czu and scu. so tonight we're taking a closer look how several in the south bay plan to improve wildfire response and resources. the massive complex fires burning around the bay area have become some of the largest in state history. more reason improved research, response and resources are so necessary. >> it's not a whose fault is it, it's really a what do we do now, how do we sfep up, what resources do we need, who has them, how quickly can we implement. >> officials met tuesday.

they're considering how the county's fire department can best fight and suppress the ever increasing large scale fire incidents in the county and throughout california. >> these go from local events to regional events to multi-state events relatively quickly. >> reporter: the idea would be to focus on technology, response and risk sjsu launched the nation's largest wildfire research center bringing together faculty members and millions of dollars in new tech. >> the main thing was to build a team with different expertise and new technologies to the problem. >> reporter: the team will use academic tuesday help predict and better understand wildfires. >> for example, we now are operating a advanced wildfire pretick system that takes wildfire information and weather information, and it allows us to forecast how wildfires create their own weather and how that

impacts fire spread. >> reporter: a relatively new year old radar system will also allow them to look into radar loops. >> those can now adjusted into our forecasting system in realtime so we can better predict fire behavior and fire spread in the future and smoke dispersion and dice transports. >> it's research already being applied to today's wildfire response. >> we've already sent the model forecast, the realtime system out to some cal fire folks who are managing some of the fires in the bay area right now. >> now, clement, says the goal is to help provide a better understanding of wildfire management and expertise and biology, mechanical engineering and environmental studies. the national park service released this video today to

across the country. here in california last night lawmakers passed 5 of the 7 pieces of legislation aimed to change how police operate. activists say the one bill that could have done the most died before going up for a vote. james birch has been fighting for sb 731, a bill that would have created a way to strip badges from officers found to have committed serious misconduct. california is one of five states without a way to decertify bad acting police. >> there are officers who then go take up at another law enforcement division somewhere else. >> reporter: peace officers research office of california is happy the bill didn't pass. in a statement they told abc 7 news while they support the spirit and intent of sd 731 it reached far beyond the police licensing process and includes

one count each. after he sent 20 letters to santa clara officer dr. sarah cody between april and july that were aggressive, offensive and threatening in nature. >> they were veiled threats essentially aimed at ending the health official's life. >> reporter: he said some of the letters also made reference to the -- movement. >> far right wing anti-government, anti-establishment, anti-law enforcement, pro-gun. loosely organized group. >> reporter: upon a search of his home investigators say they found 138 firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition. he initially posted bail after his arrest last week, but yesterday the sheriff's office filed a gun violence restraining order, the same day a judge remanded him back into custody where he's now being held without bail. today he appeared in court alongside his new attorney who says it appears his clients first amendment rights are being

until those firefighters completely get those fires out. as you take a look at the air quality right now it is encoura. an improvement from what we've seen in days past as we look at fremont, san jose in the yellow which is moderate air quality. and for the santa cruz mountains it is green. unfortunately the spare the air alert has to be extended at least for the next two days and we're still going to be impacted from the smoke from the wildfires at least a few days from time to time. friday, saturday, now the air district is saying moderate air quality. here's a look at the smoke forecast. tomorrow morning smoke settles, caught up in the marine inversion, which is pretty healthy tonight. as we head into the evening hours it improves a little bit. and we go back into thursday and this is when i think by thursday evening we may see some bluer skies than we've seen in days past. live doppler 7 right now showing you the fog around the bay and coastline as we look at those
