disappointed would be an understatement. the university of south carolina reporting that more than 1,000 students have covid-19 and at the university of georgia, nearly 800 students tested positive for covid-19 last week. at indiana university bloomington, 30 of the school's 40 greek houses are now under quarantine because of the virus and are being asked to halt in-person activities outside of dining and housing for the next two weeks. across the country on arizona state university's tempe campus more than 300 students are isolating following a rise in confirmed cases. >> we need to shut down campus immediately because of the rising covid cases. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci warning those colleges with outbreaks not to send students home, saying that it's the worst thing they could do because they could continue spreading it at home. overnight we learned one of hollywood's toughest stars, dwayne "the rock" johnson has covid-19, so does his entire family and thankfully says they're all recovering and, of

course, it's the rock so he said they're coming out stronger. >> much more on dwayne johnson's battle with covid in our next hour. tom? >> amy, thank you. turning now to the presidential campaign, and with the election 61 days away president trump now threatening to restrict federal funds from democratic run cities like new york city, d.c., seattle and portland claiming officials allowed lawless protests. mary bruce is in washington tracking it all and, mary, there is so much reaction to this this morning. >> reporter: tom, leaders of these cities say this is a new low. they are calling this a blatant political ploy intended to go after the president's democratic rivals and distract, they say, from the devastating pandemic. the stunning move this morning is now expected to face stiff legal opposition. a political move that is certain to be challenged in court. overnight, president trump ordering officials to find ways to cut federal funding to he claims local leaders have allowed places like new york

city, washington, d.c., seattle and portland to descend into, quote, anarchy during protests for racial justice. trump tweeting, my administration will do everything in its power to prevent weak mayors and lawless cities from taking federal dollars while they let anarchists harm people, burn buildings and ruin lives and businesses. we're putting them on notice today. new york governor andrew cuomo outraged calling it a political stunt. >> he better have an army if he thinks he's going to walk down the street in new york. he can't have enough bodyguards to walk through new york city. >> reporter: the move would jeopardize billions of dollars in aid that could be used to help recover from the pandemic. trailing in the polls, the president has been eager to change the subject casting himself as the law and order candidate. >> i am your president of law and order. >> reporter: but his opponent, joe biden, says trump is only making the unrest across the country worse. >> i wouldn't incite violence. i'd condemn it when it occurred. >> reporter: in his first campaign trip to the key state

of wisconsin today, biden will visit with the family of jacob back by police, something trump did not do when he was in wisconsin earlier this week. >> we got to heal. we got to put things together, bring people together and so my purpose in going will be to do just that. >> reporter: when asked if the officer involved should be charged -- >> i think we should let the judicial system work its way. i do think there's a minimum need to be charged. >> reporter: campaigning in north carolina wednesday -- the president who has been baselessly sowing doubt about mail-in voting, suggesting voters vote twice which is illegal. >> let them send it in and go vote and if their system is as good as they say it is, then obviously they won't be able to vote. if it isn't tabulated they'll be able to vote. that's the way it is. that's what they should do. >> reporter: under the battleground states' law convincing another person to vote twice is also a felony.

the attorney general then trying to explain. >> it seems to me what he's saying is he's trying to make the point that the ability to monitor this system is not good, and if it was so good, if you tried to vote a second time, you would be caught if you voted in person. >> reporter: now, both candidates are stepping up their campaigning but in starkly different ways. take a look at this. joe biden yesterday speaking with reporters maintaining a strict social distance while the president was in north carolina greeting his supporters who were tightly packed in standing shoulder to shoulder most without masks. the president, though, kept his distance. t.j.? >> all right. mary bruce for us this morning. thank you so much. we want to turn now to the outrage over that disturbing new body cam footage. it shows police pinning down daniel prude, a black man whose family called 911 for help. .e would later die at the the new video is now prompting protesters to again take to the streets and demand justice for his death. diane macedo joins us now with the latest on this

investigation. diane, good morning. >> reporter: t.j., good morning to you. daniel prude was killed two months before george floyd. now the new york state attorney general says her office is still investigating as we see body cam footage of the incident, and i have to warn viewers this can be hard to watch. overnight outrage growing from newly released body cam video showing police officers pinning down an unarmed naked man until he stops breathing. protesters in rochester demanded the officers involved face charges. >> that was a full-fledged ongoing murder, cold blooded. >> reporter: the man in the video is daniel prude. his family says they called 911 on march 23rd to get help for the 41-year-ina ntal health crisis. in the video police approach prude who is naked on a snowy rochester street. >> are you daniel? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: prude initially appears to obey the officer's

commands and they handcuff him. he is then heard shouting at officers, at times spitting before they cover his face with a white hood. minutes later the officers pin him to the ground. video shows one officer holding prude's head down for more than two minutes as his yells become whimpers, and then he appears to stop breathing. paramedics on the scene attempted cpr and they took him to a hospital where he died seven days later. the medical examiner says prude's death was a homicide ruling he died by complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint, excited deliria and pcp. the investigation is ongoing. >> any time you have a custody in death it's serious. >> reporter: he admitted him to the hospital that very same day but he was released just hours later. he says all he wanted for his brother was help. >> all right. so sad. diane macedo, thank you. well, now to that travel alert for labor day weekend as

so many americans are set to hit the road or the skies for a final sendoff to a summer. gio benitez is at laguardia airport with more on all of that. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, amy. good morning. the pandemic is making it very hard to make any travel predictions. take a look. for the fourth of july this year, 3 million people got on a plane. memorial day weekend, you see it right there, 2 million. that is a lot less than last year, but for this holiday weekend, experts say more people will be hitting the road instead of taking to the skies, and where are they going? according to the travel planning company, tripit, florida is this year's top choice for labor day. orlando, tampa and ft. lauderdale, very popular. phoenix is also a top pick. all of this despite the covid cases in arizona and florida. the caribbean and mexico also getting a lot of attention, but if you are traveling by road this weekend, just keep in mind traffic is getting a lot busier so just be sure to give yourself some extra time, amy. >> that makes sense. taking to the skies obviously safety is a huge issue and you

plane, came down with a crippling illness and has been in a coma ever since but now the germans say they know what happened to him. this morning, russian opposition leader alexei navalny in a serious condition after germany revealed he has been poisoned. according to the german government, navalny was attacked with a deadly nerve agent from the novichok group. now german chancellor angela merkel calling the poisoning an attempted murder. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: one of russian president vladimir putin's fiercest critics, navalny fell ill on a flight from siberia to moscow. passengers on the flight recording sounds of moaning. capturing this video of navalny being rushed off the plane and to the hospital. later moved to germany, doctors discovered he was attacked with the same type of military chemical weapon used in the poisoning of former russian double agent, sergei skripal in 2018.

to 52 giant helium-filled balloons. it was his first live stunt in years with more than 6 million views and counting. abc's matt gutman joins us with more on all that. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning. and this was the stunt that david blaine says he always wanted to pull off and it's pretty much what every kid incl but this feat wasn't nearly as easy as just grabbing balloons and floating off into the sky because blaine had to become an faa certified commercial hot air balloon pilot, a skydiver and he spent the past two years perfecting what he called his most ambitious performance yet. it took 52 giant helium balloons to get him up and gravity to bring him back down to the arizona desert floor. in his first major live event in more than a decade, the illusionist soaring more than 4.5 miles in the air and hoisted ng, .l tselo was a scene lifted

>> reporter: blaine dedicating it to his own kid, 9-year-old dessa right there by his side as he took off. as he floated off into the stratosphere, the temperature dropping into the single digits. the air dangerously thin, available oxygen only at about half the amount at sea level putting him in a serious risk. >> hypoxia is when you don't get enough oxygen because you go too high. you have no idea what you're doing so you're completely foggy. it's like you're drunk. >> reporter: as he keeps climbing blaine is communicating with his ground team including dessa. >> how many feet do you think you'll go up? >> we're at 16,000 now. >> yeah. >> and we're probably going to go up to where the airplanes go. >> reporter: as he climbs to nearly a jet's cruising altitude, the oxygen shortage hits. >> can you see it? it's at 95.

>> reporter: blaine finally pulling his oxygen tank out trying to get his wits about him for the most dangerous part, coming back down. finally almost an hour after he took off, as he reaches 24,900 feet, he gets the signal, releases the safety and plummets at over 125 miles an hour. >> whoo! >> reporter: for a minute straight he freefalls towards the earth, then pulls that parachute cord and came down in a gallop almost deliriously happy. >> is he there? yes! >> wow. that was awesome! >> reporter: and for the flight back to go see his daughter dessa, this time he actually took a helicopter. >> that was actually beautiful from top to bottom. >> reporter: luke aikens who helped him prepare and talked him through it while in the air

revealing just how hard it was to get this right. >> an event that requires weather to be perfect, wind has to be perfect. everything has to line up. there's no stop and start. all live for everyone to see. >> reporter: such an incredibly complex stunt and made more so because so much could go wrong and it was complicated by the fact that originally blaine apparently wanted to try it without a parachute. but the basic idea of a human grabbing a bunch of balloons and floating right off into space, well, that just made for an uplifting story. sorry, guys, i had to do that dad joke. i've been planning it. >> thank you for that. thank you for that, matt. >> yeah. >> i don't know if t.j. is thanking you for that. >> it's fine, okay, i think i did that when i was 6. no, i'm kidding. it was incredible. we want to turn to traveling in the skies if you want to go by plane and not balloon for the labor day weekend. according to the tsa nearly a million more people flew in august than in july and with more passengers, of course, that means less space to socially distance so we conducted a little experiment gauge how many people are actually wearing masks in the airports.

>> reporter: to find out if passengers are bearing face coverings at airports while traveling we did an experiment. producers visiting the tickets areas at miami international airport, new york's laguardia and atlanta's hartsfield jackson. in one hour in a single spot we counted to see how many people were wearing masks correctly, incorrectly or not at all. what did we find? at miami international airport we counted 302 passengers wearing face coverings, 8 not wearing one properly covering their nose and 9 not wearing one at all. at new york's laguardia we saw 207 passengers wearing masks, 27 wearing one incorrectly and 16 with no mask. and at atlanta's hartsfield jackson, the busiest airport in mo people were wearing masks we but some just weren't wearing them correctly. >> it's very important to cover that nose, isn't it? >> absolutely. we inhale through our noses and

theaters. a aion blockbusters have been raking in millions at the box office overseas. two of the dhars are with us, sir kenneth branagh and elizabeth debicki. both joining us live. thanks for being here. let's start with, if you read a lot of reviews a lot are scratching their head because of the plot of the movie. i'll give you a chance, elizabeth. you explain exactly what is this movie about? >> it's the million dollar question. i would say this film, the way i describe it is i say we follow the protagonist who is played by john david washington, brill plantly and we follow him on a mission to save the world and the nature of the mission is to do with tim the concept of time and who can manipulate it and control it and that's sort of the center of the film.

if that classifies. >> actually does make sense. >> i'm following it. so if john david washington is the protagonist might be safe to say, kenneth, you're the antagonist and christopher nolan told you your character was bhavengly unredeemable. what was that like to play? >> it was -- well, it was great. it was very releasing. he's fantastically flayful. it is a big espionage movie. you get a badder than "breaking bad"die. he said i want you not to look for anything good. i don't want you to fine the humidity. he needs to be bad all the way through so the threat the audience get excited about is there all the way through to the end of the movie. that's what i tried to do. >> the movie looks great but also looks very intense and, elizabeth, i know you and kenneth had intense scenes and had this sort of funny game you would play to keep things light. it involved singing? >> yeah, well, ken and i, our

this is much better than what we brought to talk about. kenneth, one thing, though, back to acting, we did have john david washington on earlier this week. he said one of the finest pieces of acting he's ever seen when you were having to do lines backwards with a russian accent. how did you pull that off? >> with great difficulty, but it's fun. you know, it's very entertaining living life backwards and spill a lot of coffee but you do get to save the world. >> we are such fans. i know you both have big roles coming up and, elizabeth, you'll play princess diana in the final two seasons of "the crown." how daunting was that? >> when peter morgan asked me to do it i was quite overwhelmed but i've had a little bit of time to process it now and i think that i'm actually just incredibly excited to do it and she's such an incredibly important figure. she was such a remarkable human

it was not foreign policy. it wasn't trade. head-to-head is a little bit of an exaggeration. everyone had a different idea, different color idea and i had a strong sense that red was important. it's basically there's a piece of red cloth or something red behind every famous presidential portrait. lincoln, washington and the white house and it had a sense of kind of imagine industry and of tradition but it also felt that it was just about a certain kind of fashion and vitality that is essential for leadership. he allowed me my choice. >> this is a book coming out during the middle of a campaign season but not a political book. what do you hope people take away from it. >> you look at the white house from, you know, george bush, from clinton from the obamas and now into this presidency, you think it's the same. the white house is static and n unchanging and the reality isdo. it does aestheticalin of at kind of beyond policy, beyond
