back in but they hope they don't have to. abc7 news. >> and spencer christian joins us now. >> what are firefighters facing in the next few days? this just looks ominous. >> well, they're facing a warm-up with temperatures about 20 degrees above average for this time of year in some locations. and as it was pointed out, it will be very, very dry. there will be an increase in the potential for fires. here's a look at our excessive heat warning to give an idea of how large the area is. virtually all of the bay area is under the excessive heat warning. the high temperatures will range from upper 90s to about 110 degrees. maybe even higher than that in some places. that brings the risk of heat-related illness and there's a heat advisory in effect for

the bay shoreline and the coast. if there's over exposure in the sun and heat. how hot will it be? on saturday we expect highs in our inland areas ranging from 101 to 104. on subbnday, up to 110. even monday, labor day, we'll still see highs between 104 and 108 before we see temperatures moderating a bit. i'll give you a closer look at the complete seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> all right. thank you. add up the heat and poor air quality and some people are having a tough time breathing. how can you distinguish between covid-19 and other issues? >> reporter: for more than a week, air quality throughout much of the bay area has taken a hit. our skies hit with smoke from the ongoing wildfires. in san jose, moderate conditions offered a slight break for some. at the regional park, residents took advantage knowing how quickly the air quality index

your health which is at risk because of the pandemic. coronavirus claimed 164 lives with that the past 24 hours, which is higher than average. the number of new cases is below average, and the number of hospitalized patients continues to decline. the test positivity rate, the percentage of tests coming back positive, is down to 5% and continues to drop. some good news there. alameda county announce ad few hours ago that tomorrow, indoor hair salons and barber shops can resume business. outdoor and fitness and dance classes can resume as well along with outdoor entertainment centers like minture golf and batting cages. play grounds are still officially closed. malls and retail can open at 25% capacity while grocery stores are limited to 50% capacity. 15 schools in marin county will be allowed to reopen for in person instruction as early as september 8. that's tuesday.

now, let's take live look at san francisco international airport where the number is down sharply from last year. united airlines is the largest carrier. it is changing its business plan by switching to cargo to keep people working. the economy is part of building a better bay area. how cargo has back critical source of airline revenue with money from the federal cares pact had saved massive furloughs from the industry. >> reporter: across the airlines, employees are waiting to see if a second federal aid package will keep them working beyond the end of the month. they're busy on the tarmac, loading and unloading cargo instead of the usual volume of passenger bags. the cargo being loaded on to this jet is headed to guam. >> we're averaging about four or five flights a day. out of san francisco, we did 580 so far out of san francisco. and six hundred coming back into

the dow dropped almost the u.s. labor department released the latest weekly jobless claims today. more than 880,000 people filed for up employment last week. that's much lower than the projections of 950,000 and it is just the second time in about six months new weekly claims are below 1 million. there are clearly 13 million claims. people are trying to receive unemployment benefits and they have faced a lot of issues. earlier we reported about a stunning discovery. >> the edd paying under employment benefits to inmates running a scam inside the county jail while a million workers are waiting for their benefit checks. 7 on your side has been investigating this. michael finney with the story. this is astounding, michael. >> it is astounding and it is agine, you're unemployed. and these guys get a quarter

since march, these guys got their money fast. often within a couple weeks. one claim was filed july 24th. within ten da, 20,000 payment was mailed to a place in palo alto. another was filed and a week later edd mailed $21,000 to an address in oakland. the inmates collaborated over the jail phone system. sometimes in conference calls. they say suspects collected names and social security numbers of fellow inmates and friends on the outside. using that personal data to file bogus claims. an inspector overheard it by chance. >> he heard an inmate talking about it. here's how you can get this easy money. >> authorities say inmates discuss filling out the edd applications. they claim only the self-employed and entitled to pandemic assistance. >> and it worked for they will. >> this as honest workers couldn't get benefits. >> what did i do wrong?

it says the fbi has election crime coordinators in each local field office to assess threats, and that includes steps for voters to take. most are pretty straightforward. like check your polling information, know how and where you can vote, know where your information is coming from. especially if you're finding it on social media from under verified sources. and beware of deep fakes where there can be artificial audio and visual recordings. they look real but they're fake. report suspicious activity to the fbi. facebook just announced it will ban new political ads the week before election today. mark zuckerberg, ceo of the biggest social media network, says the move is part of an every to protect against election interference. while new ads will be banned, previously approved ads had continue to run throughout the election cycle. critics have argued the policy against fact checking ads allows the company to profit from

>> with everything going on, i feel like this snuck up on us but the nfl season starts one week from today. that game will feature the houston texants and the defending kansas city chiefs. the 49ers revenge tour officially begins in ten days. and george kittle and the 49ers need every last second of that time. missing practice with a sore hamstring and others have been forced to sit out. this combined with the fact their key rookies will have to play their first nfl game without a pre season game makes for an interesting training camp. >> we do have a lot to out rehabbing. we're also inactive. we're always talking. i will say that i loved about it. charlie warner got no pre season games. they don't have a taste of what the nfl is like.
