get ready for a hot, hot holiday weekend. temperatures will skyrocket all around the bay area. it will be tough to cool off as well. many lakes and beaches will be closed because of covid concerns. good afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> taking a live look outside from our east bay hills tower camera, that is where some of the hottest temperatures could be. so right away, let's get to abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel with a look at what is expected. things could get dangerous. >> absolutely. that's why we have a number of warnings. let's take a look at the excessive heat warning that starts tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. it runs until 9:00 p.m. monday. this covers all inland areas. temperatures in the upper 90s to 110 degrees plus. that means the risk of heat illnesses will be running very high. we have a heat advisory for the same time period. that covers the coast and parts of the bay. heat illnesses are possible as temperatures soar.

how hot are we talking about on day one of the heat wave? 110 antioch, 103, 98 in santa rosa, 95, san rafael, 77 in san francisco, 70 degrees in half moon bay. this is just the start of the dangerous heat wave. it is only going to get hotter as we head to the second half of the holiday weekend. i'll be back with the details coming up. >> now in morgan hill, this ace hardware store is already out of large fans but they do have generators. they've been struggling to keep the shelves stocked since the last heat wave just weeks ago. >> generators, misting, hosing, all of that. we're pretty solid on it. >> the store manager says pools have been hard to come by with people looking for any way to stay cool. >> a lot of beaches in the bay area are closed this holiday weekend. in marin county, visitors are not allowed at point reyes,

pacifica has closed all of its beaches. the fitzgerald marine reserve and tunitas creek beach is closed. lake berryessa because of the wildfires is closed. santa clara has closed its beaches except for a few hours each day. the beaches will be open in half moon bay. the city council considered closing but decided against it believing visitors would travel there anyway. this won't be permitted this time tomorrow in santa cruz. there aren't that many people out there right now anyway. it is a live picture from the main beach in front of the boardwalk. beaches county wide will be off limits. dawn until the late afternoon hours, people are allowed to walk across the sand to participate in water activities, but sunbathing and beach walks, not allowed. well, one popular spot to cool off will be available. at least in some areas after months of closure. the sun valley shopping center

reopened today. abc7 news reporter has more from concord. >> it may be labor day. but karina is already shopping for christmas. >> i'm extremely excited and the most thing i'm excited about, the prices, i was able to buy a lot more than i thought. >> she was one of the first to hit the stores. the first day on the shopping central's reopening. joseph is the manager here. like other shops, they're full of sales. he said the tough part is trying to help customers feel safe and comfortable in this new normal. >> getting readjusted to talking to them. social distancing, things like that. >> we're happy to see the foot traffic that we have today. it looks really good for us as far as the return of customers back to the shopping central. >> nathan is the general manager of the sun valley shopping central. he said the reopening plan had to first be approved by the

contra costa health department such as protocols for social distancing. retail has taken a huge hit in the shutdown. unlike other retailers, he says sun valley is poised for a strong comeback. they have a 90% occupancy rate with more stores coming and strong customer loyalty. the reopening means hundreds of employees are headed back to work. however, they're only allowed to operate at 25% of capacity which means only about 2,500 people will be allowed inside. he says, they're still poised for a strong rebound. >> i think we'll see the shopping center start to move forward as far as revenue goes, and increase. as things get better with the pandemic, we'll see a big turn-around. >> in concord, abc7 news. >> all right. so how do you beat the heat? abc7 news special correspondent dr. patel is joining us. in the old days, you go to the movies, to the mall, enjoy the

air conditioning. not an option at this point. what are you recommending? >> what i'm recommending is that people have to stay indoors. if you must go outside, you have to get some fresh air, try to do in it shade, away from the really high heat times in the middle of the afternoon, and make absolute sure you're staying hydrated and avoid alcohol. it will dehydrate you even further. >> i'm sorry you said that. >> in moderation, larry. >> what are the symptoms of heat stroke? people are going to go outside and then who knows how you start to feel. generally, isn't tight late once feel it? >> absolutely. you nailed it. it is pretty insid just. meaning kit come on pretty fast. so heat exhaustion which will come first. that's where you're having dry red skin. you can get nausea, dizziness, headache. if and when anyone starts to get a fever and or any neurological

symptoms, something like confusion or not knowing where you are. that's an emergency. that can be heat stroke. that can be life threatening. in either case, you want to get someone out of the heat, get a cool mist or a moist towel and seek medical care if you have any concerns. >> based on your answer, we know this is going to happen. we've got the heat. you have the smoky air in a lot of conditions, and covid is out there looming. so i am variably, some people will feel lousy and say, oh, no, do i have coronavirus? what is your advice to them? >> my advice is stay inside. we're in the middle of this trifecta in the bay area. so all three fit in thi diagram. if you think about heat exhaustion and stroke, you can have body aches, you can have a fever, naush, a vomiting, diarrhea, you can have those with covid-19. with covid-19, you're not necessarily going to get the dry clammy skin. or lose your ability to sweat. that will be more related to heat stroke. with wildfire exposure, you can

have the upper respiratory symptoms as well. so things like coughing or feeling you have bronchiis. here's one big differentiation. if you remove what is causing the problem, you get out of the bad air, away from the heat and you improve, it is likely not an infection or covid-19. if those symptoms persist, you might want to look into the fact that you might have an infection. i know it is really tricky right now. people's best bet is to stay indoors and stay safe. >> that's really good advice in terms of moving to another location. you probably don't have covid. despite -- >> absolutely. remove the offending agent and you get better. >> despite what all the officials are saying, and stay inside and all the warnings, history tells us, people are going to throw parties over this holiday weekend. and that scares public health officials for a variety of reasons. >> it totally does. we saw it with graduations,

hours ago. there are dozens of surfers out taking to the tide. they'll be closed. that won't be the case in half moon bay. the beaches will remain open. they don't have the authority to close them as some are outside the city's jurisdiction. here in pacifica, that enforcement starts sunrise tomorrow through sunrise on tuesday. a lot of people have been asking questions about fines. it will look a lot like memorial day weekend. they'll have both entrances here blocked off. and they'll have police officers and rangers patrolling the beach and the coast side. the max penalty will be $1,000 with a citation but that will be determined on a case by case

the scu complex fire has now burned more than 396,000 acres, containment is up to 82%. in the north bay, the lnu complex has scorched 375,000 acres. containment there, up to 87%. the czu complex in san mateo and santa cruz counties has burned more than 86,000 acres. containment is at 56%. firefighters are making head way on the woodward fire in marin county in point reyes national seashore. it has burned more than 4,700 acres. one of several fires sparked by line a few weeks ago. today officials addressed the expected heat wave this weekend

and how it might affect their effort. >> we're in excellent shape. the crews have finished almost all the line building. they're working what we call mop-up. so extinguishing everything close to the line so we feel like we're well prepared for the weather that's coming. >> a few more evacuation orders were downgraded by the sheriff's office to evacuation warnings. the crew from nevada is expected to arrive to take over command of that wildfire. meanwhile, firefighters receiving thanks from around the bay area. check out these thank you letters. cal fire posted these images on twitter thanking the kids who have taken the time to write their firefighters. they add the letters, cards and drawings have meant so much and are so touching. >> so sweet. in other news, san francisco mayor london breed called president trump a terrorist as she defended house speaker pelosi's salon visit to delores park. hairstylists on both sides of the controversy say they

some good news for those seeking unemployment assistance. hi, michael. >> finally, some much needed money for those who need it the most. the extra $300 in unemployment money should begin showing up on edd debit cards next week. monday, actually. the employment development department has vowed first payments will begin on labor day. to get that money, you must already be earning at least $100 per week in jobless benefits. now, of course, this is only half the original $600 the

unemployment we're getting from the first round of stimulus money. this new round of extra money will last a minimum of three weeks. and we have more good news for consumers. gas prices nationwide are at their lowest since 2004 for labor day weekend. most of the rest of the country is paying an average of $2.23 a gallon. of course, here in the bay area, no way. we're paying more than $1.25 more. in san francisco we're paying $3.44 a gallon for regular. that's down 29 cents from last year. oakland, you're forking out $3.34. down almost 32 cents. and san jose, you're coming in at $3.33. down 27 cents a gallon from last year. a new survey from car buying car guru has found an interesting trend. many who had abandoned ownership of cars are returning to the car

showroom. 22% of those buying cars these days say they had not been planning to buy a car before the pandemic. but fewer of us are calling uber and lyft for rides. i've been hearing this from local dealerships saying people who told them they hadn't owned a car for three or four years were showing up. even though you don't have to get to work every single day, do have to get to some places and people feel much safer in their car that they've claimed. >> makes a lot of sense. thanks. to a deer in a rather sticky situation. this buck had been roaming around in fair oaks with a bunch of string stuck on its antlers. poor guy has that stuff on his head. a wildlife rescue group has been trying to track the buck and hopes to zero in on the location where authorities can try to execute a rescue and cut it off.

dropping. the united states total number of case is nearly 6.2 million cases with more than 187,000 deaths. now, a new model is predicting more than 410,000 americans will die from covid-19 by january. it has been put together by the university of washington's institute for health metrics and evaluation. the model cites a decrease in mask use in some regions and warns the total could go even higher if restrictions are eased. there's new information about covid-19 and the human heart and the risks that damage could pose for athletes and others. >> major league pitcher eduardo rodriguez didn't need an umpire to make the call. the red sox ace dropped out because of a heart issue caused by covid-19. now researchers in the bay area are shedding new light on how

be able to beat. >> and there is more news for athletes and others. when the gladstone team compard their findings to heart tissue taken from covid patient who's did not survive, they found evidence of the same damage. even in patients who were not diagnosed with heart issues. >> when we saw that, now maybe two, three weeks ago, that's when we felt compelled we need to put this out there. >> the timing could weigh into an increasingly urgent debate. college officials have now revealed evidence of heart inflammation in about a third of big ten football players with covid. that has donald trump is urging the league to start its season. the doctor said the danger of doing that is becoming more evident. >> the schools and athletes are realizing, they may have not even known they had covid. been asymptomatic. when you stress the heart, competitive athletics, then they're starting to see problems in several individuals.

covid-19 germs. coronavirus costumes hitting halloween dismays in stores. this is so distasteful. le folks are saying it is in poor taste given the catastrophic consequences the pandemic has brought. one author likened to it dressing up as terrorist during halloween 2001. i mean, we're looking at these pictures. they're pretty hilarious. could you imagine a child wanting to partake in this? what do you think? it is definitely distasteful. i also think at a time like this when the pandemic is something serious and we should be taking it seriously, making light of it is perhaps people's way of coping with such a bad situation. they can't go out and take their

. we started working with the california association of food banks to serve families in need at the start of covid. what we decided was to nish yit a buy a wedge give a wedge program where we told our consumers, our cheese fans out there across the country if you buy cheese from us we'll make sure we donate the equal amount of cheese direct to the area food bank. it resulted in about 3,000 pounds of cheese or 1,400 family sized packed wedges of cheese. we're making a difference to people that need food, and food is our business, part of our hearts, part of our family and we're just happy to do this. feels great but it's also just

all cheese we make goes to restaurants and goes to hotels, corporate dining, goes on airplanes. all that business just halted. our cows continue to produce millwreck, and we have to put that milk into the vats, and then our aging room starts to build up. all in an effort to reduce production. >> over my lifetime there's been a lot of ups and downs. this is just another down, and we'll get over it. >> there are local producers here in the bay area that want to not just keep their employees working but they want to give back at the same time, and i think that in times of crisis you can do both. we're going to continue to give back as much as we possibly are able to, because it's important not just to look at the stability and profitability of our own business but to be helping our community and neighbors at the same time. >> a story of endurance.
