brutally hot temperatures across the bay area expected this weekend. add the poor air quality, a record setting 19th consecutive spare the air day today, plus a concern about a spike in coronavirus cases from large gatherings. it's all a dangerous combination. good morning, everyone. it is saturday, september 5th. i'm liz kreutz. thank you for joining us. triple digit temperatures are expected to begin in parts of the bay area, so we're going to get right to meteorologist lisa argen tracking it all. >> we do have some comfortable temperatures right now, but it all goes downhill very quickly. we certainly have a heat warning. live doppler 7 right here showing you no fog at all. it's all due to high pressure

building in allowing for once again the heat to really soar in our inland valleys. from 11:00 to 9:00 p.m. monday night we're talking upper 90s to 110 degrees in our inland valleys with a heat advisory right along the coast and bay shore. so we're talking the risk of heatstroke and a spare the air alert today with poor air quality, north bay, coast, and central bay, east bay, moderate air quality for your sunday. a look at the current air quality shows good conditions throughout most of the bay area. vackaville, though, you can see it's moderate. and as we go further to the south san jose is looking good, but down around the fires there, around la honda it is moderate. looking at 1:00, 100 degrees in livermore with near 80 in oakland. but by 4:00, 5:00 we are well past 100 from concord to san ramon into gilroy.

it is going to be sweltering today. the heat only builds for your sunday with perhaps 110 inland. for your holiday on monday we're still very, very warm and then, liz, into tuesday we're talking an offshore flow with high fire danger. >> lisa, thank you. we have a live air quality tracker on our website so you can see at a glance what the conditions are like outside. you can find that on abc7news.com and the abc 7 news app. and the extreme heat could strain the states power grid. that's why there's a flex alert for the holiday weekend and a possibility of more rolling black outs. they say they're not planning any right now. instead utility companies like pg&e will focus on conservation during peak hours. so from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. starting today that will be happening and the statewide flex alert goes from today through monday. and an alert from health officials as well. celebrate the labor day weekend

responsibly or face a new spike in coronavirus cases. temperatures in some areas are expected to hit triple digits. abc 7 reporter luz pena has more. >> reporter: record hot temperatures are expected to hit the bay area this weekend. >> it's going to be 104. that's what my phone told me. >> reporter: saturday expected to be the hottest temperatures reaching up to 116 degrees. >> that decreases the amount of time we can spend outside because of the air quality. so we're taking our chance tonight to get in our last bit of outside time before it heats up. >> reporter: the combination of that heat plus the holiday weekend is exactly what experts are concerned about pointing to a possible spike of covid-19 cases. >> a lot of noses and mouths are going to get together without masks on. >> reporter: the perfect formula for coronavirus spread that can bring us back to square one.

dr. peter says it's not venue but our behavior. >> as opposed to being indoors which is thought of being riskier but you're with two other people you've been with in your pod for the last few weeks. >> reporter: this health department says they are ready with seven cooling centers this weekend. they're not taking any chances. >> there'll be a brief screening and once they come in we'll have them socially distance. we'll have seating that's 6 feet apart. >> reporter: to prevent power outages california power grid operators are asking residents to conserve electricity and keeping the ac to 78 degrees for the rest of the day. luz pena, abc 7 news. >> and the intense heat this labor day weekend has prompted cities across the bay area to open cooling centers.

centers will be open today at the coopertino senior center, the mountain view center and the murphy park billing in sunnyvale. three centers at the roosevelt, mayfair and south side centers. social distancing protocols will be observed at all the centers so keep that in mind, and they will stay open through monday. this weekend's heat wave is expected to push inland temperatures well into the 100s. that means lots of people will be heading to the beach or at least trying to. be warned because of the pandemic many beaches are closed for the holiday weekend. in marin county visitors are not allowed at point raies nationall seashore. lake bear esa is closed in napa county. that's due to the wildfires. santa clara has closed all its beaches except for a few hours each day. pacifica will close its beaches

starting this morning. but as abc 7 reporter stephanie s sierra found they're not stopping the crowds. >> i think the whole thing has been confusing. >> i guess confusing. pacifica has closed a lot over weekends recently and i get the closures because of the fire evacuation and all that, but it gets confusing. >> reporter: see surfs up in pacifica for now, but it won't say that way for labor day weekend. all four of the city's beaches will be closed. >> we are encouraging people to just stay home this weekend. >> reporter: the pacifica captain says there will be enforcement but they're hoping for voluntary compliance. >> we'll have officers monitoring the beach and have additional park rangers augmenting our efforts and discouraging people from coming on the beach. >> reporter: yet just a mile up the road anyone can ride the tide in half moon bay. the sandy beaches will now be

open. >> now hearing the other beaches are open i would have been closed all the beaches would have been closed at the same time. >> reporter: if you ask them it doesn't make sense especially paired with the fear these large crowds could cause another covid surge. >> i'm as concerned as probably all the northern californians are about what's happened with covid. >> reporter: half moon bay's city manager says the city doesn't have the other to close all the beaches as some are outside the city's jurisdiction. but locals christina gong and jonathan shu follow the rules. >> i feel it's been consistently packed every weekend, so wear your masks, everyone. >> reporter: stephanie sierra, abc 7 news. and in the north bay it's a similar message at beaches and towns along the russian river. please stay away. that didn't stop people from trying to beat the heat

yesterday. officials were worried beach goers may not socially distance this weekend. and they also have another concern. labor day weekend arrives just as residents return to sonoma county that had been evacuated due to the walbridge fire. >> we love our visitors but please consider coming during the week. >> now locals worry about a repeat performance. firefighters, they continue to make progress against the three biggest fires burning in northern california. the scu complex has burned nearly 397,000 acres. it's 84% contained. in the north bay the lnu complex has charred more than 375,000 acres. it's 87% contained. and the santa cruz municipalitiens the czu

complex -- this morning welcome news for evacuees, 6,300 people were allowed back into their homes. residents can find out which zone they live in and if they can return by looking at this map. the green indicates repopulation zones. here's abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo with details on this long awaited return. an eerie silence remains over highway 9 as residents slowly make their way back to the santa cruz mountains. >> we've been in a motel for 16 days now. >> reporter: like many boulder creek resident stone had two hours to evacuate. after 29 years of living in the mountains she says there's little fear as she's learned to

where understand. >> so why not just apologize? not you -- >> let me be clear. i can be responsible for my behavior. i can't tell other people what to do. >> president trump said during a campaign event in pennsylvania pelosi should have apologized for the salon visit. pelosi called the episode a setup. the san francisco public utilities commission announced the extension on friday. it was set to expire yesterday but that is no longer the case. the program provides residential customers with up to 35% off utility bills. it was designed to help people struggling to pay their bills during the pandemic. so far more than 6,000 residents have signed up for this program. and in the north bay the slowing spread of covid-19 in marin county means it will move down a notch next week on the states coronavirus ranking. that will allow mor allow mor aw

reopen and possibly schools month. schools may reopen for in person instruction later this month if the county can stay in the lower risk tier for two consecutive weeks. and in the north bay it's not just the pandemic and the danger of wildfires, wine country is facing what could be a serious financial disaster, smoke taint. vineyards in sonoma and napa counties -- abc 7 news reporter kate larson explains. >> we have a fire to the west of us, fire to the north of us and east of us. >> reporter: so no matter which way the wind blows smoke has been drifting into the ranch for weeks. best known for their olives they do also grow wine grapes. >> these grapes here already have trace levels of smoke taint

and they have another 5 weeks or so to go before harvest. >> reporter: saw-montha is president of the ranch. california fires often strike later in fall after the grape harvest which is at its height in august and september. >> having a fire this early affects that much more of the crop. >> reporter: grape growers are frantically sending grapes to be analyzed for smoke which can make wine taste sour or bitter. their website reports a 2 to 5 week backlog. this week, though, results have started to come in. these are the pinot noir grapes, they don't smell like smoke and they don't taste like smoke but this entire vineyard has tested positive for smoke. so instead they'll be left to rot on the ground. >> it's devastating because it's an entire years worth of work.

>> reporter: tony manages 3,000 acres in sonoma and napa counties with atlas vineyard management. he hopes to harvest 80% of their clients grapes. >> this a lot of acres in both counties that are, you know, untouched by the smoke. >> reporter: time will tell when he and others test more grapes in the fall. kate larson, abc 7 news. >> and there won't be parades or a festival, but organizers of carnival san francisco still have big plans for the event rescheduled for this weekend. they're holding a two-day community resource event to help the latino community which has been disproportionately hit by the pandemic. starers from the department of public health will conduct free covid test and the event fair. it takes place today between 18th and 20th streets. very important but, lisa, very different carnival than what

you'd usually expect. >> yeah, and hats off to the firefighters for getting the fires pretty much under control in this time period when they knew we were going into a time where the heat would come back, the winds would not be in our favor. so, boy, all the work that has been done amazing. as we get into the next couple of days you hunker down and have a plan to stay cool because if you look at doppler 7, this high pressure builds in. this is going to be for the weekend. but as we get towards the end of the holiday weekend offshore winds are going to be with us as an area of low pressure dives over the high and brings those offshore winds to the bay area monday night through tuesday. so that's another added concern onto the heat that arrives today. it is 57 in san mateo, 48 in half moon bay, though, so go outside now, enjoy it. 56 in napa. so feels pretty good out there. it's cooler in the north bay.

also along the coast, but inland already warming up. the winds -- i should say the atmosphere and upper elevations with somewhat of a north wind has warmed up. concord and livermore 3 to 5 degrees warmer. record temperatures, the spare the air alert and gusty winds with high fire danger coming into play next week. so one more look at the dangerous heat that is a warning from it national weather service inland. bullet right along the coast that's where we have the advisory. still looking at very warm temperatures. today right on through monday. so looking at that smoke forecast right now we're in good shape. as we go through the rest of the weekend you'll notice we're on the left-hand side of this legend and that means not bad out there even though we have that big band of high pressure overhead. once those winds begin to kick up and go offshore we'll see that smoke across the bay area.

we're not alone, all of california, much of the west looking at this excessive heat warning from los angeles through san diego and into vegas and even in phoenix. remember we need their power, right? so the possibility of some rolling black outs as well. so looking at the fog it's not anywhere to be seen. getting into your sunday it sets up a little bit offshore, but that's not going to help us out anyway. in fact, temperatures will build sunday into monday. looking at the relative humidity right now throughout the afternoon i should say, we're down to about 18%, lake berryessa, 25% in concord. the heat will dry out the brush. be very careful out there. as we look into your saturday night the recovery not too impressive with 39% in petaluma. looking at numbers on sunday, the pinks 110 antioch, concord, into monday very little change. notice we have cooling at the

coast, though, as we get into tuesday. that's when the winds are going to be with us as well. highs today ranging from the upper 70s in san francisco, 72 in half moon bay, how about 93 in fremont. upper 80s san mateo, upper 90s in napa, 104 in livermore, morgan hill 102. the accuweather seven day forecast beginning today, the extreme heat continues into your sunday and the risk of heat illnesses will continue as we get into labor day. then we've got that typical offshore flow, so we'll be watching it closely, liz, but be very careful out there. it's some dangerous heat and then those winds to contend with. >> can't catch a break. we're definitely in that time of year. just ahead messages of female empowerment, bravery and dedevotion in the new movie "mulan" now

of july going off. it was just probably anywhere from 20 to 30 gunshots. >> reporter: authorities had been on the hunt for 48-year-old michael rinel since last saturday. finding him at his home in lacy, washington. that's when officials say the self-described anti-fascist tried to speed away in his car and then allegedly pulled out a gun. >> there were shots fired into the vehicle, and the subject fled from the vehicle at which time there was additional shots that were fired. >> reporter: just hours before rinel died vice news released this interview in which he calls the killing of right wing activist day danielson self-defense. the father of two and army veteran telling the news outlet he acted as security at a blacks lives matter protest. >> totally justified. had i not acted i am confident that my friend and i'm sure i would have been killed. >> reporter: danielson was part of a pro-trump caravan that

drove through portland with 600 vehicles last week to counter those protesters. attorney general william barr released a statement friday calling rinel an admitted antifa member and suspected murderer saying in part the actions of law enforcement were a significant accomplishment in the ongoing effort to restore law and order to portland and other cities. christine sloan, abc news, new york. >> and now to the fire storm erupting over a port accusing president trump of making insulting comments about fallen american troops. the atlantic quoted anonymous sources saying he referred to them, quote, as suckers and losers. the president is fiercely denying the allegations. here's abc news chief correspondent jonathan carl. >> reporter: joe biden came out with his angriest denunciation of president trump yet. >> if the article is true and it

appears to be based on the things he said, it is absolutely damnable. it is a disgrace. it is so un-american. it is so unpatriotic. >> reporter: the inarticle based entirely on anonymous sources portrays the president as someone with contempt for military service. in a 2015 trip to france the president was supposed to visit a world war i cemetery where american troops are buried. but the white house canceled the visit saying bad weather made it impossible for the president's helicopter to fly. the atlantic article alleges trump said, why should i go to that cemetery, it's filled with losers? . the president heard about the story on air force one, and as fast as he landed he summoned reporters to the dark tarmic and angrily denied it all. >> i would be willing to swear on anything i never said that about our fallen heroes. >> reporter: multiple people

with the president on the france trip including critic john bolton said on the record they never heard the president call dead american troops suckers or losers. joe biden said he finds the story believable because of the president's past comments including what he said in 2015 about john mccain. >> he's not a war hero. he's a war hero because he was captured. i like people that weren't captured, okay? i hate to tell you. >> reporter: and the article says trump is not fit to be commander in chief. >> how would you feel if you had a kid in afghanistan right now? how would you feel if you lost a son, daughter, husband, wife? >> reporter: the president firmly denied the story again saying those who serve in the military are heroes. >> it's a fake story written by a magazine that was probable not going to be around much longer. but it was a totally fake story.

>> reporter: jonathan carl, abc news, washington. >> and the united states surgeon general is now clarifying a call for governors to prepare for a possible november release of a coronavirus vaccine. surgeon general jerome adams says for that to happen, for us to get that vaccine by then the vaccine would have to be both safe and effective, and it would go to those who need it most like medical workers and at risk groups. a doctor with operation warp speed says whenever a vaccine is ready they will have enough to evacuate 20 to people. >> meanwhile modrna is slowing enrollment in their phase three trials to make sure it has rep

representation. coping with the lausds of a child is difficult, of course, and one livermore mom is honoring her son's memory with an act of kindness. a free ice cream drive-thru for her community. >> dylan only lived 25 months, three days and his first open heart at 9 days old, his second at four months old. he was a happy boy. he loved to smile and make people laugh. he loved ice cream. it is the 20-year anniversary of his passing. the original plan was i was going to buy $400 worth of ice cream and i put it on social media, and people thought that was the coolest thing, and within 48 hours i got $1,500 in donations to buy more ice cream and we probable had about 25 cars lieped up waiting, we were giving away mickey mouse ears and minnie mouse ears.

fluctuating from time to time and looking at those gusty winds as we get into monday night and tuesday. another look at the warning area. pretty much the entire bay area just right along the coast and a little bit around the bay shore is the heat advisory. we have moderate air quality all around the bay, and it should stay that way for the most part. we will get into things shifting once we get into those winds that will develop monday night. northern california, southern california looking into arizona and vegas, and that's why we could see those rolling black outs as we buy our power from our friends. as we get into your sunday looking at patchy fog and right along the coast it's going to be warm but you'll have a bit of a sea breeze the next few days. relative humidity by this afternoon down into the 20% range. so even without those offshore

winds it's a dry scenario today through the evening hours. the recovery we usually get at night just confined to san francisco at 83%. only 23% in clover dale overnight. so into your sunday it's even hotter. look at how these pinks begin to invade not only the east bay but parts of the north bay. we're still comfortable in the city. upper 70s to near 80. this is your monday, could get more cooling right at the coast, but no relief until perhaps tuesday, but then again that's when we're getting into that offshore flow. 80 in richmond, 84 in oakland, so unfortunately all these events coming into play for what we will call a perfect storm of elements for fire danger heat risk as we get through not only the weekend but into next week. 104 in livermore, 95 in san jose, hazy and hot. overnight lows tonight only cooling off really in the city. we've got those longer september

nights. still in the 70s, though, to near 80 in the upper elevations. the spare the air alert today could be extended into your sunday, looking at the heat risk continuing into your holiday. monday, still saying hot with those offshore winds by the middle of next week. liz? >> all right, lisa, we're going to have all be very careful the next few days. another story we want to tell you about. an off-duty peninsula police officer is being called a hero after saving the lives of two teens involved in a violent car crash. the wreck happened on interstate 80 thursday night near the donner pass in sota springs. officers say the teens should have never bip behind the wheel of alen luxury car. abc 7 anchor larry beil has the details. >> it all unfolded within 60 seconds of my arrival. >> reporter: a split second decision by the police officer saved the lives of two teenagers who found themselves badly hurt after a fiery car crash.

a teenage boy who was believed to have been at the wheel crawled out of the wrecked car at 2017 maz rotty levante. a teenage girl managed to get out of the car but she collapsed dangerously close to the fire. >> we had to pull her away and get her to a safe distance because the car was not doing well at that point. there were things blowing up in the background, and we needed to get her to a safe distance so that she should be okay. >> reporter: he dragged her to safety before fire consumed the rest of the wreckage. bystanders also helped. he said it was almost as if everyone knew what they had to do. >> it's a high traffic area. theres trucks and semis coming down the road so we started working together without even communicating. >> reporter: they were 14 and 15, not old enough to drive. investigators say speed was a factor estimated 100 miles an hour when they lost control and
