california after a wildfire exploded to more than 70,000 acres in just days and a terrifying glimpse from inside this inferno in fresno revealing smoke so thick, it blocked the midday sun, ash so thick, it now blankets the area like snow. the so-called creek fire consuming entire neighborhoods. the streets unrecognizable. >> the fire completely engulfed everything. >> reporter: over the weekend, hundreds of people surrounded by flames while trying to escape a popular campsite in the sierra national forest. families cornered by the fire unsure if they would survive. >> we're completely trapped. there's fire on all sides all au all the roads are burnt. >> reporter: some heading in the water in a last-ditch effort to escape. >> the fire just moved so fast, so there was only so much we could do. >> reporter: others desperately trying to drive through the fast-approaching flames. >> oh, my god. >> holy -- >> just keep going.

>> reporter: the national guard racing to air lift more than 200 people out of the danger zone. ambulances waiting on the ground to rush them to safety, and now the so-called eldorado fire exploding to more than 7,000 acres in just hours. officials now saying this blaze was caused by fireworks from a gender reveal party and it comes as the state faces record-scorching heat. los angeles county hitting 121 degrees. even san francisco hitting 100 degrees. and forecasters warn high winds in many areas today could make the firefight even more challenging. faith abubey, abc news. >> faith, thank you. and now to the coronavirus. doctors say this weekend will be critical to prevent a surge of infections this fall. right now these 30 states are seeing an increase in cases, many of them because of college campuses, but labor day gatherings are raising new concerns. crowds have been packing beaches from new jersey to california, and we found crowds gathering outside bars from jacksonville, florida, to nashville, tennessee.

meanwhile, indiana university is investigating crowds of students seen gathering together on rental boats. medical experts are pleading with people to wear their masks and they say a vaccine is still months away. democratic vice presidential candidate nominee kamala harris said sunday she would not trust president trump's word when it comes to the safety of a vaccine. >> i will say that i would not trust donald trump, and it would have to be a credible source of information that talks about the efficacy and the reliability of whatever he's talking about. he's looking at an election coming up in less than 60 days, and he's grasping for whatever he can get to pretend that he has been a leader on this issue when he has not. >> the trump administration has insisted safety will be a top priority. we turn now to demonstrations demanding police reform across this country. city officials in rochester, new

york, are announcing changes at their police department including the redirecting of funds. meanwhile, church volunteers, senior citizens are hitting the streets hoping to keep the peace. overnight more than 1,000 people in rochester, new york -- >> they're going to throw rubber bullets, who cares. >> reporter: -- peacefully protesting the death of daniel prude, a black man who died after an encounter with police. among the crowd 50 volunteer church elders serving as a buffer between protesters and police. >> what better reason to make a sacrifice than for your youth who have led us in these movements across the nation. >> reporter: the days' long protests coming as the circumstances surrounding prude's death face new scrutiny. >> get on the ground, man. >> no. >> get on the ground. >> reporter: a body camera captured the incident back in march. police say prude was combative, spitting on them and claiming to have the coronavirus. the officers placed a hood over his head and pinned his neck to the ground. he died at the hospital several days later. the medical examiner called his

death a homicide ruling he died from complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint, ex-slighted delirium and pcp. several officers involved have been suspended. the state's attorney general says a grand jury will decide whether the officers will face charges. >> the video i understand is very disturbing. it's very disturbing. it breaks my heart as well, but we have to follow the process. >> reporter: the city is already announcing a number of police reforms. the mayor says the department's crisis intervention team and its budget will be moved to the city's department of youth and recreation services, and according to the police chief, the department is changing how officers respond to mental health calls. >> we are looking at ways to reimagine policing surrounding mental health. >> reporter: on the other side of the country, more protests in portland, oregon. [ crowd chanting ] the demonstrations initially sparked in the wake of george floyd's death more than 100 days ago. over the weekend dramatic video showing a protester on fire as

police declared a riot. >> stop, drop and roll. >> reporter: and now jacob blake, the man shot seven times in the back by a police officer in kenosha, wisconsin, is sharing this message from his hospital bed. >> it hurts to breathe. it hurts to sleep. it hurts to move from side to side. it hurts to eat. please, i'm telling you, change your lives out there. we can stick together. >> back in rochester the prude family says they support the attorney general's order for a grand jury but they say it is very concerning that it took six months. with election day less than two months away, the top republican in the house is reportedly urging president trump to stop criticizingiln ba. house minority leader kevin mccarthy tells the website axios he warned the president that his criticism will hurt republicans running for congress and hurt the president himself. mccarthy reportedly said senior citizens are most afraid of covid, and if they don't vote, he said, quote, we're screwed. meanwhile, the president has tweeted this video featuring

veterans who are amputees vouching for him. it's aimed at disputing a report in "the atlantic" magazine accusing the president of disparaging u.s. troops allegedly calling them losers. most of the report has not been confirmed. the veterans affairs secretary is defending the president. >> have you ever heard the president disparage u.s. service members or veterans? >> well, absolutely not, and i would be offended too if i thought it was true. again, i think anonymous are the same people that brought you fake heart attacks, fake strokes, russian collusion. >> if they're real, it's beneath the dignity of any commander in chief. truly they're despicable. >> the president has no campaign events today while joe biden heads to pennsylvania. the navy is conducting a search and rescue operation for a missing sailor who may have gone overboard in the north arabian sea. the sailor was aboard the "uss nimitz" but could not be located on the aircraft carrier sunday.

back now with tense moments in eastern china. a boy got his head stuck between the metal bars outside his home and was dangling off the fifth floor. you see it there. firefighters split up to rescue him. one group held him on the balcony while the others climbed a ladder. they got the bars and pulled him out after ten long minutes. we turn now to the shocking moment at the u.s. open. the number one player in the world, novak djokovic, has been thrown out of the tournament after hitting the line judge with a ball. here's abc's megan tevrizian. >> reporter: a stunning moment at the u.s. open. >> game, carreno busta. >> reporter: this morning, novak djokovic, the top tennis player in the world, out of the

after takeoff from honolulu shows flames burning outside the cabin after an engine failed. more than 200 people were on board. the plane turned around for an emergency landing. passengers and witnesses describe the terrifying sight and sounds. >> it was kind of just like whooh, whooh, just like a few of them so that's when we went outside looking to see what the cause of the sound was looking around. that's when i noticed the plane that was flying directly by us. there seemed to be fire coming out of the engine. >> the flight's operator, atlas air, is investigating what happened. major league baseball has lost another legend. hall of famer lou brock has died. he helped the cardinals win two world series in the '60s. espn calls him a base stealing icon. his deh mes one week after pitcher tom seaver died. they faced each other 157 times. lou brock was 81. turning back to the coronavirus now, doctors are sharing some important tips on how to stay safe during your labor day activities.

it comes as a new forecast predicts the coronavirus death toll in the u.s. could hit 400,000 by the end of the year. more than double the current number. earlier i spoke with dr. ryan ribeiro. people are getting ready to celebrate labor day today. happy labor y to you, and we want to help people stay safe. for outdoor gatherings what's the limit, and are masks still necessary? >> there are definitely some general principles that can help reduce the risk. so first outdoor activities are just drastically safer than indoor activities. the outdire environment helps the virus dissipate, so keep it outdoors. number two, unfortunately, you do still need to wear masks even if you're socially distancing, and finally, you do want to keep the group small. it only takes one person who is an asymptomatic carrier to infect the entire group. >> we've seen a warning there

are more infections right now than we saw on memorial day and we all remember the spike in cases after that holiday. so does that mean we should be bracing for a rough few weeks as we head into what's expected to be a tough fall season? >> yes, i think we can expect ople wesnd, caleeg i think red effect oth t>>ocr,eworecast coronavirus death toll could hit 400,000 by the end of the year, more than doubling the current number. what do you make of this forecast? >> so, i think since the early days of covid, public health experts actually have been warning about this winter of 2020 and how it can be especially brutal. so 400,000 is very probable. now, i think one of the interesting things about these projections in particular is the range was very wide from 277,000 all the way up to over 600,000 deaths, and that was depending on compliance with masking and social distancing. >> our thanks to dr. ribeiro there.
