battling dozens of wildfires fueled by record-breaking heat. one of the largest fires exploded overnight to 135,000 acres with 0% containment after already burning dozens of homes in big creek. monday night the california national guard attempted another rescue using a military chinook helicopter after reports of 14 hikers trapped at a mountain resort. but authorities said the mission was unsuccessful because heavy smoke prevented the pilots from making a safe landing. >> there's fire on all sides all around us. all the roads are burnt. >> reporter: unlike this successful rescue over the weekend when a helicopter pulled hundreds of people to safety as flames surrounded them at a campsite. >> some of them were in critical condition with burns or broken bones. to get aircraft to fly at night into the mountains is really something else. >> reporter: and now concerns about the extreme fire danger spreading to other states. in colorado a wildfire north of denver is now the largest this state

history burning nearly 100,000 acres. in oregon the air quality deteriorating as rare air east winds funnel smoke in from multiple fires. one of those fires burning near spokane, washington. authorities say up to 80% of the homes in the town of mauldin have been destroyed by a fire sweeping through the area. this resident posting a picture of the fire writing, the entire town is gone. and back to california as we reported, fireworks from a gender reveal party are blamed for setting one fire, and now the woman who helped make gender parties popular in recent years has posted a message asking people to stop having these, quote, stupid parties. now to the coronavirus emergency. a concern about a post-labor day surge of infections. right now cases are rising in 30 states largely because of colleges re-opening and these 14 states are seeing an increase in hospitalizations. medical experts are predicting more infections this fall than last spring but are predicting less deaths thanks in part to

better treatment. over the weekend crowds packed onto beaches along the east and west coast and tourist hot spots like las vegas saw large crowds with very little social distancing in some areas. >> the tourists coming into town that are not staying six feet away from each other but looks like they're socially distancing six inches away from each other. meanwhile, west virginia university is the latest to move all undergraduate courses on line because of concern about parties held over the weekend. more than 51,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported on college campuses nationwide. many schools are now suspending students who attend large gatherings. now to the race for the white house. election day is eight weeks from today. president trump is attacking democratic nominee joe biden calling him a, quote, stupid person while biden is calling the president downright un-american for his alleged comments about fallen u.s. soldiers. abc's faith abubey has the latest from washington. faith, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, kenneth and mona.

we're now in the final stretch of the campaign season and both candidates are on the attack. president donald trump delivering an insult filled campaign stump speech from the northern steps of the white house on labor day. >> biden is a stupid person. >> reporter: stepping up attacks on his political rival joe biden as he announced yet another big surprise on the way in the fight for a covid-19 vaccine. >> we're going to have a vaccine very soon. maybe even before a very special date. >> reporter: on the campaign trail in pennsylvania biden hitting back at trump's handling of the pandemic. >> he didn't have the guts to take on covid and threw up the white flag. >> reporter: and commenting on whether he would take a quickly produced vaccine. >> only if it was completely transparent and other experts in the country could look at it. >> reporter: at the small socially distanced gathering biden telling union supporters he not trump would be better at digging the u.s. out of a slumped economy. >> the only thing standing in the way where they have the ability to make a decent wage is

heads to winston-salem, north carolina, today where the gop chair in that county is urging trump to wear a mask when he arrives for his airport rally adding, quote, there's no excuse. mona, kenneth. >> abc's newest correspondent faith abubey there live in washington, thank you and welcome. protests against police brutality continue on both sides of the country. in rochester, new york, night six of demonstrations in response to the death of daniel prude ended with no arrests overnight. things did become tense as officers were hit with bottles. earlier protesters sat outside the city's public safety building wearing little to no clothes, a reference to prude being naked when he was restrained by police. meanwhile in oregon, right wing groups and black lives matter protesters clashed in the state capital. at least two people were arrested after firing paint balls. police in portland have now reportedly spent $69 million on overtime during the protests. the most vocal critic of russian president vladimir putin is now out of a medically induced coma.

doctors treating alexei navalny in germany say he's improving and responding when he's spoken to. it's widely believed he was poisoned on a domestic flight are in russia last month. putin's allies say that accusations that putin approved it are absurd. a top opposition leader is missing in belarus kidnapped by masked men. her disappearance means virtually all of the opposition leaders have been detained or forced into exile. all have criticized the country's authoritarian president and recent election which they say was rigged. time now for a look at your tuesday morning weather. a strong cold front that's moving from the northern rockies into colorado could dump seven inches of snow in denver. it would be the city's earliest snowfall since 1961. farther west strong winds are increasing the fire danger, gusts could top 60 miles per hour from the southwest all the way to washington state.

mckenzie in the 1980s soap opera "knot's landing" has died. kevin dobson was 77. an urgent recall involving nearly 600,000 cars and suvs from hyundai and kia. hyundai is warning drivers not to park them in a garage until the problem is fixed. a brake fluid leak could cause a fire while driving or even when the car is off. the recall applies to the 2013 and 2015 kia optima and hyundai santa fe as well as some kia sorentos. used cars along with sticker prices are up. more are in the market for preowned vehicles to avoid taking public transportation or ubers. more people are also looking to save money in this uncertain economy. used car sales are up 22% and the average value jumped by 16%. new fallout this morning for novak djokovic. the tennis star was tossed from the u.s. open after accidentally

hitting the line judge with a ball. now he's facing another fine and he's defending the judge who is being attacked online. abc's megan tevrizian has more. >> reporter: this morning the on court outburst from the world's top tennis player getting more costly. novak djokovic slapped within an additional $7500 fine for skipping his post-match news conference bringing his total losses to more than $267,000. >> game, carreno busta. >> reporter: the fines and lost winnings stem from this moment sunday at the u.s. open when djokovic accidentally stuck a line judge in the throat after hitting a ball out of frustration. djokovic stunned immediately apologizing to the line judge but minutes later the u.s. tennis association throwing him out of the grand slam for dangerous or reckless actions with negligent disregard of the consequences. he was the favorite to win the u.s. open. >> referee and the staff did a great job of not taking into account his stature.

back now with something you never want to see on your bed. unless you're into that sort of thing. someone found this six-foot python on their son's bed in australia getting warm in the electric blanket. the homeowner called a snake catcher who safely removed it. prince harry and his wife meghan markle have declared financial independence. their massive bill has been paid in full. a spokesperson for the couple confirms harry has repaid 3 million that was used to renovate their home near windsor castle. they had to agree to pay back the money to british taxpayers after giving up their royal duties. harry and meghan recently

announced a deal with netflix to produce films and documentaries for an undisclosed amounts. more americans are heading south because of this pandemic. home sales in parts of florida have more than doubled in recent months largely thanks to people moving from the northeast looking for more space and lower taxes. meanwhile, beach rentals across the country are expected to be popular well into the fall because of people working from home. some property managers in beach towns say they thought this would be a slow year because of covid-19, but it's turned out to be busier than usual. as we head back to work and back to school this week, americans are asking new questions about the coronavirus and what the fall will be like. earlier i spoke to dr. yvonne maldonado about everything from a potential vaccine to an explanation as to why cases are still on the rise. everyone is still asking about a potential vaccine. president trump on monday said once again we could have one by november but i want to get your thoughts on that. >> i think it's too hard to say right now. we are still in the middle of a number of vaccine trials and the data are just not available yet. i would be really surprised if

the data were available by early november. >> "the wall street journal" reports the major vaccine developers are expected to release a joint statement this week promising to make safety the number one priority and not speed. what is your take on this? it seems rare that all the major vaccine developers would team up to release such a statement. >> i think they're worried that people do not have any trust or confidence in the speed at which these studies are moving, and i think we really need to be careful and make sure people see the data and that safety is the number one consideration. >> and more people are getting infected now than they were last spring. mostly older people getting sick. has that since changed? >> as the virus is spreading throughout many, many communities, of course, we're seeing that all ages are being affected, and i think originally we saw the older people who are now probably taking more caution and younger people who are

biggest issue today. they will subside tomorrow but the fire danger will continue because it is going to be so dry even drier tomorrow than it has been over the weekend through yesterday and into today. here's a look at your winds from diablo at 37 and up to 44 in knoxville creek. now, the wind advisory is out there. starts in just about half hour from now and goes through 11:00 tonight. reports or forecasts up to 70 to 80-mile-per-hour wind gusts are possible around mt. st. helena. that's where our radar is and in other people's lives interesting to see how that will turn off the electricity and affect us. higher fire danger even out of the north bay. the diablo range and santa cruz all under the high fire danger through at least wednesday. so, we've got to be vigilant until then. temperatures still very hot today and just maybe not the record breaking we had over the weekend. definitely not seeing the teens

to 115s out there like we had the last couple days but plenty of 100s especially in the east bay valleys and 90s around the bay and 80s at the coast and 70s at the coast. the marine layer is back. i'll show you why it's not going to make a big difference in most of our forecasts coming up. kumasi? >> thank you, mike. happening today, some schools in marin county are going to be open for in-person learning. with coronavirus case data improving, the county public health officer approved waiver applications for 15 different schools. they are required to comply with very specific plans, though. all other schools may not be far behind. they'll be able to reopen two weeks from today on september 22nd. if the county remains in tier two of the state's reopening plan for two consecutive weeks. all right. now here are the latest numbers in the covid-19 pandemic. the bay area including santa cruz county has now more than 93,000 diagnosed cases. total number of cases in california is at more than

735,000. the u.s. total surpassed 6.3 million cases with more than 189,000 people dying. santa clara county wants to give businesses a chance to right their wrongs when it comes to covid-19 health order violations. >> our team has engaged with over, well, nearly 300 businesses and of those 300, we only had three that resulted in fines. that shows you that together we could really accomplish a lot. together we can find a solution to this and just like all of you, my hopes are we get back to normal very quickly. >> according to the ordinance adopted three weeks ago, businesses in violation of health orders have a grace period to make corrections and that's exactly what two of the businesses did. their fines ended up being waived. happening right now in the north bay. the high winds that mike was talking about are fanning the flames of the walbridge fire which is part of the lnu lightning complex. new evacon
