have the okay to transition from distance learning to classroom instruction starting today. good morning, everybody. it is tuesday, september 8 lth. good morning, julian. >> hey, good morning, kumasi. happy to be with you. we want to rope in meteorologist mike nicco has a lot to talk about from the high winds and high temps, too, mike. >> it really is, julian, kumasi. hi, everybody. thanks for joining us on this tuesday. we just entered the window of most dangerous winds. at 5:00 the wind advisory began for the north bay. you can expect winds sustained up to 30. i even saw reports in the forecast of 70 to 80-mile-per-hour gusts possible on st. helena. that will fan the flames. if anything starts by pushing the tree down or power lines that sparks a fire, it's going to fan it and make it move rapidly. so, be prepared to act quickly today if more fires break out. we're at 48 miles per hour in diablo right now and 29 in st.

helena. you can see the winds are already strong. and look at this, the red flag warning through at least 8:00 wednesday. so, even when the winds subside, the humidity very low as we head through tomorrow morning. let's break down today. going to be almost as hot as it was over the weekend but not as quiet. the east bay hills still 85 degrees up there with those winds. so, expect 70s at the coast 80s in san francisco and 9 os and 100s for the rest of us. this could be the last day we say 100s. i'll show you the seven-day forecast coming up. here's kumasi. today is the first day of classroom instruction for hundreds of students in the north bay. marin county approved waivers for more than a dozen schools to reopen during the pandemic. education, as you know, one of the five issues that we focus on to build a better bay area. lauren martinez is set at a school that is set to welcome back its students.

>> we're in front of marin not all 15 will reopen, but they are allowed to do so. now, the county says based on the most recent local coronavirus metrics, the state has moved marin from tier one, it's most restricted status to a slightly more open tier two because of improvements and virus results. now, another 11 schools have applied for waivers and if they are also approved, they can reopen on september 14th, which is next monday. now, after two weeks at tier two, all marin public and private schools will be allowed to reopen on september 22nd. reporting live from san rafael, lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> thank you, lauren. we spent a week focused on education issues as students go back to school and all those stories are available on ab abc7news.com as well as our connected tv apps. scorching temperatures for

the fire crews across the state and pg&e warning in 22 counties of a public power shutoff. 22 wildfires burning across the state including the massive creek fire near fresno. it already burned over 135,000 acres with no containment at this point. kenneth moton has the latest. >> reporter: this morning firefighters across california are battling dozens of wildfires fueled by record-breaking heat. one of the largest fires outside fresno exploded overnight to 135,000 acres with 0% containment after already burning dozens of homes in the town of big creek. monday night, the california national guard attempted another rescue using a military shinook helicopter after reports of 14 hikers trapped at a mountain resort. but authorities said the mission was unsuccessful because heavy smoke prevented the pilots from making a safe landing. unlike this successful rescue over the weekend when a helicopter pulled hundreds of people to safety as flames surrounded them at a camp site. >> some were in critical

condition with burns or broken bones. to get aircraft to fly at night into the mountains is really something else. >> reporter: now concerns about the extreme fire danger spreading to other states. in colorado, a wildfire north of denver is now the largest in state history. burning nearly 100,000 acres. and in oregon, the air quality deterrierating as rare east wind funnel smoke in. one of the fires burning near spokane, washington. more than a dozen homes have been destroyed by a fire sweeping through the area. this resident posting a picture of the fire writing the entire town is gone. kenneth moton, abc news. and new evacuations ordered for sonoma county because of a flare up of the walbridge fire. jobina fortson at the live desk. >> good morning, julian. the walbridge fire part of the lnu complex has been burning

since mid-august the mandatory evacuation order issued for the portion south of mill creek road and north of sweetwater and east of palmer creek road. first responders have been going door to door overnight to let residents know of the evacuation. before the flare up, the walbridge fire had burned 5,400 acres and 45% contained. sheriff officials are asking residents to tell their neighbors about the order. kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. the largest of the fires burning is the scu complex it's burning in alameda, and santa clara counties. it's charred nearly 970,000 acres and 94% contained. the lnu complex in napa and sonoma counties is 91% contained and has burned more than 375,000 acres. czu complex burning in santa

cruz and san mateo counties has burned nearly 87,000 acres and now it is 80% contained. well, some of the people chased from their homes from the czu complex fire are finding that resettling comes with unexpected issues. some pepeople are finding it is just best to stay away for now. lifted its ongoing do not drink and do not boil notice but 500 are still under that order and more than 350 have no water at all. the fire burned seven miles of pipeline and water storage tanks, water distribution stations are set up to serve residents. >> you don't even have water service at our house. our house is half burned and lost two other homes completely to the ground. so, this is the water we have. >> one resident said that he got this text from pg&e saying that power will be restored next saturday. that is more than a month after the fire started.

especially in san francisco. the couple times we hit 100, it's been during the labor day weekend. i mean, maybe we're not going to look forward to it as much any more. let's take a look at what is going on. down in san jose you can see pretty hazy as we look north along 87. i want to talk about the planner since we're talking about the beaches. you will have the most comfortable air. most likely the cleanest and the coolest with temperatures in the 70s. but if you go inland and heading up the hills, it will get significantly warmer 80s and 90s and the fire threat will ramp up which most of us will be dealing with today. let's look at the winds and watch as we head through time. during the lunch hour 30 to 35 but then they come down just a little bit in the afternoon hours. but look at them explode again during the evening hours. the fastest winds this evening after the sunsets. that's when st. helena could reach 60, 70, 80-mile-per-hour

gusts. as we head through tomorrow morning you can see them subside substantially and orange is very high. red is extreme. you can't get any worse than that and that's up in the north bay right now. but notice we start to get some very high as we head towards the lunch hour and eastern contra costa and santa clara counties and even goes extreme there while the extreme spreads across the north bay. that's why we need to be super vigilant today and then as we head to tonight, the greatest chance is going to be over the north bay, once again. we'll talk about when those cooler temperatures get to your neighborhood coming up next. >> all right, thank you, mike. hope those cool temperatures get to people soon. the good news as far as traffic is concerned, no major blocking issues or crashes coming in from the chp right now. we are going to check out a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza right now and see the kipgzs out there. much busier at 5:09 this morning in comparison to yesterday for the holiday. i am seeing a bit of slow

under a red flag warning. high fire danger goes through 8:00 tomorrow morning. but at the top of the hour we came in to the wind advisory and expect the winds to pick up and it will get even worse the fire conditions as we head throughout the day. please, be vigilant. number two. pg&e says dangerous fire conditions is prompting a public safety power shutoff. outages started around 3:00 this morning at sonoma, napa and lake counties. new evacuations have been ordered for parts of sonoma county because of a flare up of the walbridge fire. first responders going door to door overnight to let residents know about this evacuation. good update here. we just learned 13 people trapped in the creek fire in fresno county have been rescued. that happened just after 3:00 this morning. the rescue to effort others still under way. number five. some schools in marin county are reopening for in-person learning today. the county public health officer approved waiver applications for

warnings or advisories. let me show you a couple things. little see saw and high pressure building and that low diving along salt lake city. creating the off-shore flow and our typical fire danger for the fall season. but look what it's also doing to places like denver. 93 yesterday and now 35 degrees. almost 60 degrees cooler and they're expecting possibly a half a foot to a foot of snow. talk about your weather whip lash. here we're just dropping out of the 100s in a few areas. still have plenty of 90s in the south bay and also on the peninsula. you can see the 70s along the coast and the 80s still holding on to downtown in san francisco and sausalito and along the east bay shore 89 in richmond to mid 90s else where and east bay valleys least we're not in the. 50s and 60s where most of us

county who live south of mill creek road west of west side road and east of palmer creek road. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with the threat of that and pg&e doing the public safety shutoffs in napa and sonoma counties. amy? >> hi, kumasi. yeah, they started overnight the power shutdowns and napa county has been spared so far. we see the lights on in this oakville area in napa county but sections of sonoma county have had the power shut off. that started at 9:00 last night. pg&e tells me a second phase of shut downs happened at 3:00 this morning. pg&e says these shutoffs could affect about 172,000 customers across the state. the forecast is calling for dry and windy conditions. pg&e is calling this critical fire weather with a high ignition risk. so, they're afraid a power line could fall and start a fire. that's why they're doing these power shut downs. some sonoma county residents

don't think they could handle another devastating fire. >> i'm going to tell you this, if this burns down, i will never come back. i would not drive up the hill because it's just been, well, you know, one thing after another. fire, fire, coronavirus, fire. i mean, it's been devastating. >> officials are watching the walbridge fire this morning. it jumped a containment area in the and an ev ev ev issued. 30 to 40 acres burned. the scheduled public safety power shutoffs will impact parts of sonoma, napa and lake counties. the forecast calls for these dry and windy conditions through tomorrow morning. pg&e says once the weather improves, then they'll head out to inspect their lines and see if there is any damage. they expect that to last about 12 hours and then they'd hope to get the power back on. so that could happen by tomorrow

evening. but it's still to be determined. reporting live in napa county, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> all right, thank you, amy. rescue operations for the creek fire near fresno are happening right now. jobina fortson is at the live desk with the new developments within the last couple hours. >> yes. and a positive development, julian. cal fire says they have rescued 13 people who were trapped on china peak. that happened just after 3:00 this morning. cal fire says the smoke cleared up which was enough overnight for a helicopter to land there safely. originally, officials thought there were 14 people trapped, but that was not the case. those 13 people are safe and were taken to the fresno airport. right now two rescue operations are under way. >> other helicopters in the air and national guard helicopter trying to reach hidden lake and also another search and rescue i believe from the navy trying to get into lake edison.

>> deputy nick schuller said on "gma" this morning he hopes they have turned a corner. record high heat and low humidity and strong winds are making this containment very difficult, kumasi. >> all right, thank you, jobina. well, the woman who poppwho popularized the gender reveal party is telling people to stop. jenna karunidis wrote a post on her facebook said, stop it. stop having these stupid parties. for the love of god, stop burning things down to tell everyone. no one cares but you. cal fire says a pyrotechnic device at a gender reveal party is what started the el dorado fire. it burned 7,300 acres in southern california. the device was supposed to emit blue or pink smoke but now the family could face felonies because the fire spread to forest land and it could also face felonies if the flames end up destroying structures or

other property. a fast-moving wildfire is now forcing evacuations. this is new video overnight of the oak fire which is burning west of highway 101. it scorched at least 1,000 acres since the started just after noon yesterday. cal fire says the flames have been moving north and more evacuations are possible because of the wind. happening today. some schools in marin county reopen for in-person learning with coronavirus case data improving, the county public health officer approved waiver applications for 15 schools. they are required to comply with specific plans. all other schools may not be far behind. they may be allowed to reopen two weeks from today on september 22nd. if the county remains in tier two of the state's new reopening plan for two consecutive weeks. we want to show you the latest numbers in the covid-19 pandemic right now. the bay area including santa cruz county now has more than 93,000 diagnosed cases. it total number of cases in

california stands at more than 735,000. the u.s. total surpassed 6.3 million cases with more than 189,000 deaths. santa clara county wants to give businesses a chance to right their wrongs when it comes to covid-19 health order violations. >> our team has engaged with over, well, nearly 300 businesses. and of those 300, we only had three that resulted in fines. that shows you that together we could really accomplish a lot. together we could find a solution to this and just like all of you, my hopes is that we get back to normal very quickly. >> according to the ordinance adopted three weeks ago, businesses in violation of health orders have a grace period to make corrections. that's exactly what two of the businesses did and their fines were waived. coming up, the big change coming to the louisville metro police department after the death of breonna taylor. would $10,000 cash be enough to convince you to move out of

california? hear from one woman who took the deal and left for oklahoma where the sushi isn't as good apparently. before we get there, we want to talk to meteorologist mike nicco who is tracking the intense winds this morning. >> sounds like a hot topic. how much would it take for you to get out of the bay area. especially right now. come on. well, temporarily it would be nice to leave, wouldn't it? and get rid of these winds, julian. they're ramping up. here we are at 8:00 and let me go through the forecast. 6:00. the winds are actually going to calm down a little bit as the atmosphere expands during the heat of the day and the winds won't be as concentrated. watch as the sun sets and the winds ramp up and even faster across the north bay during the evening and overnight hours. they're 40 to 45-mile-per-hour gusts and a possibility of 70 to 80 on st. helena and wake up tomorrow you can see the winds are much calmer and the wind advisory will be over. watch the fire danger index mainly up in the north bay and you want to watch the orange and the red.

oakland right now. westbound 24 just before the caldecott tunnel. what i'm learning from the chp four cars involved in this crash. two lanes are blocked as you approach the tunnel. speeds will almost come to a complete stop as you approach the crash site and i cannot tell if injuries reported here. but they have not given us an update to when this will reopen. you can expect the sig alert to remain in effect for a little bit. also just want to move over to an overall look here. if you look up top between oakland and san francisco you can see the yellow and now forming red lines on the bay bridge. looks like some sort of obstruction there. not a crash. at least according to the chp right now. i will keep you posted on what changes there. and as we move over now to a live look showing you san jose,

lake and cloverdale in the 90s for friday while the rest of us in the 60s, 70s and 80s. we'll turn it over to julian now for more news. >> thank you, mike. now an update on a story that got a lot of attention yesterday. this morning we're hearing more from a texas mom about the potential dangers of sanitizers around flames. kate wise was badly burned, as you can see, when her sanitizer caught fire. she rubbed it on her hands before she lit a candle at home. never a good idea. and the flames quickly spread. >> the explosion happened in a matter of two seconds and lit my entire body on fire. i heard my daughter screaming, mom's on fire, mom's on fire. >> she suffered burns to 20% of her body. she is sharing her story to warn others not to do the same. make sure your hands are completely dry before handling anything that might have an open flame. you can watch the full report coming up on "gma" at 7:00 right here after "abc7 mornings."
