>e' hearing how some small businesses are planning to move indoors and when other counties could follow suit. and good morning, everybody. it is wednesday, september 9. a lot to get to this morning. we want to check in first with mike to see what our forecast has in store for today. s ma above it,re still out ofthe noir two more hours. and check out the exploratorium, there is mist in the air. and temperatures in the 60s, 70s and 80s today.

happening right now, thousands of pg&e customers are still in the dark this morning. and the power might not be back on until tonight. so here is a look at the outage map. pg&e cut the power in nearly two dozen counties across the state, august because of the high fire danger. the purple triangles indicate those public safety power shutoffs. calistoga is one place that is impacted. the mayor says the shutoff was a necessary step because of the threat of high winds. at one point, there were half a million people in the dark statewide. crews will be working to restore power once the sun comes up. high winds and dangerous heat are making it difficult for firefighters battling dozens of fires across california right now. and i really want you to pay attention to this number. so far wildfires have burned about 2.3 million acres in

comparison to this same time last year. and this same time last year, just during a press conference yesterday, governor newsom said that he has had it with climate change deniers. >> i have no patience, i say this lovingly, not as an idea lo log oig, but someone who is interested in evidence but i have no patience for climate change deniers you may not believe it, about you yobut you experiences tell a different story. and three firefighters were hurt yesterday while trying to protect a fire station they're big sur. one of them is in critical condition. crews have rescued hundreds of people from the sierra national forest. climate scientists say this year's fire season is just a sign of what is coming ahead and they predict that there will be more wildfires that cause greater destruction because of

climate change. >> the large wildfires in california's history have occurred in the last -- [ inaudible ] and right now just over the last three weeks, we've had california's second, third and fourth largest wildfires. >> this year a dry wayneny season and low snow pack left plenty of fuel. fire and weather meteorologists with the bureau of land management have noticed a pattern in recent years. the wildfires are happening sooner than anticipated. some indoor businesses are reopening in santa clara and santa cruz counties. they improved on the tracker from purple tier to the red tier. and that means that indoor personal care services and gyms can start back up with modifications of course. but many business owners have been here before and that makes them reluctant about reopening. lauren martinez is live for us at the westfield valley fair mall this morning.

check out this video of the apocalyptic glow of the sun yesterday. the smoke and fog so thick in some places last night, it blocked out the sunset. now let's see wt happen today. you can see the winds are blowing onshore and as we head from noon into the latter parts of the afternoon and evening hours, look at that seabreeze ramp up. so it could be a comfortable evening for a dog walker. and look at what it does to the fire danger. we're moderate, which is yellow up in the north bay, now through about 2:00. and then once the seabreeze kicks in, watch us go down to blue moderate to green low to even no fire danger as we head into the evening hours. so we're almost out of the woods. upper 50s to low 60s for the

most part in the south bay and mid-50s to even mid-60s in other neighborhoods. as we head throughout the day today, you will want to monitor are the air quality with our app because it could change and become a little worse as it normally does during the afternoon hours. so all your outdoor activities should be revolving around that. temperatures in the 60s, 70s and 80s today. we'll talk about the 7 day forecast and a nice weekend coming up. first let's talk more about the commute. oakland has really been our hot spot throughout the morning. i'll take you there to the man so we can show you the road work has been picked up on southbound 880 in between 23rd and 29thues. but look at that stretch of traffic already backing up past 980. speeds are down to about 7 miles per hour. i want to bring in now a live look outside showing you the 880 at the coliseum camera in

oakland. on the left hand side of the screen, that is where you will see the southbound traffic. so you can see that the heavier traffic is beginning to move through. so you can expect this to pick up in the next few minutes. and now a live look showing you the bay bridge follow plaza. we were watching a backup earlier, metering lights came on at 5:47 . once you make it through the metering lights, the drive on the bridge is not too bad. but inching back towards that normal commute. and mark zuckerberg 1 eithering the record straight, how he is defending facebook from accusations that it has become too political. and a major shakeup for the oscar, the one new requirement that it is enacting that will dramatically shift what we are seeing on our screen for years to do. and taking a live look

>> yeah, let's take a look at the west wind at 15. look at how foggy it is, that is a great sign that our hot and just nasty air mass is being undercut by a nice seabreeze today. that is why the critical fire conditions will fade. spare the air today, could get worse as we head through the afternoon hours. and it will be an enticing forecast to get outside. here is a look at that area of low pressure that brought the snow to deny swrevedenver. that is crazy. but with that flow, it is backing that cooler autumn air into our neighborhoods and that is why we're seeing the 90s eliminated from the south bay. peninsula, mid to upper 70s. and 66 to 67 along the coast

today. low to mid-70s downtown, south san francisco, sal sausalito. and 82 to about 88 through your vall valleys. east bay shore, mid to upper 70s, richmond, hercules, berkeley, oakland. we still have a touch of heat in the inland east bay neighborhoods, low to mid-90s. check out tonight, even more widespread marine layer influence with temperatures in the mid-50s to the low 60s. and a little fog and drizzle like we'rerngescially higher elevations some of that mist and drizzle. so after today, we'll try to get rid of the 90s, we'll have 60s at the coast, 70s around the bay, mainly 80s inland. and we the put the warmest temperature possible in the region, you see a few 90s inland, but those will definitely be the exception. we will almost out of the dan r danger. and now let's turn our attention to ginger zee with what is coming up on gma.

upper parts in the hills coming out of the north, but the streaks you see, that is the seabreeze coming out of the west that is undercutting our fire threat, taking our temperatures down into the 70s, 80s and 90s. and increasing the humidity which is also going to help the fire conditions. and thousands are waking up in the dark this morning. pg&e cutting power as a precaution because of the high fire danger this week. check out the purple triangles, this is the company outage map. and amy hollyfield is live for us in calistoga this morning. >> reporter: we yujust got word from pg&e that as soon as the sun comes up, they will send the crews out to check for any damage. once they determine that no damage was start tuin the lights back on.

calistoga is one of the towns in napa that did have the lights turned off and some neighborhoods looked very dark last night, but you could also hear the hum of generators as many have bought them to power their homes because they have become so common now in the late summer and early fall. pg&e shut the pourer ower off b of the windy and hot weather. resident residents are doing what they can to get through. >> we have jen wrat a generatort of good wine. >> reporter: around 5,000 customers in napa county an 17,000 ctomers in noty are with. pg&e will head out later this morning because the weather has improved and they will start the work toward getting the power turned back on.

so hopefully by later today, later this evening, everyone's power will be back on. the weather right now is much better. it is pretty cool and no wind at all here in calistoga. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. thousands also had power shutoffs in sonoma county that caused some traffic confusion with no street lights along highway 12. sonoma county endured more than a week of the shutoffs last year. and overnight new evacuations near oroville as the bear fire is exploding in size. you can see the intense conditions, fire was engulfing this bridge. people were trying to escape. and the fire exploded in size now to near 58,000 acres.

>> it was such an anxious wait not knowing when they would be here. so it is surreal just having them here in the flesh. >> the smoke was so thick, there is no visual to identify the locations where the evacuees are. >> and the flames have destroyed at least 60 homes. at the live desk, it is not just california that is on fire. oregon and washington are burning as well. here is a man showing the major wildfires in the state. the governor of oregon has declared a state of emergency. parts of marion and clackamas counties are under evacuation orders and people struggled to get out. >> our horse trailer got gridlocked do you know eed dow we had to walk the 2 1/2 miles so we could get down on the hill. >> a large portion of medford

was ordered to evacuate last night because of a fire burning near interstate 5. it forced officials to close 25 miles of the highway down to the california border. now let's take a quick look at the three major wildfires in the bay area. the scu complex has burned more than 396,000 acres in seven counties. containment has edged up to 95%. the lnu complex has scorched more than 375,000 acres and it is 91% contained. and firefighters are still making progress on the czu complex. it is 81% contained and more than 86,000 acres have burned there. you can follow the latest details with our wildfirer tracker, it is updated with the latest containment information

think that we'll have some pretty fresh air and more comfortable for our activities. and look at the fire danger index. it is high in the north bay until about 2:00. and then watch the winds kick in and we have blue to green, low and then even some of the logos away, there is a lot of this by the time we get to the evening hours that have no critical fire threat. that is some good news. let's talk temperature, we're in the mid to upper 50s with cloudy conditions. a little mist in the air. so we're a little cooler than we were yesterday. here is a look at some of the fog. still 1, 2 and 3 mile visibility and it is thick over the golden gate bridge. we have the west wind at 14. so smoggy and then the smoke and the spare the air and hopefully

this will be one of the last days that we have to talk about that. let's talk more about the commute with joe bee injobina. >> all right, first thing up, i do have the golden gate bridge. so as mike was just stating, we do have fog in the area. and in orinda, the sigalert has been canceled. this is westbound 24 before the fish ranch road off-ramps. again all lanes are open, so things should pick up soon. also in oakland, southbound 880, we have road work this morning that was picked up around 6:00 a.m., but there is slow traffic past 980. and as we bring in the camera here live, you can see all those headlights making their way south. it will be busy as you move in and out of oakland.

mexico. that is pretty crazy. back here at home, that is the marine layer you are looking at from the exploratorium camera at pier 15. and 60s at the coast, 70s and 80s around the bay and mainly 80s inland. a few 90s will crop up in the east bay. and look at what it is doing to our air quality. other than ukiah, all of us are good green or yellow moderate all the way through the north bay and down into the monterey bay. so let's talk about the bay area air quality management district forecast. they have our 23rd and final possibly record consecutive day of spare the air alerts. but i want to show you the smoke forecast and you can see that we're kind of the dough thut ho doughnut hole. we'll have the wind starting to increase tonight and into tomorrow and look at that, it could be unhealthy tomorrow according to this forecast. and again on friday. so we'll have to revisit their forecast when it comes out at about 11:30 this morning. we'll do that during midday live or you can follow me on social
