good morning, everybody. it is friday, acceptsseptember . mike, people want to know when will it be safe to spend time outdoors? >> sunday. i'm still pointing toward sunday for sure because i think that the smoke will linger through tomorrow, especially the morning hours. so we'll talk about that. we are stepping in to some of the most dangerous air we've had during this 25 day stretch of consecutive spare the air alerts. you can see that it is very unhealthy to unhealthy. and that means that everybody is susceptible. unhealthy even down to san jose, livermore, concord. clean her around the monterey bay, but that will also change. and so it is smoggy out there,

especially the closer you are to the coast and up 101 where visibilities are less than a quarter of a mile. and there is no wind to turn over the atmosphere and make the smog go away. don't expect to see the sunshine today. take a look at these two videos shot. on the left, you see august 21. on the right, you see what happened yesterday. as the cameras pan on a clear day, you can see all the way to twin peaks. now you can barely see in front of you. julian glover is live in san jose. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, an issue out here in the south bay as well. and on that 25th consecutive spare the air day, nighmight mi as well call it spare the air month right now. we really want to show you the

difference a day makes. look at the video, on wednesday the day the sunrise looked more like the sunset, the eerie orange and yellow skies. it trapped the wildfire smoke over the bay area protecting some of the air quality. and then thursday, you can see the skyline disappearing and the thick gray smoke there, wind shifting mixing all of the wildfire smoke with our breathable air making air quality even worse. and i want you to listen into stanford researchers as they describe why inhaling this toxic air can be bad for your health. >> long term exposure to air pollution increases your risk of cardiac disease, your risk of strokes, your risk of asthma whi exasser bases and reduces your life expect

tower was hit. and in about 45 minutes, the san francisco fire department will hold a ceremony remembering the lives lost, the moment that the first tower fell. at the live desk, a fire that is contributing to the poor air quality in our area is actually now the deadliest fire in california this year. the 244,000 acre north complex fire burning in butte county has now claimed the lives of ten people. the butte county sheriff's office said remains of seven additional victims were discovered yesterday and 16 others are still missing. within woman is frantically searching for her parents. she fears the worst after remains were found. >> waiting for the remains to be identified that they found and in the same location. and i pray to god that it is not my parents.

>> in fresno county, fire crews at the creek fire say yesterday was a huge turning point for them. for the first time since the wildfire erupted last week, firefighters were on the offensive instead of the defensive. containment slowly inched upwar upwards, it is now theat 6%. president trump spokedolences a that the trump administration is offering its full support for those on the front lines. people in san francisco will now be able to get their hair done or get on a treadmill inside of a gym. monday barber salons and indoor gyms will be allowed to conduct business indoors but limited capacity. it really is a welcome sign for

hotels which have been hit really hard by the pandemic. >> at least have the opportunity to welcome tourism back, it is something is that we're very excited about. and we'll do it in a very cautious and safe manner. >> many hotel operators say while the news is good, they are not expecting many visitors to come to san francisco. almost no tourists and no con skrenkss in the future. and state university campuses will remain virtual for the rest of the school year. in a letter to the 23 campus community, tim white says that the decision is the only responsible one available to us at this time. white cited a number of factors including wanting to give students and parents plenty of tinlg time to plan for the rest of the school year. and you can find the latest on the map at abc7news.com.

issued by the air quality management district and this is their official forecast for saturday, sunday and monday. and what i have there friday is what we're dealing with right now, unhealthy to very unhealthy air. i think the smoke according to this forecast will be almost as bad tomorrow morning, but the air quality will increase by saturday and into sunday. so notice how we are pegged under the highest amount of smoke there and it never really goes away in our inland neighborhoods today. along the coast, maybe a little bit during the overnight hours, but not really. it will be trapped in that fog and that is why we're waking up to the same conditions tomorrow, but look tomorrow evening, we start to see an increase in the air quality and by sunday, it should be out of here. let's talk about the commute, how is it going? >> well, visibility is low out there. and we are following one crash right now. but it is not too bad, so let's

start with the golden gate bridge where there is a fog advisory. and advise and less th ability f check, i want to say that the metering lights came on around 5:40. pretty light there, but you can still see the smog in the air. and this is not just impacting the san francisco area and oakland, but look at all of the gray covering the roadways, that is the smog in the air creating the visibility issues. and the raiders left okay land for vegas, but another team could soon be taking their place. the announcement expected later today. and also we're hearing a positive message about a coronavirus vaccine, the time line that points to the end of this year and

welcome back. expect tens of millions of doses of fda approved coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year, this is according to secretary alex azar. three covid-19 vaccine candidates are currently in phase three clinical trials each involving 30,000 patients. some of the largest vaccine trials ever. the race to develop a vaccine has taken center stage in president trump's re-election campaign. he has suggested a vaccine could be available before the november election. still azar is insisting that has no bearing. >> politics and elections will play no role in the authorization of a vaccine by the food and drug administration. it will be based on data, science, evidence and the appropriate legal and regulatory standards. >> azar says that we could see data by october from a few of

these trials. a new study says eating out or going out for drinks during this pandemic is among the riskiest things you can do. the cdc says it tracked more than 300 people tested for cocalifornia. and everyone was asked the same questions about where they have been going, what they have been doing, were they wearing masks. and the cdc found that adults who tested positive were about twice as likely than those who tested negative to have gone to a restaurant in the two weeks before getting sick. oakland unified school district's food distribution program is getting a boost. congresswoman lee handed out food at just one of the 22 grab and go sites. this is just days after a waiver was granted allowing any student to take part in the program. >> all children deserve to be able to eat, there should not be

expanding its covid-19 testing to children 12 years old and up. all children need to have a parent our guardian fill out online registration form and those 12 to 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult during their visit to a testing site. around 2,000 cvs locations around the country have testing sites set up you. cvs says it has teamed up with more third party labs to process results faster, typically within two to three days. children have been found to escape the severe consequences, but a new report now says that more than 500,000 kids have been infected by the virus since the start of the pandemic in the united states. i have some good news to share. the numbering of new hiv cases diagnosed in san francisco hit a record low in 2019. the annual s16 t down 19fi.

in the bay area today because of all the wildfires. here is a live look outside through you our south beach camera. i'm tracking the dangerous conditions this morning. and mayor schaaf is joining us live at 6:45, we'll be asking her questions about covid-19 testing and reopening the city. good morning, everybody. it is friday, september 11th. straight to mike for more details on this air quality. >> and it is some of the worst air quality we've had during this consecutive streak of 25 spare the air alerts. we have places like willitts and napa and concord and san francisco unhealthy for everybody. but then you look at santa rosa, san rafael, fairfield, even worse there, very unhealthy. and the unhealthy air extends all the way into the south bay. so nowhere can we go to escape

it unless you wake up on the other side of the santa cruz mountains. in fact that is a look from our exploratorium camera and you can't even see across the street in san francisco to any buildings along the embarcadero there. visibility less than a quarter of a mile along the coast, san francisco, up through the north bay. and look at the winds, they are fairly calm. so we won't see anything that will stir up the atmosphere. so the dense fog advisory through at least 10:00, this will be our third consecutive day without sunshine. more coming this weekend though. today marks 19 years since the 9/11 terror attacks. and we want to take you live right now to new york city where two ceremonies are scheduled to happen this morning. there is also a ceremony happening here in san francisco. and covid-19 and the air quality

welcome back. let's open the weather window on the north bay where we're seeing some of the thickest fog away from the coast. san rafael, about a quarter mile visibility. your commute planner, it is pretty dangerous because of the smoke that is unhealthy and the reduction in visibility because of the fog out there. so you have to be careful. n95 mask will filter out the fine particulates and help you breathe cleaner air. you did see in the south bay, almost as smoky there. we'll try to reach the 60s at noon, a few 70s, but they will be the exception. back into the 50s and 60s this t evening. and images like this will stick around. and you can see how bad it is comparing the video on the left from the end of august todhis v same place. and it is all over the bay area.

arena? >> 39s have parents have to acc distance learning will be our reality for quite some time. there are no current plans to reopen particularly the public school system. we do have an agreement in place with our beloved teachers through the end of the calendar year. and there are a lot of resources for parents. so please just google ousd family center, there is a whole suite of online tools. my favorite is kahn academy, and they have one-on-one tutoring. so if you have a kid that needs extra help, get on that computer. and speaking of computers, we have started passing out the 25,000 laptops for families to own, not just to borrow, as a result of our fabulous campaign. >> that is awesome. i want to ask you about the

announcement for the medicare for all advocacy group. you c you c can you tell us why it was importan important? >> i was so honored when mayor garcia reached out for me to be co-chair. mayor garcia lost both his mother and stepdad to covid-19 just within the last few weeks. so this is personal. we have seen that more than ever health care should be an american right. it is one of the biggest drivers of bankruptcy and even health disparities. it is an idea whose time has come. so we've launched this effort to really rally local leader, those of us who are on the ground in our communities, to send a very clear message to this next congress that it is time for

morning. i wouldn't step outside unless i had an n95 mask on or something comparable because the air is that acrid. in fact that is our exploratorium camera at pier 15 looking back to san francisco. we can't even see from the end of the building to the embarcadero, which is a couple hundred feet. so we're breathing our worst air quality right now, air quality will improve this weekend and then we'll have a see temperatures next week. and we're right across the street, and this is our roof camera and you can barely see theado. we have dangerously low visibility and dangerous air vau quality. and you can see that it stretches into the north bay a valleys there. and the air quality will hang around through at least tomorrow. temperatures today 60s, maybe a few 70s, and those are up to 15 degrees cooler than average
