stronger onshore flows. there's fog out there. in fact, there's a dense fog advisory along the shoreline this morning, and as a result very, veriy foggy so do be careful. it is 59 oakland, 56 fremont. with the fog you can't see anything at all. half moon bay, petaluma, 2 mile visibility sfo, of a mile oakland. poor air quality but as we get into the later part of the day, the overnight hours we're going to see a stronger onshore push. the lighter colors indicate better air quality by tomorrow evening. the spare the air alert takes us through monday. very unhealthy air for us again today, unfortunately, but we will be looking at a more diffuse smoke layer meaning we will warm up a little bit more into some 80s today. a further look at the rest of

the weekend coming up. liz? >> all right, lisa, thank you. sports are highly in question this weekend for both the san francisco giants and 49ers. they're threatened by problems only 2020 could provide. we start with the giants whose game today is postponed after one of its players tested positive for covid-19. the team was ready to play the san diego padres last night but just minutes before first pitch teams got the news they wouldn't be playing. the name and condition of the giants player is being withheld for now. both teams are undergoing further tests and contact tracing. remember the oakland a's had a pitcher test positive last month and postponed some of their games because of that. the next series the giants have on the schedule is tuesday against the seattle mariners. as for the 49ers, the start to their season is truly up in the air. their scheduled game at levi stadium might have to be delayed or moved because of the wildfire smoke and unhealthy air

quality. kick off against the arkansas cardinals slated for 1:25 tomorrow afternoon. the nfl and local officials say it'll be a game time decision. if the air quality index is above 200 then they'll have to go to a plan b. but this morning levi stadium does remain hopeful. >> we look at the forecast, and looks like it won't be in that unhealthy range for long, which is where the nfl kind of looks into that forecast and making decisions as to whether to postpone or cancel games. >> whenever the 49ers play it won't be in front of fans, of course. sports bars have adapted by switching to outdoor only seating but this bad air quality could hurt their bottom line on game day. the city of oakland has opened two relief centers today to get people inside and away from the smoky air this weekend. bogue open at noon. right now the air quality index is hovering above 200, but just

about the entire bay area -- for the entire bay area which means unhealthy for pretty much everyone. it's especially important for older adults, young children or teens or anyone with heart or lung problems. but we all need to be keeping our time-out doors very limited. so try to stay inside, close your windows if you can. in the south bay the unhealthy air isn't staupg some from venturing outside. it was also the long awaited reopening of a popular san jose card room. amanda del castillo found despite the poor air quality many wir still willing to test their luck outside. >> reporter: the casino grand matrix got the green light to start operations friday night although air quality levels were in the red. patrons piled into this makeshift card room for the first time since the covid shutdown in march.

county. california has set a record this year, more than 3 million acres burned. and the governor was quick to shift the focus to climate change. >> hots are getting a lot higher, dries a getting a lot dryer, and the wets are getting a lot wetter. that's climate change. >> pointing to the raging wildfires, extreme drought conditions and record breaking temperatures, governor newsom criticized climate change deniers saying the evidence is right in front of them. >> what we're experiencing right here is coming to communities all across the united states of america unless we get our act together on climate change, unless we disabuse ourselves of all the b.s. that's being spewed. >> the governor signed a bill that will clear the record of prison inmates who work as firefighters. that means they can be hired by fire departments when they're released. and firefighters have had

little to no rest for the past month as they battle fires up and down the west coast. beginning to take a toll or has been taking a toll on so many. kate larson spoke to a bay area non-profit working to keep first responders healthy and on the front lines. >> the level of fatigue is high enough that we're seeing firefighters pull themselves out of engines during an active fire which is unprecedented. >> reporter: without enough resources to adequately staff the 100 fires burning in the west she says firefighters are coming off the front lines in shock. >> i'm having firefighters call unable to speak, physically shaking, not able to breathe, unable to take a deep breath. and those are the guys that are going to go back out until they can't, until we're going to have a permanent problem. >> reporter: she's the founder and executive director of the foundation that focuses on

physical and mental health rehab for first responders and veterans. >> my fear is we're going to continue to see our suicide levels rise, we're going to see our stress leave rise right now. >> you could be on an chain saw on and off with no rest, and all night you're using fire to fight fire. michael musgrove is a training captain with the fire department. he says there's no food and water and certainly no sleep when you're on 32-hour land shifts. >> we're not meant to be in fight or flight for that long a time. >> reporter: he's been with the foundation for a year. he says 75 firefighters more than half the department are now being treated at the facility. >> i'm seeing people stretched thin, but also i see resilience. i see people using these therapies. i see people getting better.

you can find the latest on this map we have here. it is all on our website abc7news.com and on the abc 7 news app. but the big question, lisa, is when is it going to clear up, this smoke? it's so eerie outside. >> maybe later tomorrow, yes. when we're looking at a pattern change as we get into next week. that's several days away and we have a pretty strong onshore push -- well, i should say the fog. and we're looking at limited visibility, so that is mixing with the fog, improving the air quality somewhat out there, but you know overall it's bad, it's unhealthy and this is the 26th spare the air alert and continues through monday. here's a look at live doppler 7 where you can see the fog right along the shoreline there, and as we look further we're going to notice that there's a system offshore. and that system is going to alow for some of that mixing. so let's see if i canads vance

that. yeah, if you look to the west there you'll notice there's just a little bit of a sigtu there, and t going to be an area of low pressure that's going to hopefully clean out our atmosphere. so our dense fog advisory continues to 9:00 this morning. it is very foggy out there. 53 degrees right now in san mateo, 52 redwood city and 54 in daly city. so do be careful, looking at the fog all over the bay area up to about 2,000 feet, and that will be allowing for a very gray start, and we'll see that smoke layer get a little more diffuse out there. we still have a few shadows out there yesterday from the sun. overall not a whole lot of change. it warmed up, though, yesterday as that sun tries to fight through that smoke layer and marine layer. i think we'll warmup, but look at this visibility right now. 0 half moon bay, petaluma, 0.8 oakland, and 1 mile in livermore, a mile and a half. so certainly it's going to take

a while to see and plan conditions. as we look at our current air quality this is what i mean with that air quality in place bringing in some fresher air at the surface here. you can see we're green everywhere except throught pret unhealthy air. we're talking about a fog advisory this morning and better air quality later tomorrow as that system offshore gets kicked closer to the coast. and as that does that'll increase our onshore flow, and that's going to help the air quality and allow that smoke to be pushed a little bit further away from us. so mild conditions and hazy skies through the weekend. that'll continue for sure today, and getting some impacts from this and that system offshore as we get closer to tomorrow afternoon when we get that better mixing. here's your saturday. it looks like it's clear but we know bet, right? we'll have that smoke layer. and looking at our sunday morning better fog making it all the way to our east bay. and then as it pulls back we'll

see limited sun but i think we'll see that better air quality right around the corner and increasing through the week ahead. here's another look what's ahead for your wednesday and thursday. a chance of showers up towards northern california that will slide south down into the north bay and that hopefully will allow us to maybe put a lot of this smoke behind us but not for today. looking at 69 in san francisco. hazy all throughout the bay area. that unhealthy air continues right now. it's not too bad out there. the accuweather seven day forecast looking at temperatures coming up a little bit day to day, and that is because we'll see less of that smoke out there, and into next week feeling like a bit of fall is in the air, liz. so there is definitely some hope out there, so don't get too bummed out. i know i was very bummed out. yeah, the atmosphere is going to continue to mix and, you know,

with another quick look at the weather. >> hi, everyone. we do have a lot of fog out there. like yesterday we're following suit with what we have this morning, a dense fog advisory. and visibility is really reduced out there. they're combining not only with the fog but haze and smoke. so the dense fog advisory until 9:00, here's a look at those visibilities. nothing, petaluma. half moon bay just under a mile. and oakland looking at just over a mile. in livermore down to 2 1/2 in mountain view, san jose, concord, and napa and just over a mile and a half up in santa rosa. so current air quality changes constantly. and we are lki at from good right at the surface where the fog is to unhealthy for the rest of the bay area. and as we look into the rest of the day today it's not looking so great, but we are looking at the changes coming into the

second half of the weekend. that sun is going to try its best to beat through and it was warmer yesterday. it's going to continue to be a little bit warmer today. i think we'll see some low 80s in our inland valleys, 70s elsewhere, and not a lot of mixing at the coast, so that means it's going to stay gray. we'll talk about the improvements, how we're going to get there and whether they'll last into the week ahead, and it's all looking pretty promising. >> it isn't just california experiencing wildfires, but dozens of other fires are burning to the north in oregon and in washington state. at least 19 people have died with the death toll only expected to rise. in oregon half a million residents are in vacation zones. abc news reporter ty with more. >> reporter: this morning the death toll expected to rise. residents there still frantically racing to escape. 1 out of 10 oregon residents now inbb ema who fear they

>> reporter: and the risk of indoor spread is greater. cities like new york and miami now moving towards indoor dining. >> if you go indoors of a restaurant with 25%, 50% or what have you, indoors absolutely increases the risk. >> reporter: as outbreaks pop up across college campuses new research suggests young adults may be at greater risk for covid complications than previously thought. a study published in the journal of the american medical association found 1 in 5 sick enough to be hospitalized needed intensive care. 1 in 10 needed a ventilator. outside dallas a 19-year-old hockey coach losing his life to covid. >> i just want him to be remembered for more than just a person that passed away from covid. >> reporter: marcus moore, abc news, dallas. few of us ever thought remote work would now been its six month for many of us.

norman powell on the run but marcus smart with a huge block. and the celtics go onto win 4-3. they'll face miami in the east finals. i hope you have a wonderful weekend, everybody. all right, let's get a check of the weather now with lisa argen. lisa, i really hope it clears out tomorrow night because i don't know how much longer we can take this. >> i know. i definitely agree it's been horrible and depressing on top of it, but we do see signs of improvements, and that's due to a weather system offshore. here's live doppler 7 we do have a dense fog advisory and visibility pretty reduced out there. this is what i want to show you. there's a little signature out here, an area of low pressure. and the winds are going to increase, more low clouds and fog, so a stronger onshore push. and eventually that system coming to the north of us,

joining forces with another system, and that should have a big impact on our smoke. right now the dense fog advisory along the shoreline here, and it is really foggy out there. right now temperatures in the upper 50s to near sunnyvale, how about that 48 in novato. visibility all over the place is really bad. anywhere from you can't see a thing from petaluma to half moon bay and across the richmond san rafael brirj the bay bridge. down to 0.8 whereas the east bay has about 1 to 2aybo that fog we have the smoke and then some mixing going on with it. so the air quality, don't open your windows yet. in fact, keep them closed. you'll see a bit of sunlight coming through. it should be kind of hazy out there once again and without a lot of mixing and that sea breeze setting up in the

afternoon. we're not going to do much to disperse the smoke layer. we need that afternoon sun or i should say the late morning sun to initiate that sea breeze and doesn't look like it's going to happen. uz whet ack chehe mixed with th quitnot today but the second half of your weekend as that low gets closer and we get some stronger winds. it'll be mild and hazy through the next several days. there's the fog. not much of an impact today as it pulls back. but as we get into your latesied and sunday, look at the fog that makes its way across the bay, and look at some better air quality by later in the day, that system offshore begins to get a little bit closer. so looking forward to that. and can we look forward to any rain? looks like most of the activity will be here in the pacific northwest, and we could see a few stray showers, perhaps a few sprinkles as early as wednesday into extreme northern california, maybe the north bay as we get into thursday.

but really falls apart. but looks like, yes, things are changing, and we certainly have some better air to look forward to. as weit thi current overhead, w get unhealthy out there but try to stay indoors. with 76 in san jose. we've got some low 80s inland, so it warmed up yesterday, and that air quality not great, but member a smidge better than your friday, the accuweather seven day forecast looking at hazy conditions through monday. that spare the air alert through monday. and as we get into the middle of next week it's going to feel a little warmer as we get into more sun, less smoke come tuesday maybe some drizzle on wednesday, and that slight chance of showers in the north bay coming into play on thursday. so we've got to hang in there, liz. >> we really do. all right, let's hope next week at this time we're talking about something totally different. crossing fingers. okay, a moment of unity against racism helped kick off the nfl season opener on

thursday, bullet some fans did not approve. some fans booed the moment at the texans-chiefs game. it comes as sports leagues try to reconcile how to deal with race and social justice issues. abc 7 news is focused on these issues, too, as part of our efforts to build a better bay area. in oakland one group is trying to bring a first of its kind black owned nfl team to the city. ansar hassan has more. >> our community is in a position where we are huge consumers. and it's time for us to become owners. >> reporter: ray is the founder of african-american sports and entertainment group. they want a black owned nfl team. >> we see that nobody wants to just stop this thing at the protest and our voices. we want to see the process of participation and equity be realized. >> reporter: the group sent a letter to the nfl in june and got a favorable rh a framework how to move forward.

they're considering a community owned model like that of the green bay packers. one option is joint ownership with the oakland a's, another to build a new stadium. either way he says oakland just makes sense given its nfl history. >> it would be an opportunity for us to actually come to the table and inject and revisit and reassembly the african-american dollar back into our community. >> reporter: this multibillion dollar plan means building up the surrounding area. they envision an education and convention center, museum and longer-term, more housing. >> anytime an african-american can control and own major portions of of real estate it puts us in a better position to do great things for the community. >> reporter: if approved it would still be several years before a team playspp like the oakland black chamber of commerce, several unions and city government. just in burton a spokesperson for oakland mayor libby shaft
