♪ good morning, good morning >> announcer: it's saturday morning. this is "gma." hey, good morning and welcome to our second hour. tory johnson is back bringing us "deals & steals" on saturday for the first time in more than a month. that is coming up. >> i love a deal. now to the latest on the coronavirus. six months after the world health organization declared covid-19 a pandemic, the u.s. has confirmed at least 6.4 million cases and nearly 193,000 deaths. now, this morning new reports that the trump administration interfered with cdc data on covid-19. >> but first, though, we want to get to the latest on the devastating fires out west. flames tearing through three states as the death toll climbs and 500,000 people are in evacuation alert zones prepared to leave if needed. ofonly smorning, m correspondent matt gutman is right there on the ground in portland with more on the arrest and the massive destruction from these fires. matt, good morning once again.

>> reporter: good morning again, dan. the suspect faces two counts of arison for allegedly setting the fires that nearly incinerated the towns of talent and phoenix, leveling 1,000 homes, killing several people. 50 people are still missing there. because of those deaths, he could also face murder charges. this morning, police say the fires that tore through the towns of talent and phoenix, oregon, destroying about a thousand homes and killing five people were intentionally started. >> we were able to locate evidence and determine that this individual is likely the cause of the fire. >> reporter: michael jarrod bakkela was charged with two counts of arson and multiple counts of criminal mischief. that as 500,000 people, 10% of or population, are in evacuation zones. at least two fires have converged, creeping closer to portland, whose mayor has declared an emergency. from space, nearly half the state buried under smoke.

so many with nowhere to live. we met emma and libby at a red cross shelter in salem, oregon. >> we had a neighbor who called us kind of hysterically screaming and said, get out. you guys need to leave. >> reporter: thousands clogged roads out of multiple fire zones, firefighters in ferocious battles to try to save homes. california's north complex fire claiming at least nine lives. 16 people are still missing. >> the debate is over around climate change. just come to the state of california. observe it with your own eyes. >> reporter: not only can you see it out here, you can taste it and certainly smell it. the air is almost chunky with smoke and ash. the bad news for folks around here is this is not going to clear out until at least early next week. whit. >> thousands of families impacted. all right, matt gutman for us, thank you so much. we do turn now to the latest on the coronavirus emergency and how kids may be spreading it more easily than we first

thought. plus, the allegations that trump officials purposefully interfered with cdc reports on the virus. abc's trevor ault is outside an elementary school here in new york city with more. trevor, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, whit. this appears to be the latest conflict arising between trump administration officials and th who according to politico have been pressured to report better news about this virus to better align with president trump's optimistic claims about it. overnight a spokesperson for the department of health and human services appeared to confirm and even defend these actions, telling abc, our intention is to make sure that evidence science-based data drives policy through this pandemic, not ulterior deep state motives in the bowels of the cdc. playing out as multiple reports appear to indicate children might play a larger role than the spread of the virus than previously thought. the cdc reports two utah child care facilities saw a dozen children get infected. that further spread to a dozen

word for it. host chris harrison calls everything on the show the most dramatic yet. well, fair to say this is one of the most dramatic endings in "bachelor" history. this morning, former bachelor, colton underwood facing a temporary restraining order filing from his ex-girlfriend and bachelor contestant cassie randolph. tmz reporting it alleges underwood harassed and stalked randolph after the pair broke up earlier this year. >> i can't do this. >> reporter: the reports of these allegations have not been confirmed by abc news and representatives for the pair have not returned requests for comment. randolph and underwood first met on season 23 of "the bachelor." their on screen drama causing the season's most memorable moment, underwood jumping over the fence in an attempt to leave the show. >> he just jumped the [ bleep ] fence. >> colton. >> open the fence, guys. open the fence. >> reporter: although they reconnected during the season finale, no future plan for an engagement.

>> take it day by day. figure it out. >> reporter: after randolph nursed underwood back to health after being infected with covid-19 they announced their split on social media. underwood writing in part in an instagram post, cass and i have been doing a lot of self-reflecting. sometimes people are just meant to be friends and that's okay. and that includes the wildfire emergency in the west. fires in california, washington and oregon burning millions of acres leaving neighborhoods covered in ash and making for some really hazardous breathing conditions. the death toll climbing to at least 19 people, and that includes a 16-year-old boy, i'm sad to say. dozens of other people are missing. one man is under arrest. he is accused of intentionally starting one of these devastating fires. new reports this morning that the trump administration interfered with cdc data on covid-19 to allegedly better align with the president's optimistic claims. now, this as the cdc says children might play a larger role in the spread of covid-19 than previously thought. dr. anthony fauci weighing in saying it may well be into 2021 before we return to pre-covid life. and in basketball, houston rockets forward daniel house jr. has been ordered to leave the nba bubble. the nba says an investigation found that house had an unauthorized guest in his room for several hours last tuesday

indoor tours stopped in march at the start of the pandemic. they began again on july 13th but closed after 4 hours when officials issued a new shutdown order. the smoke filled images of mt. diablo have been hard to miss this week. today an auction fund-raiser to support conservation work in the east bay is taking place. the 19th annual moonlight on the mountain is virtual this year. the items up for grabs are everything from wine tastings and artwork of the mountain to a private hike with your dog or the chance to name a goat on an artisan napa cheese farm. you can join in on the moonlight on the mountain website. it starts at 5:30 tonight. let's get a check of the weather and of course the smoke with lisa argen. >> we have very dense fog. the shark tank just a all kind there for unhealthy air now.
