breaking news. >> that breaking news is out of southern california. two los angeles county sheriff's deputies are fighting for their lives after investigators say they were ambushed and shot inside their patrol vehicle. a massive search now underway for this man seen in surveillance video tweeted by the l.a. county sheriff. we're not showing the moment the man opens fire. it is quite disturbing. the sheriff called the shooting a, quote, cowardly act. both deputies, a 31-year-old mother and 24-year-old man, just underwent suffragergery a short ago. each have only been with the sheriff's office for 14 months. we will keep you posted here and on the app with any new developments. good evening, eric thomas. rlier today in the bay are matts

this was the 26th consecutive spare-the-air day. tomorrow and monday are, also, spare-the-air days. abc 7 news meteorologist is here with a look at when things will clear up. frances. >> yeah, eric, it's going to take a couple more days and want to show you why it looked like that today. here is a look at the visible satellite image from today and look at all the smoke just blowing over the bay area. coming from our south and, also, our east. and we have high pressure in place, right now, but i am tracking a system that's going to move towards oregon. and that's going to bring us an increased onshore flow. even though tonight we have some very thick smoke, notice, tomorrow, with the smoke, we will see less smoke in the bay area and even decreases into monday. and the bay-area management district. but look at tuesday and wednesday. we can expect moderate air quality then and finally get

yay. life of pi. >> moorhead said she is okay on food and masks. she just needs one thing. >> just some clean air. >> people who are suffering like this are the reason that i have been fighting so hard to clean the air, and to open these clean air centers. >> reporter: oakland city council president, rebecca kaplan, has been vocal since july about getting prepared with clean air centers stating this was going to be a bad fire season. >> which is something that is expected to only worsed in the time ahead. and so, we need to make sure we are prepared to have all our community be protected. i absolutely am frustrated it took the administration this long to open something up. we can't just abandon people to suffer, in these situations. >> reporter: for moorhead, she is grateful for the air center and says she always tries to stay positive during a dark time. >> yeah. it has been. but i found some l-ndy always

li ted sla sunday. in oakland, lauren martinez, abc 7 news. >> poor air quality forced the city of santa clara to shut down many outdoor facilities and programs for the weekend. visitors saw a closed sign at santa clara skate park. officials also closed santa clara's international swim center and athletic fields. walk-up curbside services are suspended at the santa clara public library as well. two clean air centers opened in san jose. one at the community center. the other is at the tully community branch library. visitors will have access to socially distanced seating, water, free wi-fi, and power outlets. everyone who checks in must be wearing a face covering and do a quick health screening. both sites will be open from 10:00 in the morning till 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. and you can tekeep track of air quality levels where you live by using our website. the link is at the top of our home page. in santa clara right now, you

many of you replied, yes. a dry cough. someone else saying, yes, today, i had a bad headache while i was working. >> reporter: doctor of clinical psychology andrea sorbas is seeing increase in patients reporting signs of depression. >> people get seasonal effective disorder and that's just a form of depression, caused by, you know, clouds, rain, fog, and we're kind of experiencing that, right now. >> reporter: this couple is relying on each other. >> either one of us is sort of on the edge of a crisis, at any time. >> doctor recommends to reach out to a family friend or family members or pick up hobbies during these smoky days. >> do the best that you can while you're he to try that recipe you never tried. >> doing just that. on a regular saturday, he would be at the beach. >> instead, i am going to work on a puzzle.

camp fire in butte county. and there are dozens of fires burning across the state, right now. we've put together this map so you can see some of the major ones, like the creek and north complex. in california, alone, more than 3 million acres have burned, this season, with no end in sight. the august complex in mendocino county alone, the largest in state history. here is the latest on the north complex. that series of fires has now killed 12 people after three more bodies were discovered today. the fires have bufrned more tha 252,000 acres. cal fire says all those fires are now 21% contained. forecasters expect strong winds to continue and that will blow smoke and reduce visibility for firefighters battling those flames. the creek fire is now 6% contained. firefighters believe it will take more than a month to fully contain it. flames have burned 196,000 acres

across fresno in the sierra foothills and the creek fire still threatens more than 14,000 buildings. it's already destroyed 365 be 4, jt eight days broke out ago. some of the items lost in the wildfires can never be replaced. >> it was just i never wanted him forgotten. now, it's all gone. just -- it's just hard. you know? >> jenny's son was killed in action and now, the cabin built in his honor has been destroyed in the creek fire. she said the greatest lost is that she kept irreplaceable commendation medals and pictures at the cabin. they're, now, all gone. one firefighter working to save homes lost his own. >> i feel like i just got sentenced to a life in prison, in an aspect. because i lost everything and i got nothing to show for. >> around 45,000 people have been evacuated because of the creek fire. amid the devastation of

there is a pretty significant development with california's battle to stop the spread of the coronavirus. the state did report 4,100 new cases. that's above the one-week average. but the positivity rate. take a look. the seven-day dipped to 3.6%. and then, there's the 14-day rate. it is at -- rather, 3.9%. excuse me. this is the first time in a while we have seen both rates under 4%. the positivity rate is a good indicator of how rapidly covid-19 is spreading. body camera footage shows a police officer breaking up a party at miami university of ohio. the officer runs one young man's i.d. and that's when things really take a bizarre turn. >> i've never seen this before. there's an input on the computer that you tested positive for covid? >> yes. >> when was this? >> this was on -- a week ago. >> are you supposed to be

conditions as well and fog. even possibly some drizzle near half moon bay and along the peninsula coastline. temperatures in the low 50s to upper 50s. fremont, 58. san francisco, 56 degrees. tomorrow's temperature, little bit under the normal what we would expect for this time of year. san francisco, 66. so under hazy skies, once again. oakland, 71. san jose, 78. our warmest spots in the interior locations will be mid to upper 80s. a antioch, 86 degrees. cloverdale, 87 degrees. we are going to be stuck with the smoke once again tomorrow. but here is a forecast animation. here's here's how things play off. it starts off tonight. notice we're still in the pinks and oranges so we got more smoke, right now. and then, tomorrow, as the sea breeze starts to pick up in the afternoon, we will still see smoke throughout the whole day. but notice, we switch and will be in the greens, instead. so slightly less smoke. and then, monday, hopefully, the

>> there it is. proof that better air quality is on the way. look in that blue circle out there. off the coast of california. that image from the national weather service shows the cleaner air offshore. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. for more, now, we turn to meteorologist, frances lawson. when is it going to get here, frances? >> at least a couple days. that's because we have strong, high pressure right now bringing us winds from the southeast. in fact, you can take a look at today's satellite-visible image and you just see all the smoke blowing over the bay area and covering much of the state. but we are tracking area of low pressure that's moving in. and as it does, we will see an increased sea breeze. still a lot of smoke tonight overnight into tomorrow. but you notice, we start to see less smoke tomorrow evening. we start to move into the lighter greens. and then, even less on monday. so i'll have the complete accuweather forecast and let you know when you can head outside soon, eric. >> all right. we will see you in a few minutes, frances, thanks.

the air quality was so bad again today, it shut down plans for many across the bay area. but for those who did venture out, there was just no escaping the bad air. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has our story. >> reporter: we caught up with jamie after he ran eight miles along the san francisco waterfront on a day when the air looked like this. unhealthy. >> got to keep, you know, the fitness up and, you know, just use the tools that i have. so, so far, so good, with this -- this mask here. >> reporter: experts say smoke from wildfires is giving the west coast the worst air quality >>nee t a is not s ek. healthy. >> reporter: that bad air prompted alcatraz to cancel tours of the rock. >> did you want to go to alcatraz? >> yes, we wanted to. one of the main spots that we planned. but yeah. we are disappointed. we came a long way and spent a lot of money. but it is what it is.

>> we had got an e-mail saying it was cancelled. >> reporter: the city was invisible above chrissy field and the bay bridge appeared to vanish in the smoky haze. for the first time, in a long time, san francisco public library branches are reopening, this weekend. as clean air respite centers. >> the main library, chinatown, and mission bay branches are offering a room to chill out with some social distancing, a covid-19 health screening is required before entering. the oakland zoo tweeted it was closed saturday, due to ongoing air-quality concerns. in the north bay, the air wasn't much better. mt. tam, shrouded in smoke. mcginnis park in san rafael was closed due to air quality. pulmonologist dr. karen hardy urges everyone to stay inside this weekend. >> it's important for everyone to have a mask if they have to be outside. and to try and filter this kind of matter, you really would need an n95 mask. >> reporter: a bit of good news.

cleaner air could make a comeback, next week. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> it's not just here. smoke is blachkting much of the pacific northwest. this was the air quality as one man returned to the site of his oregon home this morning. it's now reduced to ashes. george lives near salem where the creek fire has killed at least four people and burned 187,000 acres. he said they didn't take a lot of important documents with them because they were so focused on getting their pets and livestock. >> we seen the fire that close. >> we just grabbed the animals. left all but the cat we cooperate fincouldn't find. and then, the cat, we came back two or three days later and we found him. burnt paw squs belly but other than that, we got him and he didn't die. >> that's bigger than the state of delaware. facebook is taking down posts suggesting the wildfires were set by extremists. the fbi and law enforcement
