building a better bay area for a safe and secure future, this is abc 7 news. >> the west coast wildfire crisis causing smoke-filled skies to dominate the bay area from the serious health effects to today's niners game potentially put on pause and mental stress for some, the gloomy air affecting us all. good morning, everyone. it's sunday, september 13th.i' . today's a record 27th consecutive spare the air day. meteorologist lisa argen is here. lisa, good morning. we are seeing some signs of relief? >> yes, now it's a little bit relative, but in pockets we're certainly breathing a little bit cleaner. our marine layer has enhanced and we are looking at breezier

winds that will head our way today but we have the fog to deal with first. here is a look at live doppler 7 where a dense fog advisory a lot like yesterday will take us through about 9:00. 52 in novato. 55 in san francisco with 60 in livermore. visibility in miles here, reduced to about a mile in santa rosa, over a mile in oakland. so it's bad everywhere, two to three miles anyoneland valleys and the best we can do is six miles out by the delta where the air quality is bad, unhealthy vacaville, rio vista. closer to the bay area, shows we're in the green for now and that is pretty good news, below 100 as we look at our index but getting down to santa cruz more unhealthy air and that will winds are expected to pick up. so throughout the day today, we're looking at some smog, spare the air alert, conditions, cooler by five to ten degrees. we'll see 70s to low 80s today, hazy, certainly wear your

massimass i mask out there. index below 100 at times and we'll explain how the winds will help us out during the week ahead with mist and drizzle and cooler air mass. >> thank you. this morning, we're following developing news out of southern california. a search is under way for a suspect the l.a. county sheriff's office says shot two of its deputies in the head in an apparent ambush. officials say the deputies are currently fighting for their lives. they were parked outside a transit station in compton. officials say both were shot multiple times and underwent surgery. both graduated from the academy 14 months ago.ai on t developing story coming up in a few minutes later in the show. back here in the bay area, happening today, football is back. the 49ers are scheduled to play the arizona cardinals in the season opener at leeveigh's stadium but the nfl is closely monitoring the air quality index for this afternoon's kickoff.

website, just go to abc7news.com/takeaction. new this morning, we're hearing president trump's first comments on his be briefed on the wildfires. >> our hearts are with all of the communities in the west battling devastating wildfires. my administration is closely coordinating with state and local leaders and we want to thank the more than 200,000 people that are working on it and 28,000 firefighters and first responders who courageously and bravely are fighting out there. they are fighting and it's dangerous. >> president trump staff says he's been talking by phone with governor newsom and state emergency officials. the president's visit comes as dozens of fires burn across the state, shattering records for size and total acres burned. we have put together this map, you can see some of the major ones like the creek fire and the north complex.

more than 3 million acres have burned this season, with no end in sight. the august complex in mendocino county scorched more than 846,000 acres, by far the largest now in state history. new video this morning of a scene that has become sadly too familiar. eerie nighttime footage of scorched cars and rubble in the town of berry creek right near lake oroville. in the same town is a beloved camp for child cancer patients and families. it, toos that been burned by the north complex fire. we're talking about camp okaizu. their facility sustained significant damage. abc 7 has followed this summer camp for almost two decades but now the camp needs our help. this morning we explain what we can do. >> reporter: nestled on aittlwa affected by cancer.

>> it feels so sad that scarred. >> reporter: this week, the north complex burned through the camp which jany daws five children have all attended her youngest, eva, diagnosed with a rare lung tumor when she was six months old. >> so many children have scars and okaisu now has its scars. >> the place might be gone through the people aren't. >> reporter: for ana and other h kids whose siblings have cancer. >> it helped me understand that there's other people going thug t together. >> reporter: etha is 8, cancer free and a three-year veteran camper. >> i love swimming there. i also love, i also love the camp fires, those are really fun. >> reporter: but because the cancer is genetic, every three months she has scans, blood draws ande ys okaizu is somethio

moments of hope. butte county sheriff's office sthard pictures of a puppy being rescued in that same town of berry creek. the puppy has some minor burns you can see the little puppy there, but is now being cared for in chico. authorities were able to track down the property owner who had to rush to evacuate. very sweet little puppy and some good news, we need a little good news right now, lisa. >> absolutely, liz. we're getting it in terms of our air quality, in fact around the bay where that fog is, air quality is a little bit better for now. we have haze and fog, temperatures in the 50s and 60s but we're getting an increase of our marine layer, going to pump up the winds, clean out the hea forecast is next. >> thank you. also next -- >> that was a cowardly act, the two deputies were doing their job. >> an ambush attack on two deputies in compton and now the all-out search overnight for the suspect, caught on camera

we want to show you some of the surveillance video tweeted yesterday by the l.a. county sheriff, investigators say the deputies were inside their patrol vehicle outside this light rail station in compton, we are not showing the moment he opens fire. it is of course very disturbing. our abc sister station in los angeles says both deputies were shot in the head and are in critical condition. a 31-year-old mother and a 24-year-old man. they have each been with the sheriff's department for a little more than a year. the l.a. county sheriff saying this just late last night. >> that was a cowardly act. the two deputies were doing their job, minding their own business and watching out for the safety of the people on the train and seeing somebody just walk up and start shooting on them, it's, it pisses me off. >> so far detectives haven't had a detailed description of the shooter other than it was this person being a man wearing dark

clothes at the time. we will keep you posted here and on our abc 7 news app as soon as we get any updates on this. we're seeing pretty significant developments in california's battle to stop the spread of the coronavirus. thstate did report sewhh is ah. the seven-day dipped to 3.6%, and there's the 14-day rate. it is at 3.9%. this is the first time in a long time that we have seen both rates under 4%. the positivity rate is how many people are coming up positive of those that are tested, and a good indicator of how rapidly covid-19 is spreading. so a little more positive news that we need. a big day for so many in the city the f march, san francisco will begin to really reopen. here is what's going to be allowed. tattoo parlors are also included here. keep in mind, these services

april 4th of 2021. company officials expect big demand at that time. just born resumes limited production in may after shutting down temporarily because of the pandemic. lisa, that was an interesting video at the university of miami in ohio, just you know, i don't know. college kids are going to be college kids. >> yes. >> it's a tough situation for everybody. >> i have one myself, and they're nervous for sure. they want to get together and yes, you can't, so it definitely is a tough time and we are looking at slightly better air quality for us and in the days ahead the weather should cooperate but for the parts of the mountains it's going to turn into another breezy scenario for relative humidity. for us t might be better for others, not so much and we are all in this together for sure in terms of the west coast in battling the fire. live doppler 7 right now we have some dense fog in pockets, not

quite as dense as yesterday, but all eyes are on a system to the west of us, that will bring in a wind shift and really push this smoke out of the bay area as we get into the next 24 to 36 hours. between now and then, there are small increments of moderate air quality but still overall it is unhealthy out there. first the fog, though, anywhere from less than a mile to five miles in san carlos so that's better but still just over a mile in oakland and petaluma with two to three miles from concord to livermore and this takes us through about 9:00. unhealthy spare the air alert today and tomorrow. we have pockets of better air looks like tuesday and wednesday maybe not a spare the air day. we'll wait and see as we get to a better part of the forecast. but as we look right now at the air quality, notice the greens right here for san jose, napa, san rafael, indicating better air, san francisco, kochland, redwood city, not the case out by the delta though, you get

down to santa cruz and we're lo the wind shift is going to play a big role. pockets of smokey air throughout the day today into monday and looking at increasing sea breeze today, improving the air quality in spots, and then moderate air quality perhaps by tuesday. here is a general forecast that shows us over the pinks and oranges, 9:00 this morning, but look what happens, it looks like this is going to lift on out and lighter shading here of blue indicates less smoke, this is sunday night and as we take it into monday morning, the trend continues as it looks like the smoke will be pushed into the sierra nevada. so the wind profile at the surface here 1:00 shows the winds here double digits, so that m w thugthe l jt as acast, you'll notice that we have a pretty compact area of low pressure here, bringing some rain into the sierra nevada.

that's going to bring gusty winds and dry relative humidity for the mountains but for us, it means a continu smoke being pushed on out of here. so some good news/bad news situation there, temperatures today will be cooler, 70s in oakland. 75 in fremont. 64 along its coast and the accuweather seven-day forecast looking at the smoke and haze and pockets of better air today and tomorrow, looking at the numbers slightly cooler and into tuesday and wednesday, the system gets closer, could get warmer due to the mixing out of the marine layer and cooler with the chance of showers by the end of the week so looking better. liz? >> my pke y said less. at? less smoky? >> stay awake. >> thanks, lisa. back to the ballroom tomorrow night, in a "dancing with the stars" season that has plenty of surprises. carol baskin's appearance may be the biggest. hear what song

as we look at our fog, we still have that dense fog advisory third morning in a row until 9:00, from a mile at half moon bay to six miles at the delta. be careful, it is dense in pockets and low 50s in the north bay, 60 in san jose, as well as livermore, and just like that, we go from better air to not so great out there, as we are currently looking at unhealthy conditions, so it will be changing from moderate to unhealthy throughout the day today, as we still are stuck into that light wind pattern. so throughout the afternoon, by 10:00, 11:00, we have 60s and 70s. it's a cooler kay, winds will increase. we have 80s inland, and as those winds increase, the fog layer will also increase. so small steps to getting to better air but still under that spare the air alert today, a check on when things will really begin to clean out in a big way and when we see in a few minutes. liz? >> sounds good, thank you, lisa.

the unhealthy air quality is shutting down weekend plans for many across the bay area, but some did decide to venture outside, and as abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard shows us, there was no escaping the bad air. >> when i try to get 14 in, maybe 15 today. >> reporter: we caught up with jamie hailpern after he ran eight miles on a day when the air looks like this, unhealthy. >> keep the fitness up and just use the tools that i have, and so far, so good with this mask here. >> reporter: experts say smoke from wildfires is giving the west coast the worst air quality in the world this week. >> we can feel that it is not healthy. >> reporter: that bad area promptedraz to cancel tours of the rock. did you want to go to alcatraz? >> we wanted to, one of the main spots that we planned but we are disappointed. we came all the way and spent a lot of money to see the places but yes t is what it is. >> we had gotten an email it was

canceled so came in to see if we could reschedule. >> reporter: the city was invisible above chrissy field and the bay bridge appeared to vanish in the smoky haze. spran public library branches are reopening this weekend as clean air respite centers. the main library, chinatown and mission bay branches are offering a room to chill out with social distancing, a covid-19 health screening is required before entering. the oakland zoo tweeted it was closed saturday due to ongoing air quality concerns. in the north bay, the air wasn't much better. mt. tam shrouded in smoke, park closed due to poor air quality. stanford pulmonologist dr. karen hardy urges everyone to stay inside this weekend. >> it is very dangerous to be out in this kind of air, so it's important for everyone to have a mask, if they have to be outside, and to try and filter this kind of matter, you really would need an n-95 mask. >> reporter: a bit of good news,

cleaner air could make a comeback next week. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> the pacific northwest is also dealing with a historic emergency with a deadly wildfires there displacing tens of thousands of people. take a look at the air quality as one man returned to the site of his oregon home on saturday. now reduced to ashes. he lives near salem where the beach creek fire has killed at least four people, and burned 187,000 acres. he said they didn't take a lot of important documents with them because they were so focused on getting their pets and livestock. >> we've seen the fire that close, we grabbed the animals, left all but the cat, we couldn't find and the cat we came back two or three days later and we found him, burnt paws and burnt belly but other than that, we got him and he didn't die. >> wow. more than 2,500 square miles have burned in oregon and washington in recent days, more than the state of delaware. and there are of course also

hall, george stephanopolous will host a live event giving undecided voters a chance to ask president trump their important questions before november. watch "the president and the people" this tuesday at 6:00 p.m., right here on abc 7. this morning, sacramento county is tweeting their u.s. inration with an explainer circulated by usps and colorado's secretary of state is suing the usps over it. you may have gotten these in the mail to tell what you to do if you're mailing in your vote but sacramento county tweeted not all of the information applies to california residents. the third bullet says you must request a mail-in ballot at least 15 days prior to election day. that is not the case in california, where all registered and active voters in california will receive a mailed pal lot starting on october 5th. a usps spokesperson told cnn the main message is the same for everyone, plan ahead. california ballots will be

okay some good news for b.a.r.t. riders. ridership is picking back up so the agency is adding more trains on select lines, trains will run more frequently during peak commute hours. b.a.r.t. says this is the largest weekday service increase since the pandemic hit. service hours will remain 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekends. also starting tomorrow, alameda county will start allowing more cars for ppl will be able to enjoy live performances like concerts, movies and relingious ceremonies. the county's vehicle based gathering order will increase the number of cars from 200 to 400 at these types of events at the alameda county fairgrounds and the coliseum. concessions can be sold but with some restrictions.

have a great sunday. we look at the weather, the big story is the smoke, all we can think about but the hope is that it will clear out. >> looks like the winds increasing today and that should help us out, right now light winds. live doppler 7 indicatingn row as yesterday and friday but it's still out there. we are looking at a system, a trough of low pressure that will move into the bay area, really move into the pacific northwest and that's really going to get the winds going, provide an additional wind shift, bring some cooler air as we get towards the upcoming work week. so looking at numbers right now, 53 in san rafael. 52 in santa rosa. 56 in fremont. 60 in san jose and the visibility is not great out there, anywhere from just over a mile in oakland and petaluma, to three-quarters of a mile half moon bay and just about three miles in concord, two miles san jose and livermore. air quality today and tomorrow unhealthy in the red zone, just about under 200, and then looking at tuesday and wednesday
