it's sunday, september 13th. i'm liz kreutz. thank you for joining us. today's a record 27th consecutive spare the air day. meteorologist lisa argen is here. lisa, good morning. we are seeing some signs of relief? >> the forecast is pointed in the right direction. we have unhealthy air. count me as one of the ones taking a toll with the weather. it's been hard on us all staying inside and having day after day of the very unhealthy air. live doppler 7 picking up on the fog, the dense fog advisory through about 9:00, not as foggy as it's been the past couple days but check out oakland over a mile is not great and a mile and a half in petaluma, a mile on the coast, six miles by the delta. temperatures from the low to mid-50s in the north bay to near 60 in brentwood. the reds indicate the unhealthy air once again, our spare the air alert. onshore flow is with us, we need for it to strengthen today and as it does, it should help out

in small amounts as we get looking bett.ater afternoon,ayn for the day today, we've got the smoggy and cooler conditions on the way, anywhere from five to seven degrees cooler. hazy skies, we'll talk about low to mid 80s inland, mid-70s around the bay, certainly keep that n-95 with you, if you have to head outside but we are looking at some improvements. we'll talk about it in just a few minutes. liz? >> lisa, thank you. this morning, we're following developing news out of southern california. a search is under way for a suspect the l.a. county sheriff's office says shot two of its deputies in the head in an apparent ambush. officials say the deputies are currently fighting for their lives. they were parked outside a transit station in compton. officials say both were shot multiple times and underwent surgery.

both graduated from the academy 14 months ago. we'll have more details on this developing story coming up in a few minutes. back here in the bay area, happening today, football is back. the 49ers are scheduled to play the arizona cardinals in the season opener at levi's stadium but the nfl is closely monitoring the air quality index for this afternoon's kickoff. if the aqi is above 200 for a consistent amount of time, the game could be postponed to a later time today, move to tomorrow or other options will be explored. >> if it happens sunday, my understanding is if it gets to 200, we'll start discussing what to do with the game. i don't think that's my decision at all. i know it's not, thank goodnessf all the esntl rkav the le fires for us throughout the nation especially on the west coast. ♪ >> kickoff scheduled for 1:25 this afternoon. in the east bay, here is what the air likes in oakland

near the old oracle arena from our 880 camera. very smoky. i'm sure a lot of you saw that. this morning talk from the arena and oakland convention center it could become long-term clean air centers. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez has more on those chances. >> i brought my chrome book and my hot spot that i have my wifi through. >> reporter: oakland resident tedi morehead is charging her devices at the diamond branch library which has now opened as a clean air center. >> i could feel my breathing getting a little tight so i decided to come over here. >> reporter: morehead became homeless it's the end of june and now sleeps in a car exposed to all the smoke outside. this library, which is donating free books to those that come is one of four locations the city of e. >> that's a book, i got an orange book, life of pi, could read this over and over again.

>> reporter: morehead is okay on food and masks, just needs one thing. >> just some clean air. i think everybody needs some clean air. >> people who are suffering are the reason i've been fighting so hard to clean the air and to open these clean air centers. >> reporter: oakland city council president rebecca kaplan has been vocal since july about getting the city prepared with clean air centers stating this was going to be a bad fire season. >> which is expected to worsen in the time ahead so we need to make sure we are prepared to have all of our community be protected. i absolutely am frustrated that it took the administration this long to open something up. we can't abandon people to suffer in these situations. grefor the air center and says she always tries to stay positive during a dark time. >> yeah, it has been, but i found some light and my kids are always light. >> reporter: in oakland, lauren martinez, abc 7 news. happening today, two clean

first responders who courageously and bravely are fighting out there. they are fighting and it's dangerous. >> president trump's staff says he's been talking by phone with governor newsom and state emergency officials. later in the show, we'll have more on what he said during his rallies in nevada. the president's visit comes as dozens of fires burn across the state, shattering records for size and total acres burned. we have put together this map, you can see some of the major ones like the creek fire and the north complex. more than 3 million acres have burned this season, with no end in sight. the august complex in mendocino county scorched more than 846,000 acres, by far the largest now in state history. new video this morning of a scene that has become sadly too familiar. eerie nighttime footage of scorched cars and rubble in the

town of berry creek right near lake oroville. in the same town is a beloved camp for child cancer patients and families. it, toos that been burned by the north complex fire. we're talking about camp okaizu. their facility sustained significant damage. abc 7 has followed this summer camp for almost two decades but now the camp needs our help. this morning, kate larsen explains what we can do. >> reporter: nestled on a little lake in butte county the camp was a refuge for children affected by cancer. >> it feels so sad that memori has just been so scarred. >> reporter: this week, the north complex burned through the camp which jany dawes five children have all attended her youngest, eva, diagnosed with a rare lung tumor when she was six months old. >> so many children have scars and okaisu now has its scars.

>> the place might be gone right now, but the people definitely aren't. >> reporter: for ana and other kids whose siblings have cancer. >> it helped me understand that there's other people going through this and that we need to go through it together. >> reporter: etha is 8, cancer free and a three-year veteran camper. >> i love swimming there. i also love, i also love the camp fires, those are really fun. >> reporter: but because the cancer is genetic, every three months she has scans, blood draws and treatments. she says okaizu allows her to feel something important between all the visits to the doctor. >> we pretend we're normal. >> it was such an important and magical place for so many people for such a long time. >> reporter: dr. mike amalon is a pediatric oncologist at stanford. kids now camp every summer, many of them his patients.

welcome back been we are closely following developing news in los angeles. a huge response from law enforcement overnight. you're looking at brand new video this morning, take a look, the search is still out for the person seen shooting and gravely injuring two l.a. county sheriff's deputies in what appears to be an ambush attack. both are fighting for their lives this morning. we want to show you some of the surveillance video tweeted yesterday by the l.a. county sheriff, investigators say the deputies were inside their patrol vehicle outside this light rail station in compton, we are not showing the moment he opens fire. it is of course very disturb our abc sister station in los angeles says both deputies were shot in the head and are in critical condition. a 31-year-old mother and a 24-year-old man.

they have each been with the sheriff's department for a little more than a year. the l.a. county sheriff saying this just late last night. >> that was a cowardly act. the two deputies were doing their job, minding their own business and watching out for the safety of the people on the train and seeing somebody just walk up and start shooting on them, it's, it pisses me off. >> so far detectives haven't had a detailed description of the shooter other than it was this person being a man wearing dark clothes at the time. we will keep you posted here and on our abc 7 news app as soon as we get any updates. just horrific. we're seeing pretty significant developments in california's battle to stop the spread of the coronavirus. the state did report 4,100 new cases which is above the one week average but take a look at the positivity rates. the seven-day dipped to 3.6%, and there's the 14-day rate.

it is at 3.9%. this is the first time in a long time that we have seen both rates under 4%. the positivity rate is how many people are coming up positive of those that are tested, and a good indicator of how rapidly covid-19 is spreading. some good news, just earlier this summer we were over 7%, maybe almost teetering at 8%, so good job to all of us. a big day for so many in the city tomorrow, and that is because for the first time since march, san francisco will begin to really reopen. here is what's going to be allowed. tattoo parlors are also included here. keep in mind, these services must follow safety guidelines with strict capacity limits, hotels will be allowed to sleep people who aren't essential workers. some hotel owners we've spoken to in the past few days say that andonventions come wn

>> actually no but somebody in my house is so it's always a sothg t at easter. good morning, everyone. we're looking at the unhealthy air, air quality indexes anywhere from 160 to 175, well under the 200 for the niners, if you're wondering, but looks like they, my guess is they probably will play but looking at the red zone and that will, is expected to improve slightly throughout the day today as our winds increase offshore. here is a look at live doppler 7 and the fog is with us again, third day in a row that we have the dense fog advisory this morning, but we are certainly looking at the system offshore that is going to head tolement going to clean out our air, increase the winds but it's also going to bring increasing fire danger before it gets here for northeastern california, for oregon, and parts of nevada.

so that's going to bring fire weather watch, low relative humidity, and then the cooler temperatures. so even though it's the better news for our air quality, it's not great for everyone and we certainly don't need any more fires around here. 54 in napa. 52 in santa rosa. 59 in hayward. 61 in san jose and the fog is certainly out there, anywhere from one to two miles from oakland to hayward and mountain view two-mile visibility in san jose a mile in santa rosa. so air quality unhealthy today and tomorrow in the very unhealthy range and looking at some improvements tuesday and wednesday, not to say we won't see any hazy sun. we saw that yesterday but still, with the air quality indices well over 100, it is not safe to go should have that n-95 with you. so napa, san rafael looking at the red unhealthy air from san francisco and oakland and fremont, down to san jose. so really no changes there, but those winds later on today

should be helping us out and you may have, saw a little bit of an improvement yesterday, not enough to go outside and as we look at the golden gate there is the fog. smoky air through tomorrow, the sea breeze increases taking us in the direction we want to be in. moderate air quality tuesday. the general pattern under the pink and orange but it lifts to the north and east, as those winds increase, here we are tonight, and as we get into your monday, the lighter shades, the yellow, the blue indicate that better air, the smoky air being pushed into the sierra nevada but the winds throughout the afternoon, here the e, increasing through the delta, and that's what we would like, but as we look at the upper level pattern, this is the system that's going to increase the fire danger from northern california to southern oregon, t crease omidity he temperatures and re from the 70s in san

54 half moon bay and the fog from the exploratorium camera, it's unhealthy with the particles mixed in. 57 by the delta and a little bit better in terms of visibility out that way, one to two miles, oakland and hayward and a mile in petaluma. overnight things improve, we're back to bad again or unhealthy with the red, all over the bay area, all the way down through santa cruz. later in the that should help u between now and then, we're still around 160 to 170 in terms of the indices for the bad air and you know up to 200, it gets really bad so we're still in that range, and by the afternoon, temperatures cooling off. we will have some 80s inland but we're about five to seven degrees cooler due to the winds increasing, the onshore flow and a soffs for us, we'll talk about it but also going to increase the fire danger to the north of us coming up in a few minutes.

liz? >> thank you. the unhealthy air quality is shutting down weekend plans for many across the bay area, but some did decide to venture outside, and as abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard shows us, there was no escaping the bad air. >> when i try to get 14 in, maybe 15 today. >> reporter: we caught up with jamie hailpern after he ran eight miles along the san francisco waterfront on a day when the air looked like this, unhealthy. >> keep the fitness up and just use the tools that i have, and so far, so good with this mask here. >> reporter: experts say smoke from wildfires is giving the west coast the worst air quality in the world this week. >> we can feel that it is not healthy. >> reporter: that bad air prompted alcatraz to cancel tours of the rock. did you want to go to alcatraz? >> we wanted to, one of the main spots that we planned but we are disappointed. we came all the way and spent a lot of money to see the places but yes it is what it is.

>> we had gotten an email it was canceled so came in to see if we could reschedule. >> reporter: the city was invisible above chrissy field and the bay bridge appeared to vanish in the smoky haze. san francisco public library branches are reopening this weekend as clean air respite centers. the main library, chinatown and mission bay branches are offering a room to chill out with social distancing, a covid-19 health screening is required before entering. the oakland zoo tweeted it was closed saturday due to ongoing air quality concerns. in the north bay, the air wasn't much better. mt. tam shrouded in smoke, guinness park in san rafael was closed due to poor air quality. stanford pulmonologist dr. karen hardy urges everyone to stay inside this weekend. >> it is very dangerous to be out in this kind of air, so it's important for everyone to have a mask, if they have to be outside, and to try and filter this kind of matter, you really would need an n-95 mask. >> reporter: a bit of good news,

cleaner air could make a babc 7 news.t week.col >> the pacific northwest is also dealing with a historic emergency with deadly wildfires there displacing tens of thousands of people. take a look at the air quality as one man returned to the site of his oregon home on saturday. now reduced to ashes. he lives near salem where the beach creek fire has killed at least four people, and burned 187,000 acres. he said they didn't take a lot of important documents with them because they were so focused on getting their pets and livestock. >> we've seen the fire that close, we grabbed the animals, left all but the cat, we couldn't find and the cat we came back two or three days later and we found him, burnt paws and burnt belly but other than that, we got him and he didn't die. >> more than 2,500 square miles have burned in oregon and washington in recent days, more than the state of delaware.
