>> it started with a traffic stop. then an officer and a tow truck driver began feeling sick. now investigators are looking into whether they and other first responders were exposed to fentanyl. we are gathering information. >> reporter: we can tell you that seven people have been transported to the hospital. at last check, those folks are in stable condition. that is good news. this area directly behind me is an area that was closed off for much of the day. we are near the marin headlands north of the golden gate bridge. this was a hazmat area much of the day. they have opened this area back up. i want to go to video. here is what happened. the california highway patrol says they received a report of a driver swerving on the bridge. when they arrived, the car was stopped in one of the northbound

lanes. the driver was unshown koconsci. they drove the car to the first exit north of the bridge. that officer then got sick a short time later. he was transported to the hospital along with a tow truck driver and several other emergency responders. there was a white powder substance in the vehicle. that may have been fentanyl. >> extremely deadly. it takes a very, very, very small dose to kill an adult human. this is something that we have to take very seriously. we have to be very slow and methodic in our investigation as well as the decontamination of the scene. >> reporter: narcan was given to those transported to the hospital. the first officer taken to the hospital who drove the car out of the area is now responsive. back out here live again, just north of the golden gate bridge, you can see the officer in the

distance. they have cleared this area. just to wrap up, those folks at last check are in stable condition. >> thank you very much. to the smoke-filled sunday here in the bay area. just about wherever you look from the north bay to the south, the air is unhealthy. for those keeping track, this is the 27th consecutive spare the air day in the bay area. tomorrow will be 28. for a look and when -- we have been asking this for a few days now. when our air will improve, let's check in with our meteorologist. >> it's starting to improve right now. we went from very unhealthy unhealthy today. the smoke is north and east. yesterday, the smoke was blowing towards the bay area. we are keeping an eye on the low pressure that's starting to increase the sea breeze. we have a lot of smoke that blew

off to the coast. that's heading our way. check out the smoke forecast. tomorrow morning, from the pink to the green. check out tomorrow night. we will notice a difference. we move into the light blue. it gets better into tuesday. we are expecting moderate air quality from tuesday on to the rest of the week. >> we will see you in a few minutes. keep track of the air quality levels by using this tracker on our website. the link is at the top of the home page or on your free app. developing news now from southern california. a law enforcement official tells abc news, two los angeles county sheriff deputies wounded in an ambush last night are in stable condition. the other deputy is a 24-year-old man hit in the forehead, arm and hand.

he is alert. startling video captured the ambush. we are not showing where the shooter opens fire on the deputies sitting in the patrol car. >> he acted if he was going to walk past the car. then he made a left turn toward the car, raised a pistol and fired several rounds inside the vehicle, stroking both of the deputies. >> the sheriff's office is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the gunman's arrest. the attack on the two deputies sparked strong reaction from police departments across the bay area which are calling for violence against officers to stop. we have the story. >> we are sick to our stomachs, angry. >> reporter: that reaction from a police officer after seeing this disturbing surveillance video capturing the ambush-style attack on two sheriffs deputies.

>> it's a tough job. we take risks. doing our job is not being ambushed. that's not doing our job. they were sitting there. it's sickening. >> reporter: he sent a safety message to his officers sunday. >> watch each other's back. get home safe. >> reporter: police tweeted good wishes for the sheriffs department saying, we pray for the recovery of your deputies. >> my only reaction was to cry that this happened. >> reporter: they condemned the shooting. >> when our politicians start to vilify police officers, this is what happens. >> reporter: several demonstrators blocked the emergency room entrance where the deputies were treated. >> they were saying, death to the police, kill the police. they were using all type of curse words. >> it's really unfortunate that this happened. >> reporter: this woman isn't

surprised by the act of violence. >> people who do shootings like this, they don't represent the movement. but they are a reflection of the failures of policing to provide public safety for all of us. >> reporter: the governor tweeted, the perpetrator must quickly be brought to justice. a technical issue led to a delay to the start of bart service today. full service didn't get rolling until 12:30 this afternoon, past the normal 8:00 a.m. start time. other agencies provided free rides. a field network device failed just after 5:00 this morning and that device helps monitor the train network. >> a major inconvenience for tens of thousands of people. we apologize. we appreciate their patient and understanding. particularly at a time when we need every single ryder that id get. >> there's no evidence of a hack. bart says it has reconfigured the network. that should prevent a shutdown

of the system if a monitoring device fails again. a check on the wildfires. cal fire says it expects to have the scu complex fully contained by thursday. containment is at 98%. that's the fire that's burning in santa clara and contra costa counties. cal fire continues to gain ground on the czu complex. that fire is 87% contained. firefighters on the front lines of the north complex fire burning are racing against the clock to build containment lines. it claimed the lives of 12 people. it's the deadliest in the state this year. more than 300 structures are burned, more than a quarter million acres have burned as well. it's 26% contained. cal fire is worried about winds that are in the forecast. president trump will visit cal next week to get a wildfire

briefing. he will meet with fire officials in sacramento, where the fire crews are based. the governor and president trump have spoken since mid august by phone. in nevada, the president spoke of the danger fire crews are facing. >> 28,000 firefighters and first responders who cra and bravely are fighting out there. they are fighting. it's dangerous. it's dangerous. it's a rapidly spreading hundreds of thousands of acres. it's not anything quite like this one. >> president trump paid a visit to california after the 2018 wildfire season. the economy is an important topic to help build a better bay area. tomorrow will be a big day for businesses in san francisco. many can reopen indoors. that includes hair salons and barber shops. other personal services on the list are nail salons, massage studios and tattoo studios. gyms and fitness centers can have people inside.

here is what it looks like outside in san jose. temperatures have been on the mild side. san francisco, 60. oakland, 67. half moon bay cooler at 59 degrees. check out this live shot. you see the smog and haze, but i want you to notice the trees blowing. that's a sign that we will get the sea breeze that's going to pick up and push the smoke and fog and haze out of the area. right now in santa rosa, 73. napa, 71. 80s in fairfield and in concord. look at the winds. we are starting to get the return of the sea breeze. that's going to push the smoke out of the bay area. sfo, 20 miles per hour. this is going to continue over the next few days. i want to show you the smoke forecast. we have had unhealthy air, especially last week.

tonight, we still have quite a bit of smoke. notice more is in the red and orange. we are still in that category. overnight tomorrow, we will drop down. we will see less smoke. there's still smoke, and that's why we are expecting unhealthy air tomorrow. throughout the day into sunday and into tuesday, we see less smoke dropping into the blue. out here is the clear air as well. midweek looks like a great time to head outdoors. overnight lows will be in the 50s with fog once again spreading in from the coast, into the bay. san francisco, 54. still hazy overnight. tomorrow you will start to notice an improvement throughout the day. highs will be near normal. we will see 60s at the coast and beaches. 70s around the bay. san francisco, 67. oakland, 70. mid inland areas. here is the seven day forecast. we have improving air quality
