5:01 am
promises of cleaner air. we're surrounded by smoke on all four sides. and it is hard even when the wind shifts to get cleaner air in here. so here is a look at the visibility, 2 to 3 miles this morning. and this is the way it looks at san jose and you see it lingering in the air. and the winds are a little faster, at least around 7 to 8 miles per hour, but fairfield at 22, that is the increase in the seabreeze that will bring places that are close to the golden gate bridge and delta some relief this afternoon while the rest of us will have to wait until tomorrow. 60s, 70s and 80s for highs the rest of the accuweather seven be day forecast coming up. and as mike described, there really is no escaping the bad air. and that leaves all of us with a decision, do we venture out and risk it or just stay inside? and julian glover is live with that story this morning.
5:02 am

5:03 am
>> reporter: now, it is important as you heard the doctor mention, the pulmonologist, that if you do have to go out ford of time, you he the proper mask, an n95 mask that will help filter out some of the part kells. and if you do go out, try to limit the time you actually are out there. julian glover, abc 7 news. we have made it easy for you to keep track of the air quality levels where you there. there is a tracker at abc7news.com, the link is right at the top of our home page and on our free abc 7 news app. cal fire is monitoring 29 major burni across the state. firefighters on the front lines of the north complex fire are racing against the clock to build containment lines. and more than a quarter million acres burned, it is only 26% contained. cal fire is worried about gusty

hospitalized may have inhaled the drug saying they received a report of a driver swerving on the bridge. when they arrived, this car was actually stopped along northbound lane on the golden gate. the driver was inside and unconscious. officers made the decision to clear the lanes and moving the vehicle to the first exit north of the bridge. >> as soon as they got on to the off-ramp and he immediately began to feel the symptoms, he immediately went over the air and requested an ambulance for position. shortly after that is when he went down. >> reporter: and niche one golden gate bridge patrol officer, the tow truck driver and the initial driver were all taken to the hospital for exposure. doctors say fentanyl is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine and if this was fentanyl, it could have been deadly. >> sadly there are more opoid overdose deaths called by fentanyl today than by any other opoid. >> reporter: narcan was used to
5:07 am
treat at least one of those. at last check, everyone except the initial driver has been released. you can see the area where the car in question was, it has been cleared, that car towed along with several other, all of which thousand have to be decontaminated. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. and we sent this push alert when we first learned of the incident. if you want breaking news alerts like this in the future, our app is degrfree to download. and there is a reopening plan in san francisco. today will be a big day for businesses here. many can reopen indoors, they include hair salons, nail salo, massage tattoo parlors. gyms can also have people back be inside. all those businesses have to follow capacity limits and other health regulations.

5:09 am
dangerous air again today, poor on the roads because of the visibility. and then you have to deal with both of them if you are taking the ferry ride. here is why things will change a little bit this afternoon especially the areas you see in yell yellow, that is the seabreeze kicking up. the problem is, there is so much smoke offshore right now that it won't be tapping into a completely clean air mass. so we won't completely clean up. here is a look at your smoke forecast and you can see while the heaviest moves away, there is still a little bit lingering as we head into the evening hours and overnight when the winds calm down a little bit, we'll have smoggy conditions, just a touch of it tomorrow morning. and you can see by tomorrow evening and into wednesday, we're starting to get a push of some cleaner air as an area of low pressure moves closer to us, that promises a slight chance of some drizzle coming up in the accuweather 7 day forecast and i'll show you that in a bit. first let's get our first check of the morning commute.

far as your day planner, plan on wearinging th wearing that n95 mask to protect you from that fine particulate matter. mid to upper 50s at 7:00. 60s at the coast, 66 to 70 around the bay from noon to 4:00. so still not too hot. and 50s, 60s and 70s at 7:00. and do have a chance of some cleaner air on the way and then a possible offshore event this weekend, that is all coming up in the accuweather 7 day forecast. >> i like the sound of that. thanks. and abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area. and issues of race and social justice are a big part of that. every day this week, we'll bring you stories focused on topics impacting minority communities. and we'll start with the talk, something black parents find as uncomfortable as it is vital. it is both a warning for our children and a set of instructions about interacting with police. but on a deeper level, the talk is a heart-wrenching
5:15 am
acknowledgement that parents cannot always protect their children. here is eric thomas. >> it does break my heart. >> reporter: and as a human being, what happened to george floyd at the hands of police rocks you to your core. but as a black parent what keeps you up at night is the thought that could have been my dad, my brother or even one of my kids. >> i have had the official talk, if you will, in segments with my oldest child. >> reporter: autumn is a senior fellow with the think tank new america, she and her husband, a physician, have three kids, the edde e eldest in eight. she wrote a piece about the tal. >>ou didn't think 8 was kind of young for it. ahink young, but not too early. >> reporter: it is about alerting children with interactions with police where body language, tone of voice, word choice and other factors in certain circumstances can lead to arrests or worse.
5:16 am
autumn says she felt konl speco to after he saw a snippet about george floyd on tv. >> he said something to the effect of, you know, is that happening now? because he thought that it was referencing something from the past. and i said yeah, that is now. and he was also unclear as to why it was a police officer who was -- because when he was in kindergarten, he had been taught that police officers are community helpers. >> reporter: once she got the sociology out of the way, it was time for concrete advice. >> it is not about if you are right or wrong, it doesn't matter, you can't argue, you have to listen and say yes, sir and be submissive basically. >> reporter: it is a tough lesson to teach your off springd rights, but it is probably safer not to argue about them during an encounter with police. now, this story is not meant to make all police officers out to be villains intent on hurting
5:17 am
people of color. but they are your kids and you won't take any chances, period. >> when the thing that strikes fear into a potential police officer or anyone is your blackness, how do you lay down your weapon when your weapon is your identity. >> reporter: it is not a new conversation. my folks had it with me in the '70s and you could probably trace it back generations if the not centuries. the difference now is video. nearly everyone on the street has a cellphone and can produce images to compare against the official narrative of police use of force we baby boomers could imagine what that fatal encounter must have looked like. now we and our kids can see it and worry about it. eric are thomthomas, abc 7 news. and abc 7 is going to have more stories like this all week focused on race and social justice as we work to build a
