5 mile on the coast as well as novato and green indicates good air quality. upper levels wind out of the north are expected to transport some smoke in to the north bay to our inland east bay for poor air quality. as we look at the rest of the day 60s skies will get slightly hazier as we move into your afternoon especially to our north bay, into the east bay. our warmest inland valleys, we'll talk about it and talk about when the air clears in just a few liz? we continue now with the death of supreme court justice ruth bader ginsberg. ginsberg was 87 and had been battling pan crealtic cancer. she leaves behind two children and several grandchildren. she was preceded in death by her beloved husband marty.

sources close to president trump say he will name a replacement for ginsberg in the coming days with senate republicans promising confirmation. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell saying president trump's nominee will receive a vote. eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> going to be an interesting next 6 weeks. and several hashtags about ginsberg were trending on twitter as tributes poured in last night. president obama wrote in part justice ruth bader ginsberg fought to the end through her cancer with unwavering faith in our democracy and its ideals. governor gavin newsom wrote in part our hearts ache tonight, let us honor her memory by preserving the very ideal she fought so tirelessly for. london breed echoed this sentiment. and bay area congresswoman jackie spear says rbg was an american icon of untold proportions. she said the country was lucky to have her serving on the court

right now is a time for change. >> reporter: in years past polling locations have typically been staffed by older volunteers. a pew research data analysis found that during the 2018 general election 58% of u.s. poll workers were 61 and older. 27% were over 70. of course this reflects a high risk population during the pandemic. >> i think that makes it really necessary for people who are younger and healthy to sign-up and volunteer their time nod to kind of take that burden off of older folks who are more vulnerable. >> reporter: the registrar voters office will open 100 voting centers on october 31st. for now it's challenged with recruiting and training up to 2,000 poll workers. >> those who are not able to work with us, they've called us and told us i'd love to help you, i've helped you so many years, so many decades but i'm at an age i can't

pandemic is limiting indoor gatherings, so many services are online. the day of atonement sunday, and it is the holiest of all jewish holidays. and lisa, and just want to read a tweet i just saw that is sort of comforting i think for some people. jewish teachings says that those who died just before the jewish near year are the ones god has held back until the last moment because they are needed the most and are the most righteous. so the timing of ruth bader ginsberg's death is certainly very symbolic in many ways. she was the first jewish woman r quality is entireayting chang as some smoke in the upper levels of the atmosphere beginning to be pulled down from a north wind. not everyone's going to see it. as we look at live doppler 7

right now, can you make out the fog there from the peninsula up to the north b. the sun coming up at 6:55. those nights certainly getting longer. 55 in mountain view. 61 in san jose and half moon bay with gilroy at 56 degrees. looking at walnut creek with the clouds here. 53 in santa rosa, but clear sky. you can see just a little bit of cloud cover there. as we look at the winds in the upper levels of atmosphere most of the direction is from the north-northeast, and that's going to bring down some of that smoke for some of you in the north and east bay later on today. but for everyone look at the temperature change. 2 to 8 degrees cooler this morning compared to yesterday, and we'll look for that trend to reverse as we get into a warmer sunday. santa cruz right now, clear sky. numbers in the 70s today. it was in the 80s yesterday so kind of warm. but the warmer weather will be

with us for the second half of the weekend. some smoke in the skies today for a spare the air alert. so far just that spare the air alert for your saturday, and then autumn beginning on tuesday, 6:31 in the morning. notice all the greens around the bay area. that's the way it's been. it's been really nice out there. hope you've enjoyed it. but as we look at the upper level winds there's that system moving into the pacific northwest bringing a little bit of rain there, and we can see the direction here pretty much out of the north. that's our wind that stream lines here bringing down the upper level direction that the atmosphere will be trending, and as we look at this forecast it looks a little more ominous than i think we're going to get. the pinks indicating that smoke pulling down into the north bay. this is 9:00 tonight and then into your sunday looks like it gets a little more extreme whereby but then it pushes out of here by your monday. so we will be watching it for you, and over the next four days

todayhe airquallity for our north bay, the land eaiastuality for sunda and tuesday. a look at livermore for the week ahead today, 85, and tomorrw your warmup into the low 90s. and the est are of the week looks pretty comfortable. and elsewhere around the bay you'll be enjoying those upper 80s out towards antioch with some hazy conditions. mid-80s here in santa rosa. 75 you in oakland. on the peninsula 77, looking about 80 san jose. morgan hill, 83. the accuweather seven day forecast looking at that deteriorating air quality for some hazy conditions for your sunday. still some smoke but warmer. we're coming up anywhere from about 4 degrees or so around the bay. by monday we're going to push that poor air quality out of the bay area, keep the trend for bluer skies especially as we start autumn on tuesday. and then as we get into the rest of the week looks pretty nice.

speaker nancy pelosi, the first woman to lead the house calling her death devastating. former president bill clinton who nominated ginsberg to the court in 1993 tweeted that she extraordinary justices ever. former president barack obama in a statement saying ginsberg, quote, believed that equal justice under law only had meaning if it applied to every single american. adding when republicans refused to hold a hearing or an up or down vote on garland they invented a principle the senate shouldn't fill an open seat on the supreme court before a new president was sworn in and then called for consistency. karina mitchell, abc news, new york. >> and one of the late justice's antonin scalia's children tweet tonight i'm very sad to hear about the passing of my father's good friend and wonderful colleague justice ginsberg. may her memory be a blessing. >> despite scalia being a

conservative the two justices shared a long friendship, even traveling together. scalia once said that despite their differences there were lots more they agreed on, and one of those things was opera. the two often went to performances together. and after he died in 2016 ginsberg said she lost, quote, one of her best buddies. and earlier yesterday democratic vice presidential nominee kamala harris talked about her vision for the supreme court if she and joe biden are elected. she was participating in an instagram live with singer lizzo. it seems they were unaware at the time of ginsberg's passing. >> joe biden and i have have a commitment that we will name to the united states supreme court a black woman. we've never had a black woman on the united states supreme court. those folks who interpret the constitution of the united states and make decisions like brown vs. board of education, whether we want to desegregate the schools of america.

happening today trump supporters of the president will be in pleasanton going to hold a truck rally. start at 11:15 this morning at the stone ridge parking lot near the jc penny. organizers say they do expect anywhere from 50 to 300 trucks to participate. and the cdc now says anyone who's come in close contact with someone with covid-19 should get tested, and that now includes people who are asymptomatic. later reports stated guidance was pushed by white house and dhhs officials over the objections of cdc experts. the cdc removed that language from their guidance yesterday. of course, we learned you can test positive for coronavirus even if you are asymptomatic. a coronavirus testing site focused on testing black oakland

residents will open up today. the pop up community covid-19 testing site will open at the center of hope church parking lot off of mcarthur boulevard. it'll open from 9:00 this morning to 4:00 p.m. personal protective equipment will also be distributed at the event. ucsf, united in health, oakland front line healers and black organizations all partnered together to open this site. and also today you can get a free flu shot in santa clara county. county leaders just unveiled this froom. it's available at the fairgrounds every saturday through mid-december. medical experts suggest getting your flu shot as soon as possible. the bay area and country are preparing for the threat of the flu season and a resurgence of the tu st program at the santa clara county fairgrounds runs from 9:00 to 4:00 starting tomorrow, and you do not need an appointment. santa clara county has announced schools can reopen for in-person classes as early as next wednesday if they meet certain conditions.

schools can open if their plans to do so are approved by county and state officials. those plans must include guidelines for social distancing and other steps to prevent the spread of covid-19. they're also encouraged to keep students in small groups or social bubbles. schools may opt to continue distance learning as well. and in san francisco, meanwhile, restaurants could move from outdoor to some indoor dining by october 1st. that's when the city expects to advance into the next covid-19 recovery tier, orange. abc 7 news reporter chris raes says a lot of people have their fingers crossed. >> reporter: this is a scene in many restaurant kitchens still running in san francisco, small staff, hard at work, empty dining rooms. >> we lost 90% of business, and this restaurant was doing 7 plus million dollars. >> reporter: here's a sign of the times today three people max. it used to be 257. some good news for those numbers. once indoor dining reopens

restaurants can start bringing diners back in at 25% capacity. >> there's been so much negativity and the mental stress and strain i can't tell you. i feel it personally and so many people i've talked to feel it. >> reporter: for the company of eight san francisco restaurants this two wheel delivery system has been their lifeline. the take outs are keeping this kitchen busy and their staff employed, but they're desperate for the city to go the color of their bike, orange. >> i think we're ready, and i think at this point we just need to kind of know what the timetable looks like. >> reporter: at perbacco they've already ordered plexiglass. >> i will be crushed because then you start all over again, and what's next? >> we're all big boys and girls, and we all know there's a chance that god forbid, things could get worse. what does that mean? that means we all need to be

prepared that we might have to go backwards. >> reporter: in order to revive the industry restaurant owners say they really need to get to 50% capacity. to help get to that number the golden gate restaurant association is putting together a document to set firm guidelines for safe indoor dining. they hope to release that in the next couple weeks. >> and a number of san francisco restaurants have closed permanently during the pandemic. you can see a list of just four of them here. we're talking dosa and beach street grill, fisherman's warf and all of them have shutdown. the golden gate restaurant association doesn't have a tally of establishments that have closed for good but reports about 50% have closed their doors for an extended period since the shelter in place orders in march. all right, still ahead on abc 7 mornings the tiktok clock is counting down. the tight time frame to either download or upgrade the app.

you're looking at a pretty sunrise in parts of the bay. here's a look at the fog here of the low cloud deck in the peninsula, and as we look live here you can see that marine layer is pretty compressed here. and air quality will be going down a bit in our inland east bay. it is 65 in oakland. good morning to you, mountain view, 56. 61 in san jose as well as half moon bay. so for some of you it's a mild start. this is san rafael. can you make out the clouds there? we do have some cloudy skies, and looking at most of that as low clouds, and higher clouds today bringing in that haze. 53, santa rosa, 55 in novato, napa, starting out in the 5 you. from about 1,000 feet the winds are already switching direction. mt. diablo gusts to 21 and also out of the northeast for mt. tam. that's why we think that smoke mainly from the august complex

will be pushing down into the north bay and a little bit into our inland east bay for that poor air quality throughout the afternoon. did you notice the cooler air? we're anywhere from a degree to about 8 degrees cooler up in napa, so feeling like fall. the longer nights, the shorter days. but this is usually our best time of year, right? we're looking at a pretty good week ahead after we get through some of of the hazy conditions this weekend. at the surface we have that west wind to look forward to, but smieod lt the air ather and quality advisory board initiating that spare the air alert today. autumn beginning on tuesday, 6:31 in the morning. current check of the indices here are very good. look at livermore. we're looking at good air quality throughout the morning hours. but as we take another look at the upper levels of the atmosphere you notice the clouds here, the precip up towards the pacific northwest.
