we are seeing across the nation an increase in a number of states. we're seeing a second wave starting in europe. despite the steady downward trajectory, we cannot drop our guard. >> a warning to stay vigilant as the u.s. hits 200,000 deaths from the coronavirus. but there is some good news right here in the bay area. good afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> johns hopkins university puts the u.s. at it is predicted 378,000 deaths by the end of the year. dr. anthony fauci called the death toll very sobering. early on he had predicted a lower death toll but says that was based on people adhering to face mask and social distancing rules. >> we do have within our capability even before a

people, unemployment in my district is extraordinarily high. so this is going to bring a lot of relief to a lot of people. >> schools will be able to reopen within two weeks. i think that's really important to parent. and it is important to kids. >> all businesses can immediately reopen. >> reporter: solano county can further reopen but the health officer explains that businesses must still operate within sector guidelines. >> the big changes are increased capacity in retail and the resumption of indoor for most other sectors that have been number o people allowed to go in to 50% of capacity from 25.2. >> san francisco, let's talk about them will their numbers have been improving. but california's department of republican health says the city and county will remain in the red instead of moving to the orange tier.
4:04 pm
and according to the city's covid command central, a data discrepancy was identified between august 30th and september 5th. that impacts whether that time period was red or orange. so the state is working to resolve that discrepancy. until then, san francisco will have to wait in the red. >> nail salons are being allowed to reopen. they have realized businesses can operate safely and have given them the green light. but there's one catch. this doesn't mean all of them can reopen right away. county health department the final say. in the bay area, san mateo, san francisco, solano, contra costa county and others are allowing nail salons to reopen. >> san mateo county businesses say they're happy about being in a new tier buthet the idea of i business with a capacity little of 25%. the restaurants we spoke with say bringing business indoorsda

a plan who o'who would receive the doses of the vaccine. panel members instead want to learn more about the vaccines before they're administered to the public.expe t clde get a va by other essentials workers like those working in food and agriculture along with nursing home staff. >> a lot of information out today about covid-19 to help break some of it down. thank you for spending time with us. we just hit 200,000 deaths. what are your concerns as we head into fall and winter that maybe we'll see an uptick in covid-19 cases along with the possibility of no? >> well, i have to say that 200,000 number is sickening, heart breaking, sobering, >> i thin back to where we were in march. we had not yet hit 50,000 deaths
4:07 pm
and all of these seemed like doomsday conspiracies. we won't hit 100,000. we won't hit 200,000. we'll do better. and this is sad with 200,000 deaths. as i look toward winter, i and many other people in health care and public health officials are worried about second, or possibly third spikes. and that's happened with other pandemics in the past. if we see spike that is could n not, concurrent with cold and flu, we could see a huge issue with hospital capacity and resources. so i am also optimistic with everyone else in the bay area about the positive trajectory. i'm trying to be a little realistic here. >> what is your reaction when you their university of washington say 378,000 deaths by the end of the year. that was their projection, he with reported earlier in the newscast.
4:08 pm
that's frightening. >> that's more than every death since world war ii. korea, afghanistan, vietnam combined. this year alone, covid-19 will be the third leading cause of death in the united states after heart disease and cancer. if we don't actually take a second to realize, this could get a lot worse, it could come true. those are the projections in spring that we're saying, hey, even with mitigation factors, we could see six figures. in one big unknown hanging over all of us, we don't know what will happen in winter. think about the fact a lot of people will be indoors. not only more tempered weather but if you look at other parts of the country, people can't necessarily go visit or have a barbecue or eat dinner on the sidewalk. so things will change. we have to be prepared. >> would you recommend getting a in shot right now?
4:09 pm
>> absolutely. absolutely. i would recommend everyone get a flu shot as soon as you can. not only kit prevent from you catching the flu but if you do still get the flu after the shot, kit prevent you from getting severe illness. the last thing you want is both sars v 2 and influenza. we don't know what can happen if you get both but nothing good can come of that. >> finally, the cdc changed their guidance on whether covid-19 can spread in the air. they're now saying person to person contact is more likely. what is your opinion as a medical professional with these guidelines that seem to change frequently, and just as the layman here, it makes it really hard to know what to believe day to day. >> it's so frustrating. we constantly tell people. follow this public health quebec. they keep changing. all it is doing is giving the public more mistrust.
4:10 pm
medical journalists are the ones trying on give the public guidance and a little commentary. this is why i wish we had briefings every day to update the public and add more transparency to what's going on. when we don't explain why the changes are happening, why certain guidelines are changing or time lines are being rushed, people assume. we have to go back to data, to evidence and clear communication. >> well, you're the only guy i listen to. it's all on you. >> text me any time. i' i'm here for you. >> all right. thank you. we appreciate your spending time with us this afternoon. >> thank you.
