this fire on a sonoma county hillside moved quickly before crews got it under control. but now there is increasing concern over the potential for more of the same. good evening and thank you for joining us tonight. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm larry beil. that fire was at yours lane road in santa rosa. the heat wave is expected to bring severe fire conditions. all that has firefighters in the north bay closely watching the weather. more from abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard. >> cal fire aircraft pounced on this fast-moving grass fire thursday afternoon off ursiline road in santa rosa, the same spot where the tubbs fire burned homes in 2014. >> poor people, all these new

houses that they built over here, sad. we've got a great team out here though. cal fire. >> reporter: it burned close to rosalind college prep school. it was too much for superintendent amy jones kerr. >> we're in full distance learning, my staff is back here. to have this happening right now, it's heartbreaking. trying to hold it together right now. >> reporter: luckily fire crews stopped this fire at 12 acres. no homes or buildings were lost. a new round of dangerous fire conditions. >> the concern for us is things continue to remain dry. conditions are not getting better right now. we have concerned with the conditions this weekend, primarily being the heat and winds. >> reporter: fire crews are ready but the timing is bad. weeks after the mass saf wall bridge fire forced thousands from their homes in sonoma county. lawyer are crutchfield says it's been a stressful summer. >> i think it's our new reality.

it's up to us to figure out how to be as prepared as possible. >> reporter: pg&e is watching the weather and has issued a possible power shut off weekend. it does not affect the bay area. >> we're looking at the sierra nef have had da foothills. >> continuing our team coverage of the heat, sandhya patel is here with a look at when temperatures whether peak where you live. >> we're talking about temperatures peaking sunday and monday. right now i want to show you the fire weather watch begins saturday morning, runs until monday morning. the winds are going to come out of the north-northeast in the hills gusting 35 to 50 miles an hour and that humidity is going to lower which is why it's a concern. take a look at what's going to happen. that offshore wind is a down

sloping wind. it comes off the hills. as it moves down towards the ocean, the winds speed up and that's where the fire danger comes in. we're looking at temperatures in the 60s saturday morning. look how quickly those temperatures soar especially as we get into the afternoon, already in the low 90s. that's the start of several days of hot weather. the heat only intensifies sunday and monday. i'll be back with the forecast. >> happening right now, protesters have organized a go slow caravan over three bay area bridges including the golden gate, bay bridge and dumbarton bridge. sky 7 is over the golden gate bridge right now and we'll show you a live look as that white van is part of the protest group. there's a police motorcycle behind it. it doesn't appear that traffic is impacted that much. police have closed off the south visitors parking lot at vista point northbound. they're showing their outrage, the protesters are, over the

contra costa grand jury's decision not to charge any of the police officers in breonna taylor's death. taylor was a medical worker shot and killed by louisville police officers back in march during a botched raid on her apartment. minority business owners are finally speaking out after a string of crimes including a brazen arson. dion lim has the story. >> it's like trying to burn down willy wonka's chocolate factory. why? this is a man inside dragon printing saturday night. he holds up a lighter to paper boxes. >> they went after the heart of the business and said we don't want you anymore. >> reporter: all that's left of this 34-year-old family run store is ash and a mission for albert wong, a longtime business owner in the neighborhood himself and president of the merchant's association. to bring to light this crime and three break-ins that happened

one day later to three other businesses all owned by people of color. i wanted to tell the story of dragon printing and three other businesses weeks ago but had a hard time getting someone to speak out about what happened, that is, until a most recent incident here that prompted the owner to want to share his story. >> the crime has to stop. >> reporter: the owner of foam tea house -- a vehicle driving past his shop days ago and suddenly the front window was shattered. he's now urging his fellow asian-american business owners to speak out, too. >> i'm sure there's a lot of people try to help in the neighborhood. but no one standing up is not going to help the community at all. >> reporter: after meeting the community leaders and sfpd, albert is recommending to the 400 businesses in his district, take precautions, such as making sure insurance policies cover these crimes and understanding that having cameras isn't

enough. >> clean your lenses and they're pointing in the right direction. >> reporter: as dragon printing tries to find a way to rebuild and replace hundreds of thousands in damaged equipment, one last plea on behalf of all small business owners. >> if you're silent, no one is going to help you. if it's an attack on one of us, it's an attack on all of us. >> in fran, dion lim, abc 7 news. >> a gofundme account has been set up and you'll find links to them at abc7news.com. today berkeley's health officer says reopening elementary schools will be prioritized over other activities. if metrics remain stable tlup october 6th, the county could decide to reopen schools. berkeley says every school regardless of grade should continue to prepare for eventual reopening. san francisco extending the commercial eviction moratorium after governor newsom signed an executive order allowing local

governments to do so. stores, gums, barber shops, restaurants were forced to close for months. mayor london breed says losing the protections would have been devastating for businesses. united airlines just launched a $250 near instant test for travelers. some health advocates are saying this is another example of the inequities revealed by the pandemic. abc 7's chris reyes has the warning. >> reporter: in the fruitvale district organizing testing in the community has been a struggle. >> not having access to rapid response and having to wait two days, three days, and at some points early on, we were waiting seven days. >> reporter: that's why jane garcia wasn't thrilled about the news that united aur lierns would give their passengers a chance to get rapid results for $250 so they can go on vacation.

>> it has a way of getting under one's skin. it's important to understand that this is a real true look at what disparities look like. >> reporter: the american public health association, an advocacy group based in washington, d.c. has been sounding the alarm on the inequities revealed by the pandemic. dr. benjamin says he applause the airlines. his concern -- >> i wish we could do that nationwide. i know the administration has tried to scale up some of these tests, but we still have far too many people not able to get the test. >> in july california was reporting testing backlogs, today we went to two drive-through locations with no lines. the current turn-around time for test is down to 1.2 days. color, one of the partners providing testing kits say they're not competing for public

i'm to help california's 19 most vulnerable. over 24,000 homes were destroyed by wildfires in less than two years. too many of those victims are also hit with a sudden tax hike after their forced to move. it's wrong. prop 19 limits taxes on wildfire victims and limits taxes on seniors and severely disabled homeowners. join firefighters and emergency responders in voting 'yes' on 19.

the hours they work and who pays for their benefits. more from abc 7's eric thomas. >> by a 4-1 margin drivers want to stay independent contractors. >> reporter: you've probably seen this ad a lot and you'll see a lot more of it before voting day. it's an appeal by the big ride share companies to get around state law and a california supreme court decision requiring them to give drivers the benefits and protections of full employees. uber and lyft argue their workers are independent contractors who want to stay that way. >> we have 100,000 drivers in our coalition already supporting the ballot measure. >> reporter: the measures only applies to ride share and app-based delivery drivers, not other workers in the gig economy. the apps say most of their drivers work limited hours to earn extra cash and they're offered benefits that match their part thyme status.

>> they're still in control of their schedule. it provides a minimum income, opportunity to earn money towards health care and occupational accident insurance which is very similar to workers' comp. >> the main backers of prop 22, uber, lyft and doordash are spending a lot of money to get you to vote yes, more than $180 million. >> gigantic corporations like this are happy to invest $191 million in scaring people and exploiting their workers. >> reporter: alba has driven for lift for four years and is part of a group called gig workers rising which is trying to get people to vote no on 22 and organize a saying accuse the companies of bullying workers and the public by threatening to shut down in california if prop 22 fails. >> they make a lot of threats. they try to scare the drievs. they try to scare the public.

they've done it before in different markets. they're doing it now with california. >> the latest polls show the no on 22 campaign currently leading by a slim 39 to 36% margin. in san jose, eric thomas, abc 7 news. we have a complete guide to all the 2020 ballot measures on our website. there are 12 on the california ballot. you can check out everything you need to know before voting at abc7news.com. a controversial plan to force large bay area companies to keep its employees working from home is moving forward. it's not being fueled by the coronavirus or anything like that, but rather climate change. the metropolitan transportation commission approved a mandate that would have employers keep 60% of their workers home by 2050. they say that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 19%. critics say others would suffer heavily. the plan would be for companies with more than 25 employees.

businesses like grocery stores would be exempt. the national trust for historic preservation put an ancient indian site in berkeley on the list of america's most endangered historic places. it's a village that dates back 5700 years. located on fourth street: they would like the site to be repurposed and landscaped for ceremonial purposes. >> throughout the years our tribe has continued to pray at this place just as our ancestors did. this land is an important cultural landscape and this recognition gives us a platform to tell our story. >> the spanninger family owns the site and is seeking permits to build a retail and residential project. it's not just the hot weather that's coming. also high surf. abc 7 meteorologist sandhya patel will be here with that next. let's take a look and take a look at the protest.

feet out of dickson. who chp officers are being praised after saving a child who stopped breathing. the officers were stopped at a fruit stand when a car came to a screeching halt. >> a frantic mother ran to the officers carrying her 7-year-old son who was turning blue. he had no pulse. the officers immediately started cpr until an ambulance could arrive. they were able to get the boy breathing on his own again. he was taken to keiser vacaville before, as you can see, he's doing much better. thankfully. great job by the officers. please, vote 'yes' on 19. the unfair money bail system. he, accused of rape. while he, accused of stealing $5. the stanford rapist could afford bail; got out the same day. the senior citizen could not; forced to wait in jail nearly a year. voting yes on prop 25 ends this failed system, replacing it with one based on public safety. because the size of your wallet shouldn't determine whether or not you're in jail.
