a fall heat wave, fire danger and smoke all making a dangerous combination this weekend. it's raising the risk across the bay area as crews gear up to respond to potential fires. good morning, again, everybody. it's saturday, september 26th. i'm liz kreutz. thank you for joining us. let's get right to meteorologist lisa argen with a look at this weekend's forecast. >> good morning to you. we're going to see that persistent offshore flow beginning today and lasting through monday morning 11:00. here's live doppler 7. the fog is off the coast. it's not going to offer us any relief. the winds have already switched in our nohe component. 60 in hayward, 55 in fremont. so red flag warning tonight into 11:00 monday. this includes not only the hills of the north and east bay but interior valleys of the north bay and east bay. low relative humidity, gusts to near 50 miles an hour. ere wil up theusts.a could seelt

25 miles an hour. 24 up at mt. diablo. current air quality is pretty good. out towards the delta, though, it is moderate. we'll see the haze come into play out towards our east bay valleys as temperatures there come up an easy 10 degrees from yesterday's reading. allowing for a good air quality today. throughout the day today look for that warmup to be kind of rapid with 80 noontime, low 80s around the bay, staying comfortable today only though at the coast. tomorrow even the coast heats up. a further look at that coming t. pg says nearly 100,000 customersed could be impacted by a public safety power shutoff this weekend. but in the bay area only about 180 customers in napa county so far could lose power. the shutoff is expected to start tomorrow morning in an effort to prevent wildfires.

a red flag warning goes into effect tomorrow. abc 7 reporter luz penna reports that has firefighters in the east bay on high alert. >> reporter: signs like this one are hopefully not prophetic. it's been close to 29 years. >> in the oakland hills fire we were here that weekend with our family when that started and we were right here. >> reporter: so when she hears about a red flag warning this weekend flashbacks of her neighborhood in flames resurface. >> it's just a memory that doesn't go away. >> reporter: east bay firefighters know weather conditions are not in their favor this weekend, but the similarities to 1991 are there. >> you can see highway 24 and 13 here. same areas that we are concerned about to this day. >> reporter: fast forward to 2020 this map shows the current problematic areas. >> so really you have 24 in our hill area like we think about starts from engine 7.

>> reporter: many coming out of battling the lightening complex and now staffing theirstitions to respond to any potential fires. >> on the east side of fremont we have a lot of hills. there's a lot of residents back in there. >> reporter: and they ask the public to do their part. >> it's not a good time to go out and do lawn mowing or weed whacking or anything that could cause a spark. >> reporter: in oakland luz pena, abc 7 news. >> and you can stay one step ahead of this weekend's dangerous heat and winds with the abc 7 news app. you can keep track of conditions, wgh breonna taylor. last night more than 250 marchers headed towards oakland city hall. police say multiple people were arrested for assault on officers tweeting some in the crowd threw bottles at officers. in one video you can see someone it's unclear who throw what

appears to be a smoke grenade. the department tweeted video of people turning over orange barricades as well. at one point the 12 street city b.a.r.t. station was closed due to what they're saying, quote, was civil unrest. the protests began wednesday night after a grand jury in kentucky decided not to indict any police officers for the shooting death of breonna taylor. protests have been happening now across the country. that was on the peninsula. a rally was headed there and held in menlo park. a crowd ended at the menlo park police station. several community groups did take to remain peaceful. police stopped counterprotesters from reaching a larger group. there's no word of any unrest following a brief clash that happened there. about 50 other people held flags

and waved flags to express their support for police in courthouse square. organizers say they opposed recent calls to defund and disband police agencies across america. >> we like our police the way it is. we don't think it's worth re-imagining it right now when we're having so many issues in this country. >> the rally's organizers urge people not to bring signs critical of black lives matter, but at least one person brought this sign reading black lives murder. if you are dealing with racial or social justice issues we want to help you find an ally. you can go to abc7news.com/take action for a list of local resources.okay the city of san francisco and archdioceses are clashing again after the justice department says the city may be in violation of the first amendment because of its covid-19 restrictions on religious services.

but not all houses of worship are opposed to san francisco's health orders. here's abc 7 news reporter kate larson. >> reporter: on friday the u.s. department of justice sent this letter to mayor breed that says san francisco's pandemic restricts on indoor worship may violate the first amendment. >> i look at the rule of only one person at a time inside a church to pray. it's very clear we're being discriminated against. >> reporter: archbishop of san francisco points out that sack ruments like comunian cannot be done virtually although some masses have been taking place online. >> people don't have the constitutional right to get a haircut but we do have a right to exercise our religion. >> reporter: st. dominics have been holding services in their parking lot. meanwhile here at st. israel they've been doing all services virtually, and say they're actually doing well. do you feel like your religious

freedoms have been infringed upon? >> no. judaism values life and the preservation of life above all else. >> reporter: the city attorney responded to the doj's letter saying in part there is a reason that san francisco has the lowest covid-19 death rate of any major city in the country. maybe the federal government should focus on an actual pandemic response instead of lobbying careless legal threats. religious gatheri indrs and outdoors are already set to expand in a few days. kate larson, abc 7 news. >> and coronavirus cases remain steady in california right now, but the state's top health expert is warning about some troubling signs ahead of the warm weekend. >> we have the tools to reduce transmission, and by doing these simple things we can hopefully bring these early trends of increase back down and help us get back to where we were just, you know, a week or two ago.

>> dr. galley also warned we could see an 80% rise in covid related hospitalizations. balboa cafe posted an update on instagram yesterday. they said they're going to be closed all next week to clean the space. albowa cafe says they've always followed all cdc and health guidelines when operating and that they hope to reopen by next friday, october 2nd. latinos, they make up half of all reported cases of covid-19 in san francisco. the mayor says it's time to do more. oakland with similar issues is stepping up testing there. lianne melendez takes a look at what can be done to support this community. >> reporter: in oakland the virus continues to affect latinos disproportionately with a rate six times higher than that of white families. through the weekend testing will

take place in the district. mayor libby shaft delivered this message in english and spanish. >> it is important that everyone knows that getting a free test here is safe and confidential, and it will not impact your immigration status. >> reporter: san francisco is now expanding covid related support for this community in different ways. >> but we want them to know, look, if you can't collect unemployment or collect any sick pay or what have you for leaving work, we will provide a subsidy for that. we will provide a hotel room if you live in close quarters. >> reporter: the city and other organizations have brought testing to the mission and have helped by distributing food, but the numbers here remain high. 50% of all reported cases in san francisco. >> all the folks that can shelter in place and order door dash andheir fo to threstaurant and look in the back kitchen.

ideology would put a historic right wing stamp on the high court just weeks before the 2020 election. and we'll have more on this coming up later in our show this morning. meantime governor newsom is announcing the closure of a state run prison in tracy. the prezzen is part of governor newsom's plan to close two prisons by 2023. the goal is to reduce incarceration while investing in crime prevention and community safety. next year's tracy prison shutdown will save the state about $182 million per year. and today more than 3,000 health care workers will be announcing their plans to go on strike in alameda county. nurses and health workers on the seiu 1021 union will be issuing the ten day notice to the alameda health system today. leaders say management has repeatly failed to provide enough resources to take care of patients since long before the pandemic started.

alameda health systems says on its website it's agreeing to an outside negotiator to secure a fair labor contract. and more than 40 public schools across san francisco could be renamed all in an effort to increase relevance and appropriateness. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo tells us how an advisory committee has been working on the changes now for months. >> reporter: the names of presidents and other political and historic figures could soon be purged from dozens of san francisco public schools. george washington, diane feinstein, even abraham lincoln meeting a list of renaming criteria, standards that question anyone directly involved in colonization or genocide of people, slave owners, those exploiting workers and much more. >> someone who had been a confederate general, someone like that that makes sense, but lincoln, really? >> reporter: add visery committee was launched in 2018. their assessment found president

lincoln wasn't a true abolitionist and on wednesday they compiled a list of more than 40 schools. >> i'm thinking about the slave and thinking about how they would feel right now. >> reporter: but wilson cong, a 2005 graduate of lincoln high school says he's hoping the board instead finds way to acknowledge each figure for both their feats and faults. >> why don't we take that as a lesson learned and teach an extra course on civil rights, on things they did back then in that time period, what happened back then that was uncomfortable to the students because that's when i learn about the history of america. >> history is a tricky thing. it's usually seen in a rearview mirror and in this case the road they've decided to go down is going to be possibly a bumpy one. >> reporter: phil mater first reported on this in july. a meeting about name suggestions will be held in november. i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. being asked to be some of the

first participants in the new climate action corp. governor newsom announced his plan yesterday. san jose is one of the first cities that's going to be participating. >> climate change is burning down our forests. it's lapping up our shores. it's choking our lungs. the impacts are real, and we see them today and all too recently. >> corp members will help combat the climate crisis via volunteering, environmental work and community engagement. people can volunteer on the program's website. there's also a fellowship program which provides a stipend. okay, a fan or an extra one could help you get through this weekend more comfortably but you might have trouble finding oner says the problem can be traced to the pandemic. >> reporter: it's a fact people are going wild with home improvements. there was a run on freezers and refrigerators in the spring. with factories scaling back and consumers in a buying frame of mind a shortage of major home appliances is now materializing.

some of the purchases are based on necessity. >> more people are replacing their appliances because, frankly, they're getting more use than they used to get. >> reporter: the life-span for most appliances is just 7 or 8 years. and if you're working from home you're opening the fridge 20 times more per day. you might be cooking more at home. that's all going to affect the need for repairs. there is a backlog in repair services. >> many appliances are back ordered. we have the benefit of having a large selection. >> reporter: other stores report they're selling floor models to desperate buyers who can't wait. those appliances like washers and driers and ovens have contributed to a 9% increase in the cargo coming over from asia in the last few months into the port of oakland. on many days ships have to anchor because berths aren't immediately available. >> you're even seeing the shortages in some cases of very

prosaic things like the trailers you put the container on. so while we have this surge it may take a little longer to get your cargo. >> reporter: retailers suggest being flexible about the brand and the features on a home appliance to score one quickly. >> we would anticipate a lot more remote workers and a continuing demand. >> reporter: extremely high demand is projected for the next 6 to 8 months. in the east bay i'm leslie brinkly, abc 7 news. >> and part of our effort to build a better bay area includes how the economy is really changing during the pandemic. in the midst of it all two black sisters in the south bay are opening their own business. nirvana soul is the first black owned coffee shop in downtown san jose. it opens inside the weston san jose. they finalized their loan shortly after covid-19 hit. they chronicled their journey on social media taking their followers through all the changes as they gear up to open their doors. >> from the very beginning we

said we wanted to build this business with people around here in this community. we want to be transparent about how we were doing it, the roadblocks we were facing and how we were overcoming those roadblocks. >> nirvana soul opens at 9:00 this morning. the walls of the coffee shop features work from local artists. all right, lisa, a lot of people are trying to get fans if you haven't already gotten one, and it's going to be hot so hopefully people are able to find something to keep cool. >> it's going to be a prolonged extension of our heat. in fact, our inland valleys will see triple digits probably through thursday. the rest of us -- maybe around the bay come tuesday or wednesday. that's iffy and we're looking at a red flag warning to begin tonight. we still have that onshore flow warning keeping temperatures at the coast, comfortable in the 60s. but the fog not really out there. there are a few patches, but live doppler 7 showing you there it is very sketch at the best.

so as we look at a couple of numbers here around the bay area temperatures are pretty mild. talking mid and upper 60s, so it is pretty mild in the north bay, and elsewhere numbers are going to be coming up quickly today. into this heat as we get into later on your saturday night. so the winds have already shifted. north bay here you can see the clouds and the rain. we should be so lucky, right, up in oregon and seattle. 59 in san jose, and as we look at our 24 hour temperature change 14 degrees warmer in santa rosa. a little cooler over into the east bay, but the winds are already out of the north. mt. diablo about 23 miles an our. our forecast highlights increasing wind and fire danger. heat wave into early next week. and those skies are going to get a little smokier. what we've had in the sierra

nevada that's all going to be pushing our way. moderate air quality through our east bay today and then in the days ahead as our temperatures warm, the winds kick up, this will change and we'll see less of that blue sky. let's take you through the next several days with the wind by tonight overnight we're looking at 20 mile an hour gusts. if you can follow the color contour and you can see much stronger they get, they back up a tiny bit as we get into early sunday but another wave with strong winds sunday into monday, and the advisory is up until about 11:00. let's check out the relative humidity, how that declines. 81% in the city. by later on today about 30% in concord, and along the coast we're still doing pretty good. but here's your sunday morning. we recover 60% to 70%. look at your sunday afternoon. we're at 17% out in the east bay at 19% in fremont by 4:00 tomorrow, 10% santa rosa and going to get even dryer into

monday perhaps with some records. a few high clouds from time to time. and you'll get that sea breeze with mid and upper 60s at the coast so should feel pretty good today. 75 downtown, up in the north bay look for 89 santa rosa. 87 for you in napa. near east bay a warm one today in oakland at 80. a nice afternoon though in union settee feeling pretty good at 81. wish we could just leave it there, but as we head inland pleasanton 90. and monday looks to be the hottest day, still gusty offshore winds. 104 out towards antioch, and by tuesday even though you see the numbers drop off a bit at the coast and around the bay no relief inland until perhaps the end of the week. so really take it easy out there, but today should be kind of nice out there. >> sounds good. enjoy it while we can.

depends on it. four states in two days trying to raise doubts about the legitimacy of the election along the way. >> we may end up in a dispute for a long time because that's the way they want it, but we're going to end up winning, that's for sure. >> reporter: the president continues to warn of widespread voter fraud. despite the fbi director's assessment that there's been no such thing. >> is voting by mail secure? >> we have not seen historically any kind of coordinated national voter fraud effort in a major election, whether it's by mail or otherwise. >> reporter: that prompted something rarely if ever seen. the white house chief of staff publicly slapping down the fbi director chosen by the president himself. >> with all due respect to finding e-mails of his own fbi e let alone figuring out whether there's any kind of voter fraud. perhaps he needs to get involved on the ground and then he would change his testimony on capitol hill. >> reporter: but it's not just

director wray. state election authorities across the country say there's no evidence of widespread voter fraud. still, president trump talks about it again and again highlighting states that mail ballots to all registered voters whether they asked for them or not. >> what's going on with balloting will prove to be one of the great catastrophes in the history of our country. it's a scam, a hoax. they're sending out tens of millions of ballots to everybody. >> reporter: the president makes it seem this is happening to all the highly contested states but in fact only nine states send ballots to registered voters and only one of those, nev is considered a battleground state in this election. and there are safe guards to make sure no one can vote twice. even as the president attacks mail-in voting he's doing it himself, and his team is urging supporters to do the same. his son donald trump, jr. taping this robo call. >> voting absentee is a safe and secure way to guarantee your voice is heard. that's why president trump wants

website says the restaurant's lease was up this year. combine that with the cost of reopening, the permanent closure became the only viable option. the fish market does have five other locations including in santa clara, pally alto and san mateo. those locations will remain open. the holiday begins sundown on sunday and the congregation could be dealing with searing heat and the possibility of a power outage. >> on this day you're supposed to be quite serious. now, it'll get even more serious if there are new fires, right, and we will again sort of be in despair. so those bigger issues will hit us. if there's rolling black outs or whatever we'll roll with it. we'll figure it out.
