map. >> let's take a look at the so-called glass fire. 0 pers 0% contained. an estimated 1500 people included in the evacuation order. another 1,400 homes were under warnings with 1,400 people to get ready to go. >> let's begin with our meteorologist drew tuma. we know these conditions are dangerous for firefighters. >> yeah. and the winds will be a problem overnight as another burt of those offshore winds are expected to arrive. it is hot, dry, we're at 90 degrees. humidity is bone dry at 15%. the winds out of the north are gusting to about 14 miles per hour. around our hills currently, you can see diablo gusting to 30. you can see mount st. helena gusting as well. let's show you what we're watching later this evening. hour by hour we go. we're expecting around 10:00

p.m. you can see winds gusting 25 on 30-miles-per-hour and it does continue into the early morning hours. we're still tracking the very active onshore winds. so we continue to have the red flag warning. the east bay hills and the inland east bay. this will last until 9:00 p.m. we'll take a look at the winds, when they finally relax and our heat wave, day number two, arrives tomorrow. >> all right. thank you. we have team coverage on this fire. let's begin with cornell bernard who has been up there all day. cornell? >> reporter: boy, eric, it has been a very long day for firefighters and it's not over yet. things still change go by the hour on this fire which continues to grow in size. check it out. this is the roadblock for evacutions here at silverado trail and deer park road. the smoke, the fire burning over

that ridge. you can see all the smoke pumping into the napa valley. hundreds of folks forced from their say they're feeling very lucky to be alive tonight. >> the fire was ferocious. exploding in size within hours. burning through the hills of wine country, northeast of st. helena. cal fire was attacking the glass fire from all sides it is a burned across the ridge. choppers made countless runs, dumping water. sky 7 caught the moment the dc-10 dumped retardant on the blaze. >> it's a battle. >> fire crews are challenged with red nag conditions, hot temperatures, and gusty winds. >> the fire is so hot at this point, it's made it down to the silverado trail burning on both sides of the road. >> we got here about 4:30, and we've been working hard ever since. >> jan lives in the evacuation zone on north crystal springs

road. she said there was no time to grab anything. >> we woke up in the middle of the night and there were flames. we could see flames. we ran to the car. i was in my underwear. i still haven't, i still haven't found my dog. we left with nothing. >> reporter: jan's beloved doing is zaza ran away during the chaos. sadly the dog was found hours later badly burned, now being treated by a vet. >> she's 11 years old with a pretty silver face. >> we're evacuating our hospital and we're no longer accepting patients until it is safe. >> reporter: 55 patients were moved by ambulance to other facilities as the fire got closer. some were air lifted out by chopper. deja vu for many who were forced to leave just weeks ago for the lnu fire. >> it gets pretty tiring. it seems like it is turning into a lifestyle. being here. it's a beautiful place but this is not right.

>> yeah. she said it is too stressful. she is ready to move from the area. check it out, a very smoky, very hazy sun. it gives you the idea how much smoke is out here. they've been battling high winds, hot temperatures all day. it seems like the winds have died down. some other good news, we saw some reinforcement firefighters show up from southern california. hive in st. helena, cornell bernard. >> and we'll take all the good news we can get. thank you. our team coverage continues now with abc news reporter luz penna. she has more on the hospital evacuation. luz? >> reporter: we are in the thick of it. i want to point to the sky above us. it has turned orange. you can see the plume of smoke. i want to ask my photographer, you can see the names burning.

firefighters are going up this ridge right here. you can see them backing up. they're gettingle of the engines gearing up to go to this hill. you can see them strategizing. i want to point to the st. helena hospital to my left. 55 patients were evacuated earlier today. there is a skeleton crew left behind. they were watering the roof to make sure that they are ready in case they do make it. it is incredible, these images that you're seeing. many of them woke up to the names so close to their homes. now we're seeing how this fire is extending over this ridge. 1,500 acres burned and 0% contained. i just spoke 30 minutes ago with the p.i.o. for the st. helena hospital that they're hoping for the best. they're hoping these evacuation dozen make sense in this community and many do leave because the biggest concern is

this communiy, this is the second time they're experiencing evacuations in less than two months. >> cleaning all the air filters, they replaced the air scrubbers throughout the hospital to keep our air safe. and they were keeping everything up and running, functional properly. you have to go through with something like the and turn off certain medical devices, lock up narcotics, things like that. so all of that was done in a very methodical fashion. >> reporter: now, we have deer park road and silverado trail. both are under evacuation warning. we drove out several minutes ago and found a family packing up and getting ready to evacuate. we spoke to 28-year-old carlo who has lived here his entire life with tears in his eyes who said he is not ready to see his home and his community go. >> it's the word.

it's comfortable. peaceful. just the people that i love, the experiences i've had since i was a kid. we've had videos, all kinds of stuff here. i could spend forever but probably best we keep it short for safety. >> reporter: back here live, you can see the hazy sky and the orange glare over this ridge. we've heard from several residents that the sound of those resources do give them some sort of peace of mind, that they are getting help from the community. they say a month ago, the fire was maybe eight miles from this specific area. now it's about two miles away. it is getting closer. you can see this fire right behind us. i just spoke to several fellow firefighters who say this is concerning, that this is burning so quickly, and at this level you can see the wind just picking up with minute after

minute and they're hoping people will adhere to the evacuation warnings and they do leave this area. luz pena, abc7 news. >> thank you. you saw how close the names were to where luz is standing. this shows where it is burning in the napa vineyards. there is a large evacuation zone in and around the fire. j.r. joins us now with that part of the story. >> reporter: we're talking about 6,000 people who have been either ordered to evacuate or are in an evacuation warning area. that is certainly concerning by itself. add to the fact we are dealing with triple digit temperatures and you have concerning situations. outside of this evacuation center, many people are staying in their cars where they can turn on the air conditioning. >> in this parking lot, when i

came, the whole lot was filled. >> reporter: sandra brown is referring to the crosswalk community church in napa. the main evacuation central for the glass fire. >> we just had to get out. us and maybe 10 or 12 cars behind us. >> reporter: evacuation orders have been given to at least 1,500 people. another 4,500 people are in evacuation warning zones. brown says it is busy inside this evacuation central and not as cool as her car. her family all from north of st. helena had three cars side by side, clothes covering some of the windows and animals like her dog chewy in the back seat. >> thank god we're alive. i've never had this happen. >> reporter: others unformerly have dealt with it. she has been through four fires and lost all her items in paradise. a reason why brown says she's thankful to be okay. even if the triple digit temperatures have added to the temperatures.

>> i feel like we're blessed. if you think about it, your life, you can't get that back. >> reporter: and back out here hive at the crosswalk community church in napa. this is one of the main evacuation centers, the parking lots, specifically cars and inside vehicles has been one of the busiest spots here. they don't have air conditioning in the room i was in earlier. so all the doors are open. the good news is that the sun is starting to go down. not as hot as it is earlier. we are still talking triple digit temperatures and thousands of people who have been evacuated. live in napa, j.r. stone. abc 7 news. >> all right. we appreciate that report. thanks. now san francisco firefighters are headed to napa county to help. the san francisco fire department also sent four ambulances to help with hospital

evacuations. a public safety power shutoff is underway for thousands of pg&e customers. they moved to the second phase of the shutoffs, mainly in the central sierra region this afternoon. the utility was able to down grade the number of customers affected to 54,000 because of better than expected weather conditions. they're expected to lose power by 8:00 tonight. about 40% of the shutoffs were pg&e hopes to restore power by late mond evening. coming up next, a scare involving joe montana. how he saved his grand child from a suspected myi'm 70 and i live in mill valley, california.

hour. she discussed the moments before she decided to leave. >> i got in the house to charming my phone. when i came out, i just about fell sideways. i could not believe the magnitude of the fire and how quickly it had grown. it was literally directly across the street from our residence, all the way up the street to the adjacent properties where i had just witnessed very little fire. and the entire mountain was ablaze. >> she was in her car away from the fire. >> at least she can breathe a sigh of relief. but so many are watching it very closely. >> yeah. we're tracking our heat wave and our air quality. you can certainly see the haze, the smoke and the atmosphere. the glass fire burning in napa

county. a spare the air day is in effect for tomorrow. it will fluctuate mean moderate and poor. that means the level will be between 51 and 150 because of the smoke in our atmosphere. it's a warm evening out. there hot in the east bay. people in in san jose, 98, that current temperature in than rosa. it will continue until tomorrow evening. tomorrow looks even hotter than today. so overnight, one of those uncomfortably warm nights we have in september. low 60s to low 70s. that's about it. even warmer in our hills overnight under clear skies. we are tracking our winds very closely. we are still under that red flag warning. this will go until tomorrow night. the north bay, all for the bay, solano county, lake county, the

east bay hills and the inland east bay, tracking the wind gusts. the next window we're watching is about an eight-hour window. starting at 10:00 tonight. you can see it becoming active. overnight after that time period, after 6:00 a.m., it looks like the winds will rapidly weaken into the early afternoon where the winds are less than about ten-miles-per-hour. look at the temperatures. by 10:00 a.m., we're already into the 80s in a lot of 60s. we'll likely go to 90 degrees. so tomorrow is a very warm day. half moon bay, 96 in san jose. 100 in santa rosa, 102 in
