it is tuesday, september 29th. so much to update you on this morning, but, first, we want to check in on the fire conditions with mike. good morning. >> good morning, kumasi, reggie, jobina. hi, everybody. let's talk about some good news. the critical fire conditions and the red flag warning is gone. the dangerous heat from yesterday, the record setting dangerous heat is over. so going to be hot. but here's what we're left with. unhealthy air due to the smoke being produced by the fires up north. we are calling it the glass incident now. because there's three of them up there. our air quality forecast unhealthy for all of us and only up in the north bay today for the rest of us, it's poor. but that's going to fluctuate because the winds variable the next four days and thursday is a day i'm really keeping an eye on for the possibility of the air quality getting even worse and critical fire conditions coming back. right now you can see all of us are green to moderate. head outside with the confidence that the air you breathe is healthy and take it all in.

west wind at 11. right now a very, very shallow and kind of foggy marine layer that is kind of really stuck at the coast and trying to push into the bay the next couple hours and quickly move back to the coast keeping you in the 60s and 70s and the rest of us in the 80s and 90s this afternoon. reggie? >> thank you. today we expect to get an update from cal fire to talk about how widespread the glass fire got overnight. jobina fortson at the live desk with details. jobina? >> reggie. cal fire will give that update from the sonoma county fairgrounds at 11:00. ee wie will stream it on our ma. yesterday governor gavin newsom declared a state of emergency in napa, sonoma and shasta county for the explosive wildfires burning out of control. this will help direct more resources to the fire fight. governor newsom said he also sent a letter to president trump asking for fire assistance grants. here's where the glass fire is burning right now in napa and

sonoma counties. it's scorched more than 36,000 acres and is still zero percent contained. take a look at the current evacuations in napa county. you can see the city of calistoga is fully in the blue area, which means mandatory evacuations. yellow means an evacuation warning. this is governor newsom's second time declaring a state of emergency because of the wildfires this year. just last month, he made a disaster declaration because of the fires burning in the bay area. kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. santa rosa city schools will not hold any online classes today or tomorrow because of those fires and the evacuations. at least 68,000 sonoma county residents are under evacuation orders right now. so, here's a look at the mandatory evacuation zones. they are the ones that you see in orange. the yellow area is evacuation warnings. abc7 news reporter julian glover is live at sonoma marin fairgrounds in petaluma with more on this.

julian. >> good morning, kumasi. tens of thousands of residents in the north bay told to evacuate their homes to seek safety here at the sonoma marin fairgrounds. just one of five shelters in the county now accepting people. though they are actually housing people. if you come here, you have to be in your car or rv and it appears they still have plenty of space at this time. we do know that space is limited at all of the shelters in sonoma county. covid concerns keeping those shelters far from what would be their max capacity. at least one of the shelters are at capacity. we spoke to a couple yesterday who had to leave their homes immediately on sunday. they told us the deja vu of evacuating at a moment's notice is getting old. >> we went through the 2017 kind of the same scenario. we got our bags ready to go, but, still, at the last minute, even thothouugh you think you'r

ready you're scurrying around looking for the last few things. looking at your list and checking it twice. >> here at the sonoma marin fairgrounds, plenty of space, but things did have to transfort off. just days before the glass fire broke out and now you can see behind me several rvs and cars now seeking refuge as they've had to evacuate their homes within just a moment's notice. what you heard from that couple there is the story of so many people in sonoma county this morning. for now reporting live, julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you, julian. several wineries and vineyards have been destroyed or damaged by the glass fire and that includes part of the castle winery in calistoga. the owner says the nightmare come true. the loss is significant.

>> our main building, the castle, did not burn. so far. >> yeah, you heard him say that. luckily the 13th century inspired tuscan manor on the property did survive. devastation hit santa rosa with several homes burned in the skyhawk neighborhood. abc7 news was there as a hot spot flared up last night at a home. evacuees say they have seen this all before. >> we get out of here a little quicker than before, but it seems like, you know, it's becoming a pattern. we don't want to have to get too adapted to this evacuation stuff. >> firefighters use a control burn to battle flames at the state park. they say the winds did die down yesterday and that helped the fire fight. abc7 has teamed up with the red cross and tv stations across the west coast to raise money for people affected by the fires. you can donate online right now.

triple-digit temperatures. they're ready to respond to any type of regitation and outin dublin, unincorporated livermore and sunol areas. >> those firefighters doing all they can with that planning you just heard so that they're not caught off guard. >> yeah, no. no matter how you look at it, reggie. that news is not good. and the earth is accelerating. it's warming faster than the models were predicting in the '90s and a couple decades agoe. let's look at what is going on with our temperatures in the south bay. feels much more comfortable and the air is easier to breathe right now. 59 around campbell and morgan hill the cool spots and most of you in the 60s. look at this mid 50s to mid 60s out there. temperatures up to 15 to 16 degrees cooler than yesterday. 68 right there as we look from our roof camera at the ferry building and also the marine

layer and still going to be hot inland and it's going to be better this weekend to do anything outside as far as chores, yard work or even walking the dog. you can see the sea breeze today and it under cuts most of the smoke for most of us outside of the north bay. we're getting pretty lucky. as we head into tomorrow, notice the see breeze starts collapsing in the morning and start to collapse into the afternoon hours and the air quality by this forecast could be even worse tomorrow and the conditions for thursday could be even worse than wednesday. we'll talk about that coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. here's jobina. >> thank you, mike. goodern moin morning, everyone. looking at the map of our bay area and the roads. the two slow spots we want to point out. moving through oakland, you can see circle there and southbound 880 in between 23rd and 29th avenues. road work being picked up there and slow coming out of tracy into the altamont pass but picks up once you reach livermore.

secretary dr. mark ghaly will speak at noon and bring it to you live on our abc7 news app. a great way to see where your county stands in transition rates. it's all updated on our website abc7news.com. the governor says some bay area counties could move into the next tier starting today. this comes as the world is reaching a sobering mildstone. the covid-19 death toll passed 1 million, that includes more than 200,000 americans. some local health officials are worried because the transition rate is creeping up here in california. there is some good news for playgrounds. the state is now allowing them to reopen for the first time since march, but restrictions you need to know about. any public playground that is fully outdoors can reopen. anyone 2 years of age or older has to wear a face mask. officials say do not use the playground if different households cannot maintain

social distance. you can't eat or drink at the playground. that is to make sure that everyone is keeping their masken. and visitors should limit their stay to 30 minutes. as wildfires rage across california, there is no question that many firefighters are being pushed to the limit. a san jose firefighter coming off of a 60-hour shift ended up racing to santa rosa to help save his girlfriend's parents' home. >> i drove straight up to their house and i was going to hang out and triage it and basically move anything flammable away from it and cut down what trees i could. >> he saw flames when he turned the corner in their neighborhood. he the fire fighting gear in his car and soon after santa rosa firefighters got there, too. they worked together and then n firefighters moved on to the next scenes. he called the on-duty firefighters the real heroes. i mean, aren't they, though? that is a lot of work and for

such a little amount of time. >> it is. i just saw, it's really amazing to see these firefighters who are coming from totally different states to come. we appreciate all of that. >> that is so nice to hear. i mean, they have to be exhausted. this is so long and so nonstop. they go from one fire to another fire and another fire. when do they get a break? for a couple months during the winter when they go back to their regular positions? hat's off. all but love for you guys. and respect. san jose 61 right now under a partly cloudy sky. not as hot today but air quality issues do stick around. comfy lows tonight. the smoke will increase and we'll get relief from the heat and the unhealthy air and we have to wait until saturday and sunday. here's a look at your fog

forecast and overlayed the winds on there and you can see how they're light and by noon most of the cloud cover back to the coast and even there we'll have a little bit of sunshine from time to time. but notice by the time we get to 7:00, it gets a little bit stronger. so, the closer you are to the coast the more pleasant it will be air quality wise and temperature wise. as you move inland, nearing the upper 90s in morgan hill and gilroy and mid 90s through most of the south bay with more smoke and fewer clouds and our records today. 79 at millbrae and low 70s along the coast and mid to upper 70s wouldn't be surprised if a few areas hit 80 around downtown and south san francisco and sausalito. 88 in san rafael and everybody else mid to low 90s through the north bay. 78 in richmond and 82 in oakland and everybody else mid to upper 80s along the east bay shore and we have mid 90s to near 100 in our inland east bay neighborhoods. for the smoke and the clouds. look at this, we've got temperatures in the mid 50s to

well, one of our main three components we look for is gone, the winds. the heat and the dry air is going to remain through at least friday. i mean, look at these temperatures near 80 in san francisco with 80s, 90s and even 100s as you head through the bay. we'll get rid of the 100s and most of the 90s by saturday and still 60s, 70s and a80s and one of our coolest day with 60s along the coast in san francisco and 70s around the bay and 80s inland. also be some of our cleanest air we breathe this weekend. >> that sounds nice, thank you, mike. in an effort to stop the spread of covid-19, local health

amy hollyfield live in calistoga this morning. amy? >> reggie, here is why that evacuation order was put into place. look behind me. the glass fire is still very much a threat. i am standing on rose del road looking up at this burning hillside. just a couple hundred feet away from the new four seasons resort and residences set to open later this year. there are also homes in this area. the glass fire showed how erratic and strong it can be. yesterday afternoon when it went after the meadow wood resort. we had checked out on the property early in the morning and it looked fine. and firefighters were stationed there to watch over it. so, we left thinking meadow wood looked good. by the afternoon, the resort was on fire. the three-star michelin restaurant burned down. by early evening, the order came down for the 5,000 residents of calistoga to evacuate. people here say they're getting so tired of this. >> and it's been unbelievable.

and since '17 every year horrible fires. unusually early, especially the lightning fire and now with this happening, it was crazy. >> city officials say there hasn't been any damage or loss in the city of calistoga, but areas surrounding the city have been burned. so, they made the decision to clear everyone out. and you can see why, look behind me. that is over my right shoulder. a moment ago we were showing you over my left shoulder. we have fire on both sides of me to show you this morning. here we are 48 hours into this glass fire. the glass fire has destroyed 113 structures. they do not know what started this fire. reporting live in calistoga, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> quite a stunning image with the vineyard behind you.

nights for sleeping as the air remains clean and cool. 64 and you can see as far as your commute goes. everything is pretty good except for a little fog right along the immediate coast and the fact there is a spare the air today. you want to recirculate that air as much as possible. here's a look at the fire conditions up in the glass fire and you can see the temperatures remaining in the mid 90s and well over 100 through saturday. humidity levels down 20 to 30%. and as we hit the 80s over the weekend, the humidity level start to rise. we'll see some improving conditions for the firefighters up there. all right, that is a look at the forecast for now. we'll take a look at what's going on as far as the next seven days coming up. let's get over to jobina and look at the morning commute. >> thank you, mike. good morning. i do have unfortunately a sig alert to talk about. it's right on the line of el cerito in richmond. as we bring in the maps showing the area. this is involving a motorcycle and at least three lanes are blocked right now. westbound 80 before the potrero

shelter in sonoma county and waiting hours to hear the shelter they arrived to was at max capacity and at least one of the shelters, the petaluma veteran's building they are taking in animals there already at capacity. we spoke to a couple yesterday who had to leave their home sunday after hearing those sirens closing in. >> we just heard more and more sirens and pretty soon we got the warning alert. and then we decided to leave when there was a warning rather than stay when you were told to evacuate because it's really hard to get out because we live just off calistoga road and it's bumper to bumper. it took us an hour to get from just below modisito avenue is normally a two-minute drive. bumper to bumper. >> and this morning here at the

the new york stock exchange right now as trading gets under way this morning. you can see we're down not too much. about 27 points at this time. the cdc has just issued new guidelines for how to celebrate or not celebrate thanksgiving. the agency says the safest way to do this is to stay at home and avoid any unnecessary travel. and a list of recommendations includes having a small dinner with only the people who live with you. having a virtual dinner and sharing recipes with friends and family and shopping online rather than in person on black friday. for some of us, that will be a very small thanksgiving, i guess. >> yeah. because my family -- >> it's so hard to hear. >> i know. >> i mean, some of us haven't seen our families since this began and some of us, you know, have family that is pretty up there in years and you get a little worried about them. you want to be with them as much as possible.
