finds himself going head to head. there's the defense with rojas, berti and cooper on that right side. >> chipper: look at those shadows, boog. this is when it gets tough. the pitcher is in the sunlight. you see the ball come out of his fingertips in the sunlight. it immediately goes into the shadow. makes it really tough to pick up rotation. that's why you might see a couple guys flinch on pitches close. >> jon: in there for a strike. now it's 3-2. popped in the air. left field. rojas fighting the shadows and the wind and he makes the grab.

on sunday. a center fielder hit in the head by clark schmidt. suffered a contusion to r. thankful for that helmet that went spinning off.oday he's gote hits. scored a run. anchored that defense in center field. dan winkler delivers the first pitch of the inning. 18 appearances, 2.95 the e.r.a. just about a strike out per inning. the walk rate a little high. look out. got him on the hand. ouch. he's in some pain.
2:09 pm
that is not good. >> chipper: this is what pitchers have been trying t rigt there. it's not that hard to break that bone. when you talk about him leading with the hands right here and gets it on the bottom part, that is your fifth metacarpal that takes the brunt. looked like he might have taken the hand off the bat, anticipating getting hit which quite honestly could save him. he's going to need some x-rays though. >> jon: rojas asked him if he's okay.
2:10 pm
marte coming out as he gets plunk plunked. that would be a huge loss. >> chipper: really would. as we said earlier, he's been a great pick up for the marlins. he throws up good at-bat after good at-bat. great influence in the clubhouse. that thing looks like it's swelling up pretty good. hopefully it's not broken. >> jon: mondte harrison is at first. he's running for him.
2:11 pm
that one clips the outside corner. harrison the runner at first. aguilar unhappy with pat holberg. i think he got that one right. >> chipper: he's been unhappy about a couple of them and not been shy about letting him know about it. i'm pretty sure both of them were strikes. >> jon: yep. off the outside edge. now 1-1. aguilar with a big hit to add two more to thes'al in the seventh inning.

2:13 pm
powered by google cloud. jesus aguilar able to get one out just below the tribune sign. 35 degrees on the launch angle. the exit velocity just under 98. for jesus aguilar who hit eight during the regular year, that was big. if you wonder -- chipper, we touched on this -- why there's so much emphasis in terms of exit velocity, process. do it this way, i understand the idea that a hit is a hit. if you think about trying to hit it hard, if you hit the ball 95 or above this year, you hit over .500. if you just stay in the process of hit it hard, hit it hard, if you hit 95 and above all the time, you're going to end up on
2:14 pm
the right side. .5 .510 >> chipper: .510 is pretty good. i'll take that. >> jon: more of that analysis from chipper jones coming up. the old broadcasting school paying off. >> chipper: he's not the best color man in the league for nothing. >> jon: 1-0. check swing. did he go? yes, he did say, will little. >> chipper: brian anderson looks baffled. >> jon: little bit. >> chipper: he's had a rough day. he's 0-4 with three strike outs. i don't think he's too happy with that call and the check swing.
2:15 pm
>> jon: the 1-1 outside. >> chipper: looking at dan winkler, the stuff has never been the question for dan. even when he was in atlanta, it was too erratic. too many walks. too many noncompetitive pitches. you're seeing him here and the stuff is electric. >> jon: 2-1 now. swing and a miss. >> chipper: the consistency remains a struggle. >> jon: one out, man at first. marlins leading 5-1 with anderson at the plate. one of the five guys that stayed on the active roster all year along with aguilar, lopez, and kintzler. kintzler up and loosening and likely to come in and finish this one.
2:16 pm
pretty amazing when you think about 174 roster moves. mike hill president of baseball jeter,on matting their errick manager. they had to deal with a lot. there's no training for a pandemic. 18 positive covid tests. they used 61 players. you'll see at times 35 and 27. the reason it doesn't add up to 61 is because logan forsythe pitched and he made his debut. one guy was in both categories. if you're interested and checking my math at home. >> chipper: really is amazing the way they've been able to
2:17 pm

2:19 pm
outside the door. >> jon: technical term, red, white and blue swirly thing. thu. pole. hu cutting hair. his son willie does too. this is what you're tuning in for. that's on the corner for a strike. obviously this marlins organization, hugo is a guy that was really tight with jose fernandez. the marlins clinched the playoffs four years to the day of his passing. pretty incredible. cooper hanging in there. marlins have delivered good at-bat tos today.
2:20 pm
hung around and two big swings. one by dickerson in the seventh has been getting in the loose. >> chipper: speaking of fernandez, can you imagine this rotation if he was in it? >> jon: he was one of the best strike o strike-out pitchers we've ever seen. >> chipper: every fifth day he was must-see tv. when he took the mound, >>onswing and a miss. winkler gets cooper. that's the inning. we go to the bottom of the ninth. last chance for the cubs. it's 5-1.

2:25 pm
wow, that was well-placed. >> chipper: as i was saying, you get weak contact to the right side, but this ball has eyes. this is right off the first. what a good pitch boring in on the right hander. he squeezes it on the line. that's a beautiful thing as a hitter. >> jon: first runner in scoring position for the cubs since the fourth inning. here's jason heyward. chipper, that picture that jesse showed us of kintzler in the hotel, i can't even imagine. we sit here and do the ha ha that's funny. no, that's how he got his work in. legit. that's how he was trying to stay sharp.
2:26 pm
they had guys putting sanitary socks and throwing the ball into the socks so they could simulate throwing in the hotel. rojas pulls that down. one away. here's caleb smith. check this out. the ball is in the sock so it won't come out. watch. he's throwing it full. regular effort. that's what they had to do. >> chipper: hey, these guys are serious about their jobs. they need to stay in shape. they're confident that the season is going to continue. you can't take a week, ten days, two weeks off and not throw. i saw a similar post by jack flaherty on social media where he had his mattress pressed against the wall. he threw into that mattress.
2:27 pm
that was how they stayed in shape. >> jon: by the way, chipper, just an update on our breaking information, hugo actually texted me to let me know he does have a barber's pole outside of the shop at marlins park. >> chipper: i've been out of the loop for a little while, boog. >> jon: outside and it's 1-2. kintzler trying to record the final two outs and give the marlins a 1-0 lead in this best of three.
2:28 pm
>> chipper: boog, how about this shadowwise? you have the pitcher in the shadow. halfway in between homeplate and the pitcher's mound you have sun. it's almost like a blink. it's really tough to hit in these conditions in this particular ballpark. >> jon: wow, look at that. no fans. it's like a scrimmage. the only thing -- you know what it remind me of?of?of? going to old busch stadium. they finished games and the high school teams would come out. the stadium would be empty and they were playing games on the field. >> chipper: what a thrill for
