and sonoma fires. it's burned close to 52,000 acres. it's only 2% contained. there are more evacuation orders with flames threatening more than 26,000 structures and the fire destroyed or damaged more than 100 homes so far. thankfully, no injuries have been reported. this map shows where the fire is burning. firefighters are preparing for more dry and breezy conditions with the red flag warning going into effect today, this afternoon, amy hollyfield is in the north bay and we'll check in with her in the next half hour. so it is going to be warm as mike was just saying and it could also be smoky for a lot of you. it's another spare the air day. there was a definite haze lingering. it doesn't look like thing will be clearing up soon. tomorrow, another spare the air day. here's an explanation why the smoke is lingering and why it will take time to dry out. >> the glass fire is burning hotly. it's not controlled very much.

to do something. julian glover is live at ma net a -- san jose airport with more. >> reporter: good morning. it's described as end of a dream career. she was here for seven years. she's one of thousands furloughed as help expired. there's a footprint here at mineta san jose announcing major layoffs and furloughs. a second round of aid has been stalled in washinton for weeks now. thanks to inaction from congress, no telling when it could come forcing airlines to shed tens of thousands of more jobs and kicking them off health care. >> i have dreamed of being a flight attendant when i was a little girl. my dreams came true. i have my dream job. so i have been asking myself, like, what do you do when you lose your dream job? where do you go from there?

i don't have any answers right now. >> reporter: american could furlough 19,000 employees companywide. united could furlough 13,000. delta and southwest airlines say they will be able to avoid major layoffs for now. it might be harder for some to find flights. some small airports won't have commercial flights at all. american airlines alone canceling flights at at least 11 american cities. it's unclear right now if that means more flights will be more crowded and we're working to find out what the exact impact will be at mineta san jose this morning. julian glover, abc 7 news. julian being thank you. this morning, governor newsom cleared his desk of bills, bringing the 2019-2020 legislative session to the close. jobina fortson is at the debts being with what the governor signed and what he didn't. jobina. >> reggie, yes. the governor took action on legislation to end systemic

racism. that includes a bill that is creating a task force to study and develop proposals for potential reparations for the -- >> in some respects, it's rather sad that i'll be signing a couple of these bills, that they weren't addressed decades ago. that we still need to be talking about jury selection, still need to talk about race and relationships to sentencing guidelines. >> the governor also signed a bill requiring public companies to diversify their boards.ds. he also approved some policehol. the governor vetoed several bills, including one that would have made an ethnic studies class a graduation requirement for high school students. and one that would have required workers laid off during the pandemic to be rehired based on seniority in the hotel, airport

and janitorial industries. reggie, back to you. >> jobina, thank you. lawmakers avoided a government shutdown. the government signed a bill overnight. all government operations operating at the current funding levels. the spending bill was needed because the republican-controlled senate has not acted on any of the 12 spending bills that congress has to approve to fund the government every year. what happens next will be determined by the outcome of the november election. all right. let's talk about what's going on with your weather. especially the conditions up in the north bay. that's where all eyes are turning. the winds will blow from northwest to southeast. just about all of us are downwind of these fires the next 24 to 36 hours. so that's of grave concern that ember hopping may start some new fires or the winds will provide fuel and make the fires that are up there right now specifically the dolan and glass fires expand

at a rapid rate and break any containment lines that are set up right now. you can see it's a very hot event today and tomorrow. saturday 91 and then we get all the way down into the 70s by wednesday. the humidity levels jump up quite a bit. so here's a look at the winds. as we head through the morning hours, they're pretty quiet even until lunch-hour. watch around the sunset as they ramp up around 25 to 30 miles per hour. they're going to hit a little earlier in the evening than we thought yesterday and taper a little bit during the overnight hours. that is some good news. that means our best chance of seeing this rapid development would be right after sunset, which isn't great. at least you're not sleeping by then and woken up by mandatory evacuations. there's a brief ramp-up again tomorrow during the mid-morning hours and by the 6:00 hour it's over. let take a look at what's going on tomorrow as far as your temperatures. they're up to 10 degrees warmer. let me focus on san francisco. look at this. we're in the low 60s to low 70s.

kumasi? >> thank you, jobina. here's a reminder if you were worried about the initial deadline to get a real i.d. at the dmv. the department of homeland security announced that it was pushed back to october 1st of 2021 because of covid-19. that means that one year from today you will need a real i.d. driver's license or compliant identification if you want to get on a domestic flight. you also won't be allowed to enter restricted federal facilities like mill tear bases or the white house. san francisco's conservatory of flowers reopens to visitors again. it's been closed since march. there will be new precautions because of covid-19. it will be 25% of normal capacity to make sure there's enough room. people will be required to wear face coverings and visitors are encouraged to buy in advance. they'll be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. cool. put that on my list.

kumasi. >> thank you, mike. first it was called the 19, now the wildfires. it means another week of no school for tens of thousands of students in sonoma and napa counties. at a high school in santa rosa, a classroom at the north end of campus actually burned in the glass fire. the nearby mountainside was blackened and a woman and her two daughters across from the school had to be evacuatesed. dealing in dealing with the pandemic, it's been hard enough. >> you're at home and nothing to do and you can't talk to your friends. this time with the fires, like, when you need your friends, you're not close with them. >> sonoma county superintendent says six out of ten students in the district reported experiencing trauma due to fires. he says the school districts are providing ptsd training and counselors for evacuated students. thurman says his office is

is very much gnarly and burning out of control mostly. amy hollyfield is live in calistoga for us this morning. a amy? >> reporter: reggie, look at the show that he would get to see if he was here. a huge fire burning right behind me. outside of calistoga, i'm southeast of calistoga at st. helena highway. diamond mountain road. just look at that fire raging. here we are on day, let's see, five of this fire. this is what they're still dealing with here on the glass fire here in napa county. i've got video to show you from overnight. some fire activity overnight. this was just after midnight in the town of anglin east of calistoga. this was on summit lake drive. firefighters are saying they've never seen anything like the glass fire. just huge and relentless. they're working nonstop trying to protect people's property. one man told us the fire is

health guidance. going to go to jobina at the live desk. what is this all about? >> yeah, reggie. sources tell abc news that the cdc hasn't updated new health guidance since september 24th. what we're also learning is that abc news did a review showing the timeline that supports the lack of information being updated. a cdc source familiar with the covid-19 response a quote, moratorium, adding, quote, scientists are prevented from updating the cdc website with recommendations, policies and information surrounding covid, end quote. a separate source disagreed and said they're ensuring the review process is being followed. the type of information that has been withheld previously has been vital to hospitals, health officials and local leaders on the front lines providing updated guidance on how to treat, test and slow the spread of covid-19.

the north bay is what we're concerned with. as we head throughout the day, look at the winds ramping up to 30 to 35 miles per hour in many areas. a lot of these reporting stations you see are some of the lower elevations. you can add about 5 to 15 miles per hour on to this as you head up to around 3,000 to 4,000 feet. there will be a calming tonight, which is good. a little bit of a spike mid-morning tomorrow and then the winds will taper completely tomorrow afternoon and the fire threat will subside. as we've talked about the flex alert from 3:00 to 10:00, the reason we don't want you to use electricity, almost everybody in the 90s and 100s each near the coast today. kumasi. >> thank you, mike. breaking news to share a few minutes ago. the u.s. labor department released the latest weekly jobs claims reports. jobina is live tracking the numbers. jobina. >> this is another sign of the economic recovery in the united states slowing. take a look at the numbers we're seeing this morning.
