good morning, kumasi. a flight a tep dapt that we spoke to described it as the end of a dream job or career. he's furloughed as airline aid expired at midnight last night. right now airlines are furloughing tens of thousands of employees. american, delta and united airlines have all announced furloughs and all of those airlines have a major footprint here at mineta san jose national airport. air travel is down 70% from last year. that is, in part, the reason they have to go through with the furloughs. a second round of airline aid has been stalled in washington for weeks. thanks to inaction from congress, there's no telling

when help could come, forcing airlines to shed tens of thousands of more jobs and taking the former employees off their health care. >> i had dreamed of being a flight attendant when i was a little girl. my dreams came true. i have my dream job. i have been asking myself, what do you do when you lose your dream job in where do you go from there? i don't have any answers right now. >> reporter: american could furlough 19,000 employees companywide. united could furlough as many as 13,000. as of now, delta and southwest airlines say they will be able to avoid major layoffs for now. it might be harder for you to find a flight at home the next time you're looking to travel. some small airports will not have any commercial flights and some medium and large airports could see fewer flights. no word this morning on the direct impact here at the second busiest area in the bay area, at mineta san jose airport. if we learn more, we'll update

you. julian glover, abc 7 news. >> thank you, julian. new at 6:00, a study released this morning found that president trump is the main driving force behind the conversation about coronavirus misinformati misinformation. jobina fortson at the live desk with the findings. jobina? >> thank you, kumasi. this is considered to be the first -- misinformation and traditional and online media. what we're seeing is researchers analyzed 38 million articles written in english about the pandemic. when talking about covid-19 misinformation, president trump's name was mentioned in 38% of articles. miracle cures, deep state, bat soup. the president is likely the single largest driver of the covid-19 info dem yik.

welcome back. 6:08 on this thursday. let's talk about our current temperatures. we knew they would be warmer this morning. up to 7 degrees warmer. places like the south bay from 59 in, say mountain view to 67 in san jose. you can see 60s just about everywhere. even 70s and 80s in the higher elevations. look at the unhealthy air in

all right. let's see. a delay in the breonna taylor case. kentucky's attorney general has until friday to release the transcripts of the grand jury deliberations. jobina fortson at the live desk with more on why we have to wait. jobina. >> yes, reggie. a lot of people have been waiting on this. the grand jury's transcripts and recordings during the breonna taylor's case were to be released yesterday. we have a delay now. the kentucky attorney general asked for an extension so names could be redacted. this is necessary to protect witnesses' personal information. a judge agreed to his request and set the new deadline for tomorrow at noon. the grand jury ultimately decided not to charge a louisville police officers for breonna taylor's death. although one officer who fired his gun is charged for endangering the neighbor. the high-profile case has sparked lots of protests and they are continuing right now in

the city of louisville. kumasi? >> thank you. jobina. governor newsom cleared his desk of bills bringing them the 2019-2020 legislative session to a close. one measure will create a task force to study and develop proposals for reparations for descendants of slaves. >> in some respects it's rather sad that these weren't addressed decades ago. that we need to talk about jury selection and talk about race and relationships and sentencing guidelines. >> governor also signed a bill requiring public companies to diversify their boards racially, ethnically and in terms of gender identity. police reform bills also including one with choke holds. one would have made an ethnic studies class a

graduation requirement for high school students. and one for workers laid off to be rehired in seniority. this is at the glass fire. obviously this area has been decimated by the fire. the mundt trailer park. this individual og raf saw these peacocks. not sure where they came from. the force is with firefighters in oregon. a 5-year-old star wars fan wanted to help firefighters. he sent his baby yoda doll in a care package along with a note that said here's a friend for you in case you get lonely. they loved it. baby yoda now force fighting fires with crews on the front lines. the doll's travels are documented in a facebook group called baby yoda fights fires. look at that.

the air quality is okay right now. you're not going to keep the windows open very long. look at the flags on the ferry building or the lack thereof. they aren't moving whatsoever. the stagnant air makes for dangerous heat and air quality and the fire conditions as the breezes pick up, especially across the north bay could enhance the ember displacement and cause more fires just south of where those fires are burning. so we got to keep an eye on that. the flex alert today. try not to use electricity from 3:00 to 10:00. we get a break. got to wait until the weekend. look at this. this is the most benign satellite i've seen. the most limited activity ever in the middle of fall. we've got one system across the u.s. in the great lakes, otherwise, high pressure is dominating the entire lower 48 and bringing us record heat across the state today. but let's zoom down to our neighborhoods. 95 to 103 in the south bay. 91 to 99 on the peninsula.

doesn't that make you melt? anywhere from 19 to 22 degrees above. 90s and 100s to the inland neighborhoods. you can see the breeze kick in tomorrow especially along the coast. some 70s and 80s spilling into the bay. but the 90s still around through at least saturday inland. then look at that, 60s, 70s, 80s by sunday. today is the worst day. sunday one of the best days. mike, thank you. happening today, something new to go check out. the conservatory flowers at san francisco reopening to visitors with modifications to prevent the spread of coronavirus. it's been closed since march because of pandemic. it will limit the number of guests to 25% of normal capacity to make sure there's enough room for social distancing. people will be required to wear face coverings and visitors encouraged to buy advanced tickets. they'll be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. san francisco is moving forward with reopening more

now at 6:30. the glass fire causing more destruction in wine country. governor newsom is expected to assess some of that damage today. we're live in napa county ahead of his visit. what do you do when you lose your dream job? where do you go from there? >> more than 40,000 airline workers out of work this morning. federal funding for the industry ran out at midnight. the impact here in the bay area. all right. here's a live look outside through our exploratorium camera. calm now. but there's a triple threat coming to the bay area. i'm tracking high temperatures and poor air quality. >> good morning everybody. it is thursday, october 1st. mike, you are busy. we'll start with air quality. what should we expect? >> it's another spare the air dare. we have unhealthy air across the bay area. we're waking up to different conditions than yesterday morning. also a lot warmer outside.

that's going to springboard us to a heat advisory that begins at 11:00. that's when the moderate risk of heat illness begins and goes through 8:00. the only area safe, the coast. here's a look at the red flag warning. it's all of our elevations above 1,000 feet. the diablo range, the santa cruz mountains, the north bay. it's a northwest -- any fires that start will blow southeast or any embers that get caught up in the flames will blow southeast. southeast of those fires that are burning right now are going to be more susceptible than anywhere else to see fire spreading or starting. look at the heat. 80 at at coast. 90 in san francisco to 100s inland. it is going to be a difficult day to be outside. thank you, mike. that flex alert is in effect between 3:00 and 10:00 today because of the expected heat wave mike talked about. set your acs to 78 degrees, turning off your lights and not

the town of anglin east of calistoga on summit lake drive. firefighters are saying they've never seen anything like the glass fire, just huge and relentless and burning all over the place. they're working nonstop trying to protect people's property working long hours on the tough fires year after year. it's taking a toll. >> it's taking a toll, not just on them physically, but mentally. because as firefighters, we pride ourselves in getting things done and protecting people. the loss of property and life, you get this feeling like you didn't do your job. >> d.c.-10s and helicopters worked until sunset dropping water on the fryer last night. they were trying hard to take advantage of the calm yesterday to get ahead of today's weather. they brought in more

we've gotten tremendous reviews. >> while the president touts the debate as a big win in his re-election effort, biden campaign official says they raised 21.5 million d on wednesday. the best day of the race. former president, barack obama will be speaking about the upcoming election later today. talking at a tech event hosted by chul yoe. topics include how technology is transforming society and the events of 2020. there are plenty to talk about there. mayor london breed will announce plans to ensure a safe and accessible election november 3rd. the u.s. labor department released the latest weekly jobless claims report. jobina is tracking those numbers. jobina? >> yes. another sign of the slowing recovery of the u.s. economy. we're bringing up these numbers

to show everyone 837,000 people filed for unemployment benefits last week. that's slightly lower than there are 11.7 million continuing claims. this doesn't include the tens of thousands of airline employees that could be out of work starting today. our parent company, disney layoffs. devastating to learn of the numbers here. tomorrow the bureau of labor statistics will report the monthly unemployment rate for the month of september. reggie? >> discouraging. jobina, thank you. a major hit for the travel industry. tens of thousands of airline workers are -- ran out at midnight. airlines are urging congress to take newing action. news reporter julian glover is live with the fallout.

>> reporter: good morning, reggie. it could be tougher for you the next time you're looking to book a flight. we're learning about the major cuts, tens of thousands of employ either furloughed or laid off by several airlines. american, delta and united airlines. all three of whom have a major footprint at mineta san jose airport. congress has been trying to secure extra funding. the first round you have funding back in march saved thousands of flight attendant, bag handler, gate agent and other jobs. if the airlines agreed not to lay them off, that money is gone. >> the last thing we want to do is furlough employees. we've been fighting so hard. >> at delta, we're looking at potentially 2,000 furloughs in pilot ranks if we don't get the grant from the government or,
