they say sending the president to the hospital was just a precaution and that he will be able to work while he's there. on friday trump missed a conference call on covid-19. vice president pence who has tested negative stepped in for him. >> first lady melania trump is remaining at the white house in isolation, also we are told with mild symptoms. officials saying their son barron so far has not tested positive. in addition to the president, his wife and the president's counselor hope hicks, former trump adviser kellyanne conway says she has tested positive and at least one junior west wing employee has also tested positive. so far no cabinet members have reported any infections. until his diagnosis, the president's schedule had been full of campaign events. an abc news' review of his calendar shows him face-to-face with reporters, side by side with gold star families and hobnobbing with donors. the crowds frequently without masks and not keeping their distance. abc's cecilia vega is outside walter reed this morning with

the very latest. cecilia, good morning. >> reporter: hey, whit, good morning to you. president trump's doctors said overnight he is here resting comfortably, but make no mistake this is an earth-shattering development just 31 days out before election day. the president is here now in this hospital for the unforeseeable future as the number of positive cases in his inner circle has grown from his campaign manager overnight to his former aide kellyanne conway. this morning, president trump waking up at walter reed medical center. crowds swarming as marine one touched down. white house doctors recommending he remain hospitalized for the next few days, quote, out of an abundance of caution after his covid symptoms worsened friday. sources say he's experiencing all the hallmark symptoms -- fever, cough, fatigue and chills. but overnight president trump tweeting, going well, i think. thank you to all. love.
7:04 am
the white house doctor says the president has already received his first dose of an experimental antibody cocktail and is being monitored by a team of experts. adding that trump has not required any supplemental oxygen and is resting comfortably. the president also started his first dose of remdesivir, the fda authorized antiviral drug. just 31 days to go until election day, it is not the image anyone in the administration saw coming. president trump exiting the white house wearing a mask during his walk to marine one. his doctor on board, the 74-year-old president headed to walter reed. and before he left, the president filming this brief video he released on twitter. >> i'm going to walter reed hospital. i think i'm doing very well, but we're going to make sure that things work out. the first lady is doing very well. so thank you very much. >> reporter: the white house doctor says the president will be treated with an experimental antibody cocktail and monitored by a team of experts. but this morning, the big question, how did the commander in chief become exposed in the first place?
7:05 am
his son, don junior, didn't have an answer. >> so, you know, if he can get it, probably anyone can. you know, for better or for worse, but, you know, i took they took extensive protocols and it didn't seem to matter. >> now all eyes on saturday's rose garden announcement of the president's supreme court pick, amy coney barrett. the event packed, guests shoulder to shoulder, some hugging, few, if any, wearing masks. now seven people in attendance confirmed positive including one of the president's closest confidants, kellyanne conway, tweeting overnight my symptoms are mild, light cough and feeling fine. i have begun a quarantine process in consultation with physicians. also north carolina senator thom tillis and utah senator mike lee, notre dame university president father john jenkins. five days later one of the closest aides of the president, hope hicks, testing positive. abc's jordyn phelps was traveling with the president on air force one with hicks, the
7:06 am
day hicks began experiencing symptoms. >> it was striking because at the time she was wearing a mask. it was striking because hope hicks never wears a mask. >> reporter: yet despite close and prolonged contact with hicks, knowing she had been infected, president trump still went ahead with the fund-raiser at his new jersey golf club anyway. the white house dodging questions. >> using marine one in that fund-raiser -- >> white house operations made the assessment it was safe for the president in consultation with others. thank you very much. >> reporter: while new jersey's governor issued this blunt warning to the hundred supporters in attendance. >> self-quarantine, everybody, take yourself off the field. >> reporter: ultimately the president and first lady testing positive and the list of infected people around them growing too. now including the republican party chair and at least three white house journalists, as well as trump campaign manager bill stepien who was with the president for this week's debate. >> i put a mask on. you know, when i think i need it. >> reporter: and now on the white house grounds a new shift.

aides like the press secretary and chief of staff, rarely seen in masks before, now donning them as the president made his way to walter reed. now, we want to repeat, because it is important, vice president mike pence has tested negative. you mention that he led that coronavirus task force call. you know, it's important because if the president's condition worsens, the vice president, of course, could be called on to perform the duties of the president while the president is in the hospital. but the white house is focusing and insisting this morning that that has not happened. eva, they say the president remains fully in charge. there has been no transfer of government. >> and, cecilia, let's go back to the supreme court nominee, the process of that. will this affect that process for amy coney barrett? >> reporter: well, what we do know, eva, is it certainly complicates it. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he wants to move ahead full steam ahead, in fact, but democrats are really trying to delay this now especially given, as we said in our piece,
7:08 am
two members of the senate judiciary committee have tested positive for the virus as a result of being in that rose garden event last saturday. but, you know, the democrats at this point, eva, don't have the votes to block it even though they are trying to delay it at this point. >> cecilia vega for us at walter reed. dan? the president, is as cecilia mentioned, hospitalized just over 31 days before the election. his campaign appearances are now on hold. the two remaining presidential debates up in the air. it is an unprecedented twist in a u.s. presidential election. abc's rachel scott also right there in washington this morning with much more on what's ahead for this unpredictable campaign. rachel, good morning to you. >> reporter: dan, this is truly an unprecedented turn, not only does the president have the virus, but now those two positive infections with the people charged with leading his re-election effort, the chairwoman of the rnc and the president's campaign manager have tested positive too. the state of the race now thrown into turmoil with just one month to go. overnight joe biden wishing the

president and first lady a speedy recovery in an interview with wood tv. >> i genuinely feel badly for the president. i hope to god that this is something that he and his wife will be able to tolerate and get through. >> reporter: returning to the trail after he received two negative coronavirus tests. >> we wanted to make sure that we're doing everything by the numbers and so i got two covid tests this morning. everything is clear. >> reporter: with the final stretch of the campaign now upended, the next set of debates will depend heavily on the president's health. >> i hope for two reasons there are more debates. one means the president is able. he's healthy and able to debate and, secondly, because i'd like to -- i think it's important we make our case. >> reporter: overnight the president's son donald trump jr. leaving future debates up to the medical professional. >> so much depends on when he can get back at it. i imagine 10, 14 days, whatever it may be.
7:10 am
i'll defer to the white house doctors on the details of that. >> reporter: after the president's positive diagnosis, there was an immediate concern about whether his rival, the 77-year-old former vice president, was exposed to the virus. days before the two spent more than 90 minutes sparring on the debate stage. some 13 feet apart without masks at times shouting over each other. >> but you -- >> i just want to make sure -- i want to make sure -- >> reporter: facing off over the president's handling of the pandemic. >> he's been totally irresponsible the way in which he has handled the social distancing and people wearing masks, basically encouraging them not to. >> every time you see him he's got a mask. he could be speaking 200 feet away and shows up with the biggest mask i've ever seen. >> reporter: in the audience dr. jill biden wearing a face covering, while nearly all of the trump family members taking theirs offs violating the rules of the cleveland clinic who hosted the event and refusing to comply when asked by this health worker.
7:11 am
the moderator of that debate now saying they arrived too late to get tested. >> they didn't arrive until tuesday afternoon. so for them to get tested, there wouldn't have been enough time to have the test and have the debate at 9:00 that night. >> reporter: as his rival fights the virus biden pressing forward with in-person events but pulling all negative advertising about trump. in michigan friday biden keeping his mask on for the entirety of his remarks using the president's positive case to send a message. >> this is not a matter of politics. it's a bracing reminder to all of us that we have to take this virus seriously. it's not going away automatically. >> reporter: now, of course, the president's large-scale campaign rallies are on hold but even as biden presses pause on negative ads the trump campaign is moving forward on that front. just 24 hours ago releasing new digital ads taking aim at biden, pushing baseless conspiracy theories about his debate performance. whit? >> rachel scott, thank you so
7:12 am
much. joining us now is our chief medical correspondent, dr. jen ashton. dr. ashton, great to have you on this important and developing story this morning. let's talk about some of these treatments first because the white house says president trump was given a dose of remdesivir, the antiviral drug, as well as an experimental cocktail made by a company called regeneron. this is the antibody treatment. we're going to speak with one of the co-founders of that in just a moment. but give us a breakdown first of what these drugs do and how they could help the president. >> so, whit, first we have to characterize them under the umbrellas of their treatment modalities. so there's an immune therapy and then there's an antiviral therapy. we've heard a lot about remdesivir, but the antibody cocktail made by regeneron given under compassionate use actually uses two types of synthetic antibodies, targets that spike protein and stops the virus from replicating. ironically they just released preliminary data on september
7:13 am
29th. they looked at about 275 patients and they found that it actually lowered the viral load, improved symptoms and some encouraging results. >> and, of course, 275 patients, that's not a wide-scale study. so still learning a lot about that. we know the president has high risk factors when it comes to his age and weight and just the simple fact that he's a man. based on all of that and the treatments that we're learning about, what does that tell us about the severity of his illness? >> well, whit, i think it's really important -- you're hearing a lot of doctors making speculative comments. the only doctors who know specifically how the president's doing is his personal physician and now his medical team at walter reed. but every patient has risk factors. as you said, being a man, twice the mortality risk across every age group compared to women as proven by data pretty early on. obesity, having a body mass index of 30 or greater, three
7:14 am
times higher risk of requiring hospitalization. and then age being 74, five times higher risk of hospitalization. but as we weigh these risk factors clinically in medicine, we still take every patient as an individual. >> i want to ask you about the ripple effect here. we keep hearing about how vice president pence, his wife, some others in the trump family and orbit have tested negative. but based on what we know about the incubation period does this in any way mean they're out of the woods? >> it doesn't, whit, and that's what's really important right now. even though we're nine months into this pandemic, there's still a lot we don't know. we know that the average incubation period from time of exposure is 5.2 days. we also know that in the presymptomatic stage, people can start shedding virus or be contagious 48 hours before the development of symptoms. that brings us around three days. so if you're exposed right now and an hour later you go to get
7:15 am
a test, that could be in that latency period where you get a negative result and you're actually infected. so i asked dr. fauci this question specifically. do we know when the ideal time is? he said we really don't but based on the available data he would say day three, day four, day five. we have to remember every test can have false negatives, as well as false positives. so i would be betting that there will be a lot of testing in the white house circle in the days and weeks to come. >> definitely something to watch in the coming days. dr. ashton, thank you so much. we'll talk to you again in our next hour. eva over to you. joining us is george yancopoulos, president and chief scientific officer of regeneron, that company that makes the experimental treatment given to the president. thank you so much for being with us this morning. >> sure, eva. >> talk to us about this treatment. i know it's still in trials. but what's the data showing you?
7:16 am
how effective is this? >> well, importantly i should tell you this is not some unvalidated approach. we pioneered the technologies to deliver this cocktail over the last 20 years and it has an impressive track record of delivery, some of the world's most important and safest medicines. we actually even use this technology to fight another epidemic, ebola and hopefully later this month it will be the first treatment against ebola ever to be approved by the fda. so this is a tried and true approach. and, as your own dr. jen ashton just described, we just released some preliminary data from our ongoing trial, but the data was quite convincing that we had true antiviral activity in patients who had the highest viral levels who were at the most danger. we showed that we could reduce
7:17 am
the virus levels by about 99% in just a few days and obviously because it's this race between the virus and your own immune system, anything that can help your immune system lower the viral levels helps you win that race, helps you beat this virus. >> so a lot of people are curious. how did this treatment reach the president? did the fda sign off on it? >> yeah. there is a standard approach. it's called the compassionate use approach. it's intended to deliver experimental medicines that have some evidence but have not been approved to patients who are in high need and need them. this mechanism has been in place for decades. we've actually been asked before. this has to be initiated by the patient's physician, in this case, the doctor -- the president's team of doctors, they have to initiate the process. they have to get approval from the fda for this.
7:18 am
and then they had to work with us so that we could deliver the medicine to the white house. >> and real quickly, yes or no question, is the first lady taking this as well? >> you know, we can't comment on anything that hasn't been described publicly or announced publicly by the white house. all we can do is confirm that we did deliver the medicine to the white house and as the white house has said, the president received this treatment. >> well, we appreciate -- >> i should mention that small numbers of other individuals, their doctors have requested this cocktail before and we've delivered it in a similar manner, but this is not a mechanism that's intended to widely distribute this drug to lots of people. >> george yancopoulos, we appreciate your time this morning. thank you so much. dan? let's switch it up and check the weather. rob marciano out in connecticut this morning. but, rob, we're hearing about more activity in the tropics. >> reporter: it's october and we often get a second peak. good morning. we have another tropical storm in the western caribbean that

yesterday when we saw president trump leave the residence of the white house to board marine one. he was wearing that mask. we know now he's experiencing as you said mild symptoms and has a fever, a cough, fatigue, chill. of course, he is being monitored at walter reed by some of the best experts in the world. he received that dose of remdesivir. that's the drug that is supposed to help shorten a hospital stay and doing that experimental antibody cocktail. he tweeted overnight that things are going well. but, you know, the big question right now, guys, is whether that rose garden event where he announced his supreme court pick last saturday ended up being a super spreader event? seven people we now know who were in attendance at that event since confirmed positive including his former adviser, his top aide, kellyanne conway. she says she's experiencing mild symptoms but in addition to that two republican senators, one from north carolina, thom tillis and utah's mike lee. in addition to that, guys, we're also seeing the number of people in the president's inner circle grow who have now tested positive. you'll remember hope hicks, we're now learning that the campaign manager has tested

positive. also the head of the republican party, she has tested positive. guys, this could potentially be a devastating blow as we are just 31 days out from the election. >> timing is incredible. cecelia, thank you so much. to be clear, we don't know yet exactly when president trump was infected with the coronavirus. according to the associated press, white house officials said trump had boarded marine one for a trip to new jersey for an event there before they heard that his close aide hope hicks, had tested positive. the event in bedminster went ahead. among those attending, the comedian joe piscopo. >> this event had bedminster was meticulous. everything the president does it runs like clockwork. the security was like clockwork. everybody got tested and there were masks and adhering to the cdc guidelines. i'm a germophobe and i worry about everything and the president is more of a germophobe than i am.

7:34 am
>> i'm glad to hear the results are negative. you know, the former governor of new jersey, our colleague here at abc news, chris christie, was with the president for days helping him to prepare for the debate. he told us the white house didn't contact him either and he also found out through the news reports what was going on. to you does this speak to some weakness in the white house procedures? >> well, i think we have to understand how this is all being tracked obviously and where this came from. i hear a lot of talk about the rose garden ceremony for amy coney barrett. i was at that event on saturday. again, i was tested prior when i walked into the white house complex prior to sitting in the rose garden. but we're also hearing that bill stepien and the campaign manager and head of the republican party have contracted the virus and neither one of them were at the rose garden. so, look, i don't think it's as simple as one event and i'm not sure in the testing protocols.
7:35 am
if you test negative on a wednesday, but then you start with your symptoms later in the day and then test positive on thursday, how that occurs. i'm not a physician or someone who runs these tests, but, you know we have to look at that i think to understand. if hope hicks was feeling ill on wednesday coming back from minnesota, but provided a negative test earlier in the day, how do we know when that begins to grow and begins to manifest itself? >> the president as you know has been criticized for not wearing a mask and talking down, people who do for holding indoor rallies where there isn't a lot of social distancing and for playing down the seriousness of this pandemic. do you expect now that he's been tested positive for covid-19 that his tone and all of the white house protocols that you and i have been discussing might change? >> you know, i think the white house, just to be clear, i don't work for the white house but i think they'll look at all of those protocols to make sure people who are working there are doing their very best to keep the president and the first family safe. obviously our thoughts and
