statements about his condition. abc news reporter reena roy has this developing story. >> reporter: in a surprise move tonight, the president leaving walter reed medical center in the midst of battling covid-19 to wave hello to supporters. posting this video on twitter moments before. >> i also think we're going to pay a little surprise to some of the great patriots that we have out on the street. >> reporter: a senior administration official tells abc news he then went back to the military hospital. seven months into the pandemic, president trump saying he's now learned a lot about the virus. >> and i get it, and i understand it, and it's a very interesting thing. and i'm going to be letting you know about it. >> reporter: tonight abc news is learning from multiple sources familiar with the matter that president trump had already tested positive with a rapid test before phoning in to sean hannity's show on fox news thursday evening. at that time only revealing that top aide hope hicks had

contracted the virus. >> i just heard about this. she tested positive. >> reporter: those sources saying he was waiting to reveal his results from a more accurate pcr test. meantime, his medical team insisting he's doing well with no fever since friday morning as he receives doses of the experimental drug remdesivir and a steroid, dexamethasone. >> this is the only drug that has been shown to have a survival benefit in clinical trials, but it also indicates that the president's disease is not considered mild. >> reporter: the american people getting mixed messages about the president's condition. saturday his leading physician, dr. sean conley, appearing to dodge questions over whether the president received any supplemental oxygen. today he said this. >> the president has experienced two episodes of transient drops in his oxygen saturation. i recommended the president we try to supplemental oxygen. >> reporter: dr. conley says that happened friday, but when asked if the president was also on oxygen saturday, he couldn't

seem to recall and was then pressed about his discrepancies. >> i was trying to reflect the upbeat attitude that the team, the president, that his course of illness has had. it came off that we were trying to hide something, which wasn't necessarily true. >> reporter: adding to the confusion, white house chief of staff mark meadows warned trump's vitals, quote, over the last 24 hours were very concerning, cautioning the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care, contradicting what his doctors have said. dr. conley saying meadows' comments were misconstrued. reena roy, abc news, washington. >> at least eight people who attended last saturday's rose garden ceremony for president trump's supreme court nominee have been infected. the latest to test positive, the president's personal assistant and bodyman nick luna. former new jersey governor chris christie announced yesterday he tested positive while mr. trump's former adviser, kellyanne conway, released her diagnosis on friday.

now, dr. peter chin-hong says normally doctors or medical personnel wear layers of ppe when interacting with a covid-positive patient. in this case, we saw the president wearing a face mask and those around him as well, but the risk is still there. >> that's right, dion. dr. chin-hong says he wouldn't have allowed for the president to leave the hospital. he says that risk of him being contagious for the people around him is still there. >> i'm not telling anybody but you, but i'm about to make apr h to infect others around him. that's how ucsf's infectious disease specialist dr. peter chin-hong categorized this exposure. >> we would have never allowed a patient to leave the hospital, expose others unnecessarily. >> the same concern was raised by a medical doctor at walter reed national military medical center, where president trump is

typically steroids are used with severe covid-19 cases. in this case, the president got it on day two. >> so the fact that they started it on his second day in the hospital means that they must have been quite worried about him. >> now, according to the president's doctors, his condition continues to improve, but dr. peter chin-hong says that doesn't take away from the fact that he remains highly contagious. the first days of a patient with covid are some of the most infectious. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc7 news. >> luz, much appreciated. now, new covid-19 spikes are causing reopening rollbacks in the u.s. and overseas. johns hopkins university reported more than 54,000 positive cases friday. that is america's highest single-day total since mid-august. new york city's mayor wants businesses to shut down in nine zip codes across brooklyn and queens amid outbreaks there and in paris, all bars will shut down tuesday as the city's coronavirus alert is raised to maximum.

and in san francisco, officials are discouraging trick-or-treating this halloween, suggesting virtual costume parties instead. in the north bay, some students are getting ready to go back to class. for the first time since march, four public school districts in marin are reopening for in-person learning. schools in larkspur, corte made madera, and kentfield will all reopen tomorrow. teachers say they are excited to welcome back students and are decorating hallways with balloons. they say they want to make it comfortable and fun and to show the kids how much they've missed them. developing news on the glass fire burning in napa and sonoma counties now. cal fire says the cause remains under investigation as the fire closes in on 65,000 acres burned. it is now 26% contained, but tonight an estimated 22,000 buildings are still threatened, and even some evacuees who have been able to return home admit it's hard to rest easy. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone

look at possibly abbreviating the schedule down to 14 games. but i do believe bubbling in the playoffs is a reality. >> reporter: sunday's scheduled new england patriots game against the kansas city chiefs moved to monday following positive covid tests on both teams, including quarterback cam newton. the patriots saying in a statement that other players and staff who have been in close contact with newton received point of care tests this morning, and all were negative for covid-19. this just days after the pittsburgh steelers game against the tennessee titans was rescheduled for october 25th after an outbreak within the titans organize. the associated press reported at least 20 people testing positive, about half of them players. and new orleans saints fullback michael burton now cleared after what's believed to have been a false positive test saturday. >> they basically have to coexist with something that has been utterly predictable, which is that covid would impact the league as the season wore on. >> reporter: the nfl is doing

will be light in nature because we don't want heavy rain to fall on our burn scars quite yet. just enough rain to help extinguish the current fires we have burning across northern california. but today it was all about that improving air quality. note that the sky was bluer, less smoke in your sky. that's going to continue in the near term thanks to an onshore breeze. current air kwauquality in the h bay is good to moderate air quality. a similar setup around the bay shoreline from san francisco, oakland, fremont, san jose,ven la moderate. we do expect mainly these conditions over the next 48 hours. we have fog right now from our sutro tower camera. a live look this evening over the city of san francisco. we will track the marine layer expanding tonight. that's going to help keep some fresh air in place. we do have a spare the air day in effect tomorrow and tuesday, and it's really for impacted communities in the north bay close to the glass fire. that's where we expect the worst

air quality over the next two days, poor in fact. but outside of the north bay, looks like that onshore breeze will help to keep our air quality between good and moderate at least through tuesday. live doppler 7 along with satellite, you can see that fog bumped up right along the immediate coastline. it is locally dense in spots. we'll switch over live doppler 7 to visibility mode, and you can see half moon bay right up along the coast, that fog is dense, down to a half mile visibility and likely some coastal drizzle as well. first thing tomorrow morning we'll find those locally dense areas of fog close to the coast. we're down to 54 in half moon bay. 62 in cloverdale. 65 in concord. 71 in brentwood. 60 in hayward. 58 that current temperature in palo alto. overnight tonight we are tracking that fog moving over the city right now, and spilling into the bay shoreline. patchy fog for many communities close to the water like oakland, san mateo, even richmond. low to mid-50s tonight. a little bit cooler tonight compared to last night. here's future weather showing you that fog first thing in the

president trump briefly left walter reed medical center today in the battling covid-19. he greets supporters from his motorcade. a senior administration official says the president returned to the hospital to continue treatment and could be released as soon as tomorrow. a senior adviser to the trump campaign is defending the president's actions before he was diagnosed. >> this is the whole point, that you can have every safeguard in place. there are so many things we don't know about this virus. you can everything in place and still contract it. so the whole point is we have to 'ty locd u ove his virus. >> jason miller was repeatedly challenged during the interview about the president's lax attitude towards masks and holding campaign rallies without social distancing. miller said masks are handed out at events and people at the rallies are asked to socially distance. developing news now, the president's covid diagnosis has upended the presidential campaigns. abc news reporter andrew dymburt has a look at how those

at least 21 states have seen a week to week increase in new covid-19 cases. here in california, cases those are holding steady. cnn correspondent polo sandoval has a look now at what the nation can expect in the coming months. >> reporter: only three u.s. states are reporting a decline in new covid-19 cases compared to last week. as of saturday night, new cases were down in texas, missouri, and south carolina while 21 states reported a rise in cases and a little more than half held steady compared with the week before. researchers at the university of washington are now predicting as many as 2,900 deaths a day in december. >> the reason we think that's going to happen is the combination of people, you know, taking their foot off the brake and starting to mingle more, being less careful, and then most importantly, seasonality. >> reporter: wisconsin reported a record number of 2,892 new

covid-19 cases on saturday, including 19 deaths. governor tony evers said on social media the surges seen across the state were not an indication that masks don't work. meantime, california has now passed 16,000 deaths. in illinois, the state reported nearly 2,500 cases in 24 hours and 31 deaths. in tennessee, 1,192 cases and 45 deaths. in south carolina, 649 new cases and 31 deaths on saturday. the university of washington now projecting 363,000 u.s. deaths by the end of the year. >> you know, given what we know about the effectiveness of masks and given what we know about half of americans wearing a mask when they're out, we think that about 86,000 lives can be saved if we can get mask use way up. so it's very much in our control as to what's actually going to

a san francisco institution that serves people in need is celebrating a milestone today. the st. anthony's foundation marks 70 years of service today much the social service organization has been providing care and compassion to those experiencing homelessness and those who face other challenges. mayor london breed even declared today st. anthony's day in the city. toy maker mattel is paying tribute to feminists with its brand-new barbie. the susan b. anthony doll will be released tomorrow. it's part of the unspiring women line. mattel worked with the susan b. anthony museum to design the barbie. anthony is one of america's best known sufficient ra gists. although she died 14 years before women won the right to vote. the doll celebrates her 200th birthday and marks a century since the 19th amendment. one last check of weather with drew and the impending changes in the forecast. >> yeah. we're going to find first that our temperatures really drop

o northern esday and then t california. tonight it's all about the fog moving through san francisco and the air quality certainly going to depend on where you live tomorrow. you can see a wide range. the north bay will have the poorest air quality, close to the glass fire where it is burning. outside the north bay we'll mainly find good to moderate air quality the next two days. tonight some fog rolling in from the coast going around the bay shoreline. low to mid-50s in the overnight hours. tomorrow we're going to have a wide range in temperatures. have an onshore breeze which will keep the coast cool but it still remains pretty hot inland. 93 in antioch. 90 in concord. 84 in san jose. 76 oakland. 67 in the city. 86 the high in santa rosa. we'll fast forward the clock to friday, and that is when we are tracking late friday the chance of some wet weather returning to northern california and that chance continues into saturday morning with a cold front that is moving ohe west coast.

lead. >> i think we realize we belong. they can be beat as long as we do what we're supposed to do. come the next game, i know they're going to be so much better and we got to be able to match that energy. tonight was game three of the nba finals. we also had another special guest. warriors assistant coach bruce frazier, who is stephen curry's go-to guy. he just wrapped up his time in the warriors double. after two weeks, here's his assessment. >> i thought jordan pool was really, really good. he's a really, i would say maybe a prolific shooter. his shot is maturing physically and mentally, so he's gotten stronger. and he moves well. i think he could potentially really helpus. then kay von looney, who i may not consider young, but still on his way up was solid and probably as healthy as he's been. then klay, we had klay, which was great. klay really looked good.
