>> now the white house is facing criticism for a lack of transparency and conflicti new outrage over president trump's drive past supporters amid his battle with coronavirus. >> i think we'll pay a little surprise to some of the great patriots out on the street. >> reporter: doctors are now condemning this drive-by appearance outside walter reed medical center calling it a dangerous publicity statement under oath. among the critics a physician at walter reed saying this is insanity. tweeting that everyone in the car has to be quarantined for 14 days. they might get sick. they may die. the white house saying appropriate precautions were taken including ppe. the movement was cleared by the medical team as safe to do. the cdc says hospitalized covid-19 patients should only leave their room for medically essential purposes. as the president seeks to project an image of strength, americans are being offered a puzzling and grim picture of the president's health.

on saturday white house doctors denied the president needed oxygen. >> yesterday and today he was not on oxygen. >> reporter: from trump's chief of staff mark meadows a more serious statement on the president's condition. >> he had a fever and a blood oxygen level had dropped rapidly. >> reporter: trump's physician dr. sean conley revealed the president required supplemental oxygen twice. >> i recommended we try some supplemental oxygen, see how he would respond. >> reporter: dr. conley also denied accusations he was purposely misleading the public. >> i was trying to reflect the upbeat attitude the president the team, his course of illness has had. didn't want to give any information that might steer the course of illness in another direction. >> reporter: abc news learned the president had a high fever as recently as friday and his oxygen level dipped below safe levels to at least 93%.

>> i was concerned about rapid progression of the illness. >> reporter: we know doctors at both the white house and walter reed have given him an experimental anti-viral cocktail meant to reduce virus levels in the blood, at least two doses of remdesivir and a course of dexamethasone a steroid prescribed to hospitalized patients who need extra oxygen. the white house released this picture of the president on a conference call with vice president mike pence and secretary of state mike pompeo ahead of a possible discharge later today. despite the fact that we've been in a global pandemic for seven months, trump said after two days in the hospital he learned a lot about the virus. >> i get it. i understand it. it's a very interesting thing. i'll be letting you know about it. >> nearly three days after the president announced his diagnosis white house staffers received guidance on what to do if they had symptoms. in an email obtained by "new york magazine" they were instructed to stay away from the white house, self-isolate and work from home.

>> the list of covid-19 cases apparently linked to the white house is growing. in addition to first lady melania trump and hope hicks, the president's campaign manager and personal assistant have also tested positive. two of the three republican senators recently diagnosed with the virus attended the supreme court announcement for judge amy coney barrett. also testing positive, the president of notre dame, former trump adviser kellyanne conway, and former new jersey governor chris christie who checked himself into the hospital. >> the president's diagnosis is shaking up the race for the white house. former vice president joe biden has again tested negative and is looking forward to debate number two with president trump. it's still too early to tell if and when that will happen. the supreme court is opening a new term today with eight justices. even with several senators now infected, republicans are vowing to stick to their schedule to fill that vacant seat. more now from presha. >> reporter: this morning

president trump's coronavirus diagnosis upending the strategy for both campaigns. large in person rallies with the president have been put on hold. over the weekend his campaign launched a trump re-election bus tour with top surrogates gathering indoors, few wearing masks. a new abc news/ipsos poll shows that nearly three out of four americans say the president didn't take the risk of getting covid serious enough. >> we take it very seriously. we give everyone that comes to rallies a mask. we check their temperatures. >> reporter: joe biden has pulled negative ads about the president following the news of his covid diagnosis and is promising to release the results of every covid-19 test he takes. >> the coronavirus has taken over every aspect of american life. americans are worried. they look to joe biden and see leadership. >> reporter: it's unclear if the second presidential debate, a

town hall format set for october 15th in miami will go on as planned. in the meantime, senate democrats are pressing to postpone next week's hearings for judge amy coney barrett insisting the hearings put senators and staff in danger. three republican senators have announced positive coronavirus diagnoses. three more gop senators say they will quarantine after potential coronavirus exposure. while the hearings will be done remotely under senate rules law makers must be present to approve the nomination. >> there's no reason on god's green earth why these shouldn't be delayed other than an effort to rush a witness through in an inadequate hearing. people can't even see the witness face-to-face. >> there's not going to be a delay. we're moving forward with the hearings monday. chuck schumer is committed to do everything he can to block, stop, derail this nomination. >> reporter: senator kamala the de ve idtiuely positioned as nominee and as a member of the senate judiciary committee. the biden campaign hasn't commented on how she'll split time between the senate hearings

and campaign trail. kenneth and mona? >> alex, thank you. developing here in new york, one person was killed and two others injured when a sea plane crashed into a pier in queens. witnesses said the plane bounced on the water at least twice before striking the pier at high speed. no one on the ground was injured. federal officials are looking into the cause of the incident. now to record-breaking wildfires devastating california. those flames scorching more than 4 million acres. that's double the previous record set in 2018. firefighters are battling 20 major fires with about two months remaining in the fire season. 31 people have died this year. tropical storm gamma is stalled over the yucatan peninsula of mexico. it's expected to crawl along mexico's coast dumping more heavy rain before making a turn to the north. at least six people died as the storm battered the region with near hurricane-force winds, fallen trees, black-outs and flooding have been reported.

back now with a terrifying house explosion caught on camera in eastern iowa. authorities say the blast was caused by contractors hitting a gas line. the home was empty when the blast hit. no other serious injuries were reported but several nearby homes were damaged. new york city could close schools and businesses in nine neighborhoods after a surge in coronavirus cases. those areas in brooklyn and queens have seen a 3% testing positivity for seven consecutive days. this could happen as soon as wednesday if the governor approves the plan. it's a major setback for the city which has taken several steps to re-open. there are two monday night football games tonight because of coronavirus. the patriots game in kansas city was delayed one day because quarterback cam newton tested positive. the diagnosis has teams, fans and club officials concerned about what may come next with the virus.

here's abc's faith abubey. >> reporter: this morning the nfl on defense after coronavirus took down one of the league's top players. >> newton takes it in for the touchdown. >> reporter: patriots quarterback cam newton out of the game after testing positive for covid-19 this weekend. breaking his silence on instagram sunday saying, quote, i'll take this time to get healthy and self-reflect. >> there are other teams around the league that worry that if the quarterback gets sick, he's a spreader to everybody else. >> reporter: the league now saying the outbreak is contained and there are no new positive tests after newton and one kansas city player tested positive. sunday's patriots/chiefs game was rescheduled and will be played tonight. this scare is just the latest in a series of outbreaks that have sidelined dozens of players less than a month into the season. at least 20 people with the tennessee titans also have the virus. >> testing was never going to be enough to prevent cases from spreading across teams. >> reporter: the outbreak is raising new questions this

is reeling after the death of a beloved elementary school teacher from covid-19. julie davis died sunday morning after being hospitalized. parents say they learned about her diagnosis and death in a facebook post. >> they should have contacted us the day of instead of us having to find out over facebook. >> instead of waiting, you know, a day later and found out on facebook, not a phone call, anything. any other time i would have got a phone call. >> davis taught third graders at norwood elementary school for two years. marijuana may be helpful against one of the most common complications for people battling covid-19. researchers from the university of south carolina say thc, the chemical found in cannabis, could help prevent a harmful immune response that causes a potentially deadly respiratory condition. but so far it's only been tested on mice. back to president trump's hospitalization for the coronavirus. earlier i spoke with dr. darian sutton. i asked him about the treatments president trump is receiving. but we started with that

controversial drive-by. let's start with the president's drive outside the hospital grounds. cdc guidelines say that transporting a patient outside his or her room should be limited to medical essential purposes. was this drive okay? is the president still contagious? >> so the president is still infectious and contagious. from what we know about covid-19, viral loads and infectiousness remain high in the first days after initial infection. these presidential suvs are air tight to prevent chemical attacks. and the president stepping inside of one of them increases risk of transmission, exposure and infection to others. so this trip around walter reed was not only unnecessary, but quite frankly it was dangerous. >> the white house refuses to say when president trump last tested negative for the coronavirus. why is it important to know that? >> the cdc states that an individual should remain in isolation for ten days after their last positive test. so if we knew, if we publicly knew about these test results, we can hold the president and the staff accountable for following these cdc guidelines. >> trump has received

supplemeal oxygen at least two times so far on friday and saturday. he received an experimental antibody cocktail on friday. he's midway through a five-day course of the antiviral drug remdesivir and he's been given the powerful steroid dexamethasone. what does all this say to you about the severity of his illness? >> i can't speak to the specifics of the president's treatment or care, but i can say that medications like remdesivir and dexamethasone are mainly for patients who have moderate to severe symptoms of covid-19, and the president's purported oxygen saturation, as well as his need for supplemental oxygen, put him in those risk categories. >> the president's doctor says he may be discharged as soon as today. what do you make of that? >> progress is truly day by day. but i also know that the white house has medical facilities, so i would not see a discharge from walter reed as an end of care but rather a de-escalation of care. >> our thanks to dr. sutton there. coming up, the 75-year-old singer who is in talks to pose for "playboy." also ahead the perfume that's truly out of this world.
