at ucsf is saying about that ride and how the president is doing now. >> good morning, kumasi. we're seeing from the president's twitter that he is up this morning, also hearing from white house chief of staff mark meadows as you mentioned that that game time decision about whether or not the president will be released from walter reed heading back to the white house will be later today. he appears to be up from his tweets this morning. his doctors have told us though he appears to be on the mend that does not mean he's out of the woods yet. the president is on a cocktail of drugs including remdesivir, antibodies to the virus and steroids. he appeared to be off of oxygen from the video of president trump you're seeing here leaving walter reed medical center to ride in the presidential motorcade and wave to supporters. that video raising questions about how serious the president is taking his diagnosis. we spoke to ucsf's infectious disease specialist who said it

was not a great idea for the president at the peak of being contagious to exit the hospital and put others at risk of exposure specifically thoseseet in that air tight motorcade against him. the suv is bullet proof and it puts everyone at unnecessary risk inside the car not to mention people he might have interacted with on the way to his car. >> according to the president's doctors, his condition continues to improve. and it appears he is in good spirits, several doctors including that infectious disease special lift said the next seven to ten days will be critical in monitoring the president's conditions, it looks like we might be able to hear in the coming hours if the president, in fact, will be released from walter reed. reporting live this morning,

julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you. this morning we are also hearing from a physician at walter reed hospital. he has raised concerns about the president's drive-by saying that he may have unnecessarily exposed secret service members to the virus. dr. james phillips is not part of the president's care team but he has treated covid-19 patients. this morning on "gma" he said he's concerned that his colleagues at walter reed may have been pressured into allowing the drive-by. >> so far as the military and johns hopkins physicians who are taking care of this patient, they're excellent. but they are also under undue pressure and a lot of influence outside of that normal physician/patient relationship. >> you can watch this entire interview with dr. phillips. that's coming up on "gma" which starts at 7:00 after abc7 mornings. we will take a closer look at how the president's diagnosis is affecting the election less

than a month away and what the biden campaign is doing in response. we expect to hear from governor newsom today. he's holding a press conference at noon to update the public on the covid-19 pandemic as well as the wildfire situation. here's the interesting thing. the governor's office says he has a special announcement to make today. you can watch that live right here on abc7 news. we'll also be streaming it on our news app and at abc7news.com. also today, the two-week pause on the state's unemployment payments is over. you can now start applying with the edd office again. the department temporarily shut down to reset its unemployment log and better weed out false or fraudulent claims. the state says there's now a new identity verification system when you go to apply. the edd office estimates since march a total of 93$93.8 billio has been paid out to workers. the gss fire still burning ws in napa and sonoma counties. the cause of the fire is under

diagnosis has certainly upended the campaign trail. jobina fortson is at the live desk with the details on how. jobina? >> thank you. kumasi. president trump won't be able to hold rallies while he's recovering from covid-19 and it's unclear what will happen once he's released from walter reed hospital which could happen as early as today. in the meantime, democratic presidential nominee joe biden has changed his tone. biden pulled negative ads about the president and toned down his attacks. >> i don't want to be attacking the president and first lady now because they're now the -- have contracted coronavirus. >> biden is expected to attend campaign events in miami today. he tested negative for covie-19 and his campaign has promised to release the results of every covid-19 test he takes.

the vice presidential debate between kamala harris and mike pence is still on for wednesday. they both tested negative for covid-19 and also sources tell abc news they will be sitting about 12 feet apart. reggie? >> jobina, thank you. a memorial set up outside the white house over the weekend mourns the 200,000 lives lost to covid-19 as president trump himself remains in the hospital with the virus. 20,000 chairs, each representing 10 americans killed by coronavirus were lined up along the ellipsis. the covid survivors for change a network aimed at helping those affected by the virus declared sunday a national day of remembrance. in the north bay some students are getting ready to go back to class for the first time since march. it's going to be four public school districts in marin reopening for in-person learning today. that includes schools in larksp larkspur, cortinas, reed union, miller creek and kemp field. teachers say they're so excited to welcome back students and

they're even decorating the hallways with balloons. they say they want to make it comfortable, fun and show kids how much they missed them. this is a fun video. it's a dog from phoenix who has trouble seeing through the front yard because his little sister dog won't let him do it. she's always barking at him. he found another way to do it. he just jumps up high. neighbors walking past one day noticed this and started taking video of it. they assumed this dog was on some kind of trampoline because how could a dog get that much air? well, as you can see, he's a really good jumper. >> we just see him pop up every now and then. we're amazed. >> we thought for sure he was jumping on a trampoline. >> he just wanted to see people walk by. >> max's owner says their jumping dog has become somewhat of a local celebrity since they adopted him a couple years ago. >> can't they just let him out? get him something to prop up there? a little window? can they get him a window?

>> plexiglass or something. >> help this dog. >> one day he will clear it. >> that's true. it's coming. >> then it's over. new at 6:00, for the first time in roughly 3,000 years, tasmanian devils are running around mainland australia. and none other than chris hemsworth who plays thor in the avengers is helping to revive the population. look at them. okay. so hemsworth and his wife released a small group of as it main y tasmanian devils into a wildlife sanctuary. they did not exactly just run out. looks like they took their sweet time. it is estimated that fewer than 25,000 tasmanian devils still live in the wild. on australia's mainland they have believed to have been first cleared out by several packs of dingos.

we need to find that man and interview him. any way, good morning. it is monday, october 5th. see ve i ge this is mt. tam, you can see a thin layer of thick cloud cover out there. the fog is reducing visibility to a quarter mile in some places as we've been moving through the morning hours. that will continue to be the case as we head into the rest of the morning commute. it's clean air out there so far. long at these visibilities down to hayward, three quarters of a mile. please slow down and use the low beeps. i'm sure jobina will talk more about that. summer spread today from near 70 in san francisco to mid 90s in the east bay valleys. a couple more days of this before autumn arrives. signs of progress for neighbors in the north bay already put through so much this fire season. fire officials are allowing some of them to return home after they had to run from the glass

fire. this is a good indicator that firefighters are gaining some control as now 26% contained, approaching 65,000 acres burned in napa and sonoma counties. this morning evacuees who are returning home say it's hard to rest easy. amy hollyfield is live for us in santa rosa this morning. amy? >> yeah. people in this oakmont neighborhood were cleared to sleep in their own beds last night. this neighborhood here in santa rosa in sonoma county had its evacuation orders lifted yesterday. in napa county people were allowed to return to their homes in sal stowing gcalistoga. residents say it's not easy to relax in their homes after all they've been through. >> we feel like we're always sort of prepared for the worst. every night before we go to bed, open the window so we can smell smoke or hear sirens.

morning that a decision on whether or not the president will be discharged from the hospital will come later today. the president's doctors have said they're optimistic it could happen today, but have not made -- or have made -- there have been mixed messages about the president's health. on saturday presidential doctor sean connelly dodged questions about whether the president needed oxygen. he later admitted that he administered oxygen twice. there's questions about when and how the president caught covid-19. the rose garden announcement of his supreme court pick may have been a super spreader event. so far none of the people in attendance have tested positive. some people on the debate prep team have also tested positive for covid-19. president trump's attorney, rudy giuliani, spoke this morning on "gma." he says he's been tested for covid-19 several times since the president's diagnosis and he may get tested again today. his latest test result from

story of the morning, yeah, this. those photos are good. it's all about the photos. >> this is getting so ridiculous. we'll get to that. hi, mike. >> was that a filter he was using or all natural? that's what i want to know. all right. let's talk about current conditions. the critical fire conditions are just about over. we lost the winds for the most part. it's still very warm and dry up in the mountains around the glass fire. 73 degrees. 33% relative humidity. winds are less than 20 miles per hour. that's the way they're going to stay in the mountains. in fact, look at this. the next two days, today and tomorrow in the mid 80s with relative humidity possibly spiking at 30%. look at friday and saturday with that slight chance of rain. temperatures in the 60s and relative humidity around 70% to 80%. much better conditions to get

those fires to lay down over the weekend. look at that fog along the east bay with temperatures in the low to mid 50s until you get to oakland at 58 degrees. 40s across the north bay with some of the thickest fog. the rest of us in the 50s. look at this, san mateo bridge socked in by fog. be careful. it's getting more widespread. it will continue to do that for a couple more hours. so the entire morning commute is going to get foggier except in the east bay valleys where it's a little clear right now. so, as far as your commute goes, that's what we're dealing with this morning. let's talk to jobina and find out how those driving conditions are panning out on the roads. hi, jobina. how are you this monday morning? >> hi, mike. i'm doing well this monday morning. thank you. unfortunately some people are having to deal with a couple crashes out there and the low visibility that you just showed us. so we'll bring in the maps first. want to look at a new crash we're following in hayward. so, as we zoom in here, we can

get this pulled up for everybody, will you see on southbound 880 just before the tennyson on-ramp, a vehicle accident involving multiple cars. in san francisco, a crash involving two rollovers. this is northbound 280 at the monterey boulevard on-ramp. multiple injuries reported there. speeds are around 11 miles per hour. we have a live camera from caltrans showing this area. i believe we can see that backup and those flashing lights in the area. speeds down to around 11 miles per hour, you should expect delays in this area. looking at other live cameras, starting with the toll plaza. metering lights came on at 5:28. much better looking there as far as the backup. also on 880 in oakland right now, this is our 880 at the coliseum camera there. just getting a feel for what people can expect on the roadways. not a ton of slowdowns but
