you'll notice is clouds are much more widespread covering more neighborhoods and getting thick along the coast and up into the north bay valleys. watch out for that during the morning commute. temperatures are in the 50s at 7:00. we'll stay in the 50s at the coast. 65 to 74 at noon with low sunshine and only 70 to 80 at 4:00. a little touch of fall in the forecast and more of it on the way with a slight chance of rain coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. >> thank you. it is your voice your vote. tonight the american people will witness a highly anticipated showdown between vice president mike pence and his democratic rival, senator kamala harris. the and this comes as president trump continues to be treated for covid-19. jobina fortson is at the live desk with the extra safety measures in place. jobina? >> yes. this will be the only debate between the candidates for vice president and here are just some of the safety measures both

candidates have agreed to. so this morning we're learning that the candidates will stand 12 feet apart between a plexiglass barrier. senator harris requested the plexiglass. the vice president agreed to it though his team says they do not believe it's necessary. we're told anyone without a mask will be escorted out of the building. here's a live look at the debate hall at the university of utah in salt lake city. dmc chair tom perez explains why they're adamant about enforcing the rules. >> what we saw in cleveland was the trump campaign recklessly disregarded the rules that were set forth that they agreed to. we were sitting in the debate hall with masks on. there wasn't one trump official with a mask on. you're putting people in harm's way. >> both pence and harris have been getting tested for coronavirus regularly. the latest results show both are negative. you can watch the debate between vice president mike pence and

senator kamala harris at 6:00 right here on abc7. developing news, the covid-19 outbreak continues to spread at the white house. as of this morning at least 24 people who have been at the white house in recent weeks have tested positive. the latest man is top aide to the president, steven miller. he is now self-isolating. president trump is still getting treated for covid-19 after he was discharged from walter reed medical center on monday. his doctor says his vitals are stable. president trump says he is open to restarting the negotiations on a second coronavirus relief package. on twitter late last night he said he will sign a bill that sends out another round of $1,200 checks. earlier in the day he said he was calling off the talks until after the election and that caused the stock market to tank. this morning students in several bay area school districts are getting ready for another day of in-person

learning. top state health officials say they are not seeing increased signs of spread of coronavirus. education is one area we're focused on as we work to building a better bay area during this pandemic. amy hollyfield has more on this. >> this is good news for the schools. there are ten schools in the east bay that have opened. some opened about a month ago. there are schools around the bay area that have been opened. in the north bay, larkspur opened this week, in the south bay, sunnyvale reopened. they are not seeing problems from these openings. the state's top health official say they are constantly looking at the data, checking to see if there is a connection between cases and schools reopening, and they have not found one. >> but so far it's encouraging to see the tremendous effort and

louisiana coast once again as we head into thursday and friday. something to keep an eye on. a seventh landfalling tropical system in the gulf this system. back here at home, low to mid 50s. watch out for the fog this morning. the possibility of drizzle along the coast. temperatures are coolest in the north bay. 45 in napa, 60 in san ramon. as we look at your activity planner today, watch out for the air quality no matter if you're working from home, remote learning or headin outside for activities. we have the north bay poor, that means it's for the sensitive groups. that's going to continue through at least thursday. most of us should be fine. a lot of this smoke will be elevated as the marine layer has increased up to about 1,200 feet. some of it could slip down to the neighborhoods. we'll keep an eye on that. you can, too, with our app and

nurses at alameda hospital and san leandro hospital will begin a five-day unfair labor practices strike. they'll start picketing at 7:00. the california nurses association says the nurses have concerns over patient safety during the covid-19 pandemic. hospital officials say quality care will continue during the strike. we're hearing incredible stories of survival from the glass fire including two newlyweds from st. helena. 100-year-old howard and his new bride, joanne, they evacuated with their two dogs. they took with them howard's priceless war medals from his career as a u.s. army air corps captain during world war ii. howard and joanne met two years ago when he hired her to compile a book about his military career. they eventually tied the knot but sadly their home burned in the class fire. >> the important thing is we have each other. the important thing is i have

microorganisms with extremely high precision with the promise of one day curing inherited diseases and even cancer. doudna is sharing the prize with emmanuelle charpentier. ucfs is working on a new test kit that can diagnose infection in less than an hour by using gene targeting technology. it's also been controversial. a couple years ago a chinese scientist said he used the technology to make the world's first edited babies. prince harry was spotted wearing a mask made by a black-owned business in oakland. this picture shows the prince with some runners in los angeles and he was wearing the company's champagne and honey face cover mask. i profiled this oakland clothing store last month. taylor j. talked about how she signed a lease for this space before covid hit and had to

70s in the south bay and the north bay, just a few 80s holding on in the inland east bay neighborhoods. reggie? >> thank you. as california reopens its economy, state health officials are implementing a new health equity requirement. the goal is to bring down covid-19 rates in disadvantaged communities that are being hardest hit during the pandemic. abc7 news reporter julian glover has reaction leaders in one county that is failing. >> yes. this new equity metric or equity requirement added to the state's reopening framework as a way to incentivize dedicating more resources to help the communities most impacted by covid-19. but this could also affect some reopening plans. the goal is to get counties to focus on zip codes disproportionately affected by the virus including black, latino and pacific islander communities and provide contact tracing and community outreach to get test positivity rates

down in those areas. some counties like sonoma are falling behind in this equity metric not doing enough to help those communities and that could prevent the county from moving to less restrictive tiers, which could prevent reopening the county and getting people back to work. >> we want all our businesses and communities to come together and realize it's important to address the disparities and interrupt disease transmission. >> santa clara county is in the bay area and they are meeting the new equity metric investing time and money into outreach. in east san jose, a santa clara outreach team spent tuesday going door to door educating the public to educate how they could stop the spread of the coronavirus. counties cannot slide backwards into a more restrictive tier because of that equity metric but they could be held in one place for quite some time meaningless businesses would be

agencies says bad planning and the extremely hot weather triggered these. there was no single cause blamed for leaving humds hundreds of thousands of people without power. poor planning has made california's power grid vulnerable. the glass fire in napa and sonoma counties is over 50% contained. cal fire reports more than 67,000 acres have been destroyed. more than 600 homes are gone. 20,000 structures are still threatened. a santa rosa rancher is being called a hero after he saved at least 40 homes from burning in the glass fire. >> i'm not a hero. i'm just a guy -- just a bulldozer operator doing my job. >> vinny martin created a line of defense with his bulldozer between the flames and his neighborhood. he and his friends carved out a 12-foot fire break around his

grab a jacket this evening, back into the 50s and 60s. poor air quality possible in the north bay the next two days. that's why the spare the air was extended. there will be elevated smoke over top of us. hazy sunshine through at least thursday, then you can see friday everything is gone. the all right. we'll turn it over to reggie. i was devastated when i heard this news yesterday. >> yeah. i think a lot of people were. memorials for rock star eddie van halen popping up in southern california. mourners have placed flowers at the rock walk outside the hollywood guitar center where van halen's guitar and handprints were on display. van halen died of cancer yesterday. many considered him one of the greatest and most influential rock guitarists of all time. he was 65. san jose has a big problem with wild pigs. the city council approved a solution. it involves a bow and arrow.

city leaders voted unanimously to allow trappers to hunt the pigs on private property after years of damaged lawns and golf courses. coyote creek golf club and silver creek valley golf club sent letters estimating they spent tens of thousands of dollars to repair the damage and trap some of the pigs. >> there are certain pigs that are trap-wise or trap smart and are outsmarting the traps and it's been hard to catch them. they are still causing damage to private property. >> of course there are people not happy about this change. some residents argue that shooting the pigs with an arrow amounts to torture. peta will be holding a protest outside of two stores near san francisco's union square today. activists plan on blocking the entrance to the urban outfitter store on powell street starting at noon and then they'll make their way down to the

anthropology store on market street. peta says they are protesting all of urban outfitters brands because of animal cruelty towards alpacas. they want the brand to stop selling clotheses made from a alpaca fleet. one of the worn-out fire hoses was donated to the alameda county zoo. they made them into swings. one of the cats enjoying this hammock made from a recycled fire hose. from the pandemic to the black lives matter movement, 2020 is a year we will never forgot. artists are telling the story of this moment in history in an exhibit at the deyoung museum. for the fourth time ever, they are having what they're calling an open featuring blind submissions by mostly unknown

artists. andrea mccoy harvey teaches art at an elementary school and her piece called the afro goddess was inspired by the strong black women in her life. >> if you go to a museum and you're seeing representation of yourself, that will strive -- that will allow you to be who you want to be in that situation. >> museum officials say they thought they would get a few hundred submissions, but get this, they got more than 11,000. the exhibit featuring 760 regional artists runs through january. now i'm even more excited because i'm going tomorrow. i'll bring you -- >> that's tomorrow? >> mm-hmm. >> i'll see that and freida. >> that will be a day. >> it will be a whole day. >> i love that people who are not professional artists are getting a chance to show off what's going on in their lives. >> yeah.

morgan hill the warm spot. 66 around millbrae and san mateo, 67. your neighbors there will be cooler than the rest of the peninsula which will be in the low to mid 70s. check out the upper 50s to near 60 along the coast. low to mid 60s for downtown, south san francisco and sausalito. near 60 along the north bay coast, 15 to 20 degrees cooler with mid to upper 70s in the valleys. along the east bayshore, 66 in oakland. as you head into the east bay, 77 in san ramon. the cool spot, brentwood. the gray and the green you see is drizzle along the coast and the east bay hills. 40s in the north bay valleys, 50s for the rest of us. high pressure dominating two-thirds of the country and weakening those storms as they head near us. the chances of rain are looking less but still chances for friday and saturday. kumasi? >> all right. thank you.

google and oracle are taking their copyright dispute to the supreme court. today the justices are expected to hear their case. the lawsuit involves the creation of the android operating system. google used part of oracle's java platform to build android, so oracle sued for copyright. google says they could use it because of fair use. the supreme court ruling will impact the future of software development. facebook is cracking down on all forms of content that is related to qanon. the social media giant says they're removing the pages and groups related to the conspiracy theory whether they promote violence or not from facebook

and instagram. it marks the company's most dramatic escalation in the fight against misinformation. facebook's critics say the new effort may be too little too late to make a difference. apple's next iphone could be revealed as soon as tuesday. october 13th is the date that the cupertino event. this comes weeks after apple announced the release of a new apple watch and ipad. do you recognize this cat? it was rescued from the glass fire. a cal fire damage inspector found the kitten taking shelter under a truck. from these photos it sure looks like they bonded, but they just want to know does this belong to someone? are they looking for it? the cat is at a shelter. it will be put up for adoption if no family claims it. though they do seem to make a good pair. i don't know if she already has a cat, but the cat looks
