harris and vice president mike pence go head to head in their first and only vice presidential debate. good evening. we have live team coverage tonight with reaction from all around the bay area. >> yes, first let's hear from abc 7 anchor liz kroits at what was said and left unsaid. >> hi, oma. this was a 90 minute debate that truly felt like a debate unlike last week's chaotic presidential debate. we could hear from both candidates on a wide range of issues, including once again the issue of climate change and the california wild fires. >> with plexiglass separating each candidate seated 12 feet apart, it was no surprise the first questions at the vice presidential debate focused on coronavirus. amid an outbreak at the white house senator kamala harris and vice president mike pence sparred over the handling of the coronavirus. >> president donald trump did what no other president has done

the department. j.r. stone is live in the newsroom with more. >> it's been a sad day for hundreds of firefighters in san francisco, a sad day for a wife who lost her husband, a sad day for two kids who lost their father. >> hundreds of san francisco firefighters lined up outside san francisco general hospital as the body of 42-year-old firefighter jason cortez was carried out in a casket draped by the american flag. >> today is a tragic day for the san francisco fire department. we've lost one of our family members in an accident. >> crews tell us that accident happened around 10:00 a.m. tuesday at this san francisco training facility in the mission. cal osha confirmed cortez fell three stories, causing severe head injuries resulting in his death. >> i'm unable to say anything else about the accident other than it was tragic, absolutely tragic, and we are all heart broken.

>> cortez leaves behind a family. >> he's a father of two children, a husband to an amazing wife. >> reporter: after the accident, cortez's wife could be seen walking out of the hospital side by side with their two children. for the past two years, cortez worked at station three in san francisco's tender loin. janine nickelson says it's the busiest station in the united states. chief nickelson says cortez was a 13-year veteran who she personally knew, a man whose father was a firefighter and who had followed in his footsteps. >> he was just a really wonderful human being, always a straight up guy, hardworking, kind, just, you know, if i could clone him, you know, i would. just a wonderful human being. >> now, i did talk with a number of people who live across the street from the training facility.

exclusive video, private firefighters are under investigation for possibly setting illegal backfires. dan noyes has been investigating in napa county and hiking with crews extinguishes hotspots in the glass fire. >> reporter: these illegal backfires can be very dangerous if private contractors don't inform the incident command post what they're doing, other firefighters could be at risk. the iteam obtained this exclusive video from 4:00 friday, private firefighters hired by napa valley wineries detained by the chp and cal fire and suspected of setting illegal backfires. >> it's illegal for someone to set a backfire if they aren't

part of the incident command structure, correct? >> that is my understanding. it is illegal. >> cal fire confirms an investigation is underway that could result in charges and arrests. >> safety is a priority not only for the public but also our first sonders that are working these areas. >> reporter: backfires are a essential tool in combatting wild fires. this is the scene from swieger vineyards and winery last week. crews used drip torches to set o small blazes. the owner of swieger vineyard showed me how that fire set saved his winery. >> we set the fire so it was burning downhill as the fire was coming uphill. that's so important to get the greatest distance. >> the glass fire did destroy what used to be his parent's house. and this year's harvest is probably ruined by the smoke.

but he's thankful it didn't claim more of his life's work. >> we were up for 48 hours and all you could think about was let's fight it. >> it's a serious thing. i get it. >> to find out more about those private firefighters, i followed two crews from oregon putting out hotspots yesterday. they're working through a government contract. they also worry about freelance firefighters sometimes hired by the wun ris. >> guys that throw a pick up truck together and a tank in the back, they don't have any training, they don't have insurance, they don't have workman's comp. they aren't even an official business but they look like a firefighter. >> jamie pickering told me if private contractors set fires without telling anyone, without calling in plans to incident command posts, that could endanger any firefighters who may be working nearby. >> when you get somebody who's running lone wolf, people get

you are the had. firefighters get killed. i've been to enough firefighter funerals in my lifetime. i don't want to go to more. >> reporter: cal fire tells me the investigation should wrap up in the next day or two. for the i-team, dan noyes, abc 7 news. tomorrow north bay leaders meet with fema to talk about federal assistance for recovery from the glass fire. the state has recovered a disaster declaration. if it's approved grants will be able to homeowners and business owners who had to rebuild. >> everyone save every receipt because you may qualify for the individual and buzz assistance if, in fact, that declaration does occur, especially in the near future. >> save every receipt was the advice. the glass fire has burned more than 67,000 acres in sonoma and napa counties. it is 62% contained tonight. 1,536 structures have been

destroyed but that's not a final figure. that's one of the things holding up the declaration. the good news we can report is apparently the weather continues to change in our favor, ama. >> it certainly does. the air quality is still fiat as good as we would love it to be sandhya. >> yeah, but that is going to be changing, the air quality will get better and dan and ama, the other thing is this weather pattern that we're in which is cooler, higher humidity, is very favorable for the firefighters. and that's why the containment has gone up to just over 60%. let's take a look at that air quality right now. napa to fairfield, santa rosa, oakland to livermore. you will notice smoke from the central valley drifted into our area. san jose. moderate from san francisco to fremont and around the santa cruz area. let's check out the smoke forecast and i think you will be happy to hear that things will be changing. so, yes, tomorrow morning it's

still smoky at 5:00 a.m. but notice the push of that smoke out of the region as we head towards friday and even into saturday and sunday. the blue is indicates less smoke across our region. spare the air alert in effect through tomorrow. until that happens we will not see improvement in air quality completely. so, tomorrow it is poor to moderate, friday, saturday, sunday we start to see good air quality. looks busy in the pacific. if we can get the systems in here, that would be great. for now this is tropical moisture that moves in. leftover of former hurricane marie. this system here, it would be great if it would come in here and break rain but looks like it's going to split in two and bypass us. let's check out what storm is going to make it. this is something you don't want to see, amongst administer storm in the gulf of mexico. this is delta, wind of 100-miles-per-hour expected to strengthen to category 3 as it makes landfall across the gulf
