fortson. napa there is in the orange. that is poor air quality. the rest of us are showing yellow, moderate. even san francisco, you're the cleanest with green. good air. enjoy the clean air while most of us have it. it could deteriorate in the afternoon hours. we saw that in the north bay and down in san jose. look at the cloud cover. a canopy of high clouds and low clouds over us. limited sunshine today. look at these temperatures tank even more. you step outside. it's milder than yesterday with some patchy drizzle in the 50s. 50s and 60s at noon. 60s and barely 70 at 4:00. grab a coat this evening, back in the 50s and 60s. kumasi? >> thank you. debate plans are up in the air right now because president trump is not happy with the next debate going virtual. in a live interview with fox news this morning he said "i'm not going to waste my time doing a virtual debate." the commission on presidential debates announced today it will not hold an in-person debate

next week. instead they want the president and joe biden to participate in a town hall style event from separate remote locations. that next debate is set for october 15th. vice president mike pence and senator kamala harris faced off in a historic vice presidential debate last night. abc7 news reporter julian glover is live with the key takeaways. >> good morning. we saw more substance last night in the debate between senator harris and vice president pence than we did in the biden/trump debate a week earlier. both candidates directly ignoring questions from the moderator, susan paige. the debate opened up with the trump administration's response to the coronavirus and covered topics from the future of the supreme court, the economy and health care as well. both candidates evaded questions. most notably on whether harris and biden would increase seats on the supreme court and pence

on the state abortion laws. most illuminating exchanges was the back and forth on climate change and california wildfires. >> the climate is changing. the issue is what's the cause and what do we do about it? there are no more hurricanes today than there were 100 years ago. >> thank you. >> but many of the climate alarmists use hurricane and wildfires to sell a bill of goods of a green new deal. >> we have seen a pattern with this administration they don't believe science. joe's plan says we will deal with it and also create jobs. donald trump when asked about the wildfires in california and the question was the science is telling us this. you know what donald trump said? science doesn't know. >> you even heard the moderator there struggling to rein in vice president mike pence at one point. something else has may have caught your ear if you were watching live. senator harris gave a shout-out to oakland. she mentioned she was born in

positive for covid-19, that's up from 24 yesterday afternoon. the white house is now facing unprecedented criticism from the prestigious "new england journal of medicine" over the administration's handling of the pandemic. in a scathing editorial they wrote that u.s. leaders should be voted out and have taken a crisis and turned it into a tragedy. it comes as 32 states and territories are now seeing a rise in cases. >> we could have from 300,000 to 400,000 deaths. that would be just so tragic if that happens. >> another top military official tested positive after attending a meeting with the joint chiefs. general gary thomas is second in command of the marine corps. all but one of the joint chiefs are now in isolation. reggie? >> jobina, thank you. we are closely following what's happening in california and our road to reopening. this interactive map includes details on where each county

stands. to find out how your county is doing, head to abc7news.com. the employment development department has started taking new applications but many people say they're still running into issues with the new system. edd officials say a new i.d. verification system is in place. 64% of new claims are now automatically verified. people say they're experiencing long wait times or are unable to finish the application. lawmakers say the edd has barely put a dent in the backlog of 1.6 million claims that go back as far as june and that it won't get cleared up until next year. north bay leaders will meet with fema today to talk about federal assistance for recovery from the glass fire. the state has requested a disaster declaration. if that is approved grants will be available to home owners and business owners who have to rebuild. >> everyone save every receipt. because you may qualify for the individual and business

today there's going to be a court hearing to discuss a grand juror's motion to speak freely about the breonna taylor case. jobina is following that from the live desk. >> yes. kentucky attorney general daniel cameron says his office is moving to dismiss an anonymous grand juror's motion to talk freely about the proceedings in the breonna taylor case. the grand juror accused cameron of using them as a as a as a asa cameron says he doesn't object to anyone stating their opinion about his handling of the taylor investigation but he said there is a difference between that and revealing secret grand jury proceedings.

reggie? >> thank you. governor newsom is taking new action on climate change. he just signed an executive order that would conserve 30% of the state's lands and coastal waters. he was asked whether the order will try to limit commercial uses like logging and mining. >> it's about conservation, not a scarcity mindset or taking something away. it's about an inclusive abundant mindset. it's about incorporating those that want to recreate and those who want to do the good work that we need to do in terms of actively managing our forests. >> the governor said california will be the first state in the nation to do this type of land and coastal conservation. new at 6:00, it is a record year for puppy adoptions and purchases during the coronavirus pandemic as families look for joy and companionship that the pets bring. the chronicle is reporting that

below average from upper 60s to low 70s through most of the south bay. 73 in los gatos. 73 in morgan hill. 64 to 68 on the peninsula today. upper 50s with limited sunshine along the coast. 62 to 64 from downtown south san francisco to sausalito. and about 68 to 73 through the north bay valleys. mid to upper 70s from cloverdale northward. not quite as influenced by the marine layer. as far as the east bayshores, 64 to 68 is the spread here. look at the refreshing air over the east bay valleys. 70 to 76 degrees. tonight you can see temperatures with the clouds over us, mainly in the 50s. a bit of drizzle possible. my accuweather seven-day forecast, still going to be cooler than average with random showers friday and saturday. winds blow offshore. sunday, smoke could be on the increase. look at the 80s and 90s away from the coast tuesday and wednesday. critical fire conditions, we'll keep an eye on it.

now at 6:30. flags at half staff in san francisco as the city mourns the death of a firefighter. this morning investigators looking into that tragic accident. president trump is now saying he will not participate in the next presidential debate which is set for october 15th. he made that announcement this morning on fox news after the commission on presidential debates announced that this debate will be virtual. those plans are now in question. and once again you gave a non-answer. joe biden gave a non-answer. >> mr. vice president, i'm speaking. the one and only vice presidential debate is in the books. i'm andrew dymburt with a recap. and the company hiring in the bay area ahead of the holiday shopping season. there are thousands of positions open right now.

san mateo, upper 60s to low 70s just about everywhere else. the east bay mid 70s there. reggie? >> thank you. a somber morning for san francisco firefighters who suffered a sudden and terrible loss yesterday. a training accident killed 13-year veteran jason cortez. amy hollyfield is live in the mission district with what we know so far about how this all happened. >> i want to show you the tribute that's starting to gather outside station number 7. people left flowers and cards thanking him for his service. he was training here at this station when he died. 42-year-old kevin cortez worked for the fire department for 13 years. he was involved in a training exercise when he died. firefighters tell us he fell

during the training exercise and fell three stories. >> i'm unable to say anything about the accident other than it was tragic. we are all heart broken. >> hundreds of firefighters lined up outside of san francisco's general hospital as the flag-draped casket of the husband and father of two was carried out. he was following in his father's footsteps becoming a firefighter. his father also served as a firefighter. cortez worked at station number 3 in the tenderloin. the chief says it is the busiest station in the country. if you look at this live picture of the flag at half staff at fire station number 7 showing the fire department in mourning. the fire chief says if she could clone him she would. describing him as a wonderful human being. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. other san francisco fire stations are paying tribute.

this sign is outside cortez's station, number 3. men and women of station 44 made that. abc7 was there as they passed the sign around and signed the back whiti procession route. they say cortez was well loved. the white house covid-19 outbreak is expanding. an internal government memo obtained by abc news indicates 34 people are now testing positive up from 24 yesterday afternoon. the white house says president trump was back in the oval office yesterday six days after announcing he tested positive. officials said the white house was taking precautions to stop the spread, but several white house aides were seen yesterday interacting once again without masks. regeneron asked the fda for emergency authorization for its covid-19 antibody therapy. it's the same one given to president trump last week. this morning there's question about the president's ties to that company. jobina fortson is at the live

desk. >> yes. the biotech company's experimental antibody treatment is still in large-scale clinical trials. it's been available for compassionate use, which is something the fda has to approve like it did for the president. it's been designed for covid-19, but it's unclear if that helped president trump. it has doses for about 50,000 patients. early data from the company's trial showed it worked fairly safely with few side effects. your voice your vote. with 26 days to go until election day, we may not get another presidential debate. the president is now refusing to participate in next week's debate with joe biden after the organizers announced it would go virtual overnight because of coronavirus concerns. the announcement coming hours after vice president mike pence and candidate senator kamala harris finished their first and only debate.

2 level. we're talking about hurricane delta. it's got 100-mile-per-hour winds. you can see how big it's become. as we head into the forecast, you can see more than 8 inches of rain possible on top of a 10 to 11-foot coastal surge. some major damage there. extreme risk to property damage and lives from this storm that could gust up to 100 miles per hour. look at these areas. mississippi, louisiana all under flood advisories over the next 96 hours. the path has shifted to the west, almost like laura, right over lake charles. the path has narrowed as we expect the cone of probability to get smaller as we get closer to the event. it has sha rufrrunk about 50 mi. great news for the firefighters. yesterday we had 72 degrees and 7% relative humidity.

avenue off-ramp. this overturned box truck was blocking three lanes. they pulled it up. even though there was an ambulance called out to the scene, a huge backup, the chp was worried about the situation. check it out it drives away almost like nothing happened. happy to see that. we'll move over to the graphics. southbound 680 past lake herman road on-ramp we have an overturned big rig here. speeds down to 7 miles per hour in the area. you should expect delays. hopefully it will be out of the way soon. lastly before we head to break, checking out the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights came on at 6:15. we definitely have a backup there. it's busy on the bridge as well. make sure to head out the door on time today if

welcome back. now to your morning money report. about an hour ago the u.s. labor department released the latest weekly jobless claims report. 840,000 people filed for

unemployment benefits last week. that is slightly higher than what economists projected. they projected around 825,000. it's the sixth week in a row that new jobless claims are under 1 million. there are more than 10.97 million continuing claims. that's down about 1 million from last week's report. new let's look live at the new york stock exchange as trading gets under way. we're up about 92 points. all right. thank you. now, at abc we're committed to building a better bay area that includes the impact the pandemic is having on our economy. here's our weekly segment, job hunting with jobina. she's searching for open roles for you and she has a company looking to hire thousands of people right here in the bay area as we speak. jobina? >> yes, reggie. i know we have not gotten to halloween yet everybody, i understand. but u.p.s. is already focused on the holiday season.

$28 an hour. driver helpers starting at $23 an hour and package handlers starting at $16 an hour. there are other roles, too. about 35% of people hired by u.p.s. for seasonal jobs were later hired for permanent positions. nearly a third of the company's u.s. work force started with seasonal work. >> personally i'm one of those examples. i started as a peak season hire, and i was able to stay on after the holiday, and i really found that the culture was outstanding. i found there's a multitude of careers that you can have and i stayed on here. i'm here at u.p.s. nearly 33 years later. >> reporter: moore went from package handler to hr director. maybe you could, too. all right. let's check out job openings. for a delivery driver helper the qualifications include assisting the driver in delivery of packages. you will not drive the vehicle. it involves the ability to lift
