but not forever. i talked with mark on the phone just hours after he was released from the hospital. he tells me that this was either a black tip shark or baby bull shark. tonight he's in his hotel room resting after a scary 24 hours. >> i had no idea. i didn't feel anything. >> reporter: 31-year-old mark boden of santa rosa is referring to the moment he was bit by a shark when he went swimming in miami beach, florida. moments after that bite were recorded on cell phone video. >> it felt like something punched my leg, felt like a big chunk was taken. it didn't hurt at all. >> reporter: after the bout, his girlfriend held his leg up after paramedics worked to stop the bleeding. in a phone conversation thursday, he tells us he was body surfing and decided to do so on the famous south beach while on vacation with his girlfriend. he says there were so many fish in the w

one with nature before the attack. >> you know, [ inaudible ]. >> reporter: while he did have to have surgery and stay overnight at the hospital, he is now out and expected to make a full recovery. in fact, he hasn't ruled out eventually going back into the water. >> i think at some point i'll be going back in. plus i'm thinking, you know, what is the chance of getting -- having two shark attacks? that's got to be zero. >> reporter: glad he is okay tonight. he owns a tea company in santa rosa called tea and trumpettes. he says he might add a shark tea to the menu, obviously now smiling after this ordeal. as for coming back home, that should happen in the next couple of days with that stitched-up leg of his. j.r. stone, abc7 news. >> boy, that's quite a gash he received. i'm glad he's okay. >> absolutely. scary, but yeah, glad he's okay. >> thanks, j.r.

well, developing news, despite his recent covid diagnosis, president trump says he hopes to hold a rally in florida saturday night. as abc7 news reporter other elizabeth reports, it comes as the president is adamant he will not participate in a virtual debate next week. >> reporter: after months of mask wearing, business closures and working from home, the pandemic numbers in the u.s. moving in the wrong direction. 28 states seeing a rise in coronavirus cases and 35 states reporting an increase in hospitalizations. on the campaign trail in arizona, joe biden blaming president trump for the grim data. >> look, we've paid too high a price already for donald trump's chaotic divisive leadership. more than 210,000 americans have lost their lives. >> reporter: in a short memo thursday night, the white house physician dr. sean conley saying he fully anticipates president trump to return to public engagements by this saturday. dr. conley has repeatedly evaded specific questions about the president's condition before and

but then the big problem is what do you do about the comorbidities? that relates to the social determinants of health that minorities have had to deal with since the day they were born. >> reporter: what can colleges do to keep students safe? >> test all the students before they come onto the campus, then do surveillance testing every few days. when a student gets infected, have the capability of isolating them. >> reporter: when and how will there be a return to normal? >> will people have to wear masks? yes, likely. i would imagine if we get a good vaccine now, that we could have some degree of normality in the third quarter to the fourth quarter of 2021. >> reporter: kate larsson, abc7 news. >> new developments in a vacaville barber shop's fight to stay open during the pandemic. juan demaris is at risk of

empowerment says it took a barrio. co-founder cesar cruz noticed the truck went missing wednesday night. >> robberies happen all the time. this small food truck feeds over 2,000 people every week. >> reporter: covered in distinct murals, the truck allows the group to deliver crates of food to a feeding store. they need extra help during the pandemic. on thursday morning a resident familiar with cruz's efforts spotted the truck near the 81st avenue library. they asked to remain anonymous. >> i saw the truck. i don't recognize it. that's a cool mural. wait a second. >> reporter: the neighbor arrived to find the truck stripped of its catalytic converter. aaa couldn't help because the truck was too large bough he was able to lean on snf towing. cruz did so much for her family in the past. >> anything he asks me is free, free charge. >> reporter: in total, crooks caused $1200 in damage. money cruz says has already been raised by the community. from bad luck to blessings in

to prevent more violence. >> there is nothing that should be protected any stronger than the right of a person to walk safely down the street in their community. >> meanwhile, a man accused of two assaults remains in jails ri pending trial. he attacked a 78-year-old woman last month. >> in the south bay, a mayor is threatening to sue over governor newsome's project home key, housing in the pandemic. they will use the fund for extended stay america fund in milpitas. the mayor of milpitas told the mercury news city officials and residents didn't get any input. project home key is exempt from rules to get them done quicker. county officials told the newspaper city staff was involved. milpitas city council will discuss next steps later this month. >> the 43rd annual mill valley film festival is underway and it

right, sandhya? >> that's right. you don't need to worry about it whether it's raining or dry outside. i do want to give you an update since we're talking about rain. lanina, this is the latest from the climate prediction center. lanina has developed the waters near the equatorial pacific to cool. 85% chance that it will continue through this winter. forecasters are expecting it to be a stronger event than the last one that happened, and it is too early to predict as far as precipitation goes, exactly how much precip we may get. certainly are expecting a little bit of change in our forecast. i'll tell you about that in a moment. temperatures right now 50s, 60s. here's live doppler 7. you will notice partly skies across the bay area. -- improve from san francisco, redwood city to the fremont mountains. we're seeing air quality moderate across the rest of the bay area. here's a look at the smoke forecast. tomorrow morning you're going to be seeing some haze, but
